JD Gyms Shrewsbury

Negative experience: Been at JD 4yrs now, place has gone down hill massively, half the kit is out of action, with extremely long lead times on repair, I'm currently writing this whilst on the only working stair master in the place. The toilets run out of basic things like toilet roll and hand soap, and there is no longer blue roll and alcohol spray on the gym floor, meaning no way of cleaning equipment down before or after use. The place is honestly a dump now, all the kit needs fully upgrading, it's not like JD don't have enough money. Bins are always overflowing, litter all around the place. If it wasn't for the people I've met in here, I'd be out in a heartbeat...sort it out JD!!

Fantastic experience: Great place, Friendly atmosphere, car park is a litte small but found parking for free. You can park on the main road if you want to. Inside the place is very clean and got to go on all the machines I wanted to at 4.30pm. Keep it up JD Shrewsbury

Fantastic experience: Great gym. Just unfortunate that they've taken the decision to remove the paper towels and cleaning spray for users to clean down equipment before/after use. I understand that there are paid cleaners there but nobody is capable of cleaning the equipment as often as it needs considering the amount of use it all gets etc. Stop being tight and put the spray and paper towels back. Gym is great over all, if you excuse the handle attachments to the cable machines as wear and tear is quite high on most of em. 24/7 large gym with everything to offer really. Could do with more bumper plates to accommodate the growing number of weight lifters and powerlifters as well. Definitely worth going and also I think they should make Dave Thomas their poster boy because he's what every woman wants in a man and he is what every man wants to be. It doesn't matter that his bench press is below average

Negative experience: Compromised hygiene standards. Gym is good but you have to ask a member of staff if you want to clean down your equipment after sweating all over it for the sake of saving money.

Negative experience: I couldn't get out of the gym yesterday. Either the app or the connection here isn't working, it's probably the 6th or 7th time in the last fortnight, I went to the office, knocked, nobody there.. did a lap of the gym floor, not a single member of staff.. waited a few more mins.. Went upstairs.. and the guy, not sure his name just wondering around looking out the window. We shouldn't have to be doing that to leave the place. And echoing what other reviews have said, I can't understand why they have removed paper towels and sprays. It's all well and good replying saying if you want something clean go and tell staff, that's ridiculous. This was never an issue before the spray was taken, people would wipe their treadmill after using it. Now I'm expected to either search for one that isn't sweaty, or stop my workout, to hunt down a member of staff and wait for them to clean it. Ridiculous, yesterday was the last straw, I've cancelled my direct debit with the bank and won't be continuing after this month's membership.

Negative experience: Not sure what's happened here recently but I know there's been a change of management and things have gone seriously downhill. Firstly, they've removed the paper towels and disinfectant spray they had on the table on the gym floor, every day without fail I go to use the treadmill and it's covered in drops of sweat and handprints.. It's revolting, it's all well and good saying members should bring a towel and clean after themselves.. but they don't, and Im certainly not using my towel to wipe someone else's sweat. Cannot understand any logical reason why you'd remove them. Secondly the WiFi and signal in the gym has changed, cannot get any signal trying to scan in and out, see people daily stood trying to get the code to work. And there's numerous broken machines that have been for a number of weeks. If things don't change and they don't bring back something as simple as paper towels and spray, I will be leaving to a gym that does provide it.

Negative experience: Great gym, and love the spin classes and instructors are epic... BUT!!! getting rid of the tissue and anti bac spray after a spin class. That's just rank ! We pay for a clean gym not to sit in peoples sweat... Sort it out. Have some sense. Have some washable cloths, and bring back the hygiene standards ... Eurgh ! Manager needs to re think !

Negative experience: Staying in Shrewsbury with worked tried most of the gym this is the worst, very tired gym, smells, quiet, unmotivating music. Feels like a morgue. If your looking for a gym I'd say go to muscle flex gym it's just down the road well maintained and decent music!

Positive experience: Good gym lots of equipment so even when bust still stuff to use also easy to sign up good pricing and 10pound for your first month , only thing I think could be better is that the free weight benches could be full flat ones as the head bit is permanently up and cannot put flat for flys

Fantastic experience: I have been attending this gym now for 4 months. Gym is open 24/7 so available to everyone. POSITIVES: ●clean tidy and well maintained equipment. ●toilets are clean ●changing area is vast and has plenty of lockers ● friendly staff ● Classes are easily bookable/turn up ●women's gym area ●boxing area ●plenty of weights benches and stacks of different weights ●lots of equipment suitable for all needs and abilities ●entry via coded system ●emergency protocols clear ●OPEN 24/7 ●No tied in contract ●Vistor passes available CONS: ■Unstaffed overnight ■showers closed passed 10pm weekdays and 8pm weekends ■only one toilet available after staffed hours ■limited lockers after staffed areas ■showers either scold you or freeze you and fluctuate between this all of the time ■Visotor passes can only be used during staffed times ■no cups provided for drinking water ■music is loud and pretty rubbish (depends on type of music you like) but you can hear it over ear buds and you shouldn't need to have your music up loud to drown theirs out. Definitely the best gym I have attended, I don't feel like I'm out of place here and I'm not judged by anyone. Price is £21.99 a month for a standard package so if you visit once a week or more is great value, or you could purchase some day passes during your visit at £5 a time and just pop in during staffed hours whenever you want. There's a few influencers here though, non of them have an issue with people around them and if you don't want to be filmed they are respectful as there's a no tolerance rule here. Only ever found 1 treadmill out of order out of around 15 of them! There's so much equipment and it's well played out so no being onto of someone else thats working out. All in all 9.5/10

Positive experience: Signed up with a £10 for the first month offer, £23- £25 a month thereafter which I feel should be £20 a month for what's on offer. Other JD gyms have better facilities such as saunas but this one just had the basics. Huge improvement since the refurb and old ownership. Firstly there is more equipment and always something readily available. 24/7 access is nice too with entry via a phone app, the old ownerships biggest problem was signing in on reception and the staff always trying to sell you something but paid no attention once you are in. You don't see the staff now unless you want to and when I enquired about a tour they were helpful. I've also seen plenty of staff cleaning down equipment so they are still very much there behind the scenes but leave you alone unless you want them which I very much prefer. I wish they had upgraded the facilities to include steam room, sauna etc but it's not a necessity. I would regularly attend if it wasn't for the location, nice if you drive but one hell of a dangerous road to cycle too as it's between the two main roads approaching the bypass. More an issue with Shrewsbury and transport in general than JDs fault though, if anything the location makes it easier to access than the other gyms (the town centre one for example being a nightmare to access). Lots of free weights, isolation machines, treadmills and cardio options and personal fitness instructors available should you want to pay the extra for one. Price is my only thing keeping this from a 5 star. The refurb is essentially a few more machines, a lick of paint and automatic access so less staff needed so I would expect the same or cheaper fee than the original pre-refurb.

Negative experience: Good equipment and stylish looking gym. Hygiene is awful, I don't see cleaners or staff members cleaning. There is one spray bottle and blue roll for the whole gym. The stretch area with the mats stink. Great lighting and large area so you've always got space to workout. Because of the stylish look it brings in a lot of the wrong crowd into the gym such as fashionistas and tripod camera influencers everywhere. Which gives off the wrong atmosphere in a gym in my opinion.

Positive experience: Good gym. Has everything needed. 4 stars as it's always very cold in there. Some more new classes would be nice. Quiet repetitive. Can't complain too much for the price though.

Positive experience: Lighting and gym is excellent and clean. Only things is shower place after toilets which seems unhealthy to go through toilets to get to shower rooms and no sauna.... but gym is beautiful

Positive experience: Classes are okay. Staff don't look approachable, but most are. Toilets for men are constantly dirty but they do get cleaned, one massive downside is that they got rid of the hygiene stations so if you want to do a spin class, bring your own wipes, not even hand sanitiser in the gym. Machines break a lot and take a while to be fixed. Showers are always freezing in the morning too

Negative experience: Read carefully any serious lifters. With JD going 24/7 in order to compete with Pure Gym, the gym has implemented a no gym bag policy or chalk on the gym floor. Serious lifters may have in their bags - straps, wristwraps, kneewraps, sleeves, gloves, belt, shoes, squat shoes, chalk, waterbottle, bands, headphones, notebook and a towel. There is no way anyone who carries their kit is going to be heading back and forth to the locker to satisfy a naive and ill thought out rule. In fact, most thefts from gyms happen from lockers. In the decades I’ve been training not once has anyone tripped over my bag nor have I witnessed anyone tripping over another bag. The biggest hazard in the gym are not bags but people who lift with poor form or over reach themselves ego lifting risking injury. This happens at JD all the time. The use of chalk is an essential component for Olympic and powerlifting. Whilst JD have allowed the use of liquid chalk, some lifters just don’t get on with it. So it’s no wonder with these new rules there has been an recent exodus of more serious lifters. The end result will be a ‘vanilla’ gym for the chest and arms crew and the instatweenie brigade. I’m hoping common sense prevails as JD has a decent amount of equipment. Just a shame how the gym is managed.

Positive experience: First visit the staff were rude when our app wouldn't work and weren't happy. Told them my name and typed in a completely different one and moaned when my name didn't appear. Couple of weeks in the main entrance is closed for works so using side door. No one was at door keeping an eye so anyone could wonder in. One visit after they finally have someone there and of course is same person as first visit and isn't happy can't find my name. I like this gym and will keep going with the equipment it provides but I want to feel relaxed and sadly I don't. The gym is always busy no matter what time I go with the machines I want always being used the whole hour I'm there for.

Negative experience: Original: The gym's staff exhibit a rather impressive mastery of the art of self-importance, unfortunately overshadowing their prowess in issue resolution. Parking quandaries persist despite conspicuous "no parking" signage, and the staff's commitment to verbal remedy remains consistently unmatched by tangible action. Noteworthy is the debut of a new personal trainer, whose interpretation of weightlifting decorum seemingly diverges from the adjacent sign's plea against dropping weights. An astonishing spectacle, indeed. Update/translation: 1. Your staff have done nothing to rectify customers parking on the access road where clear no parking signs exist. 2. Your new personal trainer Oliver Pope slams his weights down everywhere when there’s clear signs not to. 3. Good luck trying to get the “Manager” Bens attention unless you’re a young girl with a big bunda, that’s what he seemingly spends all his time doing.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely incredible. I've never been to a gym as tidy and clean.. The whole set of dumbells along the far wall was organised sequencially, so neat. The building is massive, with plenty of space between machines. As a regular gym user (40 years) probably the best facilities I've been to. Outstanding.

Negative experience: Went for first time, expecting to see a receptionist to tell them it's my first time, no reception. Just 3 turnstiles, then you go in and there was no staff, it was packed and full of school kids (25-30) all in groups around machines. Was there half an hour and never saw a single member of staff! Not my idea of a nice, welcome, friendly gym. Cancelled membership.

Positive experience: For the price, the gym is absolutely fine and has all the equipment you need. However if you don't wear headphones never use the gym when there is a lesson upstairs as the music from that and the main gym just merges into one horrendous noise and just makes being in the gym unbearable, I've had to walk out after 10 minutes it was that bad. Lesson learnt!

Negative experience: It’s a good gym, however, when it comes to handles for the cables there is a huge limit of it. I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO BUY MY OWN as the gym has scraps of it, one handle different to the other. Huge disappointment for such a big gym. Would be great to remove all the scraps and broken handles and put them in the bin and bring some new ones in :) Then I will give it 5* :))))

Fantastic experience: A really good gym, with good facilities and prices. A ladies only gym upstairs is nice, although doesn't mean that you don't see ladies on the general gym too, which is very welcome! Good class variety. Parking can be very busy at peak times, but you can always park opposite in the retail park so never a real issue.

Negative experience: Gets way to busy in the evening classes are always full they don't offer quiet or smaller classes good choice of equipment but if you are stuck with what to do with an equipment no one will notice. If you'd like a quiet gym with more one on one time it's best to go there

There’s a great selection of classes to get involved in too. All the equipment is nicely organised and always kept clean. Plus, the gym has plenty of flattering mirrors and good lighting for that perfect selfie! 10/10 ✨

Fantastic experience: This gym is the cleanest I've ever been to, the price is reasonable and the staff are amazing. The classes are included in the price and are rotated regularly too, there's a good range of things offered. I'd also like to emphasise again on how CLEAN this gym is. There's a women's only area too and I do enjoy the Girls Lifting Squad run by Sophie. I had a pretty poor experience over email with the customer service team after being over charged, but that's not the fault of this venue in particular who I can't fault. The only reason I came back after being over charged was because The Wellness Warrior Sophie, who is the loveliest person I have met. Sophie has helped me build confidence and make friends at the gym, without which I have struggled before and I inevitably would've stopped coming! There's such a nice community at JD, I couldn't see myself anywhere else.

Fantastic experience: First day of going to JD Gym today in Shrewsbury, and first impressions have been 5/5! The gym is spacious, clean, and has everything you need! And also it looks super cool with the deco and lighting designs! Think I've found my gym! The only downside is I wish it was closer for me as I have just moved to Market Drayton and no gyms local, but it must be that good for me to travel 15 miles to a gym! Says it all really!

Positive experience: I am updating a previous rating following a longer think about my experiences. This is a well equipped gym with lots of space and a hassle free environment, situated in a convenient area of Shrewsbury. It is unfortunately let down by severely loud music which makes the listening to of podcasts during exercise impossible and necessitates that music through headphones be played at 95-100% of max volume, giving me a headache after more than five minutes. This noise pollution is aggravated by the layout of the open plan layout of the building which means any further music from exercise classes only add to the problem. I was also disappointed about the response to a general query if it was possible to politely ask members to not douse themselves in a year's worth of strong perfume, in respect of asthma suffers like myself. My university gym had posters at the changing rooms and entrance which worked well. Occasionally, it is so bad that it feels like I can physically taste someone's fragrance and it can completely ruin a workout if it gets on my chest. It might be unenforcable but it would have been nice to show some willing or understanding of the problem.

Fantastic experience: Large and airy. Sanitising of the equipment is done regularly as well as sanitizer placed around the gym for everyone to use. Large range of equipment for use. Plenty of lockers, bring your own padlock, and hot showers.
