Negative experience: I wanted to continue here but the leg extension was not working. Always crowded which meant others were pushy so rest between was impossible. Also most of the equipment felt wobbly and unsafe.

Fantastic experience: Have been going to pure gym in ipswich for about 7 months on and off to both gyms. Colchester just is better. The only grip is it’s a little small, so if you’re anxious or impatient, be prepared to wait for a machine. I go at 5:30pm which is a peak time. The gym overall is very clean. Most people wipe down their machines which is great. As there has only been one time that the paper roll ran out. two machines have been out of action since I started and both were fixed in under a week! All the equipment i’ve used is super smooth mechanically, making a big difference with focus on mind-muscle connection. They also let me charge my phone. Lovely staff!

Fantastic experience: Went to puregym colchester tonight for the first time after leaving another gym. Abbey was super friendly and helpful so she deserves a massive pat on the back. She came up to speak to me and made me feel very welcome when I was just hanging around waiting for my induction. Also since the male showers were out of order she showed me where the disabled showers were so I could shower. The place is busy but there is a decent amount of kit in the gym so I didn't have to wait around or go hunting for any equipment that i needed to do my workout.

Fantastic experience: Been going to Pure Gym for two years now, love the selection of classes they offer and timings. I got stuck for ideas so decided to apply for a PT session with their trainer Hannah K as I found myself booking her spin and pump classes because they were really fun. It’s now been 18 months with her of which she has taken me to levels I didn’t think were possible. Strongly recommend this gym and Hannah K for PT if you lack gym confidence

Fantastic experience: I've been at PureGym since its early Colchester opening days, I wouldn't go elsewhere! The equipment is pretty good and good variety across the two floors. I've been going to Hannah K's spin class for over 2 years too and it's a routine staple! She brings the vibes that get you though the classes and feel fantastic afterwards. With that, PT-ing with her has been a revelation and couldn't have achieved my gym PB's in the last year without her. Thanks to HK and the PureGym team!!

Negative experience: Always mega busy its almost like they have allowed more member than can fit inside the building so its like sardines in a tin nobody speaks and its full of kids doing reps on there phone

We’re afraid it's true, our gyms simply are very popular and so can become busy especially at peak times, but this does fluctuate throughout the day and from day to day. To make the most of the space where possible, though, we are always looking to expand and improve our facilities. Members can also use the members area via the PureGym app or website, to see how many people are in the gym. Unfortunately, we are unable to monitor the usage of phones in our gyms, however if people are sitting on equipment we would strongly advise approaching a member of staff on the floor who will be able to help further. Positive experience: Ok gym - main issue for me is the lack of hot water in the men’s showers plus the cleanliness of the facilities

We would like to assure you that we are reviewing feedback and will ensure this is addressed in cub. We fully understand the important of cleanliness and this will be dealt with. We have recently made slight changes to the shower temperature, looking at improving energy efficiency. This is both to control our energy usage, but also with a look to reduce our carbon footprint. Our showers are now set at a temperature of 33oC and have a flow rate of 5 litres per minute. These parameters are regularly monitored and we also have regular checks carried out on boilers and associated equipment to ensure the units are operating as they should be across all of our gyms. On occasion, we can get faults on our water system which is normal. When this happens, there is a process in place to ensure we arrange for our contractors to attend, investigate and resolve the faults and return the systems back to full working order within a timely manner. All member feedback is reviewed, and brought to the attention of our Facilities team, who regularly review any changes we make to our gym facilities and all feedback is taken into account when making any future changes. Positive experience: Very good gym, very tidy and clean. Most of the equipment is in great condition. Only issue I have is the lighting in the studio upstairs isn’t always on during un-staffed hours, making it un-useable. Sometimes they work as you walk in, but often they don’t turn on so you cannot use the studio.

Fantastic experience: It was straight forward to scan in with the app and was explained well in emails, the app and on signs in the gym entrance. I went in and had a look around and rooms and areas were clearly labelled. I wasn't quite sure where to go for the class but I asked a lady who was using weights in the upstairs studio and she knew where to go and was very friendly. Sam the instructor for the class of learning how to use weights and weight machines was very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in hearing about my life and what I want to achieve from the gym, he showed me and the other participants correct form for dumbbells and how to use the different machines. I believe it is a very welcoming place and the people are very friendly. The classes make it easier to find a place to start when you are new like me so I would happily recommend to someone in a similar situation starting out.

Fantastic experience: Good gym with nice staff and good availability of equipment. Only down fall is there is a large amount of young teenagers that spend a lot of time talking and hogging the machines and a lot of posing. Overall it’s a good gym and I will remain my training.

Negative experience: There is a worker with short blonde hair in this gym that is so unnecessarily rude it has made me and others change gyms, I understand there are rules and somethings people need to be corrected but this workers approach and overall the way she speaks to people is disgusting and makes many uncomfortable.

Negative experience: Good basic gym and good basic equipment. However 1 star because of two main reasons. 1)Cold showers due to a PureGym policy of lowering the temperature to save money under the pretence of cutting carbon footprint. I don't like Luke warm showers and they are not hygienic. 2) poor hygiene and maintenance of toilets that are always blocked, broken or poorly cleaned or maintained. They really need to put customers before costs and improve hygiene.

Negative experience: Equipment is pretty decent but frankly if you want a usable atmosphere and you work something like a 9-5 simply don't bother. When I first joined in the summer of 2022 it was actually really decent - it was often busy but not overcrowded and you didn't have to wait long for a machine if waiting at all. However, due to factors both in and outside the gym's control, its basically filled to the brim with 17 year olds with curled hair all crowding the bench press for about an hour whilst they all test their 1RM. In all the times I have seen a staff member there, the occasions on which I've seen them doing things like cleaning equipment or putting weights back is very minimal. I'll still continue to go one the weekends when its not like the siege of Troy but I literally had to purchase another gym membership to use during the weeks so I could get a workout done in a reasonable amount of time. Having over or close to 100 people in that gym shows the priority of management and the company at large. Also the fact it takes weeks to fix equipment is a joke lol

Positive experience: Like the design and how big it is but overcrowded even during off-peak time, have to wait for equipment every time. Limitation of machines such as seated leg curl and deadlift platform. There’s minors(under 16) not doing exercise properly and talk too loud, afraid they will hurt themselves. Staff always cleaning and reranking weight but sometimes still messy of clips and bar with heavy weights. The toilets stings and no toilet paper sometimes, but can see changes these few weeks. The price is reasonable but quite cheeky to cancel or downgrade your plan. The music are quite nice, some pop songs and perfect volume. Never see people with a tripod which is beautiful, and quite a lot of young people with good physique. People and staff are quite nice, ask if I need help but classes sometimes it’s quite annoying they take over a place even though the staff is completely friendly as I need to move and cannot do hip thrust. Overall, if you are a person not seeking quick workout and experienced, it should be fine for you, but not really friendly to new member and again too many minors not doing proper job.

Fantastic experience: Nice big gym. Visit every now and then with my daughter. Plenty of good machines . Free weights Plenty. Can get busy but my daughter checks the app to see how many people in there. A good feature.

Positive experience: Good gym overall, nice vibes, equipment in great state, clean. But also there was also some equipment i couldnt find such as seated leg curls, or a rack for deadlifts, and not many lower body equipment, very biased towards upper body.

Fantastic experience: First visit as just moved to Colchester and loved the Circuit class.. Good trainer who motivated and corected and help. Everyone seems very friendly so looking forward to using it daily. Fab monthly charge and no tie in!

Positive experience: Pretty small gym but has all the kit you would need for any session. Quite busy even during off peak times so you probably won't get the kit you want. Can't comment on classes or PT, Clean and tidy overall and good price per month

Negative experience: This gym is going down hill there are only 2 working showers in the male changing room Rarely do I see them get cleaned and unfortunately I have caught a fungle infection at this gym They constantly play that they are cleaning the gym but i hardly see any improvement

Positive experience: For location and facilities, this gym is great, but there's a very, very young customer base, so expect to see plenty of gym nonsense. I understand that gyms need to make money but surely there should be some safeguards put in place if you're going to let 16 year old (and possibly under!) train unsupervised. It seems to me that they take their Qs now from social media rather than looking to learn what is or isn't acceptable in a gym in reality.

Positive experience: Love how it's 24 hours as my job doesn't have regular shifts. Music's a bit too loud. Would prefer music quieter especially near midnight or early morning

Negative experience: Signing up is very frustrating. I’ve been trying to join this gym for 3 days. After entering all my details on their website, the final bits not going through. Took time out of my schedule and went to the gym hoping the staff could help. But was disappointed. Even sent them an email. Still no response!

Positive experience: My usual Gym very clean and good range of equipment. Little overcrowded at certain times of the day. Could do with limiting number of people or expanding to accommodate the amount of people.

Positive experience: As a girl who loves her food I do try to use the gym on a regular basis. I've been a member of Pure gym for approx 6 years now, covering 2 different locations with visits to a third location. They have a wide range of machines from treadmills through to bikes as well as machines that you can work on your abs to thighs & anything else in between. You have quite the choice! There is a huge variety of other exercise equipment that you can use from weights, bands, balls & lots more besides. Then there are the Classes that are held by experienced staff on site. Spin class & work outs are my favourites. They do have on site personal trainers that you can pay to help you show you ways to get fit with a work out plan that suits your needs, lose weight & to use the various machines to help you achieve your goals. I have personally used a couple of personal trainers which truly did help me in the beginning as I had no clue where to start. The gyms in all 3 locations all had the same machines etc & all 3 were overall clean. The staff are mostly friendly & approachable. The only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars is the toilet & shower areas. Especially the showers as they could be at times disgustingly filthy. From stray hairs, shower gel/shampoo waste down the sides of the shower, left behind items like razors, empty products & detritus left on the floor are very off putting. So I no longer use the facilities unless I really have too. Otherwise all 3 gyms are kept clean & they do have sterilisation stations so you can wipe down & clean the machines & equipment you use. One thing I will say is that the membership price is extremely good indeed, there are no added fees or 3/6 month's notice if you want to leave the gym for good. They do have free sign up offers from tine to time as well as reductions for students. Overall my experiences at PureGym have been extremely positive indeed & I would highly recommend them. Enjoy! Fantastic experience: I’m only in my second week of going to this particular Pure Gym. I normally go to the Maldon one. This one seems to be very inclusive and very welcoming. It’s clean, well maintained, and the staff i’ve met so far have been very friendly and helpful. I’m yet to try the classes but i’m sure they’ll be equally as good.

Positive experience: Great facility but the classes are always packed and when you can get on them the class teachers are lifeless and uninterested. 50% of the time there is absolutely no staff to be found so if you have a problem there is no one to help you. On a positive note the cleaners are on it all the time! I've never seen such a clean facility. At the low price of £20 a month if you are a confident gym body with no need of help, a pool, spa or decent classes, it's great. However if you need a bit more guidance and a more bespoke and ranged service, I would go elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Ana-Maria was amazing (Shannon also very welcoming), made me feel so comfortable, showed me around and even spent a little extra time with me to help with my form etc, all on the Getting Started session. I've never felt more welcome in a gym, so thank you ladies, can't wait to come back.

Fantastic experience: First day here today and I am impressed with what's to offer. I'm on the off peak membership which is very reasonably priced. The equipment is plentiful across 2 floors and although it's not the biggest gym, there seemed to be plenty of space. The pure gym app might be one of the best I've used. It provides free workouts including videos showing how to do them. Getting in and out is easy if you just use the qr code in the app. I personally like to use the barbell equipment the most and found that some gyms don't accommodate much space for this outside of Deadlift and squats. Pure gym has plenty of space for this and the staff said the barbells can be moved into a different space if you need some other equipment too. The crowd there is quite young as it's right next to the Colchester institute but it was absolutely fine from my experience this far. The lock rooms have lots of storage and there's a bunch of well equipped showers. The space in the locker rooms is limited but I didn't experience any problems. Bring a padlock. From my day 1 experience I'd say that pure gym is easily worth the money.

Negative experience: Really basic gym. I visited this gym at an off peak time and nothing I wanted to use was available. I basically walked around for a few minutes & left. This gym is pretty spacious but they really cut costs with the equiptment. Probably the worst Pure Gym I have visited to date in terms of equiptment. Vending machines do not even accept cash.

Positive experience: Gym is basic and fair for the price if your paying the basic price. Staff could be more friendly. Doors don't always work straight away so I have to wait to get in and out also when your in the pod it can be very claustrophobic. I would like to see alder people in the gym as there are lots of students using it. If you pay for the better membership don't expect to get in all of the other gyms which is a shame, there is not really that many to choose from. Puregym policy on bag should be relaxed on people with medication which I need with me when I train. Now I have to have it on show with my stuff on the floor or on the machines that is not very good.

If you would prefer to use the bigger doors to gain entry to the gym, please speak with your gym manager. For health and safety reasons we would need you to complete a separate induction but we can then activate this access on your PIN so you won't need to use the pod doors. In terms of multi-access, all of our gyms are priced individually so multi-access is divided into price brackets. If you would like to upgrade to include multi-access please feel free to contact member services with the gym locations you're interested in so we can help advise on the price for this. We ask members not to leave bags and property around the gym floor for health and safety reasons, however if you have any concerns the best person to raise this with would be your gym manager. If you drop us a private message, we can help provide their contact details! In the meantime we do hope this does not put you off of attending the gym. Thanks, PureGym

Fantastic experience: Amazing gym. It's got all the equipment needed. The staff are really friendly and helpful, which is a bonus after my partner had a bad experience at another gym, they made her feel welcome. 24/7 is really great as well as there's no pressure to get to the gym when you're busy.

Fantastic experience: Good equipment. Often not overly busy unless you go 5-7. Even then, it's quite manageable and you can still get a workout in. Only 1 bench press for the entire gym though.

Fantastic experience: Nice and clean gym. I had Coach Carl as my personal trainer and he was amazinggggg!!! From my initial enquiry, Carl was very welcoming and took his time to understand my goals and establish a plan that was achievable for me. Whilst I may not have been the most consistent client, Carl remained patient, tolerant and continued to adapt the programme around my schedule and abilities. With his help and continuous support, I was able to lose 6.6 pounds in 4 weeks!! Not only did he help me lose weight, he helped me to create better lifestyle habits and form better relationships with food. Carl is honestly an asset to PureGym and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone who’s looking for a personal trainer!

Positive experience: Been a member here for a few months now. Really quite like the place. When it took over the old inter-sport site I was disappointed to find about a quarter of that space walled off and turned into a subway. They could really use that space and add more gear but what they've done with what they have is impressive. Staff seem friendly and efficient. Like the 24 hour aspect of it very much as a shift worker. I do worry what will happen if a LOT of people join and the covid restrictions on capacity are eventually lifted. Could become a trifle busy

Negative experience: App failed on first visit and no staff present to let me in. I had to ask a customer who was leaving how to get in. No staff to show me around. They advertise free WiFi but no password to access it and, like I say, no staff to ask. I did manage to connect to a free O2 wifi while I was there but it didn't work and not sure if it was the gym's wifi. Plenty of equipment though would be nice to have a bit of a tour of how to use things. Edit: I am looking at the app now. I can't see any inductions on the class tab. I have scoured the app for inductions but can't find any at all. Advice please! I found out too late that customers can input their car reg. Inside the gym - I didn't know this as no induction, so went 4 minutes over and got a parking fine.

The WiFi is provided by the open 02 Network and there is no password to log onto it/to access it. Sometimes there may be local works carried out by 02 that impact the network but that would be out of our control and we'd always advise finding local staff in branch to inquire about any WiFi problems. I am sorry to hear your app failed; your PIN is found on your welcome text and welcome email so you can use that to enter the gym. It might be an idea to keep your PIN stored on a note in your phone so if the app has issues again then you can still enter with your PIN. We hope your time with us improvise from that first visit and if you want to book an induction then these classes will be displayed on the class tab of the app and online members' area. If none are showing then please contact member services so they can put you in touch via email with the manager. Thanks, PureGym
Positive experience: Fantastic gym, very good cleaning and felt safe. Great equipment and find it better than The Gym Group in town as easier parking. However, the air con seemed really low (if it was on at all) others gyms seem to be a lot cooler. Would love to give this gym 5 stars, please turn the air con up a bit. Thank you!
