Our comment from FitFit UK about Sport Central:
Sport Central, located in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a versatile sports facility known for its excellent amenities and friendly staff. Users have expressed their pride in hosting significant events such as graduations, noting it as a perfect venue for both celebrations and sports activities.
Some standout features include:
- Spacious Facilities: The sports hall is described as massive and well-maintained, accommodating large events and competitions comfortably.
- Proximity to City Centre: Easily accessible for both locals and visitors, the center benefits from a convenient location.
- Wide Range of Activities: From swimming lessons to volleyball and cheerleading competitions, there are numerous sports opportunities available.
- Well-Maintained Equipment: The gym facilities and swimming areas are consistently praised for being clean and well-organized.
- Friendly Staff: Many users have highlighted the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff, particularly in reception.
However, some users have reported difficulties, such as:
- Limited parking availability, leading to frustrating searches for a spot.
- Occasional rude behavior from staff, impacting user experience negatively.
- A requirement for booking time slots that some feel restricts their training effectiveness, leading to rushed sessions.
- Higher prices for non-members may discourage some from fully utilizing the facilities.
Despite these challenges, Sport Central remains a popular venue for sports and events, with many praising its overall quality and the variety of activities offered.
Sport Central: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Sons graduation, great day, very proud parents.
Fantastic experience: Good ground for sports
Positive experience: Nice facility in the city centre! Good service! Costlier for non-members.
Fantastic experience: Great venue for what we went for
Fantastic experience: Great facility
Negative experience: Very rude staff very rude management. I will definitely cancel my membership.
Fantastic experience: Presentation to cubs and scouts for the boys
Positive experience: The swimming pool has less space for walking on the water. The pool had a sauna and steam room but it didn't have hot and cold jacuzzi.
Fantastic experience: Went here for first timeme in June for grandaughters cheerleading competition ,the hall was massive with loads of seats, very clean throughout, great to get to if on foot, but omg we were riding around different car parks looking for a space absolutely horrific to find a parking space around by this sports centre, otherwise lovely venue and lovely staff x
Fantastic experience: Coming here almost every week. Lovely place to socialise and exercise, friendly staffs, wide range sports, affordable price, close to city centre. Lots pluses.
Negative experience: Good luck trying to remember the timetable for the swimming pool open times…
Negative experience: Horrible! Absolutely horrible! The lockers don’t work, the swimming pool is closed for a month, the one that also is broken and only has a depth of 2 m . Do not buy a membership here. Not worth it!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and lovely and clean.
Positive experience: Great facility for sport from elite to participation levels.
Negative experience: I tried contacting Sport Central to ask if they have excercises available for someone with ME/Fibromyalgia and was ignored. It's very sad how they only seem interested in catering to able bodied students.
Fantastic experience: It's a nice place in the centre where everyone can easily reach and where they can have fun doing sports with their friends. We are playing volleyball every Friday! ...
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities and excellent staff. Louis, who was on reception on the day I registered, has been an absolute star and is a great client-centred ambassador for Sport Central. A real asset to the team. Thanks everyone at SC.
Positive experience: I can't comment on it as a sports venue so my comments risk being largely irrelevant in that regard. Our daughter's graduation took place here and it was obvious that no effort had been spared in preparation for the day. A large, versatile venue.
Fantastic experience: Lovely clean pool and helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Went for an Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tournament here, really good venue for it generally
Negative experience: Very very nice
Positive experience: Visited as part of the University open day. Looked like a great facility.
Fantastic experience: Good service, friendly staffs, all the latest equipments and very well maintained
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities couldnt be more satisfied
Negative experience: Facilities are good (if you can use them). Was kicked out of pool area as a paying student nearly (£10,000 a year) and a paying member. Was told “sorry we’ve rented the space out to kids”. Apparently you can only use the pool area for less than half the day and in chunks of an hour or so. If your lectures don’t happen to fall on those times, then simply wait around for hours to use or go home, I’ll do the latter and won’t be returning. Far to much effort to memorise a timetable and faff around, all because the university wants even more money renting out to local schools. Uni fees are already a scam, then you still have to pay to use the gym and then be told, sorry can’t use facilities, bore off.
Fantastic experience: Used the badminton court. Four courts side to side. Very spacious.
Fantastic experience: Nice
Negative experience: No parking available!!
Positive experience: The gym here is really good, it has many machines and lifting area is clean and organised but the last month was annoyingly busy with the new students joining the gym. Otherwise, it’s all great.
Positive experience: Visit for information about Northumbria university
Fantastic experience: Very good
Positive experience: Very very fascinating place for sports and fitness exercises.
Fantastic experience: Grandson's graduation. Nice university
Fantastic experience: Lovely place!!!
Fantastic experience: Great day at the daughters graduation
Fantastic experience: We had a graduation in here . It housed loads of people and was still very roomy.
Fantastic experience: Грандиозна церемония.
Fantastic experience:
Positive experience: We held a consultation event here, which went really well for those that attended. Unfortunately out-of-date signage across the car parks meant multiple guests were unable to park, with some missing the event. The sports hall itself was decent enough, though unlike other areas of the building lacked air conditioning on a hot day. Thanks for hosting us, and the grassroots game!
Negative experience: A poor venue for a conference. Over the top security so massive queues to get in. Not enough chairs for one main session. Limited facilities for refreshments. At busy times barely enough toilets. One event took place in a bar / restaurant, unsuitable due to many large pillars - it was difficult to see all the speakers!
Negative experience: I have been playing futsal there for a couple of years the facilities are fine but the customer service is full of people with no morals and you feel you talk to robots! and you don't get any refund if you want to cancel your booking even a week before.
Negative experience: gym is way too small with not enough equipment, its always packed all day so you never have a chance to get a good workout in if you don't have a few hours to spare. better of going elsewhere imo
Fantastic experience: Great place to swim
Fantastic experience: Lovely courts for games
Negative experience: Bad place to park when visiting with a coach
Fantastic experience: Best place to forget everything and charge yourself....
Fantastic experience: Love this place.
Fantastic experience: Great sports venue.
Fantastic experience: Easy to find and expansive space inside
Negative experience: The staff operating at your reception of the sports central are either not trained or have no idea what is located on campus. I had a basketball court booked with my friend. I asked if I parked the car in the right area, the young man advised me to move my vehicle because it was for visitors only. I asked him where can I park because I have a booking for 19.00 and he said he doesn't know. I asked if there is any parking at the sports central I can use, he didn't know that either. 20 minutes later, after driving around the city centre to find a spot I just gave up.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: A gem spot to sweat and exercise in the middle of Newcastle City Centre! Just 10-15 mins walk from northumberland street (high street). Booking is online with discounts for alumni and students of northumbria (5.5/hr) Non member can also book 7.5/hr
Positive experience: Big and very clean place.
Fantastic experience: Been a member for years. Best gym in the city!
Fantastic experience: I SWIM THERE 3 or4 DAYS A WEEK ITS BRILLIANT
Fantastic experience: Great pool, friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Swim, sauna and steam room during the summers are the best.
Positive experience: Our daughters graduation ceremony was held here. Well organised.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities a pleasant experience
Positive experience: Invited for a graduation. Nice hall arrangement for more capacity.
Fantastic experience: Great uni facility
Fantastic experience: Excellent event center. Loads of parking available, not free though.
Positive experience: Excellent place to visit.
Fantastic experience: Great space for events, clean and airy with good facilities and disabled access
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place for your sports activities. Excellent state of the art facilities. A 21st century gym and a great environment for the mind.
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Fabulous facility run by great staff. Very impressed!
Fantastic experience: Very well organised
Fantastic experience: Good facilities.
Positive experience: If you are a student in Newcastle regardless of your University, do visit this place. Have a session booked beforehand from the website. The Gym is consisting of just one floor but has good amount of equipment and space, also there is a 'swimming pool', which will require you to buy proper attire before you just jump into it. You can play Basketball, Volleyball and my personal favourite Badminton . The courts are MASSIVE and you get to meet new people while playing, which is a bonus. Baseline - If you like to play sports, do check it out.
Fantastic experience: I've checked out various gyms across north east however this by far has the best reception staff. Lauren was happy to explain all the price points and very knowledgeable in what the season is like for the gym. Great staff and a lot of features for the price.
Negative experience: The worst gym I've experienced overall. You feel like they wanna use every inch of tge space only to make money on the expens of the customer's satisfaction, small gym, the pool's timetable is very limited, if you wanna drink water in the gym you have to wait in the cue to fill a 350ml bottle, and the worst thing is that if you forgot your access card you have to pay £3 for one entry.
Positive experience: Aside from absurd opening hours for the pool as they profiteer off school kids' lessons and extremely busy gym in the evening, good facilities
Positive experience: Everything was clean, staff were efficient just slightly unclear with signage to the event but otherwise great venue for the Thai Boxing show
Positive experience: A great facility for sporting activities for young and old Car park a bit of a nightmare
Fantastic experience: Great courts that are hybrid and are transformed depending on the sport. There were even convocations held here. Good indoor facilities that are well maintained. Do check availability because sometimes they close for events, holidays etc
Positive experience: Clean and friendly staff, cannot comment on leisure facilities as I was there for a graduation ceremony.
Fantastic experience: Great venue with great facilities. Was only there for a few hours for work Training session but was very impressed with overall layout and the facilities offered.
Fantastic experience: Graduation ceremony. The ceremony was well organised by the organising committee and its indeed a proud moment for families, friends and graduands. There is a paid parking in the Sport Central, and bus stop nearby, there shops around the Central and Newcastle City centre is a minute walk from the Sport Central. They also have a digital commons for student only.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic sports venue, 2nd attending Northern Qualifiers for teamgym here & its top notch
Negative experience: Closing time too early.
Fantastic experience: Friendly people
Thanks, that’s great to hear
Fantastic experience: Full recommend for any sport activities
Brilliant, great to hear
Fantastic experience: Allows their Alumni and local people to use their sports facilities and sports classes. This deserves immense commendation and praise on their part as the other university in Newcastle does not allow this.
Positive experience: Clean sports hall with many activities to do. The prices could be cheaper for students.
Thanks for your feedback
Fantastic experience: كويس
Fantastic experience: Great swimming classes for kids, good facilities and helpful staff!
Great to hear. Thanks for your feedback
Fantastic experience: Always clean and tidy, staff are super friendly and always go out of their way to help.
Great to hear, thanks for your feedback
Fantastic experience: Impressive centre in a great location
Thank you for your feedback
Positive experience: Sports centre run by Northumbria Uni, Uni of the Year 2022. Good classes, decent equipment, clean and safe. Good vfm, well used by students and general public.
Fantastic experience: Very convenient and clean swimming facilities, take my sister for classes!
Positive experience: Again when the premises are closed no information about why it has closed is posted on the front door for the public to read. I've reported this to them and the university in the past and was told 'We try to give as much notice to our customers for any upcoming closures by placing signs throughout the building.' I've tried to point out that the public would need access to the closed building to read these notices that are posted throughout! I don't think they realise what they're saying. When the building closes they need to post a notice/sign on the front door - facing the public - not hidden away - as that way the public can read it clearly and understands why the building has closed and when it is to be re-opened.
Negative experience: Terrible place. The staff are not that friendly. The membership costs £150. For pandemic reasons, you use the services for only one month. They only give you back £16. They apologise, but they do not do anything to amend you, even though you have contacted them a lot of times.
Positive experience: Really nice clean pool with friendly staff but you only book hour slots. You aren't allowed into the changing room til the hour starts so changing time is included in this. On going in I discovered you need to buy one of their special tokens for the lockers which I wasn't told beforehand (with only an hour I didn't want to waste time going back out to reception so I just risked it). You then get kicked out at 5 to and it feels very rushed when showing etc. You don't get the full hour.
Fantastic experience: Recently visited for pay-as-you-go swim session. Excellent value at £3 for alumni members for a 60 min session. This includes your changing time so come with your swimsuit on under clothes and shower properly at home to maximise pool time. Plenty of space in the pool with max 25 swimmers per session and 3 double lanes open. Lane speeds and directions are clearly signposted on the digital board at the bottom of the pool. I felt very comfortable as a beginner swimmer as people of all ages and abilities were at the session. The pool and facilities were clean and spacious. Would recommend to anyone. Parking is free at College Street before 8am which is ideal for the 7am session.
Fantastic experience: My kids go to swimming lessons there and it's lovely
Fantastic experience: The cheapest gym for students
Fantastic experience: Love it
Negative experience: The gym is really nice and possess great equipment but the nowadays covid policy ruins everything. You only have one hour to train and it’s clearly not enough. I’m in sport major and I can tell you that a proper warm up with cardiovascular activation, articulation mobility and muscle activation must of at least 20 minutes (it can goes to 30 minutes for a complex warm up). And I can’t even count some stretching after your training. It means that after you warm up you only have 30 minutes left and that’s a shame because you can’t do something a lot and enjoy your training well. You can see that everyone didn’t finish their session and that everyone stop in a hurry to go out and let the staff clean. I was shocked about it. The problem with these one hour slot, is that it pushes you to warm up badly and train in a hurry and that is really dangerous on the long term because it increases the risk of injury. I don’t know how sport professional could have approved this measure. To conclude shortly, the gym is well equiped but the one hour slot makes the place disappointing and useless and can even lead to a dangerous way of training.
