Parkour Generations London: Opinions

Fantastic experience: This is a little long overdue! I have been training with PKGen since 2020, they're a fantastic organisation that has an everpresent community feel. The students that go there are all incredibly supportive and welcoming, I'd say they're a credit to the teaching and overall ethos of the gym. I've been training with them before they moved to their new venue at Republic. The gym floorplan has changed a fair bit but the love of movement has not. If anything they have a larger variety of coaches and classes. I'm not a big fan of training at a regular gym, but I love my sessions with PKGen it all feels like play even though I'm improving in many ways. The coaches are patient and experienced. I always feel safe in their hands and trust them to push my "limits" or mental barriers. I've had so much fun over the last few years training here, I would thouroughly recommend it. Parkour is for anybody. Even if you're new to parkour and have concerns about starting, this is the best place to do it!

Negative experience: Can I put a negative review? We prepaid a private parkour session with Mateusz through Parkour Generations for a family session while visiting London. We had booked our afternoon, paid to meet him at the location of his choice. Not only was he he not there, he was in Barcelona!! Refused to give me a phone number of anyone that could try and find a solution while we where there. Refused to ask anyone from management to contact me. Not even an apology! The management did contact me but over an hour and a half after our scheduled appointment. They offered what they could to try and make up for it but our kids were so sad as that was the only time we could make it.

Hi Pauline, we’re very sorry to hear of your experience. Your booking was in but Mateusz seemingly forgot it clashed with his holiday. That’s inexcusable, of course. We will be in contact with you directly, and of course provide a full refund and a free session when you are next in London. Again, our sincere apologies for the mix-up.

Hi Seligman, thanks for your feedback. We take this kind of thing very seriously. We don’t have a record of you in any classes, so we can’t identify where you experienced this? Also, we haven’t had any injuries in classes for a long time so we aren’t sure exactly what you are referring to. Could you let us know in which class this occurred and we’ll be sure to follow up to find out more, and will then be in touch!

Fantastic experience: An absolute amazing experience. We're from Canada and visited London for a few days. On my 11 years old son's bucket list was to spend a few hours at a parkour school in London UK. We contacted the school and asked for a private lesson on a Sunday...due to our limited time . They promptly replied and accommodate us in such a short notice. Matt the instructor was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for making this experience one that my son will ALWAYS remember

Positive experience: Great facillity, atmosphere, and culture, but admin/management needs work. I want to start out by saying that I could not be more pleased with the facilities and services offered. I really get a sense that the people here embody the real parkour philosophy. Throughout everything that Parkour Generations does they are showing, teaching, and encouraging not just the physical practices but the mental and cultural elements behind it as well. These people know the true meaning of parkour, and this is a pleasant contrast compared to all the people and organisations today who are more focused on performing "cool" tricks and miss what parkour is really about. The coaches are experienced and inspiring and I would think very carefully about going anywhere else to learn. The world needs more people and organisations like this and I hope that Parkour Generations can continue to share and spread their passion for human movement. So I am disappointed by the repeatedly sub-par experience that I have had from an administration and management perspective. On my first visit to the gym, the opening times listed on the website were incorrect (they have subsequently been corrected) which was disappointing as I had travelled for a few hours to arrive in good time and had to wait 45 minutes before I could go in. I had also been informed that I would be allowed to train shirtless but when I arrived there was a private hire using the gym and I was asked to put a shirt on, and I did not have a particularly suitable shirt with me. On another occasion a class that I had booked for was cancelled to make room for an event. I was not notified that it had been cancelled and the class was still listed on the website even after the event had been announced so I assumed that it was still going ahead. I have also found that enquiries on the telephone or on Twitter tend to receive generic responses which makes it frustrating to determine the suitability of a particular class based on your own skill level and what you hope to learn (they say that most of their classes and events are suitable for beginners but this is unhelpful when you're trying to determine how much you'll be able to benefit on an individual level). The promotion of events also tends to be rather hyped-up and misleading rather than objective and informative, and when I am planning a trip I generally do not feel confident that it will be worthwhile or that my money will be well spent. So if you live locally and you have the money to spare for regular classes or a membership or whatever then I would 100% recommend it, and I feel like this is really who their offerings are aimed at. But it's hard to recommend planning a long trip to visit the gym or attend a single class or event when most of my trips and interactions have resulted in frustration or disappointment due to bad administration or promotion. I really want to see this improve though, as everything else about the organisation and what they're doing is great and it's unfortunate that the administration feels careless and lacking attention compared to the quality of everything else. EDIT: As Parkour Generations have now replied to my review, I feel that I must point out that my first visit to the gym was in 2019. I must also stress that none of the issues that I have highlighted have any relation to the impact that lockdowns have had on planning. The cancellation that I am referring to was in Summer 2020 and this was simple negligence in ensuring that the information on the timetable was updated promptly. The mis-advertising also has no relation to lockdowns, and the enquiries to which I am referring were not at a time or in relation to anything surrounding lockdowns either. The issues that I am highlighting go beyond that and I feel that this is a weak excuse for an issue that has continued through times of greater stability and in areas of administration not affected by lockdowns. This is the kind of generic response that I am talking about, where my points have not been properly understood and addressed.

[Updated 11/06] Hello Michael, really sorry for the misunderstanding, I'd like to speak to you further about this if you are willing and see if we can compensate you. Please email me on [email protected]. Again, my apologies, Jo. Hi Michael! Thanks for the feedback, really useful. We’ve had a lot of challenges these past 15 months due to the lockdowns etc, which has made admin and planning incredibly difficult - but our team are committed to excellence across the board and have adapted well, so we are confident these minor issues are behind us!

Hi Polo! Thanks for the feedback, we do try to keep things as accessible as possible. Most decent London training facilities/boxes have Open Gym at around £25/hour - so we think we're pretty reasonable on that front! Open Gym is completely free to our Members, as well, meaning they can train as much as they want outside of class times. We hope to see you again sometime, and thanks for letting us know your thoughts!

Negative experience: My son and his friend, both of whom are 7 years old went to some weekend junior classes. Unfortunately we won’t be returning because they felt underwhelmed by the experience. The biggest issue that I had was the large number of children in each class and not enough adult supervision. After one lesson the whole class were lectured over their behaviour. The main instructor told them that for 80% of the class they were misbehaving and for only 20% of the class they practised parkour. Bear in mind the kids were aged 6-10, the main focus should be on disciplined fun. There should be a cap of 6 kids to one instructor... and then perhaps with more focussed instruction they would be better behaved! The facility is top-notch, and adults will get a lot out of it, but for kids I’m not so sure

Parkour Generations London
Parkour Generations London

Hi GS, Thank you for the feedback, and we’re sorry to hear you didn’t have the top notch experience that the vast majority of our students have. We follow the UK guidelines for instructor ratio which is 1:15 - though typically we maintain a 1:10 ratio, for higher quality instruction. The classes are very full and on occasion the instructors feel it’s important to discuss the group behaviour and set standards with the students - this is a rare occurrence but it helps maintain the smooth flow of the classes throughout the year. Though we understand if you happened to be there for your first session it might appear that way! We do hope you’ll come back and give the training another shot, and thank you for taking the time to leave some feedback

Negative experience: *Awful experience, serious safety concerns - do not take younger children here* A couple of friends and I decided to take our three children here on 08/11 and had a terrible time. The staff were very keen to get us to sign a safety waiver and no wonder. The safety briefing only took place once we had completed the waiver and paid. The member of staff told our children, aged 8 and 9, that "they were responsible for their own safety and that was not anyone else's responsibility" and that other adult users could "literally land on their heads". I do not think it is acceptable to ask children of this age to take responsibility for their own safety even if it is an unsupervised session. He also told us to sit upstairs in the viewing area as we had a younger child with us who was too young to take part. This meant we had to supervise from a distance and were not even close enough to our children to supervise them directly. The staff member told the children not to use crash mats as "most accidents he had observed resulting from using crash mats" - this in a facility where he took pains to emphasise everything - the floor and equipment - are very hard and where several adults were vaulting and caterpaulting themselves around the venue with absolutely no regard for the safety of our children. The children took a great deal of time and effort to put together an obstacle course for themselves only to have the adults come over and take over effectively pushing the children out. As paying customers, our children had as much right to be there and use the equipment as the adults who completely disregarded the children except to tell them to go away. There were other safety concerns - the top step of the stairs leading to the viewing area is very narrow and if you have children going up there, it's an accident waiting to happen. The beams in the upstairs area are exactly head height so it would be very easy for someone to walk into them and I'm an average 5ft 3. There are no toilets, you have to go to outdoor portaloo type toilets a few minutes' walk away - not ideal with children either. I messaged Parkour Generations to complain and ask for a refund via their "contact us" page on their website and give them an opportunity to address my concerns. I received an automated "thank you for your message we will be in touch soon" type email reply, but have heard nothing in all since and it has been over two weeks. All in all, I would recommend you DO NOT go here with your children.

Parkour Generations London
Parkour Generations London

Hi there, Thank you for your feedback and we’re very sorry to hear you had such an experience. We have hundreds of young people training in the Academy every week very happily and without any issues, so it’s of great concern to us to hear of any bad experiences - no matter how rare they are. We haven’t received your email, otherwise you would have been responded to immediately, so we can only assume it went astray somehow. Can you please send the message again to [email protected] and we will be happy to address the matter with you! With regards to the toilets issue - the Wharf toilets are provided for the use of all businesses on the Wharf, that’s beyond our control, but they are precisely 45 metres from the gym, which is about a 10 second walk. We would love to have toilets inside the gym but this would then eat into the training space, and our Members prefer to keep the space for their practice and make the ten second walk to the toilets. We apologise if that seems too far. The headheight bars in the upstairs zone that you mention are part of a listed building, so we are unable to remove them by law unfortunately. That’s why they are wrapped in thick foam, so that no one can harm themselves even if they do walk into them. We’ve never had an issue with anyone being injured on the foam-covered bars, but we do agree that it would be wonderful to remove them entirely - but that’s out of our hands we’re afraid! We certainly don’t encourage any of our customers to infringe on the enjoyment of others, and if our staff see this happening we will of course prevent it. We would very much like to have this kind of thing reported so we can address it there and then, as our adult customers should treat younger members with as much respect as anyone else - and almost always do, of course. We are very sorry that you came away feeling this way, and we’d be very happy to make it up to you. However, we are confident our safety measures our extremely effective due to having run classes for children for over 15 years in London and with one of the lowest injury rates of any sporting venue in the country. Trampoline centres average around 100 injuries a week; in contrast we average around 1 every 3 months, and even those are generally very minor. Do let us know if we can help in any way, and we hope you’ll give us another shot!

Fantastic experience: 100% Recommended!!! It’s been a long time since I’ve entered an exercise or training facility and have been SO impressed with the quality and standards across the board. I come from a lifetime of varied physical disciplines so I’ve experienced many places. The first thing to hit me was the welcoming nature of everyone and the complete lack of ego. This is huge! It creates an environment where you feel free to share, express be creative, learn and try. Which leads me to the next point. Competent staff and coaches. Passionate and well trained in their own abilities and to bring out the best in others. As it’s well known, being able to do something well doesn’t mean you have the ability or qualities required to teach that thing. With every person here you feel safe and know that you are receiving high level information and attention. With the range of activities, classes and workshops here, there is something for everyone... almost literally everyone, no matter age or ability. And that’s what is also great is that you are learning useful movements in a fun and enjoyable way, in a great environment with talented helpful coaches. Things that transfer into daily life to help you become more able bodied and active - Which has great cross over effects with mental health etc, a real hot topic at the moment. I could write a book on the positives of this place. What I would say instead is give it a go!

Fantastic experience: I started here in Oct 2018 for only 2,5 months frequently. After taking 3 classes per week for 2,5 months I gathered a vitality experience like never before in my life. The working team in this institution is very professional and very human. No bullies, no problems. A very powerful hub to improve personal physical health and to bring the own body to the next level. I would re-visit this place with every chance and can hardly suggest all work-outs. Very consumer friendly with powerful effects! Thumbs up - 5 stars. Important thing to know: They have no showers - but civil guest toilettes are available 40m next to it. I suggest everybody to try at least this place out for 1 month to see how the routine impacts on personal life. This place is a pearl in London.

Hi Everton! Thanks for your feedback, and we'd love to know specifically what makes it unaffordable? At just £10 for an entire day's Open Gym, and only £20 for a two-hour movement class, we know it's incredibly well priced compared to most similar training options in London. Parkour Generations London

Hi Emily! Firstly, thanks for leaving feedback and obviously we take this kind of this very seriously. Our typical member experience is incredibly good so I’m surprised you’ve had such a bad experience that you’d leave a one star review - I’m very keen to get some more details from you so we can investigate why your experience was so bad and how we can make sure it isn’t repeated. We have specific processes in place to review performance and ensure all future customers receive be very best experience. If you have the time I’d love to be able to speak to you about this. If you could contact us we’ll do our best to right the wrong, starting with a 100% refund on your class. Our Open Gym is £10 for an entire day, which we think is pretty great for London! And our Memberships grant access to every class for just £99 a month, whereas most boutique gyms in London offer perhaps 1-2 classes a week for that. Again, we think it’s pretty good value. Lastly, we can't find you in our online systems which all customers are registered into before they join any class: and with all the fake reviews going around Google at the moment, it would be really useful if you could contact us to let us know exactly which class you attended on what date, and exactly who you spoke to, so we can confirm you do exist! Many thanks.

Fantastic experience: The classes offered at The Chainstore are excellent for a serious and practical workout. I generally keep fit with gym and running etc. but after taking a class I am sore for days showing how intense and deep the workout is. Not only do you learn practical skills of balance and physical confidence through staged increased difficulty but it is a great complement to other physical exercise building core strength and stamina. The teachers are all very competent and helpful pushing you hard while finding exercises within your ability. I recommend this to anyone wanting a good all-around workout. Prepare to be pushed physically and beyond your comfort zone with jumps and exercises you didn’t know you could do. Yes, it’s far to get to, it’s very basic without showers and only basic changing facilities but I never regret going.

Negative experience: Awful, truly terrible place. I train very regularly and because I looked pretty fit, I was automatically put into a harder group on day one. I knew nothing, but was expected to do some complicated stuff. The coach kept pushing me into things I felt uncomfortable doing and didn't know how to give me easier versions. I ended up falling and I fractured my wrist. All I was given was an ice pack and go on my merry way. I then had to stop my other training because of it. Besides that: - The gym is freezing cold. - There are no showers - Toilets are across the road?!? - It's in the middle on no-where, along a dark road. 15 MINUTES from any tube! - The equipment was loose, and came apart TWICE in the class. - The coach was really bad. Huge ego, didn't know how to coach at all. - There were only a handful of people in the class, like 4... in a huge room. Really depressing. All in all, this is not a great place to learn parkour.

If you could contact us we’ll do our best to right the wrong, starting with a 100% refund on your class. Lastly, we can't find you in our online systems which all customers are registered into before they join any class: and with all the fake reviews going around Google at the moment, it would be really useful if you could contact us to let us know exactly which class you attended on what date so we can confirm you do exist! Many thanks.

Negative experience: After reading Web site that clearly states you can just walk in pay and start freerunning I am furious that on my sons birthday after travelling for 3Hours to get there. I was met by an incompetent a hole whom was as useful as a chocolate tea pot. At reception desk I was told we can't just pay and play we have to book a class on line and as I was trying to resolve our dilemma mid way through conversation the dh just walked off with no direction of help. I could go on for hours but this company just isn't worth any more of my time To sum it up I'd rather of been stuck on the m25, for two days

Hi Samuel - thanks for the feedback. I’d love to know exactly when this happened as I very much doubt that was the experience you were met with. The open gym times are clearly stated on the website and are always active, unless a special event is taking place, in which case advance notice is always given on our social media channels and website. Also, no matter your experience, referring to other human beings (whom, again, I highly doubt acted that way as all of our staff are very good people) as ‘a holes’ simply reflects on you. Give me exact dates, times and a description of who you spoke to and I’ll look into it. If there’s any validity to your claims we will of course address them, but I have to say I very much doubt it is as you say! If you came during class times (6-10pm) then no you would not be allowed in - as stated on the website. Please do feel free to get in touch directly. Best regards Dan

Fantastic experience: For the past 6 weeks I have been attending a beginner's course with Parkour Generations. I can not describe how different I feel having completed it. There has been a trickle effect into all my other training, I feel more motivated, focused and ready to take on any challenges presented to me. I want to say a huge thank you to all the instructors and students for being such an inspirational group to train with.

Positive experience: Great fun but my son broke his arm (2 bones) there 5 weeks ago. He really loved it but sadly there is a risk of injury.

Parkour Generations London

Sorry to hear that Anthony! There’s risk in everything, of course, and things like this are exceedingly rare in parkour. We’ve taught hundreds of thousands of people across the world over 13 years now and 99% of them never suffer any serious injuries like this. But anything can happen! Far more injuries in rugby, football and horse riding of course! We do everything we can to help young people develop safe practice habits but, as the Japanese would say, even a monkey falls from the tree sometimes! We hope he’s healed up fast and we’d love to see him and you again sometime. Welcome anytime!
