Services, Machines and Guided Classes
The Fitness Centre • Durham University: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Excellent venue. Large, clean and modern. Lots of parking and friendly staff
Negative experience: Not a necessarily bad gym but lacks some very basic equipment which every gym really should have. Staff have a go at you if you have a bag with you (do they even understand the gym?) and despite it being a university gym they let anyone in, meaning it gets very crowded. Machines are also out of order a lot. If you live closer, go to ultraflex!
Fantastic experience: Lovely place definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area
Fantastic experience: Watched Durham ladies play football very friendly atmosphere
Fantastic experience: Excellent would recommend.
Fantastic experience: Clean gym, friendly staff, lovely vibe. Have been coming here for my whole uni time and I really love it. I went to result fitness for one term but can back here despite it being a lot further from my home because I love it so much.
Negative experience: It'd be alright if you could get on anything
Fantastic experience: Great experience at progress jui jitsu comp today
Fantastic experience: Good track. Great to run around the river next to it with great views of the cathedral. I've not used the fitness suite yet, but I did years ago when I worked at the university and before it was extended.
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Solid gym to get in a workout after work
Fantastic experience: After joining the gym in October 2022 its now a place I look forward to going to 6 days a week, the place is clean, has modern equipment and a positive social atmosphere. The staff all have knowledge in different areas of fitness and are always happy to give advice or just have a chat. The gym does have very busy periods but it's manageable and most people are happy to work in. The staff run a variation of classes from boxersize to pilates which are fun and are as challenging as you make them. Cafe is fairly priced with a great range of hot and cold food and drinks including protien shakes, protien bars and cafe nero coffee. Showers are always clean, have consistent hot water and have good water pressure.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facility.
Fantastic experience: Well set out. Near the city centre.
Positive experience: Class,, all needs that a gym should have
Negative experience: Cheers on keeping students into debt, your courses are a joke and students do not get any assistance, just go to other universities that do sports than this one, the certificates do not get recognised enough and require work experience than being a door opener. 100k to £500k of debt to anyone intrested on intrest rates and how much this uni is, just overpriced gym membership lmao!
Positive experience: Great place, excellent gym to work out at with lots of machines but I have to say that when students get back from holidays, the gym is so full that sometimes you have to wait around or try find other exercises, whereas in the holidays, there are a lot of machines or equipment's available and in the area where people do arms and chests, there's only 4 seats but in general when it gets too busy, almost every machine is full and no where to actually work out, sometimes you have to find room but the arms and chest and legs areas are so full during term time and feels too crowded but a great place to work out if it's not during term time or when students are out for the holidays.
Fantastic experience: I come here for track running... fab place There's park run which starts just outside of the grounds 9am on a Saturday too! Nice loop
Fantastic experience: Top friendlys staff , facilities up to standards Must try after. After The Durham wfc home games , every Sunday
Fantastic experience: Worth joining
Positive experience: Great when its open with no covid
Positive experience: Outside activitys
Fantastic experience: There is a renewed 400m-running track with two long jump sand pits and two shot put stations. The gym on the entrance floor is great, but you only get access if you're a member of a sport club. Next to the changing rooms are even two ice machines with three bath tops. It is a great place to train and recover. The actual small fitness suite is on the second floor.
Fantastic experience: If you is a fit gadgie plenty here to get into
Positive experience: Quite OK. Cafe can become too crowded during term time, and it's difficult to find a place to sit down.
Fantastic experience: Good value for money
Positive experience: Good facility but seen better
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Positive experience: Quite a small gym but very good value for money. Good range of equipment and machines. Outside term time it's usually pretty quiet, especially the morning.
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out and friendly staff
Positive experience: Traditional gym, the showers are great.
Positive experience: Very basic but very affordable. You can pay on a month by month basis so no tie ins. Don't expect the latest machines in a pristine environment - if that what you're after then pay the extra at the other gyms in the city. But, if you're looking for a range of equipment that will do the job at the right price, then this is a great option. The negatives: the lockers are a bit dodgy and the opening times could do with being longer.
Negative experience: So, the actual "gym" area is cramped, really, really stupidly cramped. it's so tiny, that anymore than 8 people in there feels like you're going to suffocate. The machines are too close together and it makes it awkward to walk around and work out. It's also pretty filthy, it has carpeted floors which look discolored and grim. It's equipment is pretty limited too, and no space to do any floor exercises. No singes of a changing room for people who just use the gym area, and the lockers out side are utterly useless.
Negative experience: The complex has decent facilities, but the fitness suite can get busy. It's not full of meat heads like some gyms but it certainly doesn't have a sociable atmosphere. It's cheap and cheerful, but the facilities are due an upgrade. I've never seen the staff cleaning the equipment and few people wipe down after use. The induction was very brief and cleanliness should be emphasised more. The showers are great, hot, clean, and have a decent flow! But the changing rooms can get dirty especially when there are sport events. The venue would benefit from having a couple of full time cleaners, or by asking fitness suite staff to clean equipment regularly. So... Cheap (for Durham) decent gym, but no classes and sometimes slightly unclean!
