Warwick Sport Climbing Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Awesome place for a multitude of indoor and outdoor sports. Plenty of paid parking. Good little coffee shop serving light snacks and hot / cold drinks.
Positive experience: Solid climbing wall, inside a very commercial university sports centre, but once you get past the corporate facade and down into to the actual climbing wall it's got the same feel as most rope focused climbing walls. The bouldering routes seem a bit under-graded and less frequently reset than the main walls. Good number of auto-belays for the solo climber.
Fantastic experience: One of the best climbing centres I've been too. Huge variety of climbing walls, each with their own challenge. Walls for all types of climbers. Staff are helpful and nice. Prices are pretty reasonable too. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: Great facility and helpful staff. You will need an induction session and membership but we'll worth it.
Negative experience: Review specific to the gym, not the climbing center or swimming pool. Tldr; The gym staff are generally unpleasant and the equipment is low quality. If you're a first year at Warwick and live on campus maybe consider it for its proximity. If not, PureGym Leamington or almost any other gym that you can find will probably suit you better. Staff: At almost any time, can be found harassing women who are trying to exercise. Will only take a break from this to start ushering people out of the gym and asking you to not start any other exercises up to 30 minutes before the actual closing time. Even if you're the only person in there, they still make it a point to walk around and passive aggressively comment on the fact that you haven't left yet. Throughout the day they comment on the PA how messy the gym is and remind everyone to return their weights. It can get a little annoying but this in itself is not the problem, but being told to clear up after you're done while still actively holding the weights is quite patronising. I do not think most of the staff in the gym are necessary. Equipment: over 1/3 of the floor space is treadmills. Personally, I've never seen them actually close to capacity but I understand this is common for many gyms. However the wait time for high demand equipment such as adjustable cables seems very disproportionate, or sometimes you'll be stood waiting for a leg extension machine along with 4 other people. This is just a poor allocation of resources but for how much you're paying, it really shouldn't be this bad. Equipment variety outside of the treadmills is still poor. I'd say about half of the machines are multi-purpose which is fine, but the other half of exercise specific machines are just poorly chosen. Either for unpopular exorcises or are so un-ergonomic they're basically unusable past a couple kgs. Equipment is cheap or at least very very used. Weight plates are jammy as they have very loose tolerance on the bar. Equipment seats are cracked and uncomfortable. The floor is genuinely falling apart in places. It's bad enough I've seen multiple people trip over. Pricing: Incredibly expensive for what you're getting out of the gym. If you travel by car, ontop of your membership, you will still have to pay for parking every time you visit (I think it's 2£ minimum) My experience with this gym has been so bad that despite having a membership here I've occasionally ended up buying day passes to pure gym just to get a good training experience.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant bouldering area Great auto belay walls
Fantastic experience: Great place to get a start in rope climbing or bouldering. Friendly staff. Chilled atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: The whole facilty is available
Fantastic experience: Didn't participate but it looked ace!
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility, great staff, good prices
Fantastic experience: Cracking venue, helpful staff, safe and friendly. Worth a visit
Fantastic experience: Great place
Positive experience: Good number of autobelays. Helpful staff. Gets busy at times and equipment hire a bit pricey maybe.
Fantastic experience: Huge and amazing facilities
Positive experience: Nice climbing centre friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Attractive place for all types of indoor and outdoor games. Staff is very friendly and cooperative
Negative experience: Turned up at 1200 and got told the next induction will be at 1515?! Why is the induction a requirement to climb and not just sign a waiver? Like every other climbing gym in existence. Utter trash will not be coming back
Hi Owen, thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we are sorry to hear about the issues with the induction timings. We would like to discuss this further with you, please email [email protected]. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Negative experience: Absolutely horrible experience. I had to take a cab to get there on a rainy day. Then, the reception lady told us (in a condescending manner) that only one of us could climb today due to some ridiculous induction short staff reason. I’ve climbed in more than 50 gyms in 10+ countries, and this is a first time. Thanks Warwick!
Positive experience: Great centre shame parking is a rip off!
Fantastic experience: Great place, love everything there, girls who helped us thru were really helpful and happy. Recommended place
Fantastic experience: Excellent, great staff and facilities
Negative experience: Reception staff are absolutely terrible. Uninterested and unhelpful, acting like it is a pain to even talk to you. Ridiculous rules around needing an induction just to boulder. We left and went elsewhere. Anybody with actual experience looking for a bouldering session should avoid this place like the plague.
Hi Thomas, thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback, we are very sorry about the way that the staff have talked to you. We would like to discuss this further with you, could you please contact [email protected]. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Great ropes and boulder area. Quite a big centre and spread out so feels like there's more space. You have to hire harnesses for £4 which is ok
Hi Katy, we are glad to hear that you liked the ropes and boulder area, we hope to see you again soon. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: My Grankids visited on a Tuesday really loved it, especially abseiling down..
Negative experience: Not really a climbing centre for anybody who takes the sport seriously. Staff are totally disinterested and you’ll have to do an induction with an instructor regardless of your climbing level. The walls themselves look to have been set without any real sense of what climbing actually is supposed to be.
Hi Phillip, thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback, we are sorry to hear that you did not like our climbing facilities, we would love to discuss this further with you, please contact [email protected]. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Positive experience: Great place to climb with a mix of auto belays, ropes, lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering. The climbing is very good and staff are helpful but if you are just bouldering then I would recommend Coventry Ballroom instead. Avoid going on Tuesdays or Thursdays as they are particularly busy. There is paid parking but it is free if you are a member or you can add your number plate after paying for your session.
Hi Will, we are glad to hear that you liked our climbing wall, and that the staff were very helpful. We hope to see you again soon, thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing experience
Hi Rajendrakumar, we are glad to hear that you had a good time climbing, hope to see you again soon. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Very cool climbing centre, within the university leisure centre. Staff are very friendly and informative, a great selection of climbing and bouldering, within an open and well lit space.
Hi Joshua, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed our climbing centre, we hope to see you again soon. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding!
Hi Ken, we are glad to hear that you found our climbing centre Outstanding! We hope to see you again soon, thank you, Warwick Sport.
Negative experience: Would be better if the clueless staff in the climbing area where actually doing their job properly and being welcoming to the members/guests. Some of the staff is quite nice. The bouldering area is decent and the sports climbing is good as well. Hope the staff gets some training on how to actually do their job.
Hi A C, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, we are sorry to hear about the issues that you have had with the staff. We would like to discuss this further with you, could you please contact [email protected]. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Positive experience: Nice climbing lead walls. The reception staff were sarcastic and didn't want to be there. Nice climbing staff. Awkward rules around footwear that nowhere else has, like needing shoes when belaying. Seemed like a manager had a personal vendetta about it. Long sign up and induction test so book and come early for that.
Hi Russell, we are glad to hear that you liked the climbing lead walls, we are sorry to hear about the issues with staff, footwear and signup. We would like to discuss this more with you, please contact [email protected]. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Love coming here to the climbing centre with my friends. Friendly staff, very nice facilities!
Hi Z, we are glad to hear that you enjoy it at our climbing centre, we hope to see you again soon. Thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Really nice and friendly climbing centre. Pity it is not closer to my house
Hi Tim, we are glad to hear that you liked our Sports and Wellness Hub, we hope that we see you again soon. Thank you, Warwick sport.
Negative experience: £6 registration fee and a £15 induction session no matter if your experienced. Have to fill in your details on 3 separate forms. £40 p/m membership doesn’t even include parking. Joke. Save your time and go to redpoint.
Fantastic experience: Fun place for both kids and adults.Friendly staff too
Fantastic experience: We had a birthday party here and it was brilliant. The kids really enjoyed themselves and Lauren was outstanding. Adam was brilliant too! Also hired the small room at the back where the kids could have a drink and eat. They enjoyed the climbing, bouldering and games. Was very well organised. Thank you!
Positive experience: Great climbing gym. Could do with a bit more bouldering areas and some gym equipment. The lead climbing facilities are great and welcoming to all abilities. I'd recommend as a place to try climbing for first time as you can experience good quality bouldering and lead climbing in the same session.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing experience, wasn't too difficult to sign up once there. Was we'd not climbed here before we had to do the induction but it didn't take too long.
Negative experience: The climbing centre’s organisation, is a total joke. Easier to spend our money elsewhere. I could find the A-Team easier than booking a climbing session.
Fantastic experience: Excellent! Very cooperative staff
Fantastic experience: Great place to spend some active time!
Fantastic experience: Fun climbing - bouldering, auto belay, top rope and lead climbing available. For first time you need induction and there's shoes and harness hire £6,5 both.
Fantastic experience: Good routes
Fantastic experience: Great facility for climbing. Best to phone for bookings though as although it can be difficult to get through it is far less frustrating than the online booking system.
Fantastic experience: Loads of great climbs here, with lots of autobelays, lead climbing, top roping and bouldering all available in one. They even have a pair of speed climbing walls you can use! There is an extra fee the first time you go for assessing your capabilities, that's only £5. The staff were friendly and very helpful! Would definitely go again, and would highly recommend it to anyone in the area.
Fantastic experience: Great place!
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, helpful. All facilities present. Often visited. Used only climbing section, it is amazing, good for new starters.
Fantastic experience: Great place for the vertical adventurer, great for a kids party too. Very friendly and professional staff, worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. Took our two teenagers. Induction was helpful then left to enjoy. Will definitly be going back.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility.
Negative experience: Have to pay for an induction even if you are experienced, the cost of which goes up at ‘peak times’ - along with a separate £6 registration fee - ridiculously over priced. What are they smoking? Been to loads of different centres and never been charged for an induction! Initial registration or a card maybe, but not two joining fees at once
Fantastic experience: Brilliant centre for all abilities
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience , friendly and really helpful staff.5 star for climbing , 1 star for sign up process.
Negative experience: Sign up process is an absolute pain if you're not a Warwick student. You have to make TWO separate accounts and afterwards hunt for the booking section on the website. Moreover, there is no phone number - I had to look for it on their Facebook page - and calling only sends you to voicemail. Warwick Sport presents an unbelievable degree of gatekeeping, so I cannot in good conscience give any more than two stars, even if the facilities are acceptable.
Negative experience: Sadly can't comment on the climbing but the reception website and organisation are very poor. You have to book for an induction of 30mins and there are limited slots. We turned up and were turned away despite the seeming to be some free staff. Safety is of course very important but this was just daft.
Fantastic experience: Great place to do some climbing and boldening.
Fantastic experience: A very good place for those who enjoy bouldering and climbing, great instructors.
Positive experience: The main sports hall's floor isn't that great! Too many dead spots
Fantastic experience: Top notch sports facilities
Fantastic experience: Amazing climbing and experienced friendly staff. We went as two families with varying experience. The team there helped us with equipment we didn't have. Then reassuringly checked our capabilities and tailored their briefing accordingly. We all then enjoyed various levels of bouldering, belaying, auto-belay, and even speed-wall climbing. Great visit had by the kids and parents!
Fantastic experience: Very good, not used it yet, but looks great.
Positive experience: Nice when it's not crowded
Fantastic experience: Great routes and excellent boulder problems. Recommended for beginners and intermediate (up to 8a). Friendly and helpful staff, I definitely recommend a visit.
Positive experience: Large climbing area for a sports centre. Friendly and helpful staff. The registration process is a nightmare, make sure you fill out as much as you can before you arrive.
Fantastic experience: One of the best climbing facilities in Coventry, took my 12 year old here for an induction with a few hours climbing and it was ace, manager Alan showed us round and how to use the equipment, really professional, helpful guy. They have auto harnesses for the big walls and plenty of bouldering facilities, the ball room in town is better for bouldering but overall I would say this is the better location as you have both types of climbing. Cost about £25 for the two of us including harness and shoe hire, spent a few hours here and can't wait to come back!
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb. Much better for ropes than bouldering though. They really need to wash their holds soon as they're fairly hard to hold at the moment. Good setting though. Great place all round!!! Ps parking will cost you unless you're a fully fledged member so just be aware. Think it's £4 for 3 hours there or there abouts.
Fantastic experience: Very safe and suitable for children above 5 years.
Fantastic experience: My 12 year old son and his friends had a great time doing the climbing. Lots of options and variety of levels to keep everyone entertained. Lovely staff too.
Fantastic experience: Good mix of climbing activities (bouldering, lead, top rope and speed climbing). Not a massive climbing centre but good hight walls and welcoming staff.
Fantastic experience: Been an avid climber for many years and I am a member of the Warwick climbing centre. Always plenty of challenging climbs and bouldering routes with a great team of staff.
Fantastic experience: Fabulous facility. Nothing more to say.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing facility, but feels incomplete. I'm a new climber and joined a few months ago, absolutely love it, the climbing walls are great, if not a little sparse on beginners routes every so often. Staff are all friendly and eager to help, there's also a really nice community there, so for me it's money well spent.
Fantastic experience: Really good climbing gym with very friendly helpful staff!
Positive experience: It's a really good facility, and the only climbing venue I've ever been to that's actually warm in winter! Sometimes the setting feels a bit infrequent, though.
Hi Sarah, we are glad to hear that you like our climbing centre. We would like to discuss the infrequency of the setting with you, please email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon, thank you, Warwick Sport.
Fantastic experience: Slightly unorganised in terms of bookings at the front desk but friendly climbing staff, super safe, great fun to climb.
Fantastic experience: Sound
Fantastic experience: I love it! Routes are regularly changed, staff is very friendly, people are generally nice, never had troubles over a year visiting every week. Really nothing to complain, top class!
Fantastic experience: Came here on a rainy day and had a great time. Lovely space with good selection of bouldering, top rope and sport routes, staff are very warm and helpful. Good tunes too !
Fantastic experience: Incredible facilities and great staff. Bear cubs club is very well run and great for all ages
Fantastic experience: Friendly and helpful staff, lots of variations of routes with new sets added regularly. Equipment available to rent and instruction with bookings.
Fantastic experience: Great walls, but more importantly super friendly staff
Fantastic experience: I have been a member for 2 years. The environment here is quite good and always found the staff very helpful. Parking is free and cleaniness is remarkable. Would highly recommend this place.
Positive experience: Great facilities with a range of routes and they give you free harness hire on your first visit.
Fantastic experience: Truly amazing
Positive experience: Visited the bouldering wall for an evening. Friendly staff. Setting pretty good overall, but particularly well-set vert walls. Only downside is the centre is really warm which isn't the best for climbing. Didn't use the lead walls as just over for one night, but they looked good with a lot of auto-belays which is good if you're on your own.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic, all staff there (I chatted to Alan, Jason and Dan) are great, they took the time to show me around and were really friendly! Fantastic place to climb. Bouldering is well thought out and the tall walls will definitely get you pumped
Fantastic experience: Regular route changes that suit a broad range of abilities. Group and family friendly with lovely staff on hand to get you sorted with kit, teach or offer advice. This is my happy place, I love coming here. Get membership, it's addictive.
Negative experience: The more I go to this centre, the more I notice how much space and money they wasted to just make it look nice and shiny! There're climbing centres with half this space and at least 2-3 times more routes and walls. A great example of how bad managing can easily waste loads of money and space.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing gym. Staff are great
Negative experience: Not worth a comment
Fantastic experience: Great center, variety of very good and varied style routes, variety of holds, different gradients, upbeat music, auto-belays, cafe etc. Staff were extremely friendly and informative, yes the registration forms were frustrating having to fill out forms twice and car parking bit expensive* but would definitely come again *although was free cause meter broken.
Fantastic experience: Great variety of bouldering walls, auto belay and roped routes to suit all abilities. Plenty of car parking, friendly staff and good atmosphere all round. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Climbing centre is great
