David Lloyd Derby

Negative experience: I asked the general manager to call me in August. I subsequently asked reception every time I went into the club who assured me he would call. I’m still asking all the time. The fees were put up by 25% this year, the club room (particularly the kids section) is never cleaned in the day, there’s food all over the floor. I cut my hand in their toilet and they never contacted me. The outside jacuzzi isn’t warm enough in winter. It’s been impossible to get into some classes this year or even park because the club is now so over subscribed. It’s impossible to get hold of reception - I was calling all day last week to try and move a class and when I got through it was full (6 hours later) - I couldn’t book the class myself because their app doesn’t work properly for kids bookings. When I did get through, they cancelled one of my bookings for no reason so I had to call back again - their response was ‘I can’t book those 2 at the same time so we cancelled it’ - no call to let me know. The music was so loud when my son joined the kids club that he cried for weeks whenever I said he was going and refused to go in. He was new and the staff expected him to go straight in at 3 years old, without helping him even though he hadn’t met them before. He’s fine there now but it took a couple of months. The car park is impossible to park in sometimes especially on match days. You’ll get a parking charge because there’s no where to park, all because they let members park there and walk straight out to the match. They will suspend your booking rights if you cancel a class that isn’t full which makes no sense. The staff spend more time talking to each other than dealing with you as a customer, so much so that one of them walked into me as she was messing around with another member of staff in the doorway. She looked at me like I was in the way and didn’t apologise. The members sit in the jacuzzi together and joke about how bad the service is but there’s nowhere else to go. The club itself is great physically though needs some updating in places. If you ring David Lloyd directly, they say you have to speak to the club and do nothing. I told them again it was month 4 since asking to speak to a manager and they said he’d call last weekend - again, no call. I used to love going, but they’ve taken no accountability and don’t care. I would leave but there isn’t anywhere else to go locally with a spa - we pay about £3k a year to be there.

Negative experience: The gym, pool and spa. All looks amazing. Just wish the way of getting your money back if you cancel with in the first 14 days was easier to do. As been trying over a week to get my wife's contract cancelled and money refunded. This experience has really put me off wanting to join in the future.

Fantastic experience: My girlfriend and I went for a guided tour of the Club and were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of each facility. Each room has a dedicated reason for being there and all of the rooms are fully stocked with equipment, which is a nice change from some of the gyms i’ve previously been to. The staff member that gave us the tour, Uzi, was polite, friendly and gave us plenty of time to properly look around each part of the Club. Some things that stand out are that the gym doesn’t smell like sweat at all and is perfectly conditioned and each of the workout rooms have a unique smell to them.

Fantastic experience: This place is a fitness playground for adults! I’ve visited all of the luxury gyms in the area, but this one is outstanding. Ben was my brilliant tour guide, he did a great job of showing me round all of the facilities and explaining the recent investment for the club. The club lounge is excellent, and has co-working space that will be really useful as a remote worker. The spa area is spacious and the facilities are excellent, with several saunas, plunge pool and heated outdoor pool (and best of all it’s adults only!) The classes are state of the art and frequent, and the gym itself has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Yes it’s a higher monthly cost than other clubs, but you also get a lot more for your money and it’s nice to have somewhere I’m actually excited to go and visit to train!

Negative experience: The state of this gym is disgusting. The gym floor and changing rooms are filthy you see cobwebs on the walls, dirty windows, dirty machines, smelly and filthy sauna and steam rooms. The important cardio machines are always broken or out of order and don’t seem to be fixed. Stairmaster has been out of order for months! Me and a handful of members have discussed this and how it affects our workouts. They charge £150+ a month but can’t maintain the gym. Very unhappy.

Negative experience: Really disappointed with the state of this gym. Signed up after seeing snaps of how good the spa looked but the more I went the more I realised how much I am being ripped off. The cleanliness is nothing like what you would expect from a premium spa or gym. Showers are grimy and the changing rooms are dirty , and the “hot” tub is more like room temperature tub. Also, the gym area is decent but they have crammed way too much in a small space, and I am not lying when I tell you machines and equipment are not cleaned at all in this gym. Disappointed to have to leave this review but I have finally woken up to see that I am being ripped off and not getting my moneys worth.

Negative experience: Bloody disgrace! If I could leave a 0 star review I would! I have been a member here since 2006, and I am astonished by the sheer lack of interest in the up-keeping of this gym. Multiple equipment out of use for weeks (stairmaster, treadmills). Horrendous stains on dumbbells and the floor looks like there has been a massive orgy just taken place. Constantly reported to staff who just seem too unbothered to care. Too busy painting their nails and flirting with patrons. The cheek to charge £150+ a month for memberships but can't maintain the cleanliness of a simple gym. Better off investing in a home gym than this shambles. Disgraceful.

Fantastic experience: Having been at David Lloyd now for a couple months I can’t rate it more highly. I’ve had a few PT sessions now with Jack C and he has been amazing, always pushing your body to the maximum. As well as the blaze classes I’ve done, which are so professional and incredibly structured. The gym, spa, classes and swimming are all amazing. Can’t fault it at all.

Fantastic experience: In 2003 I used to walk past David Lloyd because I couldn't afford the bus. I DREAMED of driving in and enjoying the fabulous facilities, the friendly staff, the switched-on people, and the comfortable areas to relax that'd feel just like home from home. 20+ years on, I've been a member for 2 years now, and my mental picture was 100% correct. It gives me a happy when I rock up to the gate most mornings, and in a period of transition and isolation in my life, this place has been a lifeline. The team are always friendly and welcoming, from the front desk to the PTs to the housekeeping staff. Sam stops to chat in the Clubroom, Jirina once gave me a hug when I was having a bad day, and don't get me started on how Jack Claxton has whipped me into shape in the gym - with his boundless energy he's always an infectious joy to be around. I can't tell you how much I love swimming outdoors under the open sky in one of *two* pools - so it's rarely crowded if you pick your moment - and the new spa? Well now you're just spoiling me, people, honestly, that's above and beyond. Soon I'll be moving abroad, and I'm trying to come up with a way to justify keeping my membership for when I come home to see family. I can't bear to leave! You people! Thank you for being so awesome!

Fantastic experience: Been a member for over a year now and I highly rate the place. There’s a really nice atmosphere, good equipment, courts, classes and the spa is just the cherry on the cake. Would recommend if you can get here enough to make the price worthwhile, although considering everything that’s included I actually don’t think the price is too bad.

Negative experience: I have moved house and have been trying for over 2 weeks to cancel my membership via the app and email and phone . I cannot get through and no one answers my messages despite sending references and a response saying they will respond

Negative experience: Leaving a 1 star review because of the level of phones calls they leave you after an enquiry. When you leave an enquiry, you should give 1 return phone call and leave a voicemail, not call every single day repeatedly leaving voicemails! At this point it’s harassment. Not very professional at all
