Our comment from FitFit UK about Ashton Leisure Centre:
Ashton Leisure Centre is a well-facilitated sports center located in Wigan, United Kingdom, that caters to a variety of needs for its community. Users often appreciate the cleanliness of the facilities and the friendly staff, highlighting their positive experiences during swimming and fitness classes. The swimming pool area is especially noted for being family-friendly with good swimming instructors and great swimming lessons for children. Visitors also rave about the variety of classes available, from dance to spin classes, and many enjoy participating in the fun and engaging routines provided by enthusiastic instructors.
However, some users have voiced concerns regarding aspects like limited parking and the occupancy restrictions in the pools which can limit swimming space for families. A few have encountered poor customer service experiences, particularly in relation to booking issues and induction requirements for gym access, which have led to frustrations. Despite these criticisms, the overall sentiment remains positive, and many recommend Ashton Leisure Centre for its community-oriented spirit and excellent facilities.

Ashton Leisure Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Good luck with your gym training ( been like this for the last 2 months)
Positive experience: They offer a small pool for young children and babies but have the temperature of the water far too cold. Some of the little ones we're shivering, then the showers were also cold, so they couldn't even warm up in there before getting dressed very disappointing experience. On a plus the changing rooms were nice and clean.
Positive experience: Facilities are good but let down by the attitude of some of the staff
Positive experience: Great place however went to a pilates class for the first time here and wasn't overly impressed the instructor didn't seem happy that it was my first time, yet it said on the site open to all abilities
Negative experience: Today, myself, husband and my 3year old went for a swim, we went into the big poor due to there was a long wait for the small pool. we could used to go 1.5m mark but now they have half that. Today all of that was full up my daughter had no room to swim let alone other families with kids too. If kids are with a family member and have floats or armband...ect we should be allowed to the 1.5m line. This give use and other families room to actually swim and also safty because people wouldn't get splashed or kicked when swimming and also bumping in to people! Today was such a bad experience and very restricted.
Fantastic experience: Great, nice and clean. Staff on hand. Very fortunate to have this so close.
Positive experience: I enjoy the classes here. My favourite is dance with Danielle. She's lovely, approachable, explains things friendly, fun, great routines which she changes to keep you challenged. Fab class. Reception staff are friendly. Car park is ridiculously small for the amount of cars at peak times. Variety of classes. Haven't used the gym. Changing area for the pool is too small. Don't like the fact it's unisex. It needs bringing into the 21st century. Reminds me of the baths I went to in the 70's!
Positive experience: Nice leisure centre. Clean, good choice of classes and friendly staff. Only downside is a small car park
Fantastic experience: Very nice staff very friendly, clean
Fantastic experience: Very good
Fantastic experience: Great Fun and Floats with our Granddaughter. Superb facility
Positive experience: Nice and clean good swimming instructors
Fantastic experience: I love this centre. I make use of the pool, classes and the gym. The changing room, sauna and steam room are always kept immaculate. Staff are always friendly and accommodating. I’ve used the other facilities within the authority and Ashton is the best in all respects
Fantastic experience: Friendly, helpful staff
Fantastic experience: My six year old started swimming lesson. 2 pools. And being in a wheelchair I'm able to view, get in to changing rooms and poolside if needed
Fantastic experience: Helpful and good OAP discounts
Fantastic experience: It was nice yo see people still wipe down after use not like Robin Park
Fantastic experience: Lovely session here at 14:30 today. Be Well Wigan's aquatherapy with Nicola. 1st visit to this active, welcoming, caring & inclusive way of helping people exercise around their challenges. Try it!!
Fantastic experience: Amazingly well kitted out gym. Love the virtual RPM classes too.
Thank you for your comments - ALC
Negative experience: Ridiculous wanting to charge £12 for an induction when not needed! Only wanted a day pass and would cost me around £22 overall! I’m currently deciding which gym I would like to go to and wanted to try it out but will not be paying that when other gyms are charging £5 for a day pass OUT OF ORDER
Thank you for your comments. The induction process is a requirement as we want to make sure all our customers are fully aware of the equipment / safety, and set up on the system to be able to receive all the benefits of the my wellness equipment and app. The induction also offers a personalised programme whilst you are training in the gym. We don't offer a day pass option across our leisure centres to enable the more personal experience. The wellness key is a standard charge of £10. Thank you - ALC
Positive experience: I'm a regular user of the swimming pool here, and normally I would give it 5 stars, it's a fun, family friendly atmosphere most of the time, with the lifeguards being friendly, helpful and welcoming. However, on this most recent Thursday, there was an incident where a manager berated one of these lifeguards in front of me and the other pool users, Including children. This ruined the atmosphere, and led to me and others packing our things and leaving, due to the treatment of the staff, and the uncomfortable atmosphere it created. I would love to give this place 5 stars, but due to this incident I cannot, I hope Ashton leisure center can treat its wonderful staff better and help uphold the positive atmosphere they create.
Positive experience: Swimming for the kids is great, changing rooms clean. Pool at a warm temp for little ones.
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere

Fantastic experience: Amazing facility, lovely staff, just brill for families
Thank you for your comments, will pass on to the team - ALC
Positive experience: Took baby to his first swim tots, 12weeks old. Staff were lovely and helpful, changing area clean @ 9am. Plenty of baby changing facilities.
Thank you for your comments - ALC
Fantastic experience: Just done aqua arobics loved it
So glad you enjoyed the class - ALC
Positive experience: Very good leisure centre but couldn’t understand why the all-weather pitches were closed unless you paid £20/£40 for a one hour session. It was half term and our group of four kids just wanted a kick around on their own schools’ pitch but couldn’t because of the cost. Surely it wouldn’t do any harm to let kids play football on Council owned pitches in school holidays than leave them empty, after all it’s public money that pays for this facility.
The 3G pitches are shared between school use and leisure use. When school are on half term, leisure do hire the facilities out at a cost just like paying for a swim or gym session. We do run sessions on the 3G through some half terms that are free for children but these are supervised by staff / coaches - ALC
Negative experience: Would help if they bothered to answer the phone
I'm sorry you have been unhappy with the service, we do have alternative methods of contact; social media or email - [email protected]. You can always leave a number on an email and a member of staff will contact yourself. - Carly, Assistant Manager
Positive experience: Great gym, would recommend.
Fantastic experience: Take the grandkids every week the youngest is getting better every time we go recommend it
Thank you for your review, so good to hear the progression your grandchildren are making
Fantastic experience: Great place
Thank you for your review.
Positive experience: Only used the pool and it's ok. Not used any of the other facilities so can't comment.
Thank you for your review, if you wish you can request a tour of our other facilities when your next at site.
Fantastic experience: Great clean pool
Positive experience: Swimming lessons each day during the holidays, great for kids.
Thank you for your comments, hope your child/children had a good time - Carly, Assistant Manager
Negative experience: Poor customer service, been booking football pitches for 3 years with no issues (apart from no one answering the phone) yet current management seem to be on a witch-hunt about using an extra few meters on an empty pitch. The standard of equipment has gone down hill with most nets broken. Last night threatening kick us off the pitches. The leisure centre was supposed to be a community fitness centre and received massive grants. Current management goes completely against this.
Hi Richard, I'm sorry you feel you was threatened. The staff did not ask your booking to leave at any point last night, we were simply asking you to pay for the facilities you was using. The 3G pitch is bookable in thirds (3 in total) or you can book the full pitch. If you are using more than the third you have booked and paid for then you will be required to pay for the extra pitches being used. This is the same for all our customers and clubs using the facilities. - Carly, Assistant Manager
Positive experience: Very busy about 3.30 with school kids
Fantastic experience: Just a great place. Best staff, best resources!
Fantastic experience: Took my nice for swimming lessons no photos
Fantastic experience: Enjoyed my first time at the pool. People are very friendly
Positive experience: Play football here weekly, the surface is good but the wheels are all broken on the nets and the fencing on the perimeter is not high enough
Positive experience: Casual swim on a Monday 12 till 1 good size pool space to swim good value for money £4.30 for a hour which included a locker key
Positive experience: Not enough parking. Dated reception area. No cafe although there is a vending machine near the entrance (unsafe if you have toddlers or young children as doors are automatic and open onto the busy car park) small pool is a reasonable size but you are limited in the week as to when you are able to swim as used a lot by schools
Fantastic experience: Great for ♀️ swimming ♂️
Fantastic experience: Nice stuff, clean and tidy pool.
Positive experience: A bit mixed Lisa on reception. Was really lovely and helpful, but Aqua class a bit dull instructor has no personality and some of the movements are impossible in water..
Fantastic experience: ¹Friendly staff, lots of choice for exercise. The prices are more than reasonable for the choices available.
Fantastic experience: Only just started going back swimming due to Illness since before pandemic, prefer Ashton to Wigan baths ,as I think Wigan baths cold ,
Fantastic experience: Great local sports centre with friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Big family changing rooms. Fab swimming lessons.
Positive experience: This is not good if you want a membership for the gym and also enjoy a swim after as the pool is booked out for so many clubs so is closed to members.
Fantastic experience: I really like this place for swimming. Clean and great staff.
Negative experience: 12 months ago I booked my boy in for lessons. 7 months later I asked where he was on the list. Ummm..... He had been removed. 4 months later still nothing so again we asked ummmm... Deleted again. So I took him to total fitness and only had to wait 4 days
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facility. Take our primary school children for swimming lessons.
Fantastic experience: I go to Ashton leisure center 3 times a week to do my pain management, and my exercise program
Positive experience: Decent facilities. The sports hall roof structure is easily reached when playing badminton. And one day the badminton nets might actually be set up properly
Positive experience: Can't complain whatsoever.
Fantastic experience: A nice little place to visit, we went for a family swim midweek in the afternoon and it wasn't too busy, just schools coming and going. The parking here is free with plenty of space, and there is quite a few family changing rooms, it's unisex so you don't have to go into different rooms and meet up. The kids swimming pool is big enough for families not to bump into each other, and the staff are helpful. I would recommend coming here rather than Wigan life centre, it's much better
Positive experience: Bands sell out quick for the family swims
Negative experience: I asked a question to a receptionist and one of the female manager's they were both ignorant , bad mannered and shouldn't be working with the public , apart from them , it's not a bad . leisure center , nice and clean
Positive experience: very pleasant staff and i always enjoy my experience there every time
Fantastic experience: Great Aqua class
Fantastic experience: Took our 3month old baby boy swimming for the first time on 26th Jan 2022, he loved it.
Positive experience: Love the place and the service desk are very friendly. Definitely understaffed though, turn up 20 mins early to check in for swimming as when there's a queue you can be stood there for ages.
Positive experience: Enjoyed the swim
Fantastic experience: First time visitor and albeit had to travel here I thought staff were friendly and helpful. (My usual leisure centre was shut due to being a COVID jabbing location)
Fantastic experience: I have two of my children at the gym and even though I'm in my mid 50s I am planning on registering myself. Super clean, staff helpful and friendly. Kids are so happy who wouldn't want their kids to get fit and healthy in a brill place. Thank you it's changed my sons life.x
Positive experience: Enjoyed the active experience good teacher very patient with the class look forward to the next class in the new year
Positive experience: Good affordable gym, sometimes too busy.
Fantastic experience: Back to normal no pre booking .
Fantastic experience: No fuss and easy to use. Rachel on reception very helpful
Fantastic experience: Recently joined and couldn't be happier with all the facilities
Fantastic experience: Took the kids for their first swimming lessons today, fabulous coach, was called 2 weeks after initial assessment to book in after expecting it to be much later and very good prices. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: We had a great time swimming and even ended up with pool to ourselves after other got out to dry off
Negative experience: Shocking!!! Have to go in person to book a family swim session because they NEVER answer the phone!!! Try telling a 2 year old you have to take to the pool to book that she can't go for a swim this time!!! Whats the point in paying for a membership??
Fantastic experience: Nice clean leisure centre with gym, pool, sports hall and helpful staff
Negative experience: Unfortunately no answer from reception after multiple calls to book a swim, didn’t want to turn up as most are saying there turned away if no booking is made with the current climate
Negative experience: Absolutely useless. Never answer the phone. Signed up to gym... no information about needing an induction in welcome emails but knew I'd need one, could never get through to book. Booked an online class turned up and was turned away as no one to Induct me. Cancelled my membership there and then in 14 day period... Still got charged first month. Saw family swim available today on the website.. tried to book but wouldn't let me online.. rang several times no answer so decides to just turn up 15 kins before the start time... turned away as not booked with both my mortified kids.. . Absolutely shocking place. Pay that little extra and sign up at total fitness. Loving it here
Fantastic experience: It's a reLy fun place to go swiming and when you are done you can just go to the Jim and the summer camps are realy good
Fantastic experience: I took my 10 month old baby to the family swim, the people who work here are so helpful and friendly, would definitely recommend
Negative experience: Shame... such a nice little local pool for babies and parents, but they never answer the phones EVER!!! and you cannot book family swim online. Resorted to going a st.helens pool as they at least pick up the blower. I usually always try to support local but they are basically doing themselves out of extra business by not picking up.
Positive experience: A council run leisure centre with gym, sauna, sports hall, 3g astro pitches, a grass pitch, a 10 meter small swimming pool and a 25 meter large swimming pool. The swimming lessons here are really good. They have spin and RPM classes in studios next to the gym. There are extra fitness classes that you can book on to as well.
Negative experience: Can never get in touch over the phone
Negative experience: Turned up to a class today which I'd paid for online, wasn't told that the class was cancelled due to no teacher. Was just left in the studio to fend for ourselves. Very poor customer service.
Fantastic experience: Improved , great staff
Negative experience: Cannot get through to anyone in reception whatsoever. Spent around half an hour trying to get through. Joke
Negative experience: Badminton hall is not planned well. U have sun in ur eyes through the roof from 5-7pm during this month (June-July). Also the height is restricted by cross bars on top.
Fantastic experience: Lovely and clean changing rooms. Friendly staff, organised and safe.
Positive experience: Has everything you need for swimming or a work out. Also has plenty of parking
Negative experience: No one answers phone , the girl on the desk has not got a clue , so badly run .
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff , very clean
Fantastic experience: Good machines, friendly staff.
Negative experience: The company who runs the gym membership here doesn't even deserve one star. If your looking to join an over priced, tactic gym,With barely any equipment, then look no further. The company is run by people who care more about making money, then the health and wellbeing of their customers during Covid. There customers service skills are literally nonresistance. The only positive thing about this place was when it was closed. DO NOT GO HERE ! anywhere but here.. go run in the park if you have too.
Fantastic experience: Team are friendly helpful and easy to talk to. My son has his swimming lessons here and they are fab they even have a brilliant covid distancing oneway and safety measures in place
Fantastic experience: Brilliant classes
Positive experience: Good range of equipment
Positive experience: Small a little dated but lovely staff/ really clean facilities/ I was given a coin at reception for locker. Booking is over phone in advance. 2 pools small pool lovely and warm for babies 50 minute swim season and 10 Mon turn around for next season
Fantastic experience: Great little pool. Need to book in advance due to COVID restrictions
Fantastic experience: Great gym, great classes...
Fantastic experience: Fab variety of classes, love the aerobics and zumba. Tried body combat tnite , brilliant instructor, atmosphere fantastic and all socially distanced. Well done Ashton team
Fantastic experience: Great 4G pitch glad to be calling it home this season
