Rowton Hall Hotel and Spa: Opinions
Positive experience: What has happened to Rowton Hall, my friend and I have frequent spa days here. So disappointed with spa area, lockers dilapidated ie don't lock, doors falling off hinges, pool area needs a good clean, sunbeds need replacing, such a lovely place but in desperate need of a makeover. Spa treatments were lovely
Fantastic experience: Great Experience. Facilities were great. Staff were excellent and friendly
Positive experience: Enjoyed it but felt the spa and changing rooms was a bit tired. Only one toilet working, pool was quite cold, insufficient sun beds for the amount of customers
Negative experience: Had x2 superior rooms and both were very tired and not in good condition. Carpets and walls were heavily marked and corridors were the same. Breakfast needs to be pre-booked in time slots and complimentary hot options are limited, can’t get a full English included. Overall this is a 3 star hotel and the spa allows them to claim 4 but this was also tired and all the cushions were marked.
Fantastic experience: My daughter and I spent a fabulous afternoon at Rowton Hall at Novel Retreat. The grounds and hotel are lovely . Afternoon tea was excellent.
Positive experience: Overall its good, it's seems though the hotel is in need of a controlled maintenance program throughout.
Negative experience: Disgusting, would prefer to stay in a budget hotel at least it would be clean there is no way this hotel is 4*. I wrote an email complaining and nobody even took the time to respond. Food was horrible, we actually laughed when it came out because it looked like a joke. Staff where rude in the bar when you could find them and the room was the worst part, so dirty and run down. There was dead spiders and cobwebs in our room and all over the hotel, we had to move three times in the restaurant because they where above our head dangling. Wouldn’t stay here again if I was paid to.
Fantastic experience: The best spa experience I've had! I booked the pregnancy spa package and it's been outstanding from start to finish. The staff have all been welcoming and lovely, the elemis massage was absolutely beautiful and I was made to feel so relaxed. To top it off, the two course lunch was some of the nicest food I've ever had. Spa facilities were perfect, nice and warm, clean, had everything you need. Would highly recommend ❤️
Fantastic experience: Beautiful setting for my daughter's Autumn wedding (October 2024). The Apartment was an excellent location for the Bride & Bridesmaids to get ready on the morning of the wedding, with plenty of space and natural light. All other rooms are spacious and comfortable. The grounds were a fantastic setting for photos, with guests enjoying drinks on the patio area in the sunshine. The function room was beautifully decorated and set up for both the wedding breakfast and the evening party, and the conservatory area was great as a quieter area for older guests to relax and chat in comfy chairs. The bar in the function room is well positioned and kept guests involved in the party, instead of drifting off to the main hotel bar as can happen in many venues. The quality of food for both the wedding breakfast and the evening was excellent, our guests were very complimentary about the food! It's been a pleasure to deal with James and the team and I can thoroughly recommend Rowton Hall as a wedding venue that hits the mark. Special mention to Amy our Wedding Coordinator who was fantastic and made the day go without a hitch!
Negative experience: When we arrived we was shown to our room by reception, we entered the room and wow where do we start. There was stains all over the floor, mould all around the patio door, stains on the chairs, stains all over the walls! We then went down to the spa because we just drove over 2 hours to get here and when we was on the spa/pool things didn't get much better, the jacuzzi was cold that you couldn't sit in it, the steam room floor was black with dirt and dirty water, there was like slime all over the seating area and around the pool there was clumps of hair. We then decided to leave the pool area after 5mins of been there and when my partner was taking a shower she told me that the shower stunk of dirty drains and there was mold dripping of the walls. We then went back to reception after getting changed and complained about the pool area and the room and explained that my partner has bad asthma, they then told us that they will upgrade us and then they showed us a suite room. When looking around the room with the receptionist the lights in the room was flickering and even she said that's not a good start so she showed us another room next door with a nice four poster bed in. We all agreed this room was alot better then the previous one. When the receptionist left us we looked around the room further and noticed the glass draws was cracked on top leaving a sharp surface and the bed sheet was ripped. At this point we was to hungry and running out of time to complain again so we just left it. The next morning we went down for breakfast what was included in the room, when we sat down and looked what to have we noticed if you want a fully cooked breakfast you got to pay a extra £5 each! Only option you got was a light menu and a not so good continental. I had the drippy eggs and my partner had the sausage cob, we then ordered a pot of tea. When the pot of tea arrived I let it sit for couple of minutes to mash, when I tried the tea I then had to spit it back into my cup! It tasted like it was boiled with very old water and all you could taste was hot stale water! The breakfast then came and my partner sausages was very bad quality, you get better at wetherspoons! And only one of my eggs was dippy and the other was fully boiled, I then told the waitress and she went and fetched me another egg, when that arrived I broke into it and noticed the egg was still half raw! The white of the egg was still runny so it was like slim! At this point we had enough so we just got up and left and went to reception to complain. The receptionist was not helpful at all she acted like she did not care. We have stayed in hotels all around the country and I can honestly say this is one of the worst places, we have stayed in better 3 stars what have a lot nicer breakfast!
Fantastic experience: Lovely stay for my sisters 50 th. Upgraded to the lodge. Beautiful. Nothing was too much trouble. Spa and pool and gym just right. Delicious breakfast. Evening meal tasty too
Fantastic experience: Lovely relaxed quiet venue, friendly staff, and nice rooms
Negative experience: The spa is past its best. Locker door missing and broken and a green film on the pool tiles above the water. Only positive comment was friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Visited the spa for afternoon tea and spa day with treatment at the end of September. Absolutely delightful. The afternoon flew by. Pool, steam and sauna were perfect temperatures. Afternoon tea with prosecco was delicious and the massage was so relaxing. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Visited Rowton Hall hotel and Spa for a celebration afternoon tea. We received a warm greeting from the reception staff member. We were taken through to a lovely decorated room. Our host explained the afternoon tea and was aware of our dietary requirements. (Informed them at time of booking). We were given the option to have our prosecco with the meal or afterwards in the hotel lounge, we choose the latter. The food was of a great quality. Having finished our meal we were shown through to the lounge, again the lounge was beautifully decorated and despite a minor spillage by the barman, we received our drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Overall a great experience in beautiful surroundings and very pleasant staff.
Positive experience: Good size carpark Warm friendly check in, all information given. Stairs to the room took a while to find because I didn't see the sign! Once in a little compact to move about in, shower room was ok. Bed was super comfortable WiFi ok The shower was good Breakfast is not included but can be added if wanted. Evening meal was good Reasonable price and good choices on the menu. Hotel has some lovely gardens set around it . The location is on the outskirts of the city but there are some lovely walks close by. Would stay again if in the area.
Fantastic experience: Set in 8 acres, Rowton hotel and spa is beautiful inside and out. Inside there's a lovely reception. The staff can't do enough to help with our stay. We stayed in a premier bedroom with a spa package. Unlike other spas, the itinerary throughout the stay was relaxing and comfortable. The room was spacious and the bed was one of the best night sleep we've had. You can specify early check in and champagne/prosecco in your room, well worth it in my opinion. The spa is lovely with comfortable loungers and chairs around the pool. Sauna and steam room too with one hot and one cold shower. The pool looks out on a beautiful walled garden. For dinner, we had dietary requirements and there was plenty of choice. The food came hot, presented well and delicious. Staff in the thyme restaurant were lovely and were happy to help with our request. The bar has games you can use, we had a lot of fun with the games after dinner. Next morning breakfast in the thyme restaurant plenty of choice from the continental buffet with gluten free options. There's a menu with a selection included in the package or if you're feeling hungry there's an extra menu with a supplement cost. Food was cooked to perfection. The spa package we had was a 55 minute treatment each. The double room was available and the staff in the spa did an amazing job in unwinding and relaxing us both. We finished up with the lazy lunch package on the patio. After a cold drink we walked around the stunning grounds. Well worth exploring as there's a pond, lovely paths and it was a perfect end to our stay... ... however it won't be our last... Already looking forward to the next one. Thank you for making our stay perfect.
Positive experience: Brilliant break..only complaint was slow service in restaurant ...didnt seam to be enough staff..
Positive experience: We enjoyed our stay with you staff excellent and the food was also great but our room 206 in need of sprucing up it's very tired carpet threadbare and stains in the velvet chairs what a shame the room letting you down .
Fantastic experience: Visited for a wake, lovely room, food and staff.
Positive experience: Only went for a wedding reception and it's a real nice place
Fantastic experience: Fantastic venue to bring today's couple to in one of our Imperial Viscount Landaulette wedding cars.
Fantastic experience: My Husband and I would like to take the opportunity to thank All of the Staff at Rowton Hall. They ALL go the extra mile to make sure you have a lovely stay.Nothing is too much trouble. We have been here many times and will continue.Lovely team of dedication .The younger staff are being looked after. They have careers though do glass washing kitchen etc. You can see they are nurtured. Please take the to talk to these younger staff they are shy and reserved Management are exceptional. They leave no stone unturned.Edel amazing always goes extra mile to make sure we are happy.Reception staff lovely. No pressure.Spa staff relaxed.Maintanence staff lovely.Love the Spa colours.louis breakfast AMAZING.SHE IS BEAUTIFUL.Managers very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Really good place. Food was awesome. Had a relaxing time at pool and sauna .The ambience is great the place where the hotel is located is serene and peaceful. Love the staff very hospitable.
Negative experience: Well not bad till I got food poisoning thank you. Up all night here for work so had to call in sick and spend all day in bed. Will not be coming back here avoid this place clearly they don’t follow the correct procedures as I have stayed in a number of hotels in area with no issues.
Positive experience: Really nice spa package reasonably priced
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel Prices are a bit on the pricey side, but you expect this for a hotel set out where it is. Food was very nice, friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience at Rowton Hall, facilities are fantastic, rooms are spacious and clean and the service from staff, especially Louise on breakfast who couldn't do enough for us during our stay
Fantastic experience: Honestly the staff here couldn't have done more. I'm sorry to forget names, there is a blonde lady who was working as part of the restaurant staff on the 27th June who went above and beyond to ensure my partner's 30th afternoon tea was special. She is a big reason we will be back, may even look at having our wedding here. Spa facilities and treatment were fantastic. Couldn't possibly say anymore to extend our gratitude for a lovely morning.
Negative experience: ** Disappointing Spa Day Experience with Poor Communication and Unexpected Charges** I visited Rowton Hall on the 9th of June with a friend for an afternoon treat experience, and I am writing to express my disappointment with the service we received. Upon our arrival, we were handed menus with little to no explanation about what was included in our lunch package. There was no information provided online or in my confirmation email either. This left us quite confused about what to expect. We even made a reservation for tea elsewhere, anticipating that the offerings might be limited. The menus indicated a £32 allowance for lunch, so we chose three courses accordingly. After enjoying the spa and treatments, we sat down for our lunch. However, when we went to reception afterwards, we were presented with a £41 bill. Shocked and confused, we inquired twice about the discrepancy and were told that only £12.50 each was credited for lunch. This information was not provided beforehand and contradicted what was printed on the menu. Feeling quite taken aback, we paid the bill and left, regretting not sticking to our original evening booking elsewhere. The food was mediocre and not worth the money we paid. To make matters worse, I sent a detailed complaint to Rowton Hall on the 10th of June, but they have failed to respond. This lack of acknowledgement has only added to our disappointment. Overall, this experience has left us deeply dissatisfied, and I feel compelled to share this so others are aware of the poor communication, unexpected charges, and lack of customer service. I hope Rowton Hall takes this feedback seriously to improve their customer experience.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place to stay and lovely food lovely staff
Positive experience: Friend booked an overnight stay as a birthday treat. Further spa morning retreat booked. ( 4 hour slot) thus included a 25 mon treatment and £12 towards a lunch. Spa are was lovely, more seating added from previous visit, which is a plus. Pool, steam and sauna room lovely. Changing rooms had good lockers but temperature was very cold in chamging room. Towels and robes provided and of good quality. Treatments were alittle disappointing, we both had the neck, shoulder and scalp treatment, very different experince had by each of us during the treatment, which lasted 18mins and not 25, would not lable as luxurious, and felt rushed. Afternoon tea was lovely, and came with a glass of fizz. Pauline was lovely, very friendly, warm and attentive, asset to the spa area. Hotel stay was lovely, our room was a superior room, large bed, separate sitting area with dressing table. Large bathroom met all our needs. Robes provided were of a good size, excellent shower. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided, decaff teabags provided upon request. Slept well, minimal noise. Bar area lacked atmosphere, maybe some music played could be consider, but staff were friendly. Breakfast, lots of choice, however poached egg not cooked well, offer made.to replace but declined, otherwise satisfied with what was available. Felt when signing out no apology from manager made when they mentioned the breakfast eggs. Would we stay again, yes probably, overall 90% great experience.
Fantastic experience: We recently celebrated our wedding at Rowton, and we are overjoyed with our experience. Our wedding manager was Lisa, and our operations manager was Amy. From the moment we first visited, we knew it was the perfect place to host our special day. The venue itself is stunning, with beautiful gardens and rooms that provided a picturesque backdrop for our intimate ceremony and reception. Our guests couldn't stop talking about the beauty and aesthetics of the location. The team at Rowton were exceptional. They were incredibly professional, accommodating, and attentive to every detail. From the initial planning, menu tasting, and the day of the event, they ensured everything ran smoothly and flawlessly. Their expertise and dedication made the entire process stress-free and enjoyable. They were always available and accommodating to our requests. We were particularly impressed with the level of service provided. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we and our guests felt welcomed and taken care of. We absolutely recommend Rowton Hall to anyone looking for a breathtaking and well-managed venue for their wedding or any special event. Thank you for making our wedding day everlasting and unforgettable! And special thank you to Lisa and Amy for your help arranging our day and ensuring it ran smoothly! Alla & Reuben
Fantastic experience: Went for a Spa day here, had 3 treatments & enjoyed the pool area. Beautiful place, lovely lovely staff (especially the guy on reception), very welcoming & friendly.
Positive experience: The spa itself was great, and the treatments were perfect. However, the booking process was incredibly complicated and unorganised - especially because I had a gift voucher. It was difficult to get through to the spa via telephone, and emails were left unanswered.
Positive experience: Stayed here overnight for a work trip. Arrived at lunchtime and decided to have lunch in the bar area. Had the butter chicken wrap, with crisps and salad. It was pathetic. Less than half a bag of plain crisps, the wraps were tiny with barely any chicken in. Dissapointing for £15. When I checked in, the receptionist asked if I intended to eat, I told her that I was underwhelmed by the lunch and her response ‘ok’. No reaction or apology. The room was nice, the bathroom was a bit miserable with those same plain white tiles on the floor, walls and ceiling. All looks a bit tired and the water pressure isn’t great. Had a massage in the spa though and that was lovely. Wasn’t bad value for £84 for a midweek stay but the food was overpriced and underwhelming.
Fantastic experience: Went for a mid week spa and B&B deal. Great room and facilities. Lovely breakfast with friendly staff. Only a few miles fro Chester centre.
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful makeover this hotel has had. The tasteful decor and plush velvet furnishings with quirky ornaments give the luxury feel. The staff were all very welcoming and attentive. We had a lovely afternoon tea. They were very accommodating and catered for my dairy allergy. We also had a couple of drinks (£7 for a Prosecco and £24 for a bottle of wine). We really enjoyed the outdoor area with new garden furnishings and the view across the gardens. The hotel was just a 15-20 minute walk from Christleton village and made a pleasant change from our usual local pub. Would highly recommend. Can’t wait to come back again soon and eat some other things off their menu.
Fantastic experience: We had a really relaxing and stress free stay and I cannot fault the hard working and very professional staff at Rowton Hall Hotel. The food was really nice and the waiting staff were always friendly and providing a service with a smile. The building is in impeccable condition and the rooms are super clean and well maintained. Thank you again to the Rowton Hall Hotel staff for making our stay a memorable one for all the right reasons.
Negative experience: This place looks lovely within the grounds. However, our room was quite dated and tired. We were allocated one room which had three beds in ? There were 4-5 cracked and very loose floor tiles so we asked to move room. The next room looked ok initially but the tv was tiny and old. Our view from the window was shocking ! Looked into a roof full of dangling wires ! We didn’t ask to move again as we had already moved. Everything in the room was dated. Although the size of the room was great. This room is 101, avoid ! I wish I could upload a photo. In the lounge area there were empty wine bottles, glasses and cups left on tables. The restaurant in the evening was pricey and definitely not worth paying the money for. The spa was nice and we used the facilities. My husband said there were towels all over the changing room, again not what you want to see. Apart from this, the staff were very polite and helpful. We definitely won’t stay here again which is a shame but rooms 101 and 103 should not be used as guest bedrooms in 2024!
Positive experience: I would rate the whole experience a 7/10. First, as a whole it was a pleasant experience. It was a nice night away. The pool wasn't a hydrotherapy pool like stated. Sauna and steam rooms were nice, but small. Towels, robes and flip flops were lovely and clean. The bar food was amazing, and service from the young lad behind the bar was great as well! Room was lovely, so clean and modern, bathroom was beautiful and clean. Breakfast was meh, I'm glad it was included and we didn't pay extra because it wasn't the best. The treatments at the spa was AMAZING. I absolutely couldn't fault the young lady doing my facial, she was so lovely and the facial was amazing with the head massage! I would pay just to get a facial of her again overall it was good, I probably wouldn't return though.
Positive experience: Had a spa day with afternoon tea and two treatments, Very good value and possibly the best scone I have had in a long time.
Negative experience: Nice staff. Nice place. Nice room but a little tired looking in the bathroom. Noisy place at night. No sleep whatsoever. The whole place moves when people are moving in the rooms around you. Bit slow at breakfast. We had a master suite, would have expected a mini bar or at least a fridge. Will not go again simply need my sleep.
Positive experience: Came here on a winter spa break. Definitely a mixed bag! The best thing by far were the treatments we received in the spa - both my friend and I had a back massage and facial and we both agreed these were excellent and extremely relaxing: 5/5 for those! The spa facilities felt a bit tired, and there's really just a pool, sauna & steam room. The changing rooms could definitely do with a glow up - damp and mouldy, with poor lighting, and we couldn't find a working locker. Nice products in the showers though. There is a small, well equipped gym which we enjoyed using too. The food in the restaurant was enjoyable. At breakfast, my friend was served an omelette with ham, but she's vegetarian, but obviously mistakes can happen, and I think her order was misheard. The staff put this right and apologised. The bedroom felt a bit tired, especially the bathroom which had lots of cracks in the walls, and no fan. The bed was comfy though, shower was good and we had a nice view out onto the garden. All in all, the staff were good, just feels like it needs a bit of money spending and care and attention to bring it back up to standard. Not sure I'd rebook the hotel, but would definitely return for a treatment with one of the lovely spa technicians.
Positive experience: On the whole good toilet didn't flush properly they did attend to it but still not right corridors and conservatory cold given broken glass for cocktail they did refund bedroom comfortable tv programs need retuning lot were scrambled and didn't tell u what was on TV noisy on floor above for both nights but that not fault of hotel would go back again staff friendly spa nice
Positive experience: This did not feel like a 4star luxury hotel. We arrived and our first room did not have a safe that worked. As we were next to a fire door on the ground floor we asked to be moved. The second room was cold with no hot water. Had to shower in the Spa. There was no fridge and the complimentary biscuits were open. The food was great and the bed comfortable. It just needs someone to check small details. A few more staff would also help. This could be perfect but lots of niggles at present.
Positive experience: Great room, great amenities. But 17 pound for avocado on toast with some mushroom is ridiculous.
Negative experience: At about 23.50 my partner and I were both lying on the bed naked when somebody walked in because they had double booked our room, I couldn't wait to get out of there the following morning, never again
Positive experience: The staff without exception were all really helpful and friendly. We had afternoon tea in the spa which was lovely & dinner & breakfast excellent too. The treatments I had were fabulous. However our room was freezing despite radiator being full on & the bathroom was in need of refurbishment not what to expect for £270 at all. Everywhere we saw was clean but all a bit tired. Lovely gardens & grounds.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful setting. It was my sister's choice for her birthday party. It is a dog friendly hotel, which is something I would not choose personally. And I was not surprised why as the awful smell of urine greeted me as I got out of the car by reception. It was strong! But, that was the only smell of animal I smelt during my visit. I did see a couple of dogs but they were not a problem. The hotel was well kept; nice and clean and well decorated. The staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. Check-in was simple and quick and the journey to the room was short. The room itself was not big but plenty big enough to get a wheelchair in and still have room to move around. It was well appointed, spotless and comfortable. The bathroom was lovely with a walk-in shower. The bed was very high and I struggled to get my wife, who can't walk, into it. But, once in, it was very comfortable and we both slept well. Breakfast was delicious with lots to choose from though I was surprised to find that some choices, such as a full English breakfast, carried a surcharge of £5! The bar prices were another surprise. I hate being ripped off in hotel bars but, the prices here were what I pay in a pub! It was so refreshing to find a fair price hotel. There are wonderful spa facilities but I did not use them on this occassion. All in all, it was a lovely visit. The hotel is superb with obviously a lot of care going in to its running. The staff were all friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. The setting for the hotel is lovely and the grounds were very pleasant. A highly recommended place to stay. And I never thought I'd say that about a pet friendly hotel.
Negative experience: Rooms very dated, for a twin room was just two beds pushed together. the balcony had chipped wood, rooms were freezing and the duvet was ripped. the service was good, definitely had better
Positive experience: Stayed here with 2 dogs for 2 nights. First night we had some issues with the room and room service (to be fair a business 'conference' started the same night so a rush of people and food for sure), but these were quickly resolved and our second night was great. Food was very good, parking easy, and the grounds were perfect for short essential dog walks.. Special thanks to Edel who looked after us and made us very welcome.
Fantastic experience: Went with a group of girlfriends and had a brilliant time. All the staff are lovely helpful and pleasant. Food was very enjoyable and we all felt very relaxed My deep tissue massage was carried out by such a pleasant therapist and relieved my stiff tight and painful back.
Negative experience: Had a lovely time celebrating a significant birthday with special friends. The deal we got was great. The staff were all lovely and friendly and the food was excellent. We will.be back.
Fantastic experience: Home from a lovely Sunday getaway with my husband and we dont usually write reviews but feel like this place deserves one . We enjoyed every minute of our stay and feel the staff in the hotel went above and beyond a young lad called Ben in the restaurant made our evening with his enthusiasm and professionalism at such a young age and the food was more than we imagined within the package it was delicious. We will definetly be returning soon.
Positive experience: No menu available for afternoon tea or drinks selection. At one point I thought the bar staff had gone home.
Fantastic experience: Lovely, well apportioned hotel that pays attention to the details. Nice staff and lots to enjoy around the spa pool and sauna.
Fantastic experience: My husband treated me to an overnight stay with evening meal and breakfast, for my birthday. Staff were very nice, friendly and polite. Food was great. Our room was nice and comfortable. The only complaint we had was that the bathroom was icy cold (time of year and weather), due to a draught coming from the window and it only had a heated towel radiator in there which did not give out much heat. Reported to reception staff and it was noted. Other than that, our stay was perfect and we would definitely stay here again.
Fantastic experience: Over the last Twelve months I have attend a number of events at Rowton Hall Hotel and I have been very lucky to see what go’s on behind the scenes at this hotel to make these events work so well as they do, to say that I’m impressed with the level of attention of detail that go’s on behind the senses is a vast understatement, all the staff that I have personal dealt with are professional, carrying, compassionate and have a real sense of “wanting to get right for the right reasons” for the customers of Rowton Hall, hand on heart I can recommend this hotel for any event from a Breakfast with Santa, to a formal dinner to a once in life time event such as wedding ! Safe in the knowledge that the staff here with go that extra mile to ensure that all the details are in place to make the customer experience first rate ! James, Edel and the staff at Rowton Hall you are a credit to your industry !! Best Regards Richie Minshull
Fantastic experience: Friend treated me to a couple of days away for my birthday. It’s in a nice secluded location and we are really happy with the service provided. Friendly service from the team on site from reception through to the dining area. Room is spacious and clean for the two of us and the bed is very comfortable. Highly recommended.
Positive experience: Lovely location on the out skirts of Chester, just off Whitchurch Road. Friendly staff and good meeting facilities . Nice bar area with views to the outside.
Fantastic experience: Lovely Christmas setting for my dad's 100th birthday. Beautiful lunch served to 50+ people. Abbey and staff were very pleasant and attentive, enabling the celebration to go without a hitch.
Fantastic experience: The hotel and spa and facilities is amazing. Food and staff are wonderful couldn't ask for any better. It is excellent value for money We will be back next year
Positive experience: I would give this hotel a 3.5/5 star. Here are the Pros and Cons. Pro: Lovely big room. Friendly Staff . Cons: I dont know who controlled the temperature but the room was so hot. Old windows that rattle in the wind. Pool and showers was a little cold but they did have a note saying an engineer was on the way to fix this.
Fantastic experience: What a fantastic hotel. We had our Golden Wedding celebration dinner on the 3rd November 2023. What a brilliant evening we all had. The ballroom was beautifully decorated. Our drinks reception was in the attached conservatory. Amy and Abby made sure everything was perfect. The 3 course meal was very well presented, hot, and served by very efficient and friendly staff. We had excellent choice and all types of food preferences were catered for. As it was a private party our Labrador was with us the whole time. He was spoilt by the staff and even had a 2 course meal of sausages then roast beef and gravy. (As you can imagine this went down a treat). The bedroom we had was on the ground floor with a patio door onto the gardenm which is great for letting the dog out at night. The room was very comfortable with everything you needed. There was even a welcome gift for the dog and a food dish and bone mat. The extensive grounds were well maintained and great for having a walk, with or without a dog. We had 26 who stayed and we were able to all eat breakfast together. Another breakfast of sausages for the dog. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and made it a wonderful celebration. A truly dog friendly hotel.. 50 GOLD STARS. We will be back and that's a promise.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful location, amazing staff looked after us perfectly, the food is delicious. Highly recommend!
Negative experience: Paid £350 in total for a spa package one night stay. Arrived the room was dated, wallpaper hanging off the wall. Bedding was ripped, biscuit crumbs on the side and it was absolutely freezing. Reception shown us other rooms but these were also freezing and not what to expect for a superior room. One room wasn’t ready yet would have to wait 30 minutes for but our treatment was due in 20 minutes leaving us no time to get sorted. Absolutely not to the standard you would expect for a spa over night spa stay. Absolutely not worth the money! Left us no choice to leave and only received £250 refund because the spa treatments are non refundable. I think any hotel should offer a full refund if it’s not up to standard they look and claim on their website! Regardless off staffing or you wouldn’t sell that slot for the spa. Why would anyone want to stay in a cold, dirty hotel? We had to let them keep the £75 for the pleasure of viewing rooms that were all just as disappointing! Lady showing us round did offer us some heaters and was trying to be accommodating however there’s just lack of vigilance with expectations with the rooms.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely spa day for 4 of us!! was an amazing experience everyone was so so lovely & very professional! So relaxing, will definitely be going back
Fantastic experience: Went for a wedding fair. Very nice, expensive and posh. Outside sun terrace, indoor bar and seating, spa. Quite small parking area. Lovely setting
Fantastic experience: Attended a wedding, the food was out of this world and the venue is excellent.l, the only negative was the attitude of one bar staff member whose approach to customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
Fantastic experience: Attended Tom and Emma's wedding here. What a beautiful setting. Staff really friendly and accommodating. We stayed in another hotel close by as they had no rooms left for the night before the wedding. So when turned up the following morning our room was clearly not ready but we were able to leave our luggage with them at reception. After the ceremony we proceeded to check in by this time we were able to. Our luggage had already been taken to our room. Food was amazing.
Fantastic experience: Great place, great food, great people. Perfect for events or a quiet retreat. And most of all, one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. Everything fresh and freshly prepared.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful building with lovely spacious and well equipped rooms. Suites and apartments are amazing and a real treat to stay in. Staff are friendly and obliging. Lovely grounds to walk in in the good weather
Fantastic experience: I attended a wedding reception /evening here and it was perfect. The food was amazing and the building and grounds were beautiful. Staff were lovely too. I would definitely recommend.
Negative experience: It was probably a high end venue at some time in the past but unfortunately feels tired and well past its prime despite the fact they appear to be trying to freshen it up with a lick of paint. Service was average at best, being left standing on a couple of occasions looking for staff. Don’t think we’ll be back.
Fantastic experience: Superb cannot fault this hotel ..what lovely food great sleep so comfortable, would definitely visit again ..amazing garden
Fantastic experience: Went to a wedding here. It was absolutely lovely. People staying allowed me to change in their rooms and they were like suits. Amazing.
Fantastic experience: Great food, especially bar menu. Reasonable drink prices. Very friendly and helpful staff. Not far from a park and ride taking you into Chester. 2 pubs in walking distance from Hotel. Enjoyable visit.
Fantastic experience: Wowsers. What a wedding venue, the service and organisation were incredible, the manager was on it making sure everything was set up and running like clockwork. Gorgeous grounds, perfect intimate setting.
Negative experience: We arrived for a two night stay and initial impressions were good. However, our room was a disappointment to say the least. For the money we were paying per night we do not expect windows (single glazed) without latches and shoddy paintwork, threadbare carpet in the dressing area, paintwork/wallpaper chipped off on all four corners of the arched walk through to dressing area and the main door had a large chunk of the veneer broken off so it was showing the bare wood underneath. Breakfast was good but if you want traditional full English or eggs royale for instance, you pay extra, even on a b&b rate. The plus side was the staff. Friendly and attentive.
Negative experience: Extremely disappointing 2 night stay. Small, dated, dirty rooms that are falling apart. When we arrived they told us sorry you can’t use the pool at all on your stay as there’s some work being done to fix something. No call was made to us to let us know prior to us arriving which is extremely disappointing. The towels in our room were filthy (black dirt all over one which we couldn’t believe the cleaner didn’t spot), so had to take those back to reception. We stressed our disappointment and the polite receptionist spoke to her manager and offered us £30pp for dinner for one night in the main restaurant. This was appreciated until we waited over 45 mins for the worst steak I’ve had. Steaks were £29.50 and that’s without any chips or sauce. The worst meal and service I’ve had in a restaurant for a long time. The bar was a lot nicer. Breakfast was brilliant and the staff were attentive and much friendlier in the morning. We would not recommend this hotel at all.
Positive experience: Really easy to find (using Sat Nav & Postcode) Staff friendly & attentive. Grounds really picturesque. The room really nice on first viewing but details needed attention especially for the price paid. No other facilities were used.
Positive experience: We arrived for afternoon tea so this is what I'm basing my review on. Beautiful surroundings and gardens, everything seemed clean and presentable. We were spoilt by the weather which made for a placement visit. However we booked a 2 x adult and 2 x children afternoon tea. We received 4 small finger sandwiches between 2 adults, one sandwich was a 3rd of a normal size all different fillings. This gave us very little verity. I have enjoyed many afternoon teas and I would of expected double this between 2 people as standard. A typical cake stand accompanied the sandwiches. 2 scones, 2 egg custard tarts, 2 Brownie's, 2 victoria sponge and I think 2 lemon Cakes. Small 8n size but adequate, unfortunately the sponges were very dry and not very pleasant. The children we're given 3 cheese and 3 ham finger sandwiches between them and we had to ask a couple of times if they were to get the cakes that were advertised on their website. The staff although pleasant and helpful didn't seem to know what the standard were. They did bring out more cakes, I will add their brownies were delicious and we all enjoyed them. However we didn't eat much else due to the quality. Apparently they are changing their menu which was why there was a confusion. Personally I feel there are better afternoon teas on offer and I wouldn't recommend Rowton hall for this. However I can recommend the location, gardens and general vibe to anyone looking to enjoy an afternoon.
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful wedding we had, we could not have wished for better. Karen, our wedding organiser was exceptional from the off. Keeping us on track, offering helpful advice, taking all our wishes and concerns seriously and in her stride to ensure we really did have the most special day, focused on what we wanted. Nothing was too much trouble. Her attention to detail ensured we didn’t miss a thing. Matt, the head chef, delivered a wonderful meal, it really was outstanding if the feedback from our guests is to be believed! It was timely, hot, plated with finesse & tasted wonderful. Tony & Kieran executed our plans with excellence. Not only did they deliver all we asked for but the way in which they did it made us all feel welcomed & relaxed as though the place was our own (even though it wasn’t an exclusive event). The walled garden, conservatory and the ballroom all worked beautifully for us (80 guests on a sunny day). We felt that the whole team cared about us and our day and we saw that throughout the planning, in the delivery on the day and after … we were treated like royalty when we visited a few weeks later for afternoon tea! We can’t praise or thank them highly enough. E&R
Fantastic experience: Attended a wedding. Stayed for 2 nights. Was a bit wary after the first afternoon service was a bit slow. Had no need to be though as after this everything was perfect. Food, staff, breakfast, room and spa( my son loved the pool and gym) were all excellent. Lovely place to stay. And thanks to Tony the wedding organiser who seemed to be there all hours of the day. Wedding was great.
Positive experience: Great hotel and amazing staff. The food was excellent and really enjoyable and I have a number of dietary requirements. My only issue was with other residents with absolutely no respect. It seems chester Race Ladies' day was on. Shouting loud behaviour and going through fire doors. Led to very little sleep on my third night. The hotel tried to quiet them.
Fantastic experience: Thank you for a relaxing afternoon, the team at the spa were amazing! Lounge bar food was fantastic: prawns, hummus & superfood salad
Fantastic experience: This might sound like a review by someone who works for the hotel but I promise that we are in no way affiliated with them - just guests for a three night stay (a gift from my parents). We were simply blown away by the suite we were given - beautiful, stylish and comfortable. The staff couldn't do enough for us and the breakfast was amazing. The only thing I could see as an improvement would be a soap dish - I mean seriously this was fantastic and I would not hesitate in going back.
Fantastic experience: We celebrated our Nana's 90th birthday and rented out one of the function rooms. We stayed for 2 nights in total and had the best time! The staff were incredible and made our stay so enjoyable. The food was so good! We had two evening meals and breakfast, and both were so tasty! I have a gluten intolerance and the staff were so attentive to my needs, even bringing me gluten-free bread or a roll with breakfast without me even asking! I also had my little one with me, and they offered to wash her bowls and utensils, they even had a little toy she could use to keep her entertained during mealtimes. Tony and Hazel really are wonderful, and we really got to know them during our stay - we felt so welcomed and cared for. The pool was lovely - my little one's first time in the pool. Overall, an amazing stay, we had such an amazing time celebrating my Nana, we will definitely come back!!
Fantastic experience: Great service, beautiful setting. The spa is nice. Was promised a fruit bowl mind that we didn't get but all in all the stay was very pleasant
Fantastic experience: Wife used venue for baby shower. Venue was lovely, staff helpful and afternoon tea was amazing. I visited bar - lovely cosy little space with nice fire (and San Miguel on draft!)
Negative experience: We visited Rowton Hall as a treat and even paid extra to upgrade to the Master suite with wine. The room was big with a nice 4 poster bed but the bathroom was freezing and so was the so called hot tap water with a tiny basic shower and a used dressing gown was left behind! There was a tv but most stations wouldn't work and no Sky/Netflix. The windows were cracked with flaky paint. It really needs a refurb. We visited the spa & what could be a nice outdoor seated area instead had mouldy green mildew & mossy cushions!! The changing rooms are nice with good showers but there were dirty towels piled up in the entry & scattered around the changing area. The pool is quite nice. We went for lunch & had to go to reception to find any serving staff! Afternoon tea leftovers were left out despite it being a quiet Monday. We enjoyed our evening meal and breakfast was really good. It's a shame staff don't clean up and provide good service. We couldn't believe a service charge was added to our bill despite bad service! It really isn't a 4 star hotel or worth the price.
Fantastic experience: Always a pleasure to stay at Rowton. The team are so lovely, friendly and helpful. They wait on you hand and foot, even breakfast is served to you, (no buffet style, get your own here!) The food is exceptional and much of it grown in their own kitchen garden! Got to be a 5 star
Negative experience: This is a copy of my complaint to the hotel for which I am still awaiting a reply. I came for a spa day in January, booked and paid ahead for the well-being spa day at £125. evening before I received a phone to call to say that my treatment time would have to be changed due to staff shortages, I wasn’t wholly happy but appreciate these things happen and accepted the change. Upon arrival, in spa reception I was greeted by a quite frantic member of staff who seemed to be dealing with not only the spa bookings but the main hotel reception as there was a diversion through the hotel, following a 15 minute wait I was seated and presented with forms to complete. The reception was cold and draughty and I couldn’t help but think about if this is where I am going to have my lunch/afternoon tea I didn’t want to do it in my robe but would get dressed between treatments and using the spa. Once in the ladies changing room this was even colder, I was not feeling inspired to get undressed and into swimwear and robe. The first two lockers I tried did not work, there was dirty towels and robes piled up, bits of wet tissue all over the floor. None of the mirrors could be used as they were so steamed up due to the conflicting temperatures of the changing room/doors being opened. Speaking to another guest she was saying how she had previously been a member but was no longer as everything had really gone down hill and she was thinking of not returning again. The shower area felt unsanitary and at least one of the shower units was out of use. The pool area was dirty and hairs and bits of rubbish were visible around the pool area, there were no cushions for the loungers. The fittings for the inspection hubs have rusty screws, the staircase leading from pool area to spa is unsightly and does not make you feel in the beautiful surroundings that the website leads you to believe. I dressed for my lunch and sat in the cold lounge area with a towel over my knees to keep warm, whilst sitting there it became very apparent that many guests treatments were not only altered at short notice but some even cancelled and them not being informed until they reached the spa. There was deliberation over refunding a guest who’s treatment was cancelled, reception wanting to issue a gift voucher which understandably the guest did not want. The young lady that did my treatment was lovely however I had booked and paid for a 75 minute treatment and was in and out in under an hour. The relaxation room felt dirty, littered with used water glasses, bulbs not working in lamps and old, bobbly blankets on the beds. After my treatment I couldn’t relax I just wanted to leave. All in all the experience is not one I want to repeat or will recommend. I don’t mind spending good money on something special but this was far from special, very mediocre and certainly below 4 star standard.
Positive experience: 1 night stay for the Hubby's Birthday, room was very big especially the bathroom which was fab, couldn't turn the radiator down at all which made room far too warm especially for sleeping(should of contacted reception so my error)both used spa pool which was lovely, evening meals were good except steak I had was tough.breakfast was very good.receptioned overcharged on checking out by over £100(I had already paid)
Positive experience: Sunday night check-in to a very comfortable twin with patio and views of walled garden. Complimentary bottle of wine and excellent evening meal in palatial calm surroundings. Quiet service and nothing too much trouble - excellent welcoming check-in.
Positive experience: Searched for a spa hotel and booked a christmas break here for the whole family who love swimming. Turned up on the first day and the pool was freezing cold and wasnt sorted at all during our stay, very disappointed as this was the reason for coming to this hotel which advertises itself as a spa hotel. The food was good but I was served a drink in a broken glass, fortunately we had the price reduced for the bottle which was fair enough. This hotel could be so much better. It wasnt exactly inexpensive either, they need to raise their game.
Negative experience: The hotel is beautiful and all staffs are good. But the receptionist Julia ruined our stay. I made a full payment for my parents’ breakfast a day earlier. But the receptionist didn’t check the system and insisted that they didn’t pay. She is so rude, unprofessional and arrogant, never apologize for her mistakes. We’ll never return to this place again.
Positive experience: Really friendly staff and overall a pretty and warm hotel. The food was delicious! Really kind to leave a doggy gift box, knowing we're bringing our dog. Hotel could do with some renovation and retouching. Our room was comfortable but Abit withered and tired. I assume we got shabbier room as it was dog friendly. Me and my partner booked spa treatments. His massage was great and he really enjoyed it. Unfortunately the lady I had (Red head lady) was friendly but seemed distracted and my massage was weak and overall disappointing. My partner then had a head massage booked with her too and he felt the same. We were also disappointed by the pool being cold due to the boiler breaking that morning. It would've been good to have been informed asap on this and be offered some type of complementary compensation as we were both really looking forward to using the pool.
Fantastic experience: We came to spa for a spa day. The lady in reception was lovely and took a great care of us. Very attentive during our afternoon tea. Treatments were brilliant so were facilities. The pool was warm and amazing Would recommend and we will be back
