Retreat East: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Beautiful location and the Great Barn is stunning. Great lunch and surprising British Chardonnay!!! James was a superb front of the house and we'll be back....
Negative experience: This place is expensive for what you receive. What we liked: the accommodation we booked was beautiful and comfortable. We enjoyed lighting up the wood burner, our dog was so happy there. The staff at dinner time were wonderful. The hot tub was nice, we walked with our dressing gowns from our room. What we didn’t like: when we booked over the phone they said to book everything in situ, there was no need to book in advance, however when we arrived they told us we should’ve booked in advance , we ended up having lunch at 17:00 (earliest slot) The place has complimentary features eg wellies and bikes but it wasn’t told to us at reception. I think the most disappointing aspect of it all is that this place doesn’t have a spa. The showers were all out of service, the steaming room wasn’t steaming and the sauna was lacking the water bucket to adjust temperature. Lastly, breakfast included was underwhelming. A poor selection of options. We had to chase for plates, glasses and cutlery, no one offered a menu or even a coffee… If the ‘spa’ gets sorted out and the staff become more attentive of guests it would make the experience so much better but as of now I wouldn’t recommend it based on value for money.
Positive experience: Pros: - Loved our barn (little burrow)- toasty, really tastefully decorated and an amazing shower! - The great barn is an impressive space for breakfast, dinner or an evening cocktail - Complimentary mountain bikes - loved using these to get out and explore and the staff were very relaxed about timings - Great local walks Cons: - Cars everywhere onsite (see photo) - we had cars parked directly outside our barn, to the point where we couldn’t get up our path. We came via train so it was frustrating to have the area ruined by so many vehicles, especially for a quieter time of year when it feels avoidable. - Poor soundproofing - we were in an adjoining barn and sleep was disturbed by the barn next door.
Negative experience: We went for the spa day which we were told was 10am-5pm and told to arrive 15 minutes prior therefore arrived by 9.45. When we arrived we were given our smoothie shot and just left in the barn without being informed of what was going on. We were told there was nothing to do until our first treatment time of 11:30 so we were just sat waiting around until then. I was anticipating that a spa day 10-5 meant full access to the facilities but due to limited facilities they have to be booked on a private basis and we could only use the sauna and steam room on our allocated hour. The massage ladies were lovely and we enjoyed our massage. We then had our lunch and we were told via email that our request for an afternoon tea was included (also states this on the website that you can choose either an afternoon tea or lunch). When we sat down we were just given a two course lunch menu and not asked what we requested, therefore never received the afternoon tea. We also were not asked for our soft drink included and we had to chase this up. Again, our allocated slot of the sauna was not until 3, so from 12:30-3pm we were left hanging around doing nothing. The showers were not working so we could not even shower. I feel for the price you pay - the spa day is not worth it and felt the service was lacking. Most of the day we had been sitting in the barn doing nothing and waiting around. There is also not a-lot to do around the premises unless you stay there.
Positive experience: The rooms are a great size, with a kitchen area, sofa and a very large, comfy bed. The grounds and restaurant are all lovely. I think it's quite over priced for what you get. The breakfast is basic, unless you want to pay extra. The spa also gets booked up far in advance, they don't have space for guests to book on the weekend, which was a shame.
Negative experience: One star because the showers that are meant to be accessible with the steam room/sauna were out of order all weekend…..there was no warning or apology for this just signs up when you arrive. Really poor for somewhere that calls themselves a spa retreat
Positive experience: This was my second visit to Retreat East. The first time I went for lunch and although good quality and nicely presented, it was over priced and the food wasn’t hot. I decided to give it another go and took my Mum for her birthday lunch. Again.. staff were nice but food was almost cold. The custard served with dessert was split! I was more disappointed about this as I couldn’t believe they served it! It is a beautiful barn and lovely staff but sadly I won’t be returning again.
Positive experience: Wonderful place for a mid-week girls' get away in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Very cosy evenings by the fire in our cottage, The Farmhouse, although the quirky angles and low ceilings may not be for all - watch your head! Great location for autumnal country walks followed by fantastic spa treatments to rest and recover. Good food in the Great Barn for both dinner and breakfast. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Just a few housekeeping issues detracted a little - for example the sauna was out of action and the coffee machine in the restaurant was broken at breakfast.
Positive experience: Nice size rooms for couples with a lounge area. Tiny rooms that are cold for single occupants. Doesn’t feel 4 star, there are no change of towels, not cleaned once over four days and beds have not made etc. There is no way of contacting reception from your rooms. Spa treatments impossible to book. Food is a bit hit and miss, the scones are tasty and the salads are amazing. It feels as though they have a concept but it hasn’t been executed the way it could’ve have been.
Fantastic experience: Really lovely relaxing stay at Retreat East back at the beginning of October. This was a birthday surprise from my wife. We were staying on a Spa, Supper and Stay style package and all was lovely. The massages we had were great. Very dog friendly, our large greyhound was very well catered for although we did make sure to bring his own bed as the bed in the room would be more for a Small/medium doggy. There are plenty of places to explore and walk on a short stay. The outdoor bath was definitely my favourite part. The only one issue we had was at breakfast but this was quickly rectified by helpful staff. We would love to come back and to stay in the summer.
Negative experience: We booked this as a birthday gift. Dinner was lovely on the night we ate there but to be honest my overwhelming review is that it is very overpriced for what is included. Basic breakfast, no cooked options and no barista style coffees included! Uncomfortable, hard mattress. Limited spa facilities for somewhere that calls itself a “retreat”. Also our room was described as having “views across the estate” - all we could see was the nearby lodges and the car park. It’s far too expensive for what it is, which is a shame as the Great Barn is very pretty.
Fantastic experience: Visited with family for a birthday meal at the weekend. Surprised how far away from restaurant parking was. Thank goodness it wasn't raining. Once inside the amazing barn, we were welcomed by friendly, polite staff, enjoyed a pre dinner drink, followed by an excellent meal with very attentive service from all staff on that night. A special mention for Anya, who was very knowledgeable when asked about the dishes on offer. A delightful young lady.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to come and relax
Positive experience: Would say is overpriced for what you get and breakfast should really be included, continental breakfast which is included is quite disappointing/ stale and service is slow. Also they booked a hen party to use the function room next to the dining room during our last dinner, with loud music and the door constantly open which is really disappointing considering it is supposed to be a retreat. Otherwise had the best time !
Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay at Retreat East in the week of Sept 16th. Along with our dog Olly, we all felt welcome and could relax pretty much as soon as we arrived. It's a very easy place to exist, with food and drink available throughout the day. We look forward to going back. Highly recommend booking a massage! One of the best I've ever had.
Fantastic experience: A little late reviewing, but did a mini-moon with my wife following our wedding in June 2024. Cannot speak highly enough of the facilities and staff at Retreat East! Highly recommend visiting for rest and relaxation, and really enjoyed taking the bikes out for a ride to a local farm shop. The food is incredible, the sea bream was one of the nicest meals I've had in Suffolk. Was also lovely to meet Dominic and the team, and being Australian where we love our coffee; I can honestly say this is the best coffee in the UK! Looking forward to my next visit.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely superb! If you're looking for luxury dog friendly accommodation, amazing food, great facilities and really friendly staff, in the heart of Suffolk, then look no further.
Fantastic experience: We have now stayed at Retreat East twice, once in June and also this week. I’m glad we found it on the internet. We really like everything about Retreat East so much so that we have now booked to stay for the Christmas week 2024. It is a very special place and has the rare qualities of attention to detail, a natural unfussy environment, friendly welcoming staff with, at the same time, a peaceful privacy. The barns are extremely well kitted out, the beds are very comfortable and the quietness of the surroundings means that it is possible to truly relax in the midst of nature and also get a really good nights sleep. The quality of the food which is served in a beautiful barn is locally sourced and delicious. Some of the barns also have excellent self catering facilities. Having a spa too is an added bonus. We are very happy that we can also bring our border terrier Foxy who enjoys her stay as much as we do. Thank you all at Retreat East for a wonderful place to stay in my favourite county Suffolk. We will be making this our regular place to visit as it also enables us to catch up with our family and friends in Norfolk and Suffolk. Felicity and David
Fantastic experience: We have just thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing two night stay in The Granary at Retreat East. Beautiful accommodation in a peaceful countryside setting. Enjoyed treatments in the spa & The Great barn is a lovely space in which to enjoy the delicious food. Many thanks to all for the friendly & efficient service.
Positive experience: We are having a very relaxing stay for our babymoon. The room - The Coop is perfect for what we want - to relax. I had the most incredible 60 min facial this morning which was out of this world and a 60 min pregnancy massage. The spa manager Emma who did the treatments is very skilled and she was extremely accommodating and flexible. The food is delicious. The great barn is lovely to dine in.
Negative experience: Lovely staff at reception and in the restaurant. We stayed here for 4 nights as we were looking for a quiet getaway from the city. Rooms were nice upon arrival, however a little disappointing after taking a closer look. The throws had stains on them and the couch had a strange smell (which all I can ignore since it’s definitely not a necessity). Sink was a little clogged, water doesn’t flow properly. Outdoor bath was really nice though. Disappointed that there isn’t a make up service provided, and the QR code provided for room service doesn’t work because the menus wasn’t updated. Food in the restaurant was ok for dinner, however lacking for breakfast. Their continental breakfast option was really basic, so we ordered scrambled eggs but it was horrible. And the day after I ordered two poached eggs on its own, and was charged £12.50. Again, staff were really really nice and service was great. Conclusion, I think I expected more for the price we paid. It’s definitely a great place, beautiful countryside and very serene. They could’ve done so much more with this place. But overall just disappointed and wouldn’t recommend.
Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful time here with my running and wellness group for a short weekend retreat. Everything was perfect: the rooms, the food, the countryside surroundings - and the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to return.
Fantastic experience: Went for our anniversary it was just fantastic stayed in a shepherds hut used the sauna and jacuzzi nice touch you can book your own slot . Had a facial probably best I’ve every had highly recommend x
Positive experience: Would have been 5 star if a cooked breakfast was included which I really think it should have been! Everything else was spot on. Facilities, setting, service all lovely
Positive experience: This is a review of the Great Barn restaurant at Retreat East. Service was great and the facilities were very nice. But the food was a bit blah. Healthy restaurant probably means less salt, less fat, etc. making the food a bit flavorless. Nettel soup was bland. And our two vegetarian entrees were less than flavourful. Desserts were very nice, coffees a bit tepid.
Fantastic experience: We loved our stay at Retreat East. Our barn was beautiful, the food in the Great Barn is fantastic and there are lovely walks and bike rides nearby. We will definitely be back!
Fantastic experience: We spent two nights here for a 'Team Strategy Offsite' and it was brilliant. Everything went smoothly, and we could not have asked for a better two days. Caitlin was an instrumental part of the preparation and making sure everything went as planned and want to say thank you to her for this. The food is delicious, there are several excellent meeting rooms for private dining / team get togethers and the bedrooms are really special. It is also located in beautiful Suffolk with plenty of local countryside walks. Would highly recommend for any corporate team event, or even a trip away with your partner or friends.
Positive experience: The accommodation was comfortable. However, it seems there needs to be more focus put on the attention to detail. When renting an entire 4 bedroom property, it was missing several basic essentials you would expect! For example, an iron, ironing board, can opener, cleaning products for the kitchen, kitchen cloths and towels, etc. The freezer was basically unusable due to being completely frosted over so the door didn't shut. The view from some of the windows looks out onto rubbish! And the massive cracks all over the walls are a little concerning. To improve the property, it definitely should have a dedicated hot tub on its own patio. There was not enough time or space to use the only 1 on-site that is shared between several properties. It is not very private as people can walk and drive right past.
Fantastic experience: Never really stay in quiet retreats as I'm more used to staying in city centre breaks but for a mini moon we booked for peace and quiet and this retreat ticked all the boxes. The room was a nice homely cabin well decorated and with its own outdoor bathtub! The great barn was good for food and wasn't that busy as people eat at different times. Being able to book the spa facilities for private slots was a highlight. Will be coming back
Positive experience: Great place to have a nice weekend break, go for walks or just chill. Spa facilities available but did not use as quite noisy at times. Only downside is it's quite expensive especially in the restaurant and café/bar area. We didn't use them because even though the venue is nice it didn't justify the high prices. In my opinion, if the prices were reduced they would be far busier as it was always very empty when we walked passed, shame really. Would I return?, probably not, but nice to have tried it.
Fantastic experience: Great night away as a birthday treat. Also used the free steam room and sauna. Massage was extra but worth the price. Could supply umbrella ☔.
Fantastic experience: We had the most amazing time at Retreat East. The staff were accommodating and friendly from the moment we arrived, the food in the restaurant (both breakfast and dinner) was delicious, and the room was perfect (Little Warren). I had a facial and my partner had a massage, both treatments were incredible and worth every penny! My facial was with Emma, she took time to understand my skin and used the perfect pressure throughout. The products smelt lovely and there was an arm, décolleté and head massage included whilst each mask was on. We will definitely be back soon! X
Dear Roxie, Thank you for your lovely 5 star review! I am so pleased to hear you had an amazing time with us at Retreat East. The whole team will be delighted to hear your comments! Hopefully we can welcome you back soon. Customer Care, Retreat East
Fantastic experience: Lovely accommodation, great food and a peaceful location in which to relax.
Hello Tom, thank you for taking the time to leave us a 5 star review! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit to Retreat East! Hopefully we can welcome you back soon. Customer Care, Retreat East
Negative experience: Disappointing meal at The Great Barn for Mother's Day. The Barn was dirty, glass stains all over the tables and we were served with grubby drinks menus. Waiting staff messed up our orders with no apologies and bad attitudes. For the money it cost us it simply was really below standard. Have complained to the customer care team since, who escalated the query to the restaurant with no response back as yet. The food however, was delicious but let down by everything else going on around us.
Negative experience: I DO NOT RECOMMEND. WASTE OF MONEY. Dirty sofas, lots of water in the sauna, with moldy smell, continental breakfast with croissants and fruits only. ROOM: Firstly, the idea of having it a cute spa retreat is great - the disappointment of it is the implementation. The whole was okay, but you can see the cheap finish. Secondly, we had such a disgusting dirty sofa in our living room. We took a bigger as we wanted to have some privacy and chill by the fire place on the sofa, which was so dirty I had to ask them to fix, to which THEY DID NOTHING. We ended up using the blanket to cover the sofa. Thirdly, the view! We came for the nature and peace. However, in front of our “one of the best” room were a parking. A parking! I would open my window and would see people getting on and off from the cars, walking around and living their life. Wow! I was shocked. BREAKFAST: my partner knows how much I love breakfast when we stay in hotels, so he made sure that it’s definitely booked. Exited we went for our first continental breakfast. Omg, they had No cheese, no hun, no olives or anything savory, pretty much nothing. I ended up refusing to eat and we had it taking down from our bill. You could have had a breakfast there for additional pay. Don’t get the continental breakfast there - waste of money. SPA: the most disappointing and disgusting. The sauna was stinky, if the water up to your ankles didn’t put you off of getting in, the moldy smell would definitely do the job. If you use the Jacuzzi you would feel like you are in a zoo, as it’s in a very interesting location, by the road, not far away from the parking. FOOD: The food was okay, sometimes I even managed to enjoy it. LOCATION: it’s far from everything. If you like walking around, it’s fun to have a walk in a field. BOOTS RENT: I don’t recommend. It’s easier to buy your own boots and bring them than hire them there - they don’t give you clean boots.
Negative experience: Really disappointing spa day. Loud unnecessary music in the cold uncomfortable communal area which they refused to turn off even though I had a terrible headache. There was no where else to sit and wait between using the facilities and we had long waits. It forced us to abandon the day and go home early. The waitress was cleaning the tables and chairs while we ate. Treatment was ok. Showers changing room disappointing. The whole experience was quite stressful as a supposed spa day. Do not recommend.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic food. We went on a Sunday for their roast and ended up having 3 courses as the food looked (and tasted).so good. It's rare you get a restaurant that aces starter, main and dessert but everything we tried was a supremely high quality. It's not the cheapest place but some things are worth paying for and this is one of them.
Positive experience: I was spoilt to a long weekend trip away to Retreat East and it did not disappoint. The cabins / lodges are finished to a very high standard and we both felt very relaxed throughout. They do allow dogs which was a must for us but they do charge quite a lot for the luxury. Spa was lovely, massage was great and the main barn was cosy by the fire with a cocktail. Comments for improvement, they need more than 1 hot tub available for the number of guests staying and the parking situation was tight but I understand an overflow carpark is available for high season. In the main barn, we ordered a coffee, a diet coke and the house salad which came to £30... That's a bit much. Overall, a beautiful spot and we would highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: We have called in at Retreat East for coffee and cake part way around one of our favourite walks on a number of occasions. The staff have always been most welcoming, despite our walking boots and muddy dog. In the summer we sit outside but were invited into the lovely restaurant today. We'll be coming back and can wholeheartedly recommend the cafe/restaurant to others. Some of our party are even tempted by the spa facilities.
Fantastic experience: Me and my partner came to stay here for his birthday and had the most amazing time. The staff were so accommodating and amazing and our cabin was so beautiful. Please visit if you are ever in the area!
Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay, all staff are so helpful and welcoming. We really felt looked after during storm and power cut. All round 10/10
Fantastic experience: Great place for breakfast even if you're not staying in the retreat.
Fantastic experience: Just perfect! The staff and welcome was personal. The accommodation was clean, spacious and well decorated. The facilities are great. This is a wonderful place to stay to relax and get away from it all! Would highly recommend it and it is reasonably priced! Thank you!!
Positive experience: First visit for dinner. The driveway is very poor with lots of potholes and signage very poor on a winters evening. Once we found the entrance a nice warm welcome. Very quiet in the restaurant and a very limited Christmas menu which wasn't explained when we booked many weeks before. Lovely food.
Fantastic experience: I rarely take the time to write reviews but as far as Retreat East goes, this one deserves upwards of 5/5. Impeccable experience on so many levels. My fiancé and I arrived on Friday and stayed in The Hive, which was a beautiful cabin with a living area + kitchenette, underfloor heating and a lovely bedroom with a huge (and unbelievably comfortable) bed. Meals were served in The Great Barn which was a lovely, warm and beautifully lit room, and the meals were of high quality. It also had a really nice fireplace too which added to the cosy nature of the barn. It was also a nice chance to meet other people who were staying there. One thing I absolutely loved was the service and just how kind and eager the staff were, which was a really nice touch. They also had a series of games available there such as Connect 4 and Scrabble, and my fiancé and I had many battles which was so much fun! They had really nice spa facilities too (I love using sauna, steam and cold in my weekly health routine) so for us to be able to use it for an hour was really nice. The grounds were also really nice and quiet to walk around, and although it was pretty muddy due to the rain, going for a lovely walk was very nice indeed (we were going to go on a bike ride on Sunday but it was raining). We loved it so much that instead of staying for two nights, we booked an extra night and made the most of a really relaxing Sunday. Couldn't have asked for any more from a staycation: great food, lovely ambience, lots of peace and quiet, and fantastic service. We will likely make it a yearly thing to come to Retreat East as it is truly fantastic. Well worth the money, and we look forward to coming back!
Fantastic experience: I had a day spa voucher to use at Retreat East and thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. Layla and Isobel were particularly attentive and lovely to chat to. Isobel’s consultation about my skin needs before my facial was fantastic and I felt she really listened. The afternoon tea was lovely and very filling, with multiple members of staff checking on me frequently. I also had plenty of time at lunch which I enjoyed as I got to read my book. The location was also stunning and very relaxing as a nice retreat getaway. The hot tub was particularly fantastic, as Layla had prepped this for me and it was super warm compared to the cold outside. Finally the sauna facilities were great and I loved that all activities through out the day were exclusive to me. Despite there being other spa guests they schedule it really well so you don’t end up sharing the facilities and it feels even more luxury. Overall I’d say the experience felt very bespoke and I certainly left feeling pampered. If I had one small improvement to make, it might have been to have a brief tour upon arrival as I didn’t managed to find the changing room and lockers until later in the day.
Fantastic experience: Amazing stay staff so friendly and helpful, out cottage wa the granary beautiful so clean and luxurious. Spa wonderful we had massage and facial by Amber, who was brilliant.produts used smelt amazing. Our dog was very welcome everywhere. There are off lead walks from the doorstep, so there is no need to leave the venue. Restaurant was brilliant breakfast and dinner. Cater dor vegans very tasty . Highly recommend. We will return so relaxing.
Hello Angela! Thank you for your lovely review! I am so pleased to hear your visit to Retreat East for your special Birthday was so relaxing. We would be delighted to welcome you back in the future. Customer Care, Retreat East
Negative experience: Disappointed with the length of time you’re allowed in the spa and jacuzzi (only 30 mins each). Not a huge selection of food and wine options on the menu, and the food and wine were pretty overpriced for what it was (portion sizes were tiny). Tables were really sticky and ruined a top and a jumper. I wouldn’t pay that amount to stay in our barn either (The Den). The bed was comfortable but when we arrived it was really cold and pretty small. Sofa wasn’t very comfortable either. The grind coffee machine was a nice touch. Service in the restaurant was also extremely slow and I had to go up to the bar and order myself a few times. Really gutted as I paid a lot of money to take my boyfriend away for his birthday and he wasn’t impressed at all. Breakfast finished early at 10:30 and lunch finished at 2:30 so very restrictive and not very relaxing.
Fantastic experience: We had such a lovely stay here - I just had to leave a review. We came looking for a lovely relaxing time away and that is just what we got. Staying in the hideaway - one of the new Shepards hut. Gorgeous views, seeing the sunrise and sunset. Perfect little space. Lovely little touches. We booked our spa session and hot tub session. As other reviews said, it’s not a huge spa (in comparison to other locations) but it is really unique that you get to book the whole thing to yourself - makes it way more relaxing that sharing a steam room awkwardly with other people - in our opinion! Services was perfect, so attentive in all areas. Amazing drinks choices, food so delicious that we will be talking about it for months to come. Love the little touches like using the bikes, or wellies for a bit of exploring. Not a huge amount around the immediate area but the perfect spot to slow down, take time to catch up in the lovely countryside. It’s going to be an annual trip for us, we can’t wait to see it in other seasons and try some of the other places to stay!
Positive experience: Went for a Sunday lunch only. Not a great choice of main courses or of deserts. Dining room was very big, and drafty occasionally. Not cosy. On the expensive side.
Positive experience: Overall, I was disappointed with the trip to Retreat East. There is so much potential with the venue, but too many elements that don’t live up to the prices or the positioning. The food is overpriced and I had to send back a £35 priced steak twice because it was cold. The menu options are limited and lack variety, which is really disappointing because there’s not much nearby to choose from. The breakfast offering is weak. They offer a basic continental breakfast which (again) is really limited and not very appealing. The cooked (al la carte) options are fine but it feels like Retreat East have really missed a trick with something so simple. Service is also poor, led by a young and very inexperienced team who let down the experience and considering the prices, this should be addressed. Facilities are also limited and need prior booking which made no sense and made it feel like hard work to pre-plan every part of the stay. Lots of potential here, but too many flaws

Positive experience: We came here for a last minute "babymoon". We brought our two year old and our spaniel with us. We were really excited to stay somewhere with some spa facilities and to have a good base from which to explore Suffolk. Check in was a welcoming experience except for the second bedroom in our barn not being unlocked until we arrived, which meant the room was extremely hot and took a very long time to cool down. The design of the barn was lovely...though we really wished that one of the bathrooms had had a bath. The main letdown with the accommodation was that the upholstery on the sofas and armchairs was very marked and stained which made things feel a bit shabby. It would also have been nice to have a bit more for families to do on site - like a small play area. As for food and service, the food was OK but a bit over priced for the quality and there could have been a better selection of nonalcoholic drinks on offer (e.g: 0% gin) as well as some decaf and/or herbal tea provided in the rooms. The service was really very slow and both dinners we had there took a very long time and led to a very late bedtime for our little one. There just didn't seem to be enough staff to keep things moving. Then the spa - I'm really perplexed by how this is marketed as a spa retreat when the spa is essentially a wet room with a small sauna, shower, and steam room off it. There's no ambience whatsoever. There is a jacuzzi outside. You are advised to book slots to use these in advance which takes away the relaxed spontaneity that you would envisage from a "retreat". Lastly, I had a lovely massage but was slightly horrified to find, on dressing, that the sheet I had been covered with during was covered in black mould. The therapist either didn't notice or didn't say anything. To sum it up, we had a nice time here on the whole but probably wouldn't come back. More care and attention is needed throughout to really make this feel like a special experience and to provide value for money.

Fantastic experience: As a coeliac it was refreshing to be able to eat safely off the menu for breakfast lunch and dinner, and have such delicious food. Everyone is super helpful and welcoming and the rooms are spotless.
Dear Kreview, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a 5 star review! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay and felt completely at ease dining in our Restaurant. We hope to welcome you back soon! Customer Care, Retreat East
Positive experience: I would describe our visit with one word - Meh… Nothing was bad but nothing was memorable either. If you are a foodie, into interior design, nature or know what a nice spa is - don’t book. You will be disappointed. I was looking for a quick getaway place for my husband’s 40th, a place that would be nice and special. I got the spa-cottage-dinner package for £480. Cottages: design was neat; but very conservative. Accessories were generic and felt cheap - like lanterns in a shape of fake deer antlers… Overall it was inoffensive, but didn’t feel nice or luxurious. Just a very generic room. Bath outside was nice though! Mind you, all the cottages are very close to one another, so there isn’t a lot of privacy. Spa: I would say 2 out of 10. Firstly, it was odd that the entrance to spa is from the main dining hall… facilities are humble - sauna and steam room and a very tired jacuzzi… the massage was just bad - the girl didn’t know what she was doing, just aimlessly stroking the back. Food: Nice. Just nice. Dishes were tasty, but nothing stood out. We eat out a lot, so I would say it was 5/10, perfectly fine. Nature: the walks weren’t especially scenic. I would suggest going to a nearby abandoned estate - really interesting building and grounds - Shrubland Hall Staff: the only excellent thing was the staff. Everyone was super friendly, welcoming, they even gave us a ride to the station as we couldn’t get a cab… Dogs: our dog loved it, as there were dog treats in every place you go :) and his bed was plenty luxurious!

Positive experience: Been here before for Afternoon Tea and absolutely loved it. A little more money than other places but the food felt luxurious and was different (not just sandwiches and cakes). My friend and I returned looking forward to having it again however they seem to have changed the menu (all the savoury is now sandwich’s). I think they have made the price cheaper and so the change of food probably reflects this. Still tasty but a shame it is much the same as other places now.
Fantastic experience: Perfect relaxation trip! The staff were great, rooms were perfect and spacious. The food was insane, we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at Retreat East - highly recommend the roast dinners. Recommended you book your spa facilities before arriving as these can get booked up. We will be coming back for sure!
Positive experience: We stayed in The Aviary, a cute shepherd's hut not overlooked by anyone. Free bike hire was a good addition and allowed us to explore locally.
Fantastic experience: We stayed in the Rookery, great room, lots of space and built to a high spec, loved how dog friendly the venue was. Would recommend if you’re looking for a weekend/few days away to chill out and unwind. Staff were all very friendly, could be a little more attentive in the restaurant though, we had to ask to order and drinks took a while on the Saturday night but no major drama!
Positive experience: A stylish spacious restaurant set in beautiful Suffolk farmland.
Fantastic experience: Amazing lunch. The food was Michelin quality but the wine was overpriced. Would happily pay more for the amazing food but £38 for plonk is frustrating
Positive experience: Lovely environment for afternoon tea, the staff could do with some retraining our waitress wasn't very efficient and we had to ask for top ups of tea and water. This is the 2nd time I have visited for afternoon tea and the 1st time we had to wait over half hour for our afternoon tea
Negative experience: We booked a breakfast as we had a voucher for Christmas. All seemed very nice, the breakfast arrived and we had to ask for the usual condiments as there were none on the table. The tomato sauce arrived as I'd nearly finished and we had to ask for more coffee, other places we'd stayed at ask this as part of the service. I'm not a fan of dogs in eating areas so a little miffed when two turned up with their owners. Towards the end a group of women arrived and one started breast feeding a baby sorry, but not for me over breakfast. The food itself was average at best we have had better at garden centre cafes.....the cost was nothing short or daylight robbery....far too expensive....we won't be back.
Fantastic experience: From start to finish my short stay at Retreat East was superb. Booked by my wife as a birthday treat we stayed for 1 night with the dining and breakfast included along with a massage. All staff we encountered seemed happy and helpful with the reception colleagues particularly attentive. Our lodge featured an outdoor bath, huge shower room, comfy bed and all the necessities for a comfortable stay. Our lodge was modern with all fixtures and fittings in immaculate condition and clean. The rainfall shower was a particular highlight for me as the pressure was high! The evening meal was of great quality with rich and tasty dishes and a large wine and drinks selection. Naturally as a spa break it would be silly not to book a treatment and the massage received was well overdue. I would not hesitate to book here again as the experience all round was fantastic. My only piece of advice would be for a signpost to be positioned on the road as the entrance is easily missed.
Negative experience: Very disappointing spa experience due to failed or non existent processes to ensure that facilities working as expected before customers arrive. 1 hour exclusive use of hot tub - we had only 25 minutes and the temperature was below expected when we did get in. 1 hour exclusive use of spa facilities and the sauna wasn’t working for the entire hour. The 1 hour treatment was excellent and the Afternoon Tea very good. When providing feedback to venue we were offered a complementary 30 minutes additional treatment if we booked another spa day this year. This one cost us over £250 and we would have to spend the same to make up for what we paid and didn’t get this time. Highly disappointing.
Fantastic experience: We had a wonderful two night break as a family of 3. It was lovely to get out of a city and spend some time in the country. Our accommodation was beautiful and relaxing, and the team were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
Fantastic experience: The staff are fantastic, the food was unbelievable , and a special mention to Stuart who couldn’t do enough for us , if your looking for a short break this is the place ,
Positive experience: Just returned from a 2 night stay. Our first time visiting Retreat East and certainly not our last. Stayed in The Nest and the room was brilliant, the log burner was used continuously and we took full advantage of the little treats given to us in the room. Sunday roast was one of the best I’ve had to date! Only observation is that sometimes it’s nice to have a relaxed meal, but the restaurant is very much a’la carte, so no bar/snack menu. Sometimes a burger would suffice, especially if dining in your room. Spa facilities are good, would be better with a pool! Overall, really enjoyed our stay and will be returning.
Fantastic experience: Really relaxing stay, spotlessly clean and fabulous food in the restaurant.
Fantastic experience: My wife and I stayed for five nights at RE and it really was the perfect break. From the delicious food, to snug room, excellent spa and wonderful staff. The team here have crafted something very special. Highly recommend tasting menu, afternoon tea, massage, walk to local village shop, trip to Aldeburgh.
Fantastic experience: We were looking for a relaxing countryside getaway and hit the jackpot at Retreat East. The quality of the accommodation and restaurant were excellent. But it was the extra touches that made it stand out: the amazing log fire, the bathtub on our private terrace, the bikes on which to explore the surrounding villages and lanes..
Fantastic experience: We had a fantastically relaxing and enjoyable stay in beautiful surroundings. Staff were great and the food superb, with brilliant vegetarian and vegan options.
Fantastic experience: We had a very peaceful two night stay, food was delicious and the local menu extended to wine too. It was great to have a wood burner in our room and a lovely basket of local produce to welcome us. We stayed in The Lodge which is furthest from the barn so very private. There may be some work noise during the week though as they’re putting in Shepherds Huts.
Fantastic experience: What an amazing facility. The kids and our puppy loved this staycay sooooo much
Fantastic experience: Such a beautiful place to stay, with stunning surroundings and the barns are absolutely gorgeous. We stayed in The Nest, which featured an outside bath, a four-poster bed and a waterfall shower. It also had a fire, which was so cosy. It was very romantic and beautifully designed. Everything is very high-end and luxurious and I really liked all the little extras, from decaffeinated coffee pods to a basket filled with local goodies. Breakfast is complimentary and is continental, it includes; croissants, pan au chocolate, fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt, toast and an assortment of jams and spreads, as well as fruit juice and teas and coffees. Very delicious and if you are feeling hungry you can always upgrade to the cooked breakfast. Whilst you stay there you also get allocated time in the spa area, the hot tub and the gym. We used all of these and really enjoyed having the space to ourselves. We only stayed one night but we came away feeling so relaxed. I would definitely go back and recommend it. It's perfect for a mini-moon, a romantic break or even a girl's pamper weekend. Also it's dog friendly, so you can even bring along your four-legged friends!
Fantastic experience: This was the second time of visiting Retreat East and it was just as exceptional as the first time. Staff are always lovely and helpful, the setting is so beautiful. Gorgeous barn we stayed in and we had the 7 course tasting menu this time which was an absolutely incredible experience. Definitely one of my favourite places in the UK to stay and we will be returning.
Fantastic experience: We held a company event an Retreat East and had an amazing time. Hug thanks to Megan for helping everything run smoothly and all the attention to detail. The food was excellent and rooms were fantastic. Retreat East provides a great location to do team building, hold meetings and escape the city. All the staff were great, always smiling and helpful.
Fantastic experience: A very nice 3 course Sunday lunch set in spacious barn type restaurant. Excellent service and value for money. Lovely rural setting we will return!!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place. Stables was amazing and we only dined in restaurant the first night but it was amazing and wished we’d eaten there the next night. Just got back and already talking about going back!
Positive experience: We went for a night at Retreat East which included a 3 course meal plus a treatment. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely receptionist who showed us around. First impressions were great, the lodge was lovely and cosy with a log burner. What I wasnt impressed about was the dirty and water marked glasses hanging above the sink, I would have thought these would have at least been polished to look clean. The food was amazing, from start to finish with great service. I really enjoyed the breakfast. As for the spa area, it was all a bit odd, you had to go in via the restaurant, an outside entrance would have been more discrete, we had an hour booked for the sauna etc, only to find the jacuzzi was occupied by others in our time slot and didnt want to get out!. The steamroom floor was slimy as if it needed cleaning properly. The hot tub could also do with a screen as it's in the walkway and very open.... not that we got to experience it. The only toilet in the restaurant is located in the spa area which seemed a bit odd too. I'd say it was quite expensive for what you get. Lovely quiet location and beautiful scenery.
Fantastic experience: We went for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu. The food was tasty and well thought out, the venue is beautiful and the staff were extremely helpful.
Fantastic experience: My boyfriend and I returned from a 2 night stay in The Nest yesterday and have both said Retreat East is by far the best place we have stayed in the UK! The barn was amazing, stunning décor and absolutely spotless - the outside bath just topped it! The food was delicious and the staff were all super friendly and so helpful. Our spa treatments were a-mazing (shout out to Emma & Abby!) and it was so nice to have the spa facilities and outdoor jacuzzi to ourselves afterwards. We literally can't fault the place and can't wait to go back!
Positive experience: Family birthday dinner. When we arrived there was a wait to be seated which gave us time to take in the stunning converted barn. There was a musician gently playing a guitar and singing in the corner. The menu was interesting with options for everyone. Starter of pigs cheeks was amazing. Sufffolk chicken was ok but bordering on the bland side. Ruhrbarb goats yoghurt was odd. So cold you could hardly taste the rhubarb and ginger. Deserts generally were disappointing on our table. Overall opinion was they were over complicated. Little things like some people had their coats taken for them, others had explanations of food by waiter/ chef but it all seemed quite random. Overall it was a pleasant evening but I don’t think I will revisit.
Positive experience: Lovely peaceful two night stay at Retreat East. Very much a retreat - quiet, not many folk around except at breakfast, but that suited us perfectly! Our barn (The Piggery) was beautifully appointed and comfortable. As others have mentioned, the soft furnishings are looking a little tired/grubby/frayed, but it was still a very pleasant place to stay with lovely products in both bathrooms and the kitchen. We enjoyed the log burner and the kitchen was well equipped for drinks and snacks. Just an ice tray needed to make it perfect! Good food in the Great Barn, continental breakfast was generous, though the cooked options looked good. We had a fantastic afternoon tea on arrival (let down only by the crunchy scones) and dinner on our second night which was delicious, if on the expensive side. We used the gym, spa and hot tub, but didn't experience a treatment on this occasion. As others have mentioned, the spa is pleasant but lacks a central hub/waiting/relaxing area which would improve the experience (reception in the restaurant area was a bit disconcerting - not somewhere you'd want to wait in your bathrobe). 30 minute slots for the hot tub and sauna/steam would actually give plenty of time and might help with the lack of waiting space. Access needs a little work too - we went out to the hot tub through the spa door, but on return this door could not be opened from the outside and we had to go through the restaurant in our bath robes to get back to the changing area! We would definitely make a return visit, but hope to hear that there are plans to refresh/improve the facilities soon.
Positive experience: This was my second visit to The Retreat East. The welcome and efficiently of the staff team was excellent. We stayed at The Cow House. which is situated very well and close to the Great barn and the spa. I felt that some of the soft furnishings were looking a little tired from my previous visit, which was in June 2022. blankets on the sofa and cushions in particular. The barn itself was clean. The spa was heavily booked and I would recommend reserving any treatments, hot tub and wet room facilities well in advance. Overall a lovely weekend visit.
Negative experience: Went for a spa day for two but was really disappointed. You get private use of each part of the spa (1 hour using hot tub, 1 hour using sauna/steam, and then and your treatment), but there’s no where really to go whilst you’re waiting for lunch/next hour slot. Also, it’s rather hard to spend an hour straight using a sauna (which wasn’t working) or a steam room. We felt uncomfortable sitting in the bar/restaurant in our robes whilst people were coming in for lunch. It was also quite cold with just a robe on, but would have been a nuisance to keep getting dressed/undressed again. The hot tub could have done with a clean - you could see the grime around the filters and the headrests kept coming off and floating around in the water. The lid of the hot tub had seen better days too. My facial was great - lovely therapist. I definitely would t recommend for a spa day - it wasn’t very relaxing; we felt rather uncomfortable all day.
Fantastic experience: First time here, stayed in a shepherds hut wow was amazing. A lovely spa to relax the outdoor hot tub was very nice to unwind. I would recommend for a nice weekend break.
Fantastic experience: We had a spar day today with lunch. The service was impeccable, the facilities were top draw , very clean and private. The spa ladies were lovely and very professional. The food. The food was incredible rosettes will be coming to this place very very soon. Very clever creative and cost effective menu. Had a brief chat with the kitchen staff on there break and even they were friendly and chatty. We will be back very soon
Fantastic experience: Spent two nights here in January staying in The Coop. We had afternoon tea on arrival, and then spent the rest of the trip taking country walks and enjoying the beautiful room. Having a bath under the stars was a highlight for me. We had private use of the spa for an hour (sauna, steam room, ice shower) and the hot tub for an hour. Recommend for a Soho Farmhouse alternative, especially if you're looking for a really great room.
Positive experience: Sweet little cosy retreat set in the beautiful Suffolkian countryside. Perfect place for long, scenic walks and returning to warm up with hot cocoa by the rustic log fire. For the price point, it was slightly disappointing to find the full Suffolk breakfast, among other options, was not included with the bed and breakfast. It's also stated on the menu that no changes can be made (unless for dietary reasons). If you're paying for something you should be able to make requests. The hot water in The Stables seemed to have some sort of cap on it also, and the heating doesn't seem to ramp up above the 20⁰ mark.
Fantastic experience: Faultless. Everything had been thought of and nothing too much trouble. We had such a wonderful time at Retreat East. What a special place!
Fantastic experience: We stayed one night in the The Little Warren. Beautiful Room, but lacked a mirror close to a plug to dry My Hair, could not fault anything else. Very comfortable bed. The continental breakfast was good. Would stay again.
Fantastic experience: We opted for the seven course taster menu. My goodness, what an experience! Each dish had a story, was made from local, carefully selected ingredients, beautifully presented and delicious. Lovely atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Just back from an incredibly relaxing stay. The rooms are homely but luxurious, the spa treatments were fantastic and all the staff were friendly and helpful. There are lovely walks nearby, it was easy to charge our car, and the tasting menu was divine, with chef Adam coming out to present each course, which he adjusted for our dietary requirements. Will definitely be going back
Fantastic experience: This is a lovely countryside retreat - very clean, welcoming and new amenities. The most memorable part of our stay was the exceptional cuisine. We had a full tea, dinner and breakfast. All of the meals were fantastic and I highly, highly recommend a visit, you will not be disappointed. I would also add, the value for your stay is far beyond the price point - a hidden gem, perhaps...
Negative experience: Very nice rooms but extremely overpriced! Breakfast needs improving.
Positive experience: We stayed here for a weekend getaway from London. The retreat had everything we needed from spa facilities, lovely walks nearby, and dining at the Great Barn. We had an issue with the skylight blinds and reception was able to get a temporary resolution for us which we really appreciated.
Fantastic experience: We had a fabulous couple of days at Retreat East Spa Resort. We stayed in Little Warren, which had everything we needed for our stay. The price included a coffee pod machine in our room, with loads of pods, milk, teabags etc. Toiletries were supplied, lovely rose scented soaps, shampoo, conditioner and body moisturizer. Continental breakfast was also included, which had a huge choice, but we opted to pay for a cooked breakfast. Food in the restaurant was wonderful, freshly cooked and full of flavour. The spa facilities included a hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym, all free to use with the cost of the room. For an extra charge they do various massages and treatments.
Positive experience: Nicely hosted business room for our company. Staff however constantly fussing coming in and out with tea, coffee or just walking in by mistake and interrupting our meeting flow. Food was really nice. However I sat through in the bar (after lunch) to join a Zoom meeting and felt like I was a annoying the staff who were using it as a break area. Car park is a walk from the buildings which is very odd considering the high end nature, made worse by some arrogant guests just parking up wherever they please by the buildings without repercussion. Felt pressured using the toilets, I went into the one alongside the restaurant and 4 people tried the handle whilst I was in there so I became self conscious a queue was forming before I’d even managed to use it.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful experience. The hosts were so lovely and the location tranquil. The Spa Day treatments are second to none and made you feel special
