Royston Leisure Centre is a community hub that offers a range of facilities, making it an excellent choice for families and fitness enthusiasts alike. Visitors have highlighted several positive aspects:

  • Friendly and Helpful Staff: Many users mention the staff's friendliness and helpfulness, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Swimming Lessons: The centre offers quality swimming lessons, with instructors noted for their effectiveness in boosting children's confidence
  • Good Variety of Activities: A range of classes and activities is available, including yoga, Zumba, and Jujitsu.
  • Community Engagement: Many families appreciate the centre's involvement in community activities, especially for children's parties and summer clubs.
  • Clean Pool: While some mentioned cleanliness issues, several users acknowledged the pool's overall good standards, particularly emphasizing the staff's responsiveness during emergencies.

However, there are areas for improvement:

  • Overcrowding: The gym and swimming pool can be very busy, particularly during peak hours, leading to a cramped experience.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Users have expressed concerns about the upkeep of changing rooms and exercise equipment, indicating a need for ongoing maintenance.
  • Booking Issues: Several visitors reported frustrations with class cancellations and a lack of communication about schedule changes.
  • Pricing: Although some feel that the value for money is reasonable, others argue that the costs are high for the services provided, especially with the limited space.

Overall, Royston Leisure Centre remains a well-loved spot, particularly for families and those looking to engage in various fitness activities, while ongoing improvements could enhance the experience even further.

Royston Leisure Centre: Opinions

Negative experience: Do not take your child here if they have SEN my son was faced with discrimination, humility and most of all sadness that his love of swimming was crushed by the swimming teacher :(

George Johnston 9 months ago

Negative experience: We called and they said the inflatable would be up then we got there and they said they were short staffed so me and my kids are Very disappointed

Jim Lidster-Browne 10 months ago

Negative experience: I cancelled my membership, over the phone, a while ago with a member of staff. They reassured me my last payment would come out of my account in October, but I’ve now seen I’ve been charged again for November. I called today to ask for my money back, and they’ve said it’s for me to fix with my bank. This, the poor levels of hygiene/cleanliness in the changing rooms, and the fact their exercise equipment & water stations have been broken for over 6 months (in some cases, like the rowing machines) without repair, mean I wouldn’t recommend anyone to sign up here.

Negative experience: Gym is terrible for anyone under 16 can’t use any weights or use the gym past 17:30 pm and costs £23 a month and when you do turn 16 the price increases massively do not recommended for anyone just go to a good gym

Billy L 11 months ago

Negative experience: Swimming pool is disgusting! Plasters and hair covering the floor. Would not recommend.

Negative experience: Pool very poorly managed under new operating company. It is totally unclear from the website when there are three lanes (fast, medium, slow) available and a lot of the time half the pool is closed for lessons, often with just one child being taught. Staff are clueless - “Don’t know, it’s my first day”. Just awful and also overpriced

Sarah Hardy 1 year ago

Negative experience: Have been attending evening swimming sessions in the last few weeks. Hugely overpriced at £7+ for entry with quite unpleasant changing facilities. On multiple occasions there's been swimming lessons in half the pool (not indicated on website timetable) so the pool is very overcrowded. A big part of my coming here was to help my anxiety and I'm feeling disappointed in the facilities. I wish they'd do more adult only sessions (currently take place once a week for 2 hour slot) or even some quiet sessions to allow people to build confidence.

Fantastic experience: Well maintained and super friendly staffs!

Negative experience: Hi team, there have been several group classes cancelled in very short notice these days. The salsa class was canceled this morning (19/07/2024) when I arrived to the leisure centre. There was no message and notice in advance. The staff said people who paid for the class will get a refund, but I also spent time and money on the class through a membership. I request a refund for the class cancelled by leisure centre. Please refund me as you would refund people who paid for the class. This is not the first time it happened. Yesterday two hours before the group cycling class at 18:00 I got a call saying the instructor cannot make it which is very frustrating. I am paying the full membership and the leisure centre has already been operated with a reduced timetable during summer, and then consistent cancellation of classes with no/very short period makes it even worse. How about you reduce the membership price during summer for the membership? I am extremely disappointed with the service I received. Please refund me the cancelled salsa class this morning. Thanks. Edit on 04/09/2024: Again a few more cancellations of group class without any notice in advance. Talked to reception and not helpful at all. They simply blame the management company transition and did not show any apologies. Very poor management and communication.

Fantastic experience: I highly recommend the Swimming lessons here. Since my children moved their lessons here, they have both progressed quickly and grown in confidence. The instructors are excellent. The monthly cost is relatively expensive but this is good value for money given the quality of the lessons. The facilities are well maintained and this is a safe environment for beginner swimmers. Thank you Iona for giving my daughter the confidence to swim an unbroken 15 meters this morning this was a huge achievement for her.

Fantastic experience: Good. Lovely pool and changing area

Paula Santomauro 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Best gym around. Great classes, great spun and marvellous instructors

Claire Rogers 1 year ago

Negative experience: New to thw area and I've just joined Royston gym. To be honest it really needs some investment and expansion. The facilities would be more appropriate for a village rather than a town. Very small gym, 1 studio and a small 25m pool. It's so busy at peak times and classes are all booked up. Instructors are nice enough but perhaps not as enthusiastic as I would expect. Pool this morning is very dirty on the bottom, lots of dirt and sand. Probably because the showers were out of action! New shower area looks much better but showers in the women's changing area upstairs are cold and there is only 1 loo. Overall, overpriced for what you get but limited other options near by.

Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful 4th birthday party at Royston Leisure Centre. Great bouncy castle, ball pit and toys provided. Very friendly and helpful staff. Can't recommend enough.

Mark Knibbs 1 year ago

Positive experience: My local pool was closed so I popped to Royston. Staff were friendly and the facilities were good. Clocks at both ends of the pool, would be a good addition though.

Lynnie Wellsie 2 years ago

Positive experience: A great leisure centre. Only negative is the amount of room for lane swimming when children's lessons are on.

Olli Beaney 2 years ago

Positive experience: Good swimming pool and gym. Staff is friendly but the lifeguards are often distracted and are not watching so make sure ur watching your kids.

Dave Arnold 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Just use the pool here. But clean facilities Friendly staff and other users

Ellie Danemann 2 years ago

Positive experience: Great gym except one major flaw - absolutely no room to do any floor exercises or physio/ stretches. If there are two people in that area and a class on you will not be able to find room - this reason makes me want to relocate to a gym that has adequate space for this. Other than that, great !

Jonathan “JW” Wilson 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Good sports centre with badminton court's, pool and a gym

Terry Graves 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great facilities for sport with exceptionally professional and helpful staff.

Josie P 2 years ago

Positive experience: Friendly staff, lots of smiling faces and a really nice vibe to the centre. If you’re an avid gym goer this gym could possibly lack in size and equipment and be full of youngsters at 5/6pm but it does the job! The pool is nice, not massive and can be cold ( to be expected) and the changing rooms and showers can be a little dirty. But it’s a lovely community centre!!

Oli 2 years ago

Positive experience: A great place to take my daughter to introduce her to swimming. Only downsides are the changing rooms being too cold sometimes and they could probably do with a bit of investment. Other than that a great place with friendly staff.

Positive experience: Good pool partying

J E 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great pool, clean, efficient, great staff. Today we witnessed a young girl get rescued by a lifeguard, the staff were fantastic, the alarm sounded immediately, all staff came rushing to the pool, everyone was instantly removed from the pool while the incident happened, the lifeguard had ninja like reactions! All was fine in the end and only a minor incident, but if you were ever concerned for your or your child's safety in a pool, then rest assured these guys have got you covered. Well done team!

Fantastic experience: 27.2.22 Another absolutely fabulous and hugely enjoyable Zumba class with Ivana! Her wonderful routines and brilliant choices of music takes us; in her own words, "around the world" in fun packed and full 60 minute work outs. I can't thank you enough, Ivana, for bringing Zumba into my life, and for making every single week so enjoyable, fun and varied, whilst also including our regular favourite routines, too. I really appreciate your huge efforts and commitment to our classes Thank you!

Margaret Seymour 5 years ago

Positive experience: I have a swimming membership and am utilising it well at moment as I train for the Diabetes UK Swim"" Challenge. Pool is great 25m length but can sometimes be busy. Always a lane for length swimming when lessons are on and/or general family sessions, but it can become rather crowded.

Fantastic experience: Always polite friendly staff. Pool is lovely and warm.

Fantastic experience: Had my daughter's birthday party here tonight, second time we've had it at Royston and as before it was awesome. The life guards were brilliant and interacting with all 25 kids, the were friendly, helpful and happy. Great time had by all , well recommended. X

Azu Hatch 7 years ago

Positive experience: Nice clean airy pool.

Paul Durrant 7 years ago

Positive experience: Nice gym, which is generally not too crowded. The pool is good, with lanes for swimming lengths, but sometimes these are restricted due to lessons/club activities so you need to pick your time well.

Cheryl Goudie 7 years ago

Negative experience: Dirty and smelly changing areas. Staff aware if this issue but appear not to care.

Tim Biggs 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: I only use the 25m swimming pool, but this is quite cool (29°C), nice and clean, and they have at least one lane set up all the time, so it is great for lengths (although at peak times this can be a little crowded). I have taken my kids a few times and they enjoy it too, so it's certainly not too cold. They offer a loyalty scheme of "get your 11th swim free" which is good if you don't go often enough to make membership worthwhile- ask for a card at the front desk. You have to pay over a fiver at peak time. Standard changing village with £1 operated lockers. Only downsides are the showers always seem a bit hot to me (but this is a personal preference thing) and the gents toilet often smells a bit.

Emma Bongiorno 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: A great leisure centre with friendly staff, a great gym, a decent pool, and lots of different activities and clubs to choose from. My kids have been to the summer holiday clubs and absolutely loved it!

Carole Cooper 9 years ago

Positive experience: Great team of cheerful, helpful people who make it easy for you to feel comfortable whatever your age, size or level of fitness.

Sharon Jones 9 years ago

Fantastic experience: Very friendly leisure centre, modern surroundings and excellent staff.

Ashley Butcher 9 years ago

Positive experience: Gym is full of great equipment, swimming pool is a decent size however the price does reflect the quality

J Noble 10 years ago

Positive experience: Been a member for just under a year am happy with the gym if a little small and can get busy. But the pool is fantastic mostly very quiet and very very clean. - truly a hidden gem of North Hertfordshire.

Thomascz Thomash 11 years ago

Negative experience: Way too small and way oversubscribed. The gym is tiny, and not very well equipped. It is lacking a lot of the basic equipment that I am used to having at other gyms. The key system drives me nuts. I just like to turn up and do my thing without all the hassle. The weights area is extremely small and generally taken up by kids who stand around chatting for hours on end and hogging the equipment. The swimming pool is also small and usually too busy. Most classes have to be booked 2 weeks in advance to have any chance of getting in. Some of the instructors gave the impression that they didn't really know what they were doing. Some of the staff on reception were less than friendly and was not made to feel valued and welcome. When I was working out in the gym, I would often have a vacuum cleaner pushed under me and around me! Unbelievable! Save the cleaning for when the gym is vacant! Opening hours are not great compared to other places. I don't have much good to say about the place really, extremely disappointed.
