York Gym - Swift Fitness York

Fantastic experience: I've made a couple of visits to Swift Fitness and was made to feel very welcome as a PAYG guest. It's a clean, very well equipped gym, and reasonably priced, too. The weight training equipment is well maintained and everything operates smoothly. There are plenty of different machines to choose from, covering all body parts, with plenty of overlap between machines to allow some variety. It's been very quiet when I've attended and I've always been able to get on all of the machines I wanted to use. I've not tried any of the classes or been in the studio but have been very happy with the strength and cardio equipment.

Fantastic experience: Been going for a long time and run by a lovely and friendly family Mark, Sue, Marcus and Danny and the dogs as well a brilliant atmosphere gym. Its clean and makes you feel welcome. Keep up the good work as you have been doing for the last ten years

Fantastic experience: I've visited this gym for the Zumba classes and the staff are very friendly and the facilities look very clean and modern. The studio room on the top floor is bright and airy, it's a great space for Zumba. The classes are great value too. Would recommend.

I also had the pleasure of working with Danny, their personal trainers, who is fantastic! He’s knowledgeable, motivating, and really helped me improve my fitness. Fantastic experience: Cannot recommend Swift Fitness enough , I’ve been doing cardio for the last 20 years but since having my PT sessions with Danny he has completely shifted my mindset on fitness and getting stronger . The Gym and the people are fantastic, I’m now enjoying going even though the Hitmill gets me every time!! If you are after a gym that has the best machines, knowledgable people and is central to York then this is the gym for you!

Fantastic experience: Great gym. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and the gym is always clean. It’s also excellently placed just outside the city centre. The Zumba class run by Erika is really fun and she creates a really welcoming environment.

Negative experience: Absolute disgraceful company. No ownership of complaints. Accidentally signed up on their mobile site and then cancelled within minutes but still taking money from my account. Called Swift York who wanted nothing to do with the situation and diverted me to Harlands. Was told by Gavin Hall that he would ensure it was cancelled and yet more money is being taken from my account. Now neither Harlands or Swift York will take ownership. Over £100 paid and I've not even stepped foot in the gym. Now facing paying membership for the year because no one will help.....BEWARE!!!!!!!

Negative experience: Scam artists, I signed up and within a minute cancelled my direct debit, now their finance company Harlands are pestering for payments and claiming that I did not cancel.

Staff are very friendly and always approachable. Never had a bad experience in all my time at this gym. Highly recommend for anybody looking for a gym to go to

Fantastic experience: Absolutely love going to Swift. It's a clean and well equipped family run gym. Staff are very friendly, helpful and they make you feel welcome. Danny's classes are great, they are challenging ,and no two are ever the same. I like that a variety of people (gender, age, fitness level) attend both the gym and the classes, so I never feel uncomfortable. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Fantastic experience: Given that i spend so much time in the gym and take my training seriously it is important that I have an appropriate environment to work in. Swift fitness provides all of this and more... There is sufficient equipment for all forms of training depending on what you enjoy and what your goals are; and the equipment is modern and up to date. The environment is kept clean at all times and is well spaced out between 3 levels. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and are always enthusiastic to discuss training with you; I would always recommend their expertise whenever anyone needs fitness or training advice. Within the gym I often get talking to other members whom I have found all very pleasant and who love training here as much as me, this creates very team positive vibes and just makes it so much more enjoyable to train there! Fully recommend

Negative experience: Ok gym but I had many issues with the finance company taking the payment out before it was due and charging £50 for being 'late' when they tried to take the money early. Staff contacted me trying to help but they never responded after the initial message.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym, family run and friendly. Top quality equipment and Danny was always on hand for advice. Booked a couple of coaching sessions during my time here too that were very helpful with deadlift form. Again, Danny is a great coach. Four happy years at this gym, would highly recommend to anyone looking at gyms in York to think of Swift first. Thanks :)

Negative experience: Before getting into my issue. The gym is clean, generally speaking the staff are very nice and will help you with most of the concerns you have. The gym has nice facilities and variety of people use it. For that it's not a one-star review. If you wish to sign up with them please make sure you know that you wish to attend the gym long term and no future pandemics or lockdowns of any sort are happening. If that happens you best bet is to make sure you have an immense amount of patience and here's why - 1. As the pandemic hit, Swift combined with their payment company, Harlands, decided to keep charging the full price of the membership over the duration of the lockdown. My first point of contact after re-opening was Swift. In my mind they should be able to help, as I signed up in person and they are offering the facilities. I was wrong. They took all liability off their shoulder and I needed to contact Harlands. 2. I went about to contact Harlands. Emailing them to start with. Never received replies. So I waited an hour on a call and got through eventually. They stated they couldn't refund me directly because guess what.. Swift does have responsibility and have to authorize the refund. Great... 3. Waited about 10 working days and nothing. No email confirmation from the previous phone call or money in my bank account. 4. Enquired yet again. This time 7 working days later I got a reply stating that either Swift and Harlands initiated a different solution to my refund enquiry. Let's give me three month free access instead of a refund! Yayyy! (sarcasm). Scumbags. Shady scumbags. That option may have been in the cards if somebody took responsibility of the bat. 5. Looks like the only way to get a refund was to contact Harlands CEO, send Swift emails. At least looks like the email to the CEO evoked some sort of responds. Time will tell even after my countless emails about my refund and membership cancellation if they still charge me. So in conclusion. Sign up for this gym if you know you want to stay and if you do not then Good Luck. Swift will not want to help you or maybe they cant help you. If their case is that they can't help you then god forbid their idiotisy decision of using Harlands as their payment company. Swift has offered no assistance or service in this matter and have showcased an extremely poor customer services and willingness to help. Best bet I am not coming back.

Fantastic experience: Probably the best gym I have ever been to. They have everything you could possibly want equipment wise and the staff are fantastic. Really friendly atmosphere, would recommend for anyone who is unsure of joining.

Fantastic experience: Came here for a pay as you go workout (£7) when staying in York. Friendly gym with great facilities, and lots of cleaning stuff around to ensure it's safe during coronavirus. Great value and may well come again!

Fantastic experience: Been going to Swift for just over three years now. New to the gym when I started and all the family wer very kind and welcoming. Helped me learn how to use the machines and even helped with work out suggestions. 3 years on and I go to two classes a week now, really friendly and for all abilities. Would highly recommend this gym and the classes!

Fantastic experience: Joined up quite late and it's a great atmosphere, always clean and equipment always working, ladies changing room is quite big with showers, and a sun room, would recommend if your not a confident gym goer and everyone keeps themselves to themselves and gets on with it, loads of lockers to and always clean, would deffaintly recommend , helpful and polite staff and humorous to.

Ok I’ve seen a few people have had issues with harlands (the people who look after the memberships) I’ve had the same but doesn’t take away anything from the gym and staff! Chilled, honest and comfortable place to work out and reach your goals!!!!

Fantastic experience: Swift fitness is the best gym I’ve been to in York, the staff are friendly, helpful and do whatever they can to make your experience at their gym the best it can possibly be. The gym equipment is mostly hammer strength and if you’re not into lifting weights there is plenty of cardio machines upstairs, from rowing machines to a Ski Erg which is the first time I’ve seen one at a gym! Recently I had a problem with my membership and Marcus was more then helpful, with sorting it out! If you don’t believe me go there try it for week and you’ll see what I’m talking about, while you’re there try out one the HIIT workouts that are on the wipe board!

Fantastic experience: I walked into Swift Fitness as a complete novice . I hadn't been in a gym since I was at school (over 40 years ago) but I wanted to try to avoid sagging into old age. I was completely honest about my lack of knowledge, limited time and fairly modest aims but from the start was made to feel welcome. Given my ignorance, I decided to book some sessions with Danny who has approached the challenge with technical know-how, impressive psychological insight and a welcome sense of humour. Much to my surprise I am enjoying getting fitter. People are welcoming and helpful, the gym is very clean and there is plenty of equipment and advice on how to get the best out of it (and the air conditioning is extremely welcome in hot weather.) Overall, a very positive place to spend time.

Lovely people putting in hard work each day. Great atmosphere, facilities are solid too, full hammer strength weights and machines on the ground floor, cardio on the first with more weight machines and a studio at the top hosting classes!

Fantastic experience: I am so happy a picked Swift Fitness! I find everyone, staff and other members to be down to earth folks. I was reluctant to join a gym in fear of being uncomfortable - out of my element. I found the facility clean, friendly and inspiring. Danny rocks as far as his patience and giving the boost I need to keep going. Danny takes into account ones personal requirements whilst giving the extra push to give 101% - I am positive if I keep up the discipline of getting into routine, I will become confident and motivated to keep fitness in check and foremost gain my life back. God willing and the creek don't rise - I will take control of of my health and fitness, and master (not fear) the lower body "kit"!

Fantastic experience: While I loved my previous gym and found moving really hard (moved because of location) I am now really glad I did!! Excellent facilities both cardio and weights machines/free weights - and the absolutely terrifying HIIT mill! I have been a member, along with my husband for nearly a year now and have always found the staff so lovely and helpful, the gym clean and the atmosphere great as well. I recently also took up PT sessions with Danny at the gym in order to rebuild my strength after a period of illness - I could not recommend him more! I have never had a PT before but this has really helped me structure my training in a way that is appropriate for me, allowing me to push myself but also to recover well too. Danny has been a great facilitator in this, really listening to my individual needs and not jumping to conclusions about my goals (as I have previously encountered with instructors in some gyms). It is amazing to be feeling stronger again, and I feel like I am back on my way to my niece's declaration that I have "arms like daddy" :D

Fantastic experience: Really good family run gym the weights are brilliant got everything and more that you need.the cardio room again has everything from tredmills stairmaster arc trainer to the rowing and ski machines and a new addition that not many gyms have is the hiit mill all great for any goals you have. The staff very friendly and helpful when needed.the gym floor and machines toilets and sunbeds are kept very clean. There are showers and plenty of lockers for your belongings. I've just recently upped my membership and had a bit of trouble with the company they use harlands they took two payments out due to my upgrade in membership but I spoke to the guys at the gym and were very helpful and sorted it within two days. Would very much recommend this gym great atmosphere it's good prices and close to town which is ideal if your staying from out of town.

Positive experience: Update: Was told that after my 6 month membership offer as a student ends, I would still be charged a monthly on a new basis by the Harlands group. Of all people to work with, I just cannot understand why Swift Fitness would choose to work with the least competent company of them all. Such a disappointment and hassle to get things sorted out when it should've just ended my membership after the 6th month, not suddenly renew it with an even more expensive membership price. To be honest, I should've come to this gym instead of the York Sport Uni gym. This gym fits my training style better and it's not crowded with obnoxious students who don't take care of the weights. You can bench here and the dumb bells go up to more than 50kg. Squats and reads are also possible with the equipment provided and the staff are generally pretty chilled.

Negative experience: Good gym however payments and any payment related queries go through a dreadful company. Look up "Harlands Group" before signing up to this gym and you can make your own mind up. I won't be renewing my membership.

Negative experience: Defintely not the friendly gym they claim to be. After an incident occurred in the gym when a fellow member (who happened to be talking to the owners at the time) came over to me angrily and proceeded to tell me off in front of other members for placing a 5kg weight on the floor as i de racked a bar!!!!!! I was made to feel so stupid all I could do was walk out upset. After making the management aware of this over an email and requesting to cancel my membership they chose to ignore my request and offered to talk to me when I next came in the gym, how they even expected me to enter the gym again after being humiliated is beyond me!!!!! Terrible terrible service and certainly not the best gym in York as they claim to be!!!! After 6 months of trying to resolve the membership I am now having to pay out to clear the remaining balance! Disgusting service!

Negative experience: I received very poor customer service from Swift and Harlands regarding a cancelled direct debit due to moving abroad - which is in their terms & conditions about leaving a contract early. I tried to contact Swift multiple times and eventually got back to me only once telling me to speak to Harlands - Why would I speak to Harlands about cancelling a direct debit when I attend the Swift gym... I was supposed to be returning to Swift after moving back to England but due to the poor customer service I received there won't be a chance of that, I shall go elsewhere. The same problem happened to two of my friends who both now attend different gyms. In the end I ended up paying a hefty fine of £200+ simply for following the terms and conditions of the contract. Do not recommend.

Positive experience: Good range of equipment, plenty of machines (never had to wait for a treadmill). Membership is a bit pricey compared to the gym I used to go to (in Hatfield), but you can pay as you go - works out cheaper unless you are going at least twice a week. Staff friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience: Would highly recommend this gym. I've been attending both spin classes which are far better than any other I've been to the reason being they have a fantastic twist to them not only do you get a great spin work out but also you get to do some great boxing moves in between since starting in November I feel amazing and have toned up the areas I wanted . I also do insanity and the boxacise and have just become a member for the classes. Check it out for yourself I'm sure it won't dissapoint.

All the floors offer different types of gymnastic apparatus which are regularly checked, cleaned and maintained.
