The Barnstaple Hotel

Negative experience: Where do I start? At 0330, the radiators started knocking so loud that they woke me up. That carried on for about 40 minutes. Then, at 0545, I was woken up again by the noise of metal trolleys and loud laughter. As I looked outside to find out what it was, 2 delivery drivers looked up and gave me the finger!!!! Why would a hotel get the laundry collection to arrive at 0545? I travel to Barnstaple fairly often, and I will definitely not be using this hotel again Avoid unless you want a terrible night's sleep!!!!!..

Fantastic experience: This is great staff go above and beyond, the food and facilities are fantastic. I'd 100% recommend anyone to visit and stay here. Superb!!

Fantastic experience: Attended a function at Barnstaple Hotel. Service was great, nothing was too much trouble. Felt very welcome and relaxed. Food was hot, tasty and timings were excellent. Easy to access the hotel and everyone who was staying at the hotel were very impressed, particularly with breakfast.

Fantastic experience: A beautiful place to live in Devon I visited to attend a wedding, it really was worth staying here. The nice indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, and all kinds of tea and coffee were available...

Positive experience: Rooms were not the best with hygiene. Caterpillars in the bathroom. Bug bites every day. Light right outside the curtains. But staff were amazing. Can't fault the food or drink. And price was great. Location was very good.

Positive experience: I recently visited the Barnstaple Hotel for a wedding and also had the chance to try their carvery, and overall, it was a great experience! The wedding was beautifully organized, and the venue provided a lovely setting with excellent service from the staff, who were attentive and friendly throughout. The carvery was delicious, with a good selection of well-cooked meats and fresh vegetables, perfect for a hearty meal. I haven’t stayed overnight, so I can’t comment on the rooms, but based on my experience with the event and dining, it seems like a well-run hotel. Would definitely recommend for events or a meal!

Positive experience: We often stay at The Barnstaple Hotel and we have been very happy with the rooms, service and food. We stayed in the Bray Suite for 1 night in the August bank holiday. On the website it is advertised that there is a fridge, bath robes and slippers in the Bray Suite, but we did not have any of those which was disappointing. We ate an evening meal in the restaurant and we ordered the special for that evening which was roast chicken, stuffing, seasonal veg and potatoes however for the price that we paid we expected a bit more than 1 small chicken breast, 1 small ball of stuffing and 3 small roast potatoes. It’s the first time we left the hotel feeling disappointed on this occasion.

Fantastic experience: As always the staff are amazing, I highly recommend this hotel for both businesses and pleasure, within easy proximity to town and local beaches, the hotel is clean and food is fresh

Fantastic experience: Really great hotel for us to stay with our 4 year old son. The facilities are great especially the swimming pools. The staff have been really great too and very attentive. Thank you so much to Daz for helping us restart the car when it wouldn't start! The location has been good as we have visited woolacombe beach, Barnstaple town, Bideford and the Cobbaton combat collection during our stay.

Fantastic experience: Very close to town great for business trips

Positive experience: Having stayed here for business many times over the years I chose to visit with the family for a weekend break. I was not disappointed, all the staff were friendly especially the chap in the bar I think his name was "Dean Maxwell" he was friendly and spoke to our young son. Food was lovely. However we passed on breakfast as £22 a head seemed excessive. We used the outdoor pool which is heated and had a lovely swim. The room was nice, very comfortable bed. Bathroom could do with a bit of modernising hence the 4 stars. Lovely view across the pool and central courtyard. We will visit again for sure.

Positive experience: Lovely little hotel, indoor pool, outdoor pool, kids game room, loads of outside seating and 2 bars! Room was spacious and clean, very comfy beds. Breakfast was very good with a choice of buffet or of the menu. We didn't book for dinner and waited a while to be shown to a table with no luck, in future would book! Looking forward to our next stay.

Positive experience: Quite a nice place overall, just in a bit of an industrial area, so views aren't its speciality. Service is really good, and the rooms are roomy, but not too big.

Positive experience: Stayed at the hotel as part of my business trip. Whilst the room was spacious and clean, it was a bit stuffy and hot. There was a portable airconditioning unit - that was very noisy. The window could be opened but not too wide hence not much help there. Breakfast was very good ! I ate at the bar a couple of times - staff were friendly and the food was good.

Positive experience: Looks like a motel on an industrial estate but we had a very good stay. Room and staff excellent. Breakfast at £15 extra per head rather pricey but Burger King next door.

Positive experience: Had Sunday Carvery. Not over impressed with the meat and felt it was quite expensive for a carvery. Also some of our party were overcharged for their drinks (the wrong ones). Chaotic payment system. Would be better to have payment at each table.

Positive experience: Hotel very clean with happy friendly staff Couple of niggles, food was quite expensive it wouldn’t be too bad if the portions were a bit bigger, the roast (18.95) would of been better if they spent another 50p on more veg which would of made it a great size meal, it was like a child’s portion, an hour after my dinner I ordered a Burger King!! Second niggle there were loads of towels but no flannels is this the norm?. Non of these would stop me from staying again.

Fantastic experience: Stayed here for 5 weeks in the last 7 ( We did go home on weekends) for a work assignment. It felt like home. Breakfasts were plentiful. The rooms are comfortable, though personally we preferred the ground floor rooms. Would probably choose to stay here for leisure if we are in the area. Thank you for looking after us.

Fantastic experience: Had a Sunday carvery here with my family and what a treat it was, today's choices were pork, beef, turkey or gammon, and with a fantastic choice of ten vegetables dishes plus all your extras like sausages yorkshire puds and crackling and a variety of sauces and gravy. The dessert table has to be seen to be believed. Barnstaple hotel is part of the Brend group of which we are lucky enough to have several in the South West, pick any one, you can't go wrong in my opinion.

Fantastic experience: For a 3 star Hotel this has great facilities. Heated indoor and outdoor pools and a decent little gym which is well equipped. We stayed last year in one of the larger suite rooms which was great for families - very roomy. This year we stayed in a standard room with sofa bed for the kids which, although small, it ticked the boxes. The breakfasts were much improved from last year. Good quality cooked food and a good range of continental options. Friendly staff too.

Fantastic experience: I'm writing this as a vegan, travelling with 2 non-vegans. This hotel has a separate vegan dinner menu with a couple of starters and many main dishes. The food was very good so we had dinner there every night in the bar (better menu for us than in the restaurant, and an earlier 6pm start. The restaurant doesn't open until 7pm.) The chef made me a lovely vegan biscoff cheesecake a couple of times, so I didn't feel deprived of a decent dessert (better than the usual offering of fruit salad or sorbet!) and they do have vegan ice cream. I would suggest offering some simple desserts like vegan pancakes which are so easy to make. The bar and restaurant are wheelchair friendly. Breakfast was very good too as they make the vegan cooked breakfast fresh in the kitchen to avoid the cross contamination of the public buffet! They have marmite if you ask for it, always a plus for me. So all good on the vegan front! The rooms are great too, and the pools are a bonus (but too hot really, especially the outdoor one heated to 32 degrees in the summer!) Service is excellent with very friendly, approachable and competent staff. This was our second stay and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Fantastic experience: We stayed a few weeks ago at this hotel & we were shocked as to why it’s rated as a 3 star when it should have been at least a 4 star. I admit the rooms were not 100 to the standard as we normally like it but because the customer service & the food was delicious then we could overlook this (& usually I like the hotel to be at a high standard) so it just shows how amazing this hotel is. All staff were so polite & if we are ever in this city again, then we will definitely be booking at this hotel again. We asked if they could cater for halal meat prior to our stay & the receptionist explained she will check with the chef and once checked she confirmed they can cater for us which was great! Thanks to everyone at Barnstaple to making our stay so amazing

Fantastic experience: Absolutely perfect stay for my granddaughters 14th birthday, we are local , live in Barnstaple but such a treat not to have travel and have this hotel on our doorstep to use for birthdays/ just for a getaway for a night's relaxation. Room's spotless, very comfortable bed's and pillows, best I've slept on , service is excellent all round, pool really great , lovely to be able to sit in poolside bar / cafe and watch the kid's swimming with a coffee Breakfast is excellent, plenty of choice, hot and replenished on a regular basis, restaurant staff also gave brilliant service Only gripe ( sure there's a good reason) no menu in the room for room service should you want it , didn't spoil our stay in anyway. All in all , excellent stay, can't find anything to fault.

Positive experience: Went to use the leisure facilities. There was a foul smell around the site and in the gym. Well equipped gym. Small pool, but very few guests using it, this time of year, so ok. (Also larger outdoor pool that is open over the summer.) Very expensive drink vending machine. Plenty of parking.

Darcie and the rest of the team are very attentive and will ensure your day goes smoothly and your guests are looked after. I've photographed many weddings at the hotel and each one has been a pleasure to be a part of. If you're looking for a hassle free wedding venue in Barnstaple then this may be it.

Fantastic experience: We had Sunday roast at the hotel for a baby shower celebration. We were able to reserve a private room for this, which was a very nice touch. We had our own bar which did not lack for service. The food was very nice and reasonably priced, I will be back for sure.

Positive experience: My friend stayed at the hotel, the rooms were okay, nothing special. A bit drafty by the windows. The hotel has modern parts aswell as being stuck in the 1980s. The food was the same with a dated menu. The bar was shut when we went so ate in the restaurant, the difference between bar food and restaurant food is so different in quality. I recommend eating elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: An excellent holiday hotel. Nice rooms, excellent food, very helpful staff. Only downside is location...a longish walk to the town centre and station. Plenty of parking. Close to ten pin bowling and roller skating.

Negative experience: Closer to 2 stars. Not disability friendly at all. Also, if you book a room here and intend to sleep the walls are paper thin - can hear the full conversation of the room next door.

Positive experience: Plenty of parking wonderful staff I mean that they were great and the food absolutely fantastic. I do find all hotels in this area to be good for parking, decor, friendly, service and cost but this was good for me on this trip. I will book again

Positive experience: Had our Christmas party with you, stayed over. Christmas party seems to be a conveyor belt of food not really that enjoyable but the staying over and sleeping was nice and the breakfast, I enjoyed much more. Shame the seagulls interrupted the sleep. Nosey birds. Next time definitely have a swim.

Negative experience: We've been coming to Barnstaple Hotel for years for the carvery and always been impressed by both the carvery and service however, on this visit we were bitterly disappointed. We booked our table for 2:30, when we arrived there was nobody immediately available to seat us. When somebody did realise we were there, we were shown to a table and quickly told that the carvery had been cleared away and that we would have our carvery plated up in the kitchen. Considering we booked for a carvery this was new to us and dissapointing to say the least (had we known it was a plated roast we would have gone elsewhere). The carvery itself was nice, however we weren't offered drinks and had to ask to order them. This isn't the usual service we are used to at the Barnstaple Hotel and have come away somewhat despondent.

Fantastic experience: Everyone from Reception, cleaners ,waiting staff ,chefs so welcoming very helpful .Always no matter how busy or how many different parties are in everyone is treated with consideration and great care .Highly Recommend this hotel suitable for all ages

Positive experience: The outside of the hotel is not great but the interior is modern and pleasant. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff were pleasant and friendly. Don't let the outside fool you.

Fantastic experience: A picture of a carvery will never do it justice so haven't added one. It's rare to find a carvery that is equal to a fresh to order meal. This does so and surpasses. Excellent selection of components all delicious and the service is fantastic.

Fantastic experience: Great food and really nice people , a great little location with heated indoor and outdoor pools . And free ice cream for the kids if you are bringing any. Room service was great with a little sign to hang on the door if you want room service or dont want to be disturbed. 5 stars in my eyes !

Positive experience: I really enjoyed my stay here and so did the kids. They particularly loved the pool. I found the signature family room very cramped but otherwise functional. The food was sometimes amazing, sometimes below the expected standard, but the service was always exemplary. Teagan was particularly professional and friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Positive experience: It was overpriced for the quality. Did very much enjoy a relaxing swim in the pool. If you want vegetarian sausages you need to be prepared to wait, I'd asked in advance but that didn't help, at breakfast was told they were coming gave up waiting had to go. Fine for families but overpriced

Positive experience: The first thing I like to check are the rooms. Wow! 10 /10. Very clean, even with the weather being this hot I could see the maids working so hard cleaning the rooms.. Amazing work. The staff in the bar area are so lovely and helpful. Always a smile. The only thing that annoyed me while trying to chill by the pool is the way the gate slams. Maybe get a new gate as this is very annoying! Otherwise I would have given you 5 stars Oh not forgetting the reception staff also very helpful and friendly xxx

Positive experience: Service and food exceptional. Staff are a credit to the Brend group. It appears that having a great room is a bit hit and miss whilst they undergo renovation work. Our room was one of the recently updated ones and was superb.

Positive experience: Friendly staff, very nice food. Rooms are OK but a little tired and dated. Good water pressure in the shower. Pools are small but enough for a splash about. Sauna was not very hot but that seems to be normal for a hotel.

Fantastic experience: And yet another excellent Brends Hotel and restaurant. My wife and I attended a large family party, a gathering of 70 plus attendees. A disco was laid on and a very well organised buffet for all to enjoy. I could not fault it. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Everything was clean and fresh and we definitely recommend that you visit and experience for your self.

Negative experience: Room overlooked car park and burger king where voices and car noise kept us awake til 1am. Also many seagulls squawking all night. Rooms very comfortable. Outdoor pool full of young children so no chance to swim. Indoor pool has less children. Not a place to come for adult rest. Great if you have young kids.would not return. On main road.

Positive experience: Lovely carvery and fab service. The only thing is the smell of the oyster fishery at the back of the hotel.

Fantastic experience: I haven't stayed at the hotel but enjoyed some great events there, always super food and service. The main function room is always beautifully decorated too.

Positive experience: Would be 5 stars except from one incident where a waiter accidently spilt some drinks on one of us. This isn't what bothered us, it was actually rather funny. What bothered me was a colleague of this person then slating him to another colleague only a few feet away from our table. Accidents happen. He was professional and polite all afternoon, maybe they could take some notes from him instead of blatantly talking about him because he made a small error. Moving on from that however, food was lovely and like mentioned above the service was fantastic.

Fantastic experience: Silver Service Simon Weston event. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. Simon was amazing. The meal was perfect. The staff were polite, friendly and super efficient. All in all a thoroughly memorable experience.

Fantastic experience: Only stopped for a cup of coffee. However we had meals here before and the food is always delicious. The bar area, is clean and comfortable. All facilities are well looked after, as were we, even though it was just a coffee break. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Brand Hotel's are family owned, one would think that the staff are family members through their experience handling their customers with ease. Service is excellent, meals are nicely cooked. Cannot give you a run down of their room's as have not yet had the opportunity to stay there.

Positive experience: This hotel certainly do a grand event! Our visit was a Christmas party event. Food was very good and the NHS tables with staff from various wards were deservedly letting off steam. Would have been a 5 star review but the hotel had a no refund policy and a few from our table who could come due to covid, lost their ticket money even though they informed the organiser days before.

Fantastic experience: Lovely venue, clean, tidy and well presented. Staff pleasant, although the bar always closes too early and breakfast ends too early on Sunday. Convenient location and ample parking, but be prepared for noisy seagulls and a fishy aroma as there is a fish processing plant next door, but overall very good value for the price.

Fantastic experience: Can't really rate the Hotel at the moment but I have anyway, we only arrived bout 15mins ago. Room is nice, ground floor past the indoor swimming pool n our room is outside! The seating area looks good and the Bar too
