Ebor Fitness

Fantastic experience: Have been using Ebor this week whilst in the city on holiday, visiting early morning to get my training in. A whole lot of kit packed into a small but perfectly formed space, geared primarily to strength training but with a reasonable selection of cardio machines. Equipment is of various ages but everything I wanted to use was in good nick, save for the rowing machine which has seen better days and needs its sensor replacing. Clientele mainly blokes but of varying ages and builds - I'm not exactly massive but did not feel out of place. Staff friendly. Day pass and weekly membership prices for those of us just visiting were reasonable. Gents changing room and showers, upstairs on the first floor, were nice and clean, which is always the main thing, but the main door opens straight out onto the stairwell (from which most of the room is visible) and the doors to the shower stalls are just inside said changing room entrance. You therefore need, unless you're possessed of a devil may care attitude to nudity, to be very careful not to flash passers by, bearing in mind that the ladies' facilities are located a little further down the landing. The showers themselves need a little maintenance: the first one I tried was basically a tap rather than a spray; the second had no time delay on the push button which meant it had to be held down continuously to work - a manageable nuisance whilst you're facing it, but resulting in contortions when you're wanting to give your back and arse a proper wash. The gripes aside, however, a good, clean and well equipped gym which seems to be run and used by the right kind of people. Would give 4.5 stars if the rating were available.

Negative experience: Just been woken up by a class outside this gym shouting at 6am. Unbelievable lack of respect for anyone else, don't care how fancy their machines are or who the clients are.

Fantastic experience: The gym is great, well equipped and a great place to work out. I am a 40 something man who was stuck in a rut, overweight, not as fit as I was, just plodding along. I needed a change, I took the 30 day challenge Adam Endersby was my trainer. I've lost 4kg in the 30 days, rediscovered my love of the gym, am eating better, sleeping better. If you're stuck in a rut and want to to make a change look no further - as Adam says invest in yourself and you'll see the rewards.

Fantastic experience: Very good value for money gym for students. Staff seem keen to help less experienced members if the member asks and it's quiet. The gym is relatively small though which comes with downsides. Not enough to remove a star but worth considering. There's no room for any calisthenics equipment, boxing bags, dedicated hip thruster, large cardio section. The gym utilises the space it has to the maximum for the key pieces of kit. So if you're used to a larger gym then make sure you look around and are happy you can do everything you'd want to with what's going. Ticks all my boxes, only piece of kit i miss is the bars from my old gym that let me train a flagpole and dragon flag for core. Other than that Ebor's thought out their kit with purpose and you can hit every muscle in numerous ways if you know what you're doing. Great gym. Easy 5 stars

Fantastic experience: This has always been my go to gym gym the york area. Great equipment all hammer strength, 3 stairmasters, 2 power racks, a deadlift platform.and free weohht up to 75kg. Staff are great, always helpful and great people to be around. Very variable members cohort, I've made some great friends here. Wouldn't train anywhere else in york.

Fantastic experience: Have been a member of this gym since lockdown. I tend to visit early mornings but have also visited on a lunchtime midweek or evenings. Can typically get on the equipment you want. There’s a lot of PT’s around if you want to enquire about their services and the gym team are helpful too. Lockers by the door (bring your own padlock though) and some in the changing rooms upstairs. There’s a couple of showers there and also some more lockers and benches. Ample parking outside and a few bike racks too. Good selection for cardio and weights equipment. Like the vibe in the gym, a few friendly faces around, a good mix of confident weightlifters, blokes with dad bods (me!), students and ladies too. Nobody should feel out of place.

Fantastic experience: I started at Ebor on the 6 week kick start programme and found the whole experience did exactly that - it kickstarted me back on my health and fitness journey. Since completing I have signed up for a membership and still train regularly. It’s a smaller than average gym so can get busy but everyone is very friendly and people respect each others space.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic gym in every way. Been training since I was 17 so 41 years now and have been around the block with all the old proper gyms in York that sadly all now closed, but one silver lining is that without a shadow of a doubt Ebor fitness would rank no1 over all of them, the people that are behind Ebor are so kind and friendly and it feels like I've known them for ages after only four months of been here, a really pleasant atmosphere surrounds the place. It cannot be just me who knows a good thing when they see it, a load of my buddy's from the other gyms are training here so back to the old leg pulling and pranks as well as serious training . Beautiful old buildings and equipment second to none what more could you want ? Thank you Ebor for getting me back on track.

Positive experience: Been a member previous and its a lovely gym with everything you need. The only issue is it's on the small side, so when it gets busy you do struggle to fit in what you want to do.

Fantastic experience: Good equipment, decent price, friendly staff and the customers tend to be reasonably helpful as well. It is small so it can feel pretty busy sometimes, but it's not the end of the world.

Fantastic experience: I went to York on holiday and Ebor was close to my Guest House. I went every morning while I was in town. Great range of equipment, well kept, it's very clean and the people are so friendly and welcoming! I met Pauline, she's the owner's mum and works at the Gym, she was absolutely delightful, we had a bit of a chat and made me feel right at home. I can't wait to go back. Thank you for everything!

Fantastic experience: Staff are all brilliant, great selection of machines, and great price. Most importantly for me, the atmosphere is fantastic. I didn't get on well with the atmosphere at the sports village, ebor feels way more motivated. I'm an incredibly weedy guy (for now!) but never feel unwelcome, and I see people of all shapes and sizes working out and vibing with other gym goers. Great place.

Fantastic experience: Been going to Ebor Gym the last couple months since relocating to York. This has been a good decision and very satisfied with the overall experience. Staff welcoming and helpful. Equipment of a good standard. Positive atmosphere with those using the gym sensible about use of equipment and happily share with others. Thankfully not for aimed at posers but a gym that has good opening hours, equipment and motivating vibes. Place to go if looking for results. Oh and I enjoy the music so that's a bonus! Keep up the good work.

Fantastic experience: My go to gym when I stay in York. The staff are brilliant, really friendly and helpful, and know what they are doing! It's got everything you need from a gym and the members are great too. I dropped my water bottle from the stairmaster once and a guy picked it up for me and said it's a mare to get off the machine and back on again. I really appreciated that! The changing rooms are great and it's open all the hours to cater for pretty much any schedule. Highly recommend. Definitely the place to get fit in York.

Fantastic experience: Been going to this gym for over 6 months and found that all the staff are very polite greeting me every time I walk in. Impeccable service, the equipment is amazing as are are the staff. Can always rely on good music and an positive atmosphere. Couldn’t recommend a better gym.

Negative experience: ****UPDATE - The company who I have the contract with have seen the evidence and agreed to cancel my membership with immediate effect so I do not have to pay for the membership or cancellation period. The owner is incorrect in stating that I am having to pay the membership as I am not* *** I joined up the beginning of January. The music on the day I signed was at a reasonable level. It always is when the young lad is working. Its the rest of the time it's appalling. I tried to canx today as it became apparent that it isn't a suitable gym for my needs and not what I signed up for. The lady on reception is rude and unfriendly. 3 times at least I said hello to her on entry and she ignored me each time. Ashbourne didn't send my joining details when I signed up so for the first week I was stopped everytime and told that I was coming in without paying. I was told at one point to go and get my confirmation e mail off my phone which was in the car! Embarassing and rude as I had signed up and paid in good faith. No apology from them when they finally got my joining details through. I had to keep explaining I'd paid on my debit card like THEY had asked me to! 3 out of the 4 treadmills don't work properly Each of them I have been on the incline and it has just stopped working. The 4th one works fine. As all my training is done on incline, it isn't acceptable to have only 1 machine functioning properly. The noise of the music is too loud for me. I have noise intolerance and the noise level is ridiculously high. If I had known this was the usual music level when I joined, I would not have joined. The loud speaker is right behind the treadmills so it's worse there. It was so loud today that I had to ask the same woman on reception to turn it down. She did then it had gone back up again by the time I got back to the treadmill! I asked to canx my membership at this point due to the noise being too much for me and the lack of treadmills not working properly. She said she couldn't canx but message "Stuart" who is a "reasonable" person and "will be able to sort the membership out for you". I messaged Stuart a nice message explaining my problems and recieved a really rude and dismissive message back. Basically the music sound level is absolutely fine because he's OK with it, the treadmills are all working fine (trust me, they are not!) and I'm threatening him because I said I would write a fair review of my experiences. I will still have to pay for a month even though the gym is not providing the equipment I signed up for. I said I was happy to pay until the 9th February even though I can't use the facilities properly. He then blocked me on Facebook so I couldn't reply or leave a review of my experiences. Clever but not clever enough! Considering this gym has very old and outdated equipment (I used to be a gym manager and we were using this particular piece of life fitness treadmill in at least 2004 of not even the year earlier) and is competing against a whole raft of brand new gyms in york, this response beggers belief and astounds over something as little as 30 quid. Unfortunately I can't let that 30 quid go as I need it to pay for a new gym where I can use the facilities and I can't afford to pay for 2 gyms in a month, one with suitable facilities and this one that doesn't. Just appalling, absolutely appalling. I was trying to find a nice gym as I suffer from extreme social anxiety and they have just been nasty on every level. Unwelcoming and now this. I was a gym manager and fitness instructor and membership sales advisor for nearly 15 years and I would have never treated a member like that. If they had a genuine reason to canx like this, I would have let them do it. I'm more than happy to pay for a membership during a canx period, I'm not happy to pay for it due to equipment that doesn't work and sound levels that are not appropriate for someone with noise intolerance therefore rendering the service unusable.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym and decent range of equipment. The staff know what they are doing and are generally quite friendly. They are also very good with supplements and have a range of them available at the counter. Went there for a few weeks while staying in York and I really enjoyed my workouts there.

Fantastic experience: Its compact but its decent. Hammer strength machines. I've been in hundreds of gyms and I can honestly say it had the cleanest changing rooms I've ever seen. Normally having a shower in a gym is not that pleasant in ebor fitness it was like being at home!

Fantastic experience: I've been training at ebor fitness for the last 6/7 years. I'd tried energise (over priced at £60 a month) and never really found either value for money or, a friendly encouraging environment to train in. Everything from the equipment, which has gone from good to better over the years with recent additions, to the staff have been spot on. There's a day coming where I'll be moving away from York and the saddest thing about that is not being able to train here every other day. If you're after training somewhere proper, without gimmicks and inclusive of all ages and sizes Ebors the place for you.

Fantastic experience: The staff are always helpful, it has fantastically long opening hours, and there are no distractions.

Positive experience: Has pretty much everything you'd like in a commercial gym. My only issue is that it doesn't really have a place to do jump rope, especially when it gets busy. Students have a chance at getting a promotion price of £180 a year.

Positive experience: As a student whose gym routine mainly revolves around weights, Ebor is a great value! Staff are very pleasant and helpful too. It's almost the perfect gym for me. It'd be a full 5-stars if they had a water fountain for filling up drinks and a bigger area for core/floor work. For people who are more interested in cardio, there is some steppers, some treadmills, some elliptical trainers, some rowing machines and some bikes. But not a lot of each. It's definitely more for weights.

Fantastic experience: This is a fantastic gym, a proper gym with some great equipment. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The gym is set in a lovely characterful old building which I feel adds to the experience. I’m fed up of the mass produced generic gyms with equipment chosen by someone who sits in an office. They have those where I live so it was refreshing stumbling upon this little gem. Just wish we had one like this back in Wales where we live. Also we were able to use the showers as we had been travelling in our motor home it was great to have a power shower. And they had good hair dryers and even straighteners Thank you we shall pop in for a workout next time we visit beautiful York.

Fantastic experience: 1st time here today coming all the way from Essex for a holiday and wanting to use a gym locally. Greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed myself and son in, we brought a day workout! £5 each. Good gym, clean and equipped for what we needed. A good workout was had and with lovely staff. Thank you for today, we will be back ! If it was local to us it would be a good gym with everything you need. Thank you !

Fantastic experience: Before I started coming here in around August in 2017, I had a lack of confidence as it was something new to me and I had been used to running and working out at home or somewhere else. However, after my first day, the staff were polite and very welcoming. Because of this, it had built my confidence up and so I came here during mid August, 2017 for about an hour and a half a week and lost 10lbs by the beginning of September, considering all I did were weights, treadmill running, and the moving stairs. This shows that I had enjoyed working out then and I enjoyed keeping my fitness up in this gym. Definitely a recommendation. Can't wait to find the chance to make a return.
