Positive experience: Close to York center, historic walls and train station. Comfortable rooms. Huge breakfast but no dairy free yoghurt/milk provided. The lunch provided for meetings was very basic, just sandwiched and fries with a bit of salad.

Fantastic experience: I finally popped into Middletons after being intrigued by the stunning building and setting many times when I’ve been in that part of York. It is enormous and although I only saw a small section of the hotel as I was not staying there it looks to be beautifully maintained. It’s definitely a luxury hotel with a lot of character. There are several different areas from the main reception and bar area, including an outdoor seating area. I explored a little bit of the grounds and only had time for a quick coffee, but it’s certainly somewhere to consider the next time we stay overnight in York.

Fantastic experience: Perfect spot, just 8 mins walk from York centre, 11 mins from the train station. Hotel was beautiful, with rooms being in separate buildings which meant less noise from late night returners or early starters. Complimentary kit kat was a lovely added touch, as was fresh milk in the fridge, replenished each day.

Negative experience: Sadly had 2 terrible nights sleep, windows may well have been open, noise from road and revellers at 3am, worst we've experienced. Good location and staff very friendly but I'd never stay there again purely because of the noise.

Fantastic experience: The wife and I have just had a lovely weekend in York staying here at Middletons. Fantastic place with excellent staff. Our room was spotless and had everything that we needed. The cooked full breakfast was to die for, the best we have ever had. I would highly recommend this hotel, and it's in walking distance of the station ( 10 mins ). Brilliant

Positive experience: We visited Middletons on Friday 11th October to celebrate my mother's 102nd birthday. Prior to the actual day the hotel and in particular the restaurant booking manager has been excellent in all her planning and communications etc. This was what won me over and helped me to decide which hotel in York to choose for this special occasion. We decided to choose both the yorkshire tapas and comfort menu. From which to select our meals from. The tapas was lovely and suited us fine, especially my mum with her small and limited appetite. Two people choose from the comfort menu and were pleased with their choices. Belly pork and fish and chips. My only complaint was regarding the cheese and meat board that we ordered. This was very expensive and the items offered were tiny ie one slice of bread cut in two two slithers of cheese, two types of salami and meats plus a small handful of small not very fresh red grapes. Plus some quince jam which was accompanied by yorkshire relish and a dribble of oil in bowls .very disappointing for £25. Not only expensive for what it was but also unappetising and such a shame when everything else was fine. I feel that it may have been a treat to have had something special for my mum. As the hotel were very aware of her amazing milestone !!
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff and a beautiful hotel. Warm and friendly. Great breakfasts. Thankfully great parking as we had travelled from West Wales. Brilliant location which was perfect for our first York visit. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom shower was hot, roomy and clean. Loved the hotel's history and its keenness to recycle and be environmentally friendly.

Positive experience: Hotel, room and public areas were all very nice and comfortable. All staff pleasant. Bar service good but breakfast was slow to arrive once ordered. Didn't like the sliding bathroom door in our room. Offered virtually no privacy. Most disappointing was that our room was not serviced. Returned around 5.15pm to freshen up and change before going out for the evening. Called down to reception to inform them and told someone would be up directly. I advised we would be out from 6pm so the room would be free. Returned around midnight to find no one had been up. I went back down to the bar and got milk, teabags and biscuits but not impressed, especially as I had let you know at the time. I mentioned this at Check Out and got a muttered in sincere apology. Having said all this, I would stay again.

Positive experience: Nice hotel, clean rooms, polite staff but lacks variety in breakfast
Positive experience: The food service was rather poor, first night was awful The chef was not up to scratch he made the fish and chips like rubber after an hour and a half it appeared then I sent it back and asked to be redone with the chips It took too long, then the room I stayed in shower control temperature was broken off, because first day I was tired next day showed the receptionist taken pictures said to me get it done didn't move me which was annoying, so in the end went for tapas it alot better would use this place again they where kneen on the tourist than the person waiting for their dinner or lunch.

Negative experience: The Pros My Wife & I stayed at the Middleton Hotel in York for one night, whilst visiting the City. The communication between the Hotel and myself prior to my stay was excellent. Upon arriving at the hotel, the staff were very helpful and lovely with us. The room was snug, as the name suggests, but it was fine for one night and had all the amenities we required for the stay. The Cons We received numerous emails from the restaurant side advising us to reserve a table for dinner, and for breakfast. We thought either it’s because the restaurant is excellent and they want to make sure they look after us, given we are staying at the hotel, or it’s a sign of desperation - We didn’t know which it was, but all became clear. We booked Breakfast, and thought we will ask Reception when we check in how busy is the restaurant that night. We were informed there was a group in but that was it. We therefore decided we would go to the restaurant, as the Tapas Menu on the website looked really good when we read it. We turned up at the restaurant and were seated. We have already decided what we wanted to order, and therefore gave our order to the Waitress, and awaited our food. First to come was the Dirty Hasselback potatoes which were nice, and we though this is good. We then received the Char-grilled tender stem broccoli which was cold, so I sent it back and explained it was cold. They did replace the broccoli dish, but it was only luke warm at best when it came back out. We were then told the Chef had said the Mini Yorkshire puddings were not available, we were a little perplexed as it had been 25 ish minutes since we placed the order and were very disappointed at finding this out so far into the meal, as mini Yorkshire Puddings, in York is what they are famous for. We had ordered Yorkshire venison meat balls (at £9.00) and they came out in a little dish, of which there was only 3 or 4 of them, but you might as well served up rubber golf balls. They were disgusting – chewy, tasteless and very unpleasant. I went to find a member of staff, and a Gentleman who seemed to be in charge of the restaurant. I explained that the meatballs were chewy, tasteless and not nice, to which he responded in a very patronising way, to which I had to tell him to stop insulting my intelligence. He went on about never having had a complaint, and it’s just me who seems to have a problem. I explained how the rest of the meal was, to which he snapped back we replaced your broccoli for you and the Customer is not always right you know. That I’m afraid was like a red rag to a bull, I cancelled the rest of the meal, I wasn’t going to endure this any longer. I asked to see the General Manager, to which I was told he wasn’t there, but he can give me his email address, I said yes please….I’m still waiting now. In the end my Wife and I decided as weren’t able to eat much in the Restaurant we would go into York for a proper dinner. Breakfast the next morning, again the website lists what you can have. The menu is very well written on the website, and you think this is going to be great, but the actual food that comes is awful. We expected a nice Breakfast Bar from which to choose what we wanted, but it was a very small selection despite what the website says. My Wife & I both ordered the ham and cheese omelette from the cooked to order menu. Every Chef should be able to cook an omelette, but what they served us was an embarrassment, the egg was overcooked, the omelette was tasteless and the ham was more like spam than ham. Needless to say we left it and went into York to find a proper breakfast. When they are charging £19.95 per person, you expect a decent breakfast and quality food. The Restaurant/Chef really lets the Middleton Hotel in York down, it could be a fantastic place. The Hotel side is great, the restaurant awful, and until someone sorts that out I’m sure I won’t be the only person to raise my concerns.
Fantastic experience: The hotel was delightful and the rooms were very clean, comfortable and well appointed. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be staying there again. The hotel is well located, very close to The Minster and City Walls.

Positive experience: We stayed for a 2 night break. The room itself was big but was let down by the cobwebs on the beams. The bathroom was obviously specialised for disabilities but again cleanliness let it down. The grout in the tiles was orange with black mould and the areas around the leg of the screen were caked in mould so we're the edges we're the wall met the flooring. Was a shame, brilliantly placed, Could have been better.

Positive experience: Heard from a colleague that rooms were amazing, but apparently the ones down the annex which I got allotted were just too small. There was barely enough space in the shower to even bend and wash your legs. The bed was really comfortable though. Breakfast is not a buffet. While able people will have absolutely no problem, those with food restrictions will find this place slightly problematic.

Positive experience: Beautiful hotel in a great location. We stayed in Chocolate - a separate cottage split in two parts. King bed and bunkbeds for the kids. It was gorgeous (though the front window leaked badly in the rainstorm). Breakfast was great. Only the coffee was disappointing.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful boutique hotel in York, on the "other" side of the river. A cluster of small buildings surround a beautiful garden area. Staff are incredibly helpful. Great location! I think we will return.

Fantastic experience: We just spent five nights at Middletons. It was absolutely brilliant. The staff are absolutely fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble. They are professional, polite and personable. The building itself from the decor (to the Musak playing at a comfortable level in the background) wraps itself around you and invites you to relax. 11 out of 10. Fantastic experience: Hotel is very lovely. The staff were friendly. We stayed in Peter Room which was lovely, bright and airy, bed was extremely comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. Lavazza coffee machine was a lovely surprise. Breakfast was very good lots of choice, continental & cooked. Everywhere is very well maintained. We would definitely stay again.

Fantastic experience: The rooms were very clean and cute. Perfect for one person. Small for two. Loved the robes in the room. The walls are a bit thin but for the most part quiet. Location was fabulous. Had one weird moment. At 1:44am during my stay the TV turned on repeatedly even after I shut it off. Could it have been an IT glitch as the front desk said or was it something else

Negative experience: A disappointing response from Middleton’s, actually no response at all! Dear restaurant manager We booked a reservation at your restaurant on Friday 5th July for my birthday, on the back of a ‘good review’ from York on a fork, which appears misleading. However I would like to provide you with the following feedback as our experience was lacking to say the least. I hope that providing you with direct feedback may help you improve the experience for future diners. Thwaites Paradise bread One bread bun (small) doughy probably been frozen and defrosted, chewy. Yorkshire Dama squeaky cheese Just not very nice didn’t seem fresh Sun dried tomato arancini Tasteless crispy, maybe try the Italian in the shambles market they’re aranchini is lovely and a similar price. Mini Yorkshire puddings Undercooked Yorkshire pudding, generally underwhelming Parsley and mustard marinated onglet steak Probably best of a bad bunch! Crispy monkfish cheeks Chewy over cooked dry Dirty Hasselback potatoes (v) Slightly undercooked potatoes, cheese was awful, and charging a £1 for a few pieces of chopped bacon was disgraceful! In hope that the following feedback can improve future customer experience. However the service provided by your staff was very good. Kind regards
Positive experience: The location was great, right where we wanted to be. However, the room itself was a let down, I paid for 2 nights in the executive double room. The bathroom tiles were mouldy, and the carpet was soiled by those who had been inside before us, doors and walls were chipping away. Woken by the plumbing/water going off on the floor above, followed by the traffic noise as well. The kettle was filthy, as was the light switch for the bathroom, taps on bath had limescale, and one was damaged, as was the radiator with open wires. Light had no working bulb. Paintwork throughout the room was chipped. The flooring in the bathroom was very slippy and dangerous when coming out of the bath, it was also worse for wear as the grout was worn away, leaving gaps throughout. For the price I paid, I was upset. When raising my concerns with staff at reception, I was told that they would let the maintenance team know. No apologies were given.
Negative experience: We reserved two rooms for two nights for our family holiday. My parents - coming from Germany - were looking forward to a nice hotel and exploring York. We based our decision to reserve at Middletons on our lovely experiences at other Thwaites hotels/inns, e.g. The Listers in Malham. We love the history of the Inns with the updated rooms and modern bathrooms. We were looking forward to another good experience after we saw the photos of the lovely rooms. Unfortunately the rooms we got were nothing like on the photos. The building had a strong paint smell (some google reviewers called it "toilet smell"), chipped doors and dirty carpets. The rooms had "granny-like" decor and furniture and the bathrooms were not updated as shown in the hotel website photos. When we tried to get different rooms, we were told there was nothing else available and they would try to put us in the updated rooms the next day. This didn't happen. The manager who knew about this issue, didn't seem to care. We had a glance at the updated rooms when they were cleaned and it was like day and night. One would have thought our old rooms were less expensive than the updated rooms but this was not the case. We were just unlucky and that put a damper on our family holiday. The staff at breakfast was slow and clumsy, often checking their mobile phones instead of asking if anything else was needed. Waited 25min for porridge. Middletons is just not up to par with our other Thwaites experiences. It would have been nice to get an apology or offering of any kind from the manager but I guess he doesn't need the business. My husband and I travel all over the world and can definitely say that this is not a 4 star hotel.
Fantastic experience: Visited Calma beauty, located within Middleton's Hotel, Marta the therapist is amazing, makes you feel like a princess when you leave. All treatments are fabulous and a really good price

Fantastic experience: This hotel is an absolute gem!!! The room was stunning, service and staff were fab!! We didn't eat but the menu looked fab, especially the Yorkshire tapas!!! The alcohol was very reasonably priced for a hotel and city centre. However, whilst the cappuccino was lovely, £4.95 from a machine is really steep for what it was!!! We will definitely be back, but I'll pass on the coffee next time

Fantastic experience: Fantastic hotel, in a prime location, 5 min walk and you are in the city. We have stayed here twice now and wouldn't stay anywhere else. The staff are all polite and helpful, the rooms are clean and full of everything you need even things you don't expect like an iron and ironing board, mini fridge, dressing gowns and nice chunky biscuits. Lovely bar area with outdoor seating and very nice breakfast. We can't wait to return next year!

Fantastic experience: I stayed here for 1 night and it was genuinely one of the best hotel experiences. Firstly, I was working all day and had to travel up from Derby. I rang reception and asked if there was room service and the lovely gent got a sandwich made for me ready for my arrival! The room was fabulous and boutiquey..the pillows were matched for all preferences. I slept like a log. Lovely kind staff, fab rooms, quiet location - I'm only gutted I stayed one night and not more!

Fantastic experience: Visited for afternoon tea. Greeted immediately by staff and, as I was early, they offered me a drink while I was waiting. The food was beautifully presented and allergies catered for with no issue. Very tasty and plenty to eat so we were brought boxes to take home what was left. Service was faultless and the afternoon tea was good value for money. Would definitely return.

Negative experience: Try finding it only one way in the street, all side roads now blocked off. When I found it no parking spaces, work men painting so about 5 vans and a conference going on with around 20 space's. Three spaces railed off some reason. Reception nice young lady only just started can't fault her, then came the older ones, you will have to find a car park go back out turn left then right, ever been to York it's tiny, then bring the car back after five as I have nothing better to do. I went out and found a space a could use in the corner, just a door near it and a couple of paint cans, receptionist followed me out I said I can put it there, so I reversed all the way up the tight drive to find she had stuck a traffic cone there. Ended up driving round York to find a parking space and ended up on the railway car park a mile away. Had to carry two bags and wheel the case all the way back, I am on four naproxen a day for my back at the moment. Got back same receptionist did not give a monkey's, oh there's a car park nearer than that she said. Got to the room it's smaller than our smallest room in the house, worst start to a break that I have Ever experienced, glad we are only here for one night. Just to mention I am never this grumpy. Don't bother with this hotel much better in York, the best part is I only booked this for the parking even though it's limited . Edit I hope it isn't raining in the morning for the one mile trek back to the car, if it's still there.
Dear Tim Hollingsworth, I’m sorry to hear you had trouble finding us, there is often roadworks in York with diversions in place and the team at reception on hand if directions required, the conference you mention were overnight guests, we do advertise limited car parking and as you had arrived several hours early we were full with some guests from the night before due to leave. However, our reception team did try to advise you to park on the street which is £1 for an hour at which point a parking spot would most likely become available. We had scaffolding taken down that day following some roof works and we’re still tidying up rubble from the area that you mention. I can see you booked one of our cosy rooms, we do try to portray as best we can that these rooms are on the smaller side. We do have larger rooms available as an upgrade. Positive experience: Rooms small, facilities in room are no better than a premier inn, in fact premier inn has a bigger room and bathroom. People super friendly but evening dining menu limited and poor and overpriced. £32 for rib eye steak but £23 in city.Breakfast was good. L pillows at the hotel were fantastic and bed was comfy enough. Couldn’t have window open as some kind of generator or something in courtyard humming all night. Perfectly placed to see sights in city of york and hotel was clean .

Fantastic experience: lovelyyy hotel. lots of vintage character, but modern facilities. temp control in the room was great, the shower had two heads (1 normal 1 rainfall), and we had 2 sinks in the bathroom. there was an adorable dressing nook in our room, with a dressing table, a wardrobe, and coffee machine/ mini fridge. robes and slippers were provided, and nothing beats lying in your hotel room in a robe. the bed was incredibly comfy, and so big! the pillows were fluffy and plump and the diver was warm. the room had lots of quirky practical details, like the retro style radio and hair straightening stand. the location was fabulous, literally like a 3 minute walk for the city centre. we didn’t have to drive anywhere the whole week. would definitely recommend staying here

Positive experience: Whilst a wonderful site in both presentation, location and service, the price was a bit exorbitant for what you got. The cozy room was incredibly compact, maybe a little over filled and lacking in simpler utilities such as a toilet brush. Ordering breakfast ad hoc was expensive. I asked just for a double expresso and we were charged £5. I also appreciate that the permanently closed pool and sauna is reflected on the main booking sites, however it'd be great if additional effort could be put into contacting the numerous 3rd party aggregate services that are still showing these as available... was a bit of a disappointment. Overall can't fault the place. Gym and class access was great, the rooms were comfy and well stocked, and most of the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Fantastic experience: A lovely hotel. Great location. Walking distance to everything in York and very close to the walls, but not amongst the hustle and bustle. Parking onsite is great. Clean, fresh and recently renovated rooms with lots of extras like coffee machine with pods, fresh milk and water, lovely cups, take out cups, biscuits, ropes, slippers etc. Would highly recommend and would return if we visit York again.

Fantastic experience: Once again we have enjoyed a fantastic stay at this beautiful hotel. We recieved a complimentary voucher for drinks from the bar , totally unexpected but a really nice touch. Would like to thank Anna (Breakfast room) shown exceptional customer service . There are so many nice little luxuries like the eye masks and lavender spray. Paul you should be extremely proud of your staff. We will be sure to come back when we have(squirreld) enough pennies together. Paul/Chantelle you know what we're talking about (lol).. Room-10/10. Fantastic experience: Everything about Middletons Hotel was perfect.. We stayed for two days.. The room was a good size, the ensuite was lovely, everywhere had a high standard of cleanliness. The bed was really comfortable, the bedding and pillows were good quality! We had a few drinks and a meal there, the service was top quality, and the food was delicious. Middletons is really well located, it is only 5 minutes walk from all the main attractions in York. It really is perfect. From checkin to checkout, we will definitely stay again when we next visit York!

Fantastic experience: Excellent location with some private car parking. Easy walk to the city centre as the hotel is within the city walls yet in a quiet spot outside of the hustle and traffic. Super friendly staff, good food. Huge fitness centre attached which I didn't have time to use but which looked great. Lovely well maintained little gardens in the grounds which are surrounded by the ensemble of buildings which make up the hotel.

Fantastic experience: Great deal on City Break in a well kept suite, stocked mini bar, robes etc. Excellent restaurant staff in the evening and for breakfast. Great food from a varied menu. Perfect location for the old town. Fascinating history of the old buildings that have been tastefully modernised.

Fantastic experience: Lovey stay, on business but would have been equally happy for leisure. Really friendly attentive staff. Room clean, breakfast amazing. The fitness suite had everything. So close to town with good street lighting all tbe way. Worth a stay. They've got non standard rooms and cottagds/villas too. And and food and service is great, do eat here

Fantastic experience: Lovely ambience all around the hotel. Great location - quick, safe walk to the centre, but far enough to avoid the noise of the nightlife. Be wary of parking, as spaces are limited. However, I appreciate that we were able to park ahead of check-in and stay parked past check-out - made us feel like we were wanted there instead of being shoo'd out. Didn't have the opportunity to eat here, but I can confirm that they do a Gluten Free breakfast - very considerate! Entire room was squeaky clean and well put together. Very comfortable bed & pillows, especially since most hotel beds are a bit too soft (they give you a choice of pillow firmness if needed). I loved the extra treats that were left for us (tea, biscuits, etc.). Will definitely be booking here again and making sure we utilise more of the hotel next time we visit York.

Fantastic experience: Stayed two weeks ago with business and was not disappointed, beautiful buildings and public spaces, an outdoor area that must be fantastic in the sunshine and plush rooms with luxury amenities. Fantastic experience: Often pop in here because it’s a nice place to have a drink before going to town especially in summer as it has an outdoor area. Didn’t sleep there so no make for rooms.

Fantastic experience: Great hotel, cosy and comfy rooms with little extras which were appreciated. The hotel is well situated, far enough out to be quiet but just a short walk away from York centre. On site car park a real bonus and if you book direct with hotel parking is free. Communal areas of hotel are smart and stylish and everywhere is clean, staff friendly and professional. Great choice at breakfast, food well presented.

Positive experience: Staff were friendly, maybe a little rushed in the dining room- understandable. Location was great. The room however, had a strong mildew smell that was bad enough to run us out in the morning. The bathroom near the lobby was the same. Not sure if it was a temporary thing with the plumbing as the river was in a flood stage during our stay. Next time we’d probably look elsewhere due to the smell. Said they’d “look into it as we were checking out.” 3/5 only due to the smell and response.

Fantastic experience: It was our first time to York and we absolutely loved visiting and staying at Middletons made our trip. We've booked again for February. My only slight negative is the shower was very small, bit we managed and it didn't detract from our experience. Staff were so friendly and the breakfast was great with a huge selection.
