PureGym London Orpington Central - Upgrade complete!

Fantastic experience: I took the pump class with Adam as teacher and it was honestly the BEST class I have ever taken. Very clear instructions and fun!

Positive experience: Been here a few weeks and decent enough. Lacking air con though, can't they just have a year-round regular temperature? Especially by the cardio machines, absolutely boiling. Need another two leg machines (quad and hamstring curls).

Positive experience: Well located near the high street for Orpington and free parking nearby. Good facilities but not quite up to the standard of GOLD Gym or Virgin Active Bromley. Friendly staff though, and reasonable prices for membership.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member of Pure since January 2023 and have used the gyms in Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, but Orpington is by far, the best gym I've ever been a member of. As a petite woman, I have never felt intimated in what is quite frequently a male dominated space, and the staff have clearly worked hard to foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels part of the community. The facilities are great; good, modern equipment, and plenty of it. Seen reviews saying it's busy and there isn't enough equipment - I've never had an issue using any of the machines/free weights, and I go either at lunchtime or between 5pm - 7pm weeks days, and between 8am - 11am at the weekend. Granted, January has an influx of new year resolutions, and the summer months have more school children, but that's the case for any gym. The variety and volume of classes are brilliant, starting at 6:30am, which is perfect if you work in central, and the instructors are so friendly, they make attending a class enjoyable. - I used to hate spin but now I go twice a week! They are also extremely knowledgeable and have provided plenty of alternative exercises for my needs. I honestly think I wouldn't be going as much if it wasn't for the instructors. If you're looking for a friendly, well-equipped gym, with a real sense of community, this is the gym for you.

Fantastic experience: Friendliest gym in Orpington. Good selection of well maintained kit, open 24hrs, excellent value for money & approachable and helpful personal trainers. Day passes available online, or at the door via QR code. Just bring a padlock for the locker.

Negative experience: Full of chavs, stinks and is too busy.

Fantastic experience: Really helpful staff and it is quieter in the mornings when I do my workout. The manager Adam really helped me when I was nervous about using something for the first time and stayed with me until I felt more confident. Went to Niall’s class for the first time and enjoyed that.

Fantastic experience: I joined PureGym in January and as a bigger girl was so nervous about walking in but there was no need to be, staff are so friendly and will help if you don't understand anything and show you good form, other users have all been incredibly nice and have helped and even complimented me on progress. I actually love it here, the equipment is all working and kept in good condition, the cleaners keep it spotless and it's just genuinly a nice community of people to belong to!

Since it's a group and scheduled class they will be fully focused on the workout session. Will be continuing with Puregym. Right now renovations are going on. So had to go to Bromley gym. Class schedule is better at Orpington gym

Positive experience: I’m a PureGym member from another part of the country and visited here while working locally. Great spin class, didn’t catch the instructor’s name unfortunately but he was very friendly and gave clear instructions - one of the best and most enjoyable spin classes I’ve done at Pure. Didn’t spend much time in the gym itself but it seemed decent with everything as it should be. Not the newest equipment but decent enough. Showers were clean. Would go back if I was in the area again.

Fantastic experience: It is one of the many Pure Gyms I attend. This one is a walk away from my current residence. Friendly staff and guests. I go to this gym late at night when it's quiet, as during weekdays after 6 pm, it's like a clubhouse lol....

Positive experience: Decent small gym. Have been a member for years, including before the gym shutting down due to a burst pipe. The current layout makes less of the limited space imho. Also the gym is oversubscribed. In recent months, this is very apparent even at off-peak times, especially with the hordes of school kids pretty much just hanging out at the gym. Friday evenings sessions after work are like Monday evenings now. If I didn't get 2 hours free parking, would've left a long time ago. Also what's the point of numbered dumbbells stations when most members miss match the dumbbells without reproach from staff? At times it can feel like finding a needle in a haystack looking for a pair of dumbbells.

Negative experience: Not the best pure gym... Its consistently over-busy no matter what time you go. Needs relocating to a larger site really. It's also consistently roasting inside, and it's impossible to reach the sinks in the changing room with the amount of dudes shaving in there, what is this?!

Negative experience: Constantly overcrowded. Can never get on equipment even at off peak hours. Groups of students blatantly sharing entry codes, eating McDonald’s in the changing rooms and stinking of BO. Zero standards enforced, people just do who they like.

Positive experience: Great shoulder workout with my cousin. Will definitely go train there again whilst here on holiday!

My husband and I were visiting from America and had some confusion in the beginning about getting a membership for two weeks, Mark was extremely helpful, polite, and accommodating. He made us feel comfortable and gave us a proper British welcoming. Great guy. Thanks Mark! We will definitely be back next time we visit and will recommend this gym to family and friends!

Fantastic experience: Clean, friendly gym with a large range of machine's and weights, different classes to participate in such as yoga and spin classes. Staff are really good and are very happy to give advice. You can book a personal trainer if wanted aswell. I would definitely recommend this gym if like myself you are self conscious and embarrassed because both staff and other members are really friendly and I have not ever encountered any negativity.

Positive experience: Have used on and off for a number of years and visited at different times of the day and always a nice place to go. Most of the time there is plenty of space and plenty of equipment available and seems very clean. Recently however I have found there to be lots of teenagers in groups that come towards the end of the school day (which I have nothing against generally and encourage younger people to use the gym) but they spend a lot of time doing nothing in big crowds around the machines without using them and is extremely iterating when you want to use them. They also treat the mens changing rooms terrible leaving stuff everywhere like a changing rooms at school.

Fantastic experience: I really enjoy using this gym, there's a great range of equipment, sometimes you have a little wait for the popular equipment (at busier times). The gym has really good and helpful staff, there's always cleaning products to hand and overall it's clean and tidy. Lastly, it's great value for money. You'd be daft not to try it.

Positive experience: Really good gym, most people clean the equipment after use. Some classes are £4 which is a shame but understandable as they're run by people who rent the room. Price seems okay too

Positive experience: So I came here after being a visitor at the reading pure gym bear Sainsbury's. The differences are alot in my opinion with Orpington failing to meet the standard I saw in reading. The first was the state of the machinery , dated, old, one even had an error, even the variety didn't have what I expected, for example there was no assault bikes. The rest of the the premises had a dated feel compared to reading, perhaps moving this to a warehouse type premises not far from the existing location would be better.

Positive experience: good gym in general, however no equipment to do hip thrusts in the weights area. Eg. 'The Hipthruster', or just a bench that is the right height to use for it. That would be very popular and would get more women in the weights area I think.

Fantastic experience: Like the fact that all age groups go go there..can have a really great workout on a variety of machines

Positive experience: I really love going to Orpington Pure Gym, it has a great atmosphere, good mix of ages, very good equipment and it is kept a lot cleaner than most gyms. However- I'm disappointed that there is no suitable bench to use for women to do barbell hip thrusts, and this is my favourite exercise to do (and an important one for glute strengthening). The normal benches are about 3-4 inches too high, you can incline the edge of it but the ends are rounded so this is actually quite dangerous to use it this way, as you can lose balance with the heavy bar. The plyo box is a good height, but they are kept in the studio which is very far across the gym from the weights area, which means I have to carry the heavy box round and back again when I have finished, which is extremely hard as I'm not a heavy lifter (not to mention wasting time). Sometimes there are classes on so I can't interrupt and go in to carry out the big plyo box. This problem has made me look for other gyms just to have a bench of a reasonable height for women to do hip thrusts on, which I think is quite a silly problem when all it would require is one bench.

Positive experience: I've come here for 7 years now & can honestly say that here they have the best staff ever (all the PT's). I'd give them 5 stars, easily. The majority of the equipment is good & regularly cleaned. It would be great if they could fit 1 more squat rack in as these are incredibly popular yet there are only 3. There's a very good number of cable attachments, though they could do with some more handles. A big downfall is that they don't invest in better/new larger equipment. For example they have the cheapest & worst leg press known to humankind, there are absolutely no bars designed for females (yet the other local gyms all accommodated female Olympic bars ), and when any equipment is broken it takes AGES to fix (e.g. the hamstring curl machine was down for at least 3 weeks). The PureGym company itself is quite strange. A lot of great PT's have left PureGym simply due to the fact that PureGym charge them £750 per month to provide their services at the gym. Firstly, I don't understand why it's so much? If it was less then perhaps PT's could afford to charge gym-goers less & gain more clients. Secondly, why is it a fixed rate? Surely a percentage of their earnings makes more sense. Thirdly, where on earth is all the money going? The number of people of who have a PureGym subscription in the UK is enormous, so they already have a huge ingoing cash flow per month, and clearly no equipment gets much investment....so tell me, where is the money going? Is it necessary to charge PT's such a ridiculous fixed amount? FYI I have never worked for PureGym - but I know a lot of PT's across UK who have mentioned this and not many people know about it. It's still an okay place for the standard gym-goer to complete their workout, but if you go to other gyms in the UK then you'll notice the stark difference in equipment quality.
