Northcote Manor Hotel & Spa

Fantastic experience: It's a little hidden gem in North Devon. What makes it particularly attractive is not the amenities, fantastic spa or exquisite cuisine, but the people who work there. The team of Northcote Manor is a rare nowadays combination of efficiency, professionalism, individuality and friendliness. We felt welcomed and relaxed and spent fantastic 3 nights there. Many thanks to everyone who contribute in making this place so special!

Fantastic experience: Excellent all round. The staff are the difference. Yes the food, location, spa etc are all amazing but the staff have a certain naughtiness about them that is very endearing. Always professional but also totally natural. They seem to be able to judge each guest to perfection to make their stay a thoroughly enjoyable one.

Fantastic experience: Visited the spa for the first time on Saturday with my partner's sister and mum. It was so relaxing! The spa area and changing rooms were very clean and well thought out. We also each had a 30 minute massage. I was booked in with Briony and she was so lovely. I really enjoyed my treatment with her! Our cream teas were tasty and I was impressed they did a vegan scone with dairy free butter! Will definitely visit again some time. Thank you!

Fantastic experience: Just back from a wonderful stay at Northcote Manor. I needed to relax and it was truly the most relaxing and peaceful hotel experience. The location and building are stunning and the silence and birdsong were beautiful. The service was excellent and so friendly and the food was a joy. The rooms are what some might call a bit retro but I loved our suite (the Tavistock) and yes the shower goes a bit hot and cold now and again, but this is an old building and didn't detract. And I loved the fact everything was so clean. The lovely spa and treatments added to the relaxation and the terrace view is the best I've experienced at a spa. In the sea of bland, corporate, overly commercialised hotels which exists today, the Northcote stands out as still having heart and soul. Will definitely be back.

Fantastic experience: A slightly faded country house hotel. If you're looking for a peaceful retreat, this could be the place for you. The added bonus is the spa / swimming pool, sauna, steam room & and jacuzzi, which you can use. Outside decked area with views of hills & valleys great place to have a drink. Wonderful food, attentive staff. Hotel just needs a little sprucing up, but you need to look beyond that & just enjoy it.

Negative experience: Remote shabby chic-ish converted country home boutique hotel and spa. Our room hadn’t been updated for at least 20 years. Bed was laughably sprung and toilet didn’t work despite manager’s best efforts. On the other hand, food was very good and staff were cheery and helpful. Spa was newer and offered an outstanding view of countryside.

Fantastic experience: Im not one to leave reviews but i was so impressed with our visit. I took my sister here for a 40th birthday treat. What a wonderful place! Set in beautiful grounds, it boasts a stunning countryside view that takes your breath away. An idyllic location. Reception staff were freindly and welcoming. The spa was clean, comfortable and well maintained. Great selection of gym equipment. The spa treatments we all received were amazing. I had an incredible facial treatment and the technician went above and beyond to make it a relaxing experience. She even kept her breathing quiet and her voice calm. We went over to the main house for our meal which was the nicest meal I have ever had. They even picked up on my sisters birthday and covered our table in birthday and 40 confetti. These little added touches really made the whole experience something we will never forget and will absolutely return and recommend to everyone we know. Thank you for such a lovely day.

Fantastic experience: Spent a wonderful afternoon at the hotel. Superb lunch, in a beautiful dining room. Highly recommend! We had a treatment each afterwards, at the spa. The whole team were professional and enthusiastic. Thanks especially to Erin, our therapist, and to a young waiter whose name I missed but who made us feel so welcome. The location, ambiance and food at this hotel make it well worth a journey.

Fantastic experience: Fabulous overnight stay with tasting menu and wine flyte. Rooms were beautifully decorated, each with it's individual style. Some lovely little touches in the room, homemade shortbread, mints, apples and tea/coffee making facilities. Gourmet dinner was superb and we were very well looked after.

Fantastic experience: Very good Sunday lunch, shame that there were only one other group in the restaurant. Service very good until they all dissapeared, had to hunt someone down to pay. My friend in her 80's thought the Chocolate desert was the best she had ever eaten, and she is an expert on Chocolate deserts.

Fantastic experience: Fabulous place to stay and would definitely stay here again. Staff are incredibly attentive and helpful. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble. Rooms and hotel are very nice, but are showing a few signs of wear and tear, but nothing major. The grounds are nice to walk around and peaceful. Food was gorgeous, never had a bad meal.

Positive experience: We had our wedding there in 2007, and sadly the gardens didn't quite have the charm they used to. The wooden bridge is now gone, and there were less blooming flowers (this may have been due to the weird summer weather of 2023). Staff were attentive and friendly, and the cooked breakfast was excellent. The new addition of the spa was lovely and a wonderful feature that we, as guests, were allowed to use. Had to argue with the manager though as the price quoted on the phone was not what we were initially charged. The manager said "I don't like to argue with guests..." If so, don't do it. Took the shine off a good stay and wanted to leave quickly due to the hostility of it all. Otherwise, it's absolutely lovely, if kept in an odd time warp circa 2007. The room was well appointed, and room service topped up the biscuits, apples and water too which was a kind and thoughtful touch. Would visit again.

Fantastic experience: Ok we went here for dinner whilst house sitting for our daughter. Menu choice was good and the food great. If I tried to find fault it would be the cheese selection was not very exciting but the Chutney made up for that. Looking forward to going back in the near future

Fantastic experience: Excellent service, this is a very old house with steps between lower rooms, Richie worked with us and accommodates us with a wheelchair as well as could be expected. The food was fantastic. Spa views were awesome. A real hidden gem of a hotel with a fantastic team of dedicated staff. A great team work along with personal service, once again an oasis of tranquility!!

Positive experience: We arrived 30minutes late owing to road works and the SatNav taking us around in circals, tried to phone but had no reception, and ended up knocking on doors for directions. When we did eventually arrive for an afternoon tea and cakes, totally worn out, we were met with a less than hospitable reception, tried to explain why we were late, only to be told "well your here now sit down and and your afternoon tea will be arranged". The food was good, no complaints there, but we were just left with no further assistence from any staff member, had our afternoon tea, got up and left, no staff around to thank or complain too. The grounds are lovely and that's about all I can say. I certainly would not go back or encourage any friends to visit.

Fantastic experience: I was treated by my mum to a spa day together at Northcote Manor, we had a lovely relaxing day. The hotel and spa are located in very peaceful countryside with beautiful views. The ladies in the spa were all fantastic, we both really enjoyed our treatments by the lovely Lauren. There is a lovely veranda to sit out in the sunshine and enjoy the views across the rolling hills, it’s quite the little sun trap! We enjoyed our lunch out here and cream tea. The cream tea was fantastic and really good value for money, they kindly swapped the tea/coffee for soft drinks for us. There is unfortunately no decaf option for coffee, this is something I would suggest they look into putting in place. We both look forward to visiting again and perhaps next time we will book an overnight stay too! We weren’t rushed at all once our spa day had finished, we enjoyed our cream tea out on the veranda afterwards and could leave at our leisure, which meant we were able to miss any rush hour traffic.

Fantastic experience: Booked a mini spa day at the spa facility adjacent to the hotel. Lovey pool, hot tub and steam room and friendly staff. Part of the package included a cream tea and 30 minute massage. The cream tea was lovely and the massage physio was great. Thanks!

Positive experience: Had afternoon tea with family. Can't comment on the rooms, but the food and service were great. Lovely, quiet location but a little difficult to find.

Fantastic experience: This beautiful place with its excellent food and friendly, helpful, courteous staff, made for a very relaxing place to stay whilst we explored the West Country. We visited the spar every day and very much enjoyed the pool, steam room and sauna- no energy left for the gym I’m afraid!

Fantastic experience: Well appointed in a beautiful setting. Very friendly, enthusiastic service. Food at dinner excellent but cooked breakfasts only average. Dining room service top class. Unfortunately the hotel is on a hill and walking the grounds was a bit beyond our aged legs. Take care on the hotel drive, it's narrow and steep. Plenty of things to do in the local area.

Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful spa day here with a friend on Monday. The spa is adjacent to the hotel. Treatments were heavenly, and staff were friendly and professional. A wonderfully relaxing treat. Will definately be booking again in the near future.

Positive experience: We went to the spa with my daughter who has mobility issues, very good but could be improved by putting in a rail where you walk in to the pool this would of saved my daughter a lot of struggling to get out

Positive experience: Went for four course dinner. Cheese board bland and disappointing. Canapes were boring and main course was average. The starters and sweet were excellent as expected for the money and reputation. Service was fantastic. Surrounds interesting but loads of potholes in driveway and parking.

Positive experience: Lovely overnight stay at this quirky hotel. Spa area is really nice and relaxing, breakfast was very good and evening meal was exceptional. Just a bit worn and tired in places (bathroom very dated, etc) and not as clean as it could be, hence the four stars!

Positive experience: We had a spa day here (I've been before) and as usual we had a lovely time. Sadly at the end of the day, I caught my finger in the heavy towel slot. I didn't make a fuss at the time (this happened to a companion on our last visit too) but the finger is heavily bruised so I thought that I would email them suggesting they put a handle on it before someone has a more serious injury. I have had an email response. They will be putting up a sign to warn others.

Staff proud of their excellent standards. They treated everyone beautifully , I was amazed...We had so many little treats and surprises added to our meal , extra bites to sample and in our room . After dinner mints in a pretty tin on the shelf and homemade shortbread biscuits in another pretty tin..The house was well maintained with interesting taste and decor. Importantly lovely fresh crisp clean sheets and pillow's were fresh and bed very comfortable. The grounds were lovely to walk through a lovely place away from all the hustle and bustle to truly relax and enjoy.... Enjoyed using the lovely new Spa too...A big thank you to everyone

Fantastic experience: We went for a spa day. The facilities were beautiful and nothing was too much trouble for the staff! We had the most beautiful cream tea! The spa therapists were friendly, chatty and this made a first time facial much more relaxing! I would reccomend Northecote manor spa!

Fantastic experience: We had a fabulous night's stay with the spa mini break deal for my husband's 50th. The location is stunning, the treatments divine and dinner was delicious. All the staff were fantastic, especially Abbey who looked after us from arrival. Would highly recommend for a peaceful and fully relaxing break.

Fantastic experience: We stayed here last week for a 2 night midweek break. Beautiful and peaceful location surrounded in 25 acres and amazing views from the spa pool. We used the spa pool both evenings which was very relaxing after a day out . The staff were very charming, friendly and professional. We had dinner both evenings which were delicious and the breakfast set us up for the day. Very comfy and clean room. We would definitely stay again.

Positive experience: The building is lovely, the grounds are extensive but could do with some work on flower beds. The public rooms are nicely decorated, with attractive glassware dotted about. Our room overlooked the garden which was nice however it was badly in need of an update and redecoration. The edging and tie backs on the curtains were in a very sorry state. The bathroom was clean but small,which would be acceptable if again it was updated. The shower temperature was difficult to adjust as there is no thermostat. Breakfast was disappointing, my husband ordered the cheese and ham croissant and it was tiny, a mini croissant rather than normal size! I ordered toast which was very nice but I was surprised to only receive one slice. More was supplied on request. Dinner was acceptable but surprisingly lacking in flavour, the menu sounded better than what was actually served. We ordered a cup of tea on arrival and the next day when we paid our bill we were a little surprised to see we had been charged for the 2 biscuits that came with it. All in all sadly l don't think we will be returning.

I have had a wonderful few hours 'unplugged' from the real world. Highly recommend Mollie for an expert therapist, who goes that extra mile. I just had the most divine facial & hot stone massage. Positive experience: Whilst the spa itself is lovely, as are the staff, I couldn't get over the fact it wasn't clean. It was clear the floors hadn't been cleaned for at least today thoughout (with exception of the treatment room). The pool has a scum ring round it which is particularly visible on the white water outlets down one side. The steam room was dirty on the floor/seat/walls and the thought of the steam dripping that dirt on me from the ceiling made me feel icky. It is extremely slippy when the tile on the floor is wet with only a few mats down to prevent slips, yes you have signs on the doors but this doesn't stop it being slippy - you only need to look at how the clientele walk round the pool to see its an issue. Towels were pretty scratchy for use at the spa. The rail around the jacuzzi is loose which could be of concern and perhaps a rail for the less able bodied to get in and out of the pool may be considered. The treatment was lovely, therapist really nice, as were all the staff we interacted with and food is good as always. I really hope this was just an off day cleanliness wise, haven't noticed on previous visits but sadly this did impact our enjoyment of the day which was for a special occasion and would make us think twice about coming back

Fantastic experience: We dined here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We chose to have private dining in the Oak Room. From the moment we arrived we, and our four small dogs, could not have been made more welcome. This is hospitality and service defined and equal praise must also go the the excellence of the Chefs as the food was exquisite. Sadly, at more than six hours drive away, we will not be able to visit regularly but we will be back on our very next visit to Devon.

Fantastic experience: We really enjoyed our recent break at Northcote Manor. All the staff were welcoming, professional and friendly. The service was excellent, the food and wine wonderful. The spa facility is a great space with lovely views across the countryside and the treatments I had were super. I would have to say however that whilst we enjoyed the pool, the poolside temperature was rather hot and too uncomfortable for me to sit and read. Our room, Ashreigney, was small and comfortable but tired looking and would benefit from redecoration. We hope to return for another relaxing stay.

Fantastic experience: We had a two night break, including a 6 course gourmet dinner. This was our fifth time staying in this superb country hotel. The breakfast and dinner were generally superb, two minor points; the Baked Alaska, part of the gourmet dinner, was disappointing as the meringue lacked substance, the sharing cheese course was the same size as a single portion and still quite small. The pool and spa was first class. Plenty to see and do within a 15 mile radius. We would definitely return.

The stay was really relaxing and the food was delicious, our spa treatments were lovely and the spa facilities were very good. Would recommend if you want a relaxing break that has a lovely vibe and is run by lovely staff. Mitch and Abby were great!

Positive experience: Stunning. Me and my girlfriend stayed in Northcote Manor for just the night on the 3rd Jan, 22 for her birthday. Firstly, the 3pm check in (bit late for me personally) was a very warm welcome to an exquisite Manor House with a perfectly sized room, with a more contemporary decor to the photos on the website. Everything very clean and comfy. With full access to the spa, we took full advantage and saw night fall in a dreamy room with an 180 degree view of the gorgeous natural surroundings of North Devon. We were the only two at one point which was lush. Dinner was an bizarre experience. The attendance of staff couldn’t be faulted in the slightest - very friendly and helpful - however it was hard to be with only two couples in the dining room. There was awkward silence at times. My girlfriend found the food outstanding, I would agree if I had chosen the same as her I’m sure (Pork belly, Venison and soufflé). Would recommend booking in a busier time. We revisited the spa in the morning and checked out for 11am. Overall an amazing experience and will definitely be returning at some point. Thank you to all the amazing staff!

Fantastic experience: Very nice, enjoy my stay for to days, the only one thing to say is that the swimming pool area needs more rubber mats so you don't slip on the wet floors, but other wise really enjoy it and it was lovely and clean place, staff were very nice and made us welcome

Fantastic experience: Lovely remote setting. Old building full of character. Spa was amazing and terrace overlooking the valley had fantastic views. Dinner was good. Portion sizes sligtly small but with canapies and extras served I was happy by the end of the meal. Staff very friendly. This was my first stay away since the pandemic started and felt entirely safe. Staff take covid safety measures seriously. Would I go back - most definetly.
