Our comment from FitFit UK about Chartham Park:
Chartham Park Golf and Country Club, located in East Grinstead, offers a beautiful and inviting atmosphere for both golfers and fitness enthusiasts. The golf course is often praised for being well-maintained, with fast greens and stunning layouts that challenge players of all levels. Many visitors have remarked on how the course holds up well even in wet conditions, making it a top choice for golf in Sussex.
Members appreciate the club's friendly and helpful staff, who go above and beyond to ensure a great experience. From accommodating special requests during events to providing excellent customer service, the team is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment.
While the golfing facilities receive high marks, some users have expressed concerns about the gym and pool areas, citing issues with outdated equipment and cleanliness in the changing rooms. Despite this, several members have enjoyed the variety of classes offered and the overall community feel of the club.
In summary, Chartham Park serves as a solid option for those seeking a combination of golf and fitness, although potential members should be aware of some areas that may need improvement. With its lovely setting and vibrant atmosphere, many are eager to return and enjoy all that the club has to offer.

Chartham Park: Opinions
Fantastic experience: The East Grinstead Business Association recently held its annual Golf Day on behalf of The Greenaway Foundation at Chartham Park Golf And Country Club. Although the weather did its absolute best to dampen spirits the team at Chartham Park did an absoulte amazing job. Nothing was too much trouble, they change arrangements to accommodate the weather and always on hand to help with everything. As novice golfer the course was really good and challenging, and although water logged we were able to get round in pretty good time. We would highly recommend the Chartham Park for its facilities and the team for being so upbeat and accommodating.
Fantastic experience: Such a beautiful club & the staff bend over backwards to make it a great place to go. Like every club it’s got some areas that are due developing but the golf course is stunning & me, my son & my wife love our gym & swim visits!
Negative experience: I am a member and regularly use Nizels gym and spa facilities which are superb! I used Chartham Park as a one off whilst Nizels do some maintenance on the spa and pool area. Chartham park is extremely average. The gym equipment is old, not maintained and rusty. The changing rooms feel neglected. The whole place needs updating and a good clean, especially when you charge a premium price.
Negative experience: I have been a member at Chartham for around three years with my son. The only reason I still go to Chartham is because the other gyms in the area do not offer a pool, easy parking and kids classes . Chartham park would never get away with what they charge if there was another club alike to theirs locally, they only get away with it because most of the others in east Grinstead are ‘high street gyms’ rather than a health club like Chartham, however they do not keep the facilities up to standard. Definitely not work the £130 a month . The gym equipment is frequently out of order, the equipment is old, the classes are always fully booked, the pool floor has so many missing tiles and cracks, if the steam room is working you can guarantee that the jacuzzi or sauna will be broken, the shower pool side is always broken , the jacuzzi has rust marks everywhere, the showers in the changing room are disgustingly dirty, cold and weak, the toilets are always dirty, when you order food you could be waiting an hour, the water fountains are warm water, the driving range ball machine never works, the staff are over worked and under paid and in general the entire club looks tired
Negative experience: I have been coming here for so many years, I pay about £115 a month after numerous price increases. The management is nothing short of terrible, the gym is small and often crowded, the tiling in the pool is torn to shreds, the wet facilities are often out of use, the classes are always fully booked, the food wait time is around an hour, showers come out like a cold dribble if you time your visit wrong and any complaints fall on deaf ears. The real issue here is after years of complaints from so many members (check their facebook comments) they do absolutely nothing to resolve any of the issues or their sub par facilities . Instead they invest into building a new pergola out back taking up the very little outside space for absolutely no reason at all?
Positive experience: The golf course is in great shape, fairways and greens are in first class condition. Unfortunately the bunkers do not match the quality of the rest of the course. Rain on Thursday clearly hadn't helped and many bunkers were full of water and that suggests poor drainage and heavy soil underneath. The sand in the bunkers that had no water was very heavy and there was no depth to it. Moral of the story enjoy a great course in great condition at the moment and stay out of the bunkers.
Positive experience: Great course, challenging but enjoyable, will be coming back Came this close to a hole in one!
Positive experience: Good course in excellent condition
Negative experience: Unfortunately they have priced people out of the market with the exorbitant prices they charge for gym membership. Venue and facilities are ok but not at the current prices
Negative experience: Be very carful Joining this club. The jacuzzi rarely works, no soap in showers, dirty boxershorts left in showers and rarely cleaned. I complained that I have not been able to use the services and had to leave without having had a swim or a jacuzzi followed by a shower with no soap. They are still trying to insist on payment in full with no acknowledgment of the poor service . Awful club. Stay clear. Better going to your local leisure centre.
Positive experience: Very beautiful place to visit if you belong to The Club. I looked at the other Clubs and noticed that The Warwickshire has Pilates Reformer, with machines. Do you foresee that this type of class will be introduced this year at Chartham Park? I find my membership quite expensive. If Pilates Reformer is introduced I will renew my membership otherwise I will have to cancel as I found a local instructor near where I live. Moreover, I did not go in December to the Club and no one noticed. I was hoping to get an email following up why I was not attending the Club. I had to travel to my home country to visit my mother who lives on her own and was having trouble. Also my birthday was ignored. If I can cancel the membership I would otherwise I will have to keep going until the contract ends. I enjoy the classes but I do not feel this place is right for my well being, mentally and physically.
Negative experience: Good facilities but definitely feels more like a kids club, if you're wanting something relaxing then this probably isn't the place for you!. Also if you have any plans of using the pool, don't bother, it's always busy, full of kids and impossible to swim lengths in. Shame the whole club is clearly oversubscribed and adult members (the ones paying the most) don't seem to be the priority.
Positive experience: Not a bad place but a bit overpriced for what is offering £80. I had one year of membership. For kids they had a very nice deal and activities, but for me I could ever book my class, it was always on waiting list and not enough place for workout, busy. Staff was never give me a good advise too. But swimming pool was always clean. I recommend this sportclub for people who would like to have friends, there are nice atmosphere with café zon and golf.
Fantastic experience: It is probably one of the top courses in Sussex maybe top 6.
Fantastic experience: Very nice clean gym ,staff are amazing
Fantastic experience: Great condition very helpful staff will play it again soon
Fantastic experience: Awesome golf course, challenging with a number of features and a lot of bunkers, but greens were fast and relatively true. One of the best courses in the area. Staff were brilliant too, very helpful and welcoming. Only popped up for a midweek twilight round but will be back.
Thank you for your feedback, I will pass this on to the team.
Fantastic experience: Lovely condition green keeper Graeme top bloke and green keeper Paul smashing it
Thank you for your feedback, I will pass this on to the team.
Negative experience: Really poor. Air con is either freezing in places or non existent in others. TV monitors in equipment don’t work despite several complaints nothing was done, manger, reception and gym personnel all asked . Went elsewhere
I am sorry to hear about your recent visit to Chartham Park Golf Club. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me at the club. Regards Scott
Fantastic experience: Played society game. Course was great condition. Had an excellent full English breakfast before starting.
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your time at Chartham Park. We hope you will be back soon.
Negative experience: Not a bad place but a bit overpriced for what is offering, I found facilities to be often too busy and cramped for my liking, it doesn't take too many people to get in the wet spa to get too busy and cramped, always something is broken or out of service. I had it with the lockers in the changing room. It is a lottery to know which one is actually working, and which one doesnt. Well it takes me a few attempts to get lucky with a working locker, but then hey- ho, i have nothing better to do but searching for my "lucky locker" for some time!! It even feels so "rewarding" when i finally got " a winner of a locker, yupeee"!!! What shocked me last week was a lady joined me in the jacuzzi only to ask me to switch the bubbles off, as the bubbles in the jacuzzi was bothering her, so well go back home and take a hot bath instead. It is called jacuzzi for a reason. And it is not happening for first time. So yeah will be cancelling my membership soon. Is just not working for me anymore. I wish we had David Lloyd in locallly everything looks so much spacious for similar monies
Fantastic experience: Lovely facilities the staff is friendly and welcoming
Thank you for your feed back.
Negative experience: I was a member for two months, used the pool almost every other day for over 30mins. However, one day I was told the pool had one lane free despite scores of children around. 3mins in and a swimming teacher put a net across in front of me and told me I had to stop swimming due to children's lessons. I sent an email to the gym explaining how frustrating it was to have made the journey, got changed, got into the pool only to be turned out after a few minutes. I received an automatic response, not a personal email. As a result I haven't continued my membership. For £90 a month, I'd expect better service as a member, if the pool is open, it should be useable, and if a polite complaint is made, a response is in order. A restaurant is judged by it's service staff and environment as much as it's food.
Negative experience: Very unhappy with my experience here so cancelled after just a month. The only way to raise issues is via email yet most emails go unanswered. Unfriendly staff, overpriced cafe.... Shame there is no where else locally, I guess they know that though so they behave as they wish.
Good Morning Rebecca I'm sorry you were not happy with your visit last week. I was wondering if you could give me a call at the Golf Club or if you could give me the contact details I will give you a callback. Much Regards Scott
Positive experience: Great gym facilities
Thank you for your feedback, I will pass this on to the gym team.
Fantastic experience: I had a full tour of the club with the General Manager, a hands-on manager who takes pride in his club. Chartham Park continued to impress me throughout the day with an outstanding golf course, gym, pool and spa area. Excellent value for money and has something for everyone.
Thank you, Danny, for your excellent feed back I will pass this on to the general manager. I am glad you enjoyed the golf club. And we look forward to welcoming you back.
Negative experience: The workers just eating a bogey, shouting everyone
Negative experience: No air conditioning over hottest period in living memory, after complaining to head office( pointless complaining on site as you will soon see) 1 month later 2 ineffectual mobile devices suited for a room not a large gym put in place! Complained 9 times on site about gym machines TVs not working including 3 times to manger, nothing until I reached out to head office .if you like gym hot, faulty equipment and run without any common sense this is place for you
Fantastic experience: Really nice people, great customer service and course in good condition.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant lovely course
Fantastic experience: Great golf course. Great staff and great food.
Fantastic experience: Went there for a golf society day. Good quality bacon roll and excellent sausage 'n mash after the golf. Course in very good condition except many bunkers needed raking from recent heavy rains. A good experience . We'll likely be back next year.
Positive experience: Lovely course in very good condition and Lovely food and service
Fantastic experience: Great lively and social golf club. Course was in fantastic condition.
Fantastic experience: Nice course
Fantastic experience: Lovely course. In very good condition. Fast greens. Plus the full English breakfast was yummy.
Fantastic experience: Special vibe at the gym and amongst the staff. Lovely setting and the space is kept very clean.
Fantastic experience: Nice friendly club, great facilities and never too busy
Fantastic experience: As a member at Wharton Park which is another Club co golf club I can play this and 12 other of their golf courses for nothing, but even if I wasn't I'd gladely pay to play this course as a visitor. As we were already in Reading to play Castle Royal in the annual Club Co Captain's day to thank the current and previous captains for their hard work we decided to carry on and play Chartham Park. I'd played it before pre covid and really enjoyed the course then so was looking forward to playing there again. We started the day with a full english and a pot if tea in the golfers bar which was excellent and the staff were very friendly too. On to the course. Well I wasn't disappointed, it was all that I remember and if I lived local it would be the course for me that's for sure. To start the 1st is a par 4 and a drive into the wind with the second over water to the green just to settle the nerves! The par 4 6th is another cracker as you need to hit less than driver as your 2nd shot is over a ravine. The par 5 7th is a really nice hole that follows the edge of the woods followed by a strong par 4 through a gap into the wind to keep your attention. The back 9 has some equally interesting holes waiting to gobble your ball up including the par 5 11th which requires both accuracy and strategy to play it well. If that's not enough the 16th is another lovely par 4 from an elevated tee it dog legs left to another green protected by water. Many of the greens have some serious slopes on them too so accuracy into the green to keep the ball below the hole is a real benefit if you are that skillful. All in all it's a great course, I just wish it was closer to where I live.
Hello Adrian Thank you for such a glowing and thorough review, we appreciate you taking the time and hope to see you back at Chartham again very soon. Kind regards Fran Hepple
Fantastic experience: Cracking country club, good golf course to play
Hi Jamie Thank you so much for this feedback. Chartham Park
Fantastic experience: Nice course. Holds up really well in the wet. Can get foggy though!
Positive experience: Reviewing as an ex-Health & Fitness member, I will say that I had many happy years using Chartham Park gym and pool. The gym is well-equipped with great views over the golf course. I have now gone and joined a different local pool (The King's Centre) because Chartham Park's swimming pool area gave every illusion of being a health spa (with the jacuzzi, steam room etc), but during the school holidays, there was often an aqua class which was followed straight afterwards by Family Time, not leaving an hour's interval for Lane Swimming sessions. This made it more like a council swimming pool. I felt that lane swimmers were the poor relation to families and Golf members. So for me, in the summer, I was paying too much for only a couple of days per week swimming. So, it was farewell to Chartham Park and all the nice friends I made while being a member there. I now swim at a huge pool and pay a fraction of what I paid before. Lastly but not least. If I mentioned that swimmers were being neglected, there was never an apology, only arguments. Yet I always tried to balance my concerns with positive comments too. Well, thanks a bunch and goodnight.
Negative experience: My parents were treated very rudely by staff members and are now considering leaving their membership.
Hello Jax I am sorry to hear that your parents have had a bad experience. Can I please give you a call tomorrow to find out what happened? Kind regards Fran Hepple
Fantastic experience: Diabolical duty manager tonight , really bad feeling on the club now
Fantastic experience: Whilst I am often apprehensive about courses that are younger than myself (I'm pushing 30), and concerned that they will not feel mature, traditional or have any character, there are no such worries to be had at Chartham Park Golf Club. Following two weeks of not playing and a week of course closures due to snow and frost after a cold snap, I went into my round with no expectations, and a sense of fortune and that I was just lucky to be out! Despite the fact that there were 4 temporary greens due to frost, the rest of the course was very much playable and in good condition for the time of year, especially considering the course had a layer of snow a few days prior, which still remained in a couple of shaded areas. The course itself is a modern, resort style layout, with cart paths lining the holes for those that prefer to ride rather than walk, but at no point does the course feel so modern that it feels too man-made, gimmicky or without character, as similar courses can do far too often. With plenty of water hazards, and a fair few wooded areas, there are still hazards to swallow up your ball and help you rack up a number if you go offline! My favourite holes were the Par 4 6th, with its tight tee shot, and tricky approach into the green; the Par 5 11th, which demands 2 long and straight shots to thread the needle and leave a decent pitch into the green; and finally the Par 3 17th, which can be added to my ever growing list of fantastic par 3 17th holes in the county (alongside Cottesmore GC and Dyke GC amongst others!). In summary, Chartham Park is a fantastic modern facility, which oozes class, character and charm, and I look forward to returning in the summer! Fantastic experience: Recently joined and loving it! Course is normally immaculate, facilities great and a lovely community feel to the place.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful course, will be back!
Negative experience: The slowest golf course. Tried to give it another chance. It's just ridiculous. Give it swerve if you like a round to take less than 4 hours. The course itself is in excellent condition.
Fantastic experience: We organised a society golf day for June ‘19 and the course was excellent! Despite some heavy rain days before the greens were fast and true and the course in fantastic condition. We would go back without a second thought.
Jayme Ablitt - thank you for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming back to Chartham Park!
Positive experience: Nice club and the course is in good condition (posted during winter). Comfortable bar area.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member since Dec ‘18 and I’m so glad I joined. Staff are knowledgeable, really care about your wellbeing and goals and the general vibe is very positive and supportive. Particular shout out to James, Annabel and Becki.
Positive experience: Nice course. Played in winter and played well considering wet weather. Will visit again.
Positive experience: Nice course. Fairways in god condition cosidering the dry summer. A couple of tight holes on the front 9. Clubhouse is nice. Shame the entrance is shared with the gym etc.
Positive experience: The club gives preferential rates to those in the know. Gym is good but lacking any squat/deadlift barbells.
Fantastic experience: Great course, very friendly
Fantastic experience: Great place great gym
Positive experience: Nice course. Very good condition. Modern club attached to sports club.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place with lovely views.
Positive experience: Free weights a little lacking - no proper bench
Fantastic experience: Great gym and facilities
Fantastic experience: Great gym, very friendly atmosphere and staff are very helpful and encouraging.
Fantastic experience: Excellent Club, excellent facilities.
Fantastic experience: I have been a member at Chartham Park Gym for 7 years and love the variety of studio classes they offer in the evenings. The gym gets busy during seasonal peeks (New Year) but the rest of the year it provides a great place to exercise, socialise and get fit.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely excellent gym. Members and staff all polite and professional people. Loads of classes. Gym area is modern and clean and rarely have to wait for a station even at peak times. Weights area is sports-people and people looking to get fit rather than take selfies in the mirror of their rippling biceps, they all go to other (cheaper) gyms fortunately. Cafe is good standard, burgers and sandwiches all freshly made. Pool area is clean and quiet (apart from when full of children but they have dedicated "family times" and "adults only". Sauna, jacuzzi and steam room all excellent.
Fantastic experience: Lovely Club with some really friendly staff. Definitely recommend the gym and the Club bar, great views!
Fantastic experience: Good golf course. Pro shop could be more professional, run by the country club reception
Positive experience: Decent course, well laid out with not much room either side of the fairways. The first cut off rough is a bit too long which makes it difficult to find your ball and slows down play significantly
Positive experience: Very nice golf course offering a challenge to most golfers. Good facilities and bar and restaurant.
Fantastic experience: A challenging course. Greens in good condition.
Fantastic experience: Great location! Wonderful golf course
Positive experience: Good course which is quite varied but the bunkers aren't well kept. Clubhouse is pretty good but the food could be better.
Positive experience: A few of us were members here 20 odd years ago and we went back for a nostalgic game. The course has matured nicely and the layout has stood the test of time and I think is an excellent golf course. It was therefore a great shame that the really TERRIBLE greens rather spoiled the game. Really slow and really bumpy. They had obviously been hollow tined but nowhere near enough dressing had been put on . The greens at my course were done 3 weeks ago and are now perfect already. Shame.
Fantastic experience: The more you play the better it gets
Fantastic experience: Top golf course well maintained
Fantastic experience: Great golf course well looked after. Nice club house and staff are really helpful.
Positive experience: Good golf course and facilities
Fantastic experience: Well placed golf and health club. Great facilities. Friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym with excellent and friendly staff. I have been given routines that are just right and have progressed well. It is a lovely place to go. Lovely pool. Part time and over 65 memberships bring the cost down.
Positive experience: I have been a member here for 4 years.....absolutely NO regrets
Fantastic experience: Really lovely course. The greens are fantastic. The course is very well laid out. The clubhouse is excellent with gym and pool.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff
Positive experience: Beautiful course
Fantastic experience: Well layer out and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Puting prices up shame not then maintaining property like they use to Had refit now much better facilities
Fantastic experience: Great gym facilities with friendly and helpful instructors.
Fantastic experience: Played just after a week of heavy rain and the golf course did show this but still was in very good condition. Was very impressed with the greens and the customer service was exceptional. Will be playing again
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym and pool. Always kept very clean and professional.
Fantastic experience: Great golf course. Very well kept. Coaches are also brilliant.
