Many reviews highlight the helpful and accommodating staff, ensuring a warm welcome and assistance for everyone.
Here are some of the standout features:
- Variety of Climbing Routes: With regularly reset routes and challenges for all abilities, climbers can always find something new to tackle.
- Welcoming Environment: The sense of community here is palpable. Many users report a friendly vibe, making it a comfortable place to climb and socialize.
- Great Facilities: The bouldering wall is modern and well-maintained, with good lighting and a clean environment. The café offers delicious snacks and drinks, perfect for recharging after a climb.
- Informative Classes: Our experienced instructors provide clear guidance and tailored coaching, helping climbers improve their skills in a supportive environment.
- Accessible Location: Easily reachable with parking options available, though limited during peak hours.
While the centre is highly praised, some users have noted that it can get quite busy, especially during evenings and weekends, which may lead to longer waiting times for climbing spots. Additionally, a few voices expressed concerns about the frequency of route resets and facilities availability, such as gender-neutral toilets and the café's opening hours.
Despite these minor drawbacks, many visitors express their love for the place and commend the community spirit facilitated by the friendly staff. If you're looking for a fun and engaging climbing experience, The Climbing Hangar Exeter is a perfect choice!

The Climbing Hangar Exeter: Opinions
Fantastic experience: lovely staff and super helpful. Got an injury and were super accommodating and professional.
Fantastic experience: Bloody lovely place
Positive experience: Edit: To be fair, I thought Derricks review was class, and fair. Seeing as I like the place in general, just not the business, I took his advice. Climbing late morning was a completely different experience. Firstly, I actually got a parking space (whoop) and secondly I had so much time to project the climbs I wanted to. The place felt way more relaxed and was a completely different experience. This level of busy and I really like it here. Just factor this in before you visit, or maybe you are not as miserable as I am and don't mind! I've upped the review by a star which I think reflects my last and present experience by meeting them in the middle. I want to love this place, and for its sole purpose of great climbing it does well. But I just find it's always too busy. There are about 10 car parking slots, of which I have managed to get one once in over a year of going. You often have to queue up for a spot to climb and the moment you touch a hold there is a feeling of impatience from everybody around you - the moment you're off, they are on within a second. This next point may be unique to me and the people I know who have also been, but I feel the people who go to the Exeter climbing hangar are usually students, but have this elitist feel to them. The sense of camaraderie that you get in other gyms isn't here, instead it's the youthful ignorance and egotism that reigns supreme. Other gyms, even the other Climbing Hangar in Plymouth, have a way more relaxed, communal vibe that encourages growth as opposed to pure competition. Obviously, there's very little TCH can do about this, but it spoils the place for me. I will continue to go from time to time as the quality of the climbing routes is very good and this is my closest gym, but will always go to other gyms if they are an option and would prefer to drive an hour and a half to Plymouth instead, whenever I have time. Like all climbing hangars however, the food and coffee are great and the staff are decent. I just feel this one has out done itself and become a little too popular. I would love to see a rival company open shop near by.
Hi Lee, My name is Derrick, and I am the General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about our gym. I appreciate your feedback and understand your concerns about the busyness and the atmosphere during peak times. I also climb at our Plymouth location and have noticed the differences in the vibes between the two gyms. Since you visited on a Sunday, I want to highlight that our weekday mornings and afternoons tend to have a much more relaxed crowd compared to the student-heavy evenings. I hope you can join us again during those times to experience the wider community we have here. We’re glad to hear you enjoy the quality of our climbing routes, as well as the food and coffee. Your continued support means a lot to us, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Derrick Wong General Manager, The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Positive experience: Used to be 5 star but things have slipped, routes resets aren’t as comprehensive or frequent as they used to be. Shutting down areas and even the whole centre for a comp is shitty when you pay a membership and can’t use the centre on a Saturday. Also shutting the changing rooms 45 mins before closing is really bad form
Thank you for your feedback. I’m Derrick, the General Manager of TCH Exeter. I wanted to clarify that we close the upstairs toilets for cleaning, but the downstairs toilets remain available for our customers to use. We’ll certainly consider your suggestion about this in the future. Regarding the setting schedule, it remains unchanged; we still update one wall per week. The event you mentioned is an annual occurrence, and I want to assure you that we do not close the entire centre for full days on weekends. We appreciate your understanding and hope to continue improving your experience at TCH Exeter. Derrick Wong General Manager
Fantastic experience: People who work there are so nice. The facilities are great and the overall atmosphere is really nice.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities especially for beginners, all the kit you need is available and included in the cost. Staff are super friendly and it’s a welcoming environment.
Thank you for your kind words, we hope to see you on our walls again in the near future. Derrick Wong General Manager, TCH Exeter
Fantastic experience: I've been going on and off since January and it's a really welcoming atmosphere. Great variety of climbs, informative classes and good food and drinks. Only small issue is there's currently no gender neutral toilets available as they seem to be undergoing maintenance, but everything else is fantastic.
Fantastic experience: Lots of great folks just hanging around. Great smoothies! Although they do say you should blend your veggies and eat whole fruit. Have the green one. Social climbing isn't what I thought it was! Pop down and say high!
Hey Nigel, Glad to hear you like our smoothies and climbing! Hope to see you again on our walls in the near future. Best, Derrick - GM of TCH Exeter
Fantastic experience: Regular wall resets, helpful and friendly staff and well stocked shop with a great cafe. Would recommend!
Thanks so much for your kind words. We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed our wall resets, found our staff helpful and friendly, and appreciated our well-stocked shop and great café. Your recommendation means a lot to us! Hope to see you back soon, Derrick - GM of TCH Exeter
Negative experience: I really really like this climbing wall and the staff, but I have to give 1 star as their disabled/baby change toilets have been shut since September. For an organisation that claims to be inclusive this is disappointing and discriminatory behaviour. I really really hope they sort it out as everything about the wall is great, but if you are visiting with a baby or need to use the disabled toiler be warned you have to ask for it to be opened and the lights do not work.
Thank you for your feedback and for highlighting this important issue. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by the closure of our disabled and baby changing facilities since November. We understand how critical these amenities are and are actively working on a comprehensive plan to address the situation. Regarding the lights, we acknowledge that the downstairs toilets are currently closed. However, we want to assure you that if you visit us again, our office space is available for your use. It is private and has plenty of space for changing your baby. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work towards improving our facilities. Thank you for being a valued member of our community. Derrick Wong General Manager of TCH Exeter
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed climbing here, lovely staff with clear instructions. The routes were decently challenging as well, the only thing I disliked was the silver coin indicators for the starting holds, as they were hard to spot at times on the grey wall.
Glad to hear you had a great time at our centre. We'll be sure to think of a better solution for the start holds for the future. Thanks and see you on our walls again in the near future. Derrick Wong General Manager of TCH Exeter
Negative experience: They never have soap in the toilets. So everyone that uses the toilet is then climbing with dirty hands. I've complained to the staff several times over the past few months. Most recently they told me they shared my concern, as the kitchen often doesn't have soap either. (Seems like an issue for environmental health). They blame management, and I'd agree. Walls are well set, staff know what they are talking about. It'd be an amazing gym if it was run properly. Just bring your own soap and hand sanitizer.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. We recently had a delay in our shipping order, but we have immediately addressed the issue by purchasing emergency soap from the supermarket. Regarding the kitchen, we ensure that soap is always available for our kitchen staff. We are not sure which staff member mentioned otherwise, but rest assured, maintaining hygiene in the kitchen is a top priority for us. We appreciate your feedback and patience as we work to improve our facilities. Thank you for understanding and for being a valued member of our gym. Derrick Wong General Manager of TCH Exeter
Fantastic experience: Going toThe climbing hangar is a highly enjoyable experience, Bobby gave a very good induction.
Fantastic experience: Very good experience! The staffs are very friendly and patient for beginners.
Negative experience: Nice place but I feel like the routes don't change often enough at all! The place just feels samey plus the foot holds get worn and slippery and the hand holds are covered in a chalk/sweat lather and have no grip. Slightly disappointing as it could be great, fingers crossed it improves
Hello Jamie, This is Derrick, General Manager of TCH Exeter. Thank you for your feedback. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the infrequency of route changes and the slippery holds. We change routes weekly and completely refresh the site every 8 weeks to ensure variety and quality. Despite our busy site, I am committed to improving our cleaning practices to maintain better grip conditions. Next time you visit, I encourage you to try our Slab of the Week, which changes weekly. We look forward to welcoming you back and exceeding your expectations. Derrick Wong General Manager of TCH Exeter
Positive experience: Amazing centre, amazing food, good climbs for all ability. My only complaint is that the route setters always set at peak times. They seem to have a knack for working out the busiest time of the gym and setting during this period, leading to the gym being crowded. I'd avoid going on Tuesday (setting day) but other than that, can't fault.
Positive experience: Quite a nice place, but often very overcrowded, parking is a hassle and quite small.
Positive experience: I climbed here since it opened a couple of years ago. The place is great, people are nice, and the cafe is also good. I joined a few of the courses they organized and got useful advice. Unfortunately, the entire experience is let down but a major issue; it is just too popular at the moment and there is no system in place to limit the number of people climbing. Climbing for me is a moment to relax but it is not for the time being. Hopefully, things will change in the future and I will get dropped from my job so that I can climb in the mornings.
Thanks for your review! We're glad you enjoy climbing with us. Our quieter hours are from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekdays, and the gym tends to be less crowded in the summer. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the experience. Hope to see you on the walls again soon. Derrick General Manager of TCH Exeter
Fantastic experience: Our first visit The Hangar was fantastic! All of the staff were super helpful and friendly especially Archie who signed us in and served us in the cafe (excellent Latte!). We will definitely be back.
Glad to hear everyone had a great time and that you had a great experience with Archie. See you on our walls again in the near future! Derrick General Manager of TCH Exeter

Fantastic experience: Was my first time going today and had a really lovely time, really lovely staff and love that it's dog friendly
Fantastic experience: Very well equipped. Regular changes to climbing routes. Small cafe with reasonable choices on the menu. Staff very friendly and helpful
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member now for about one month. From receiving the best welcome and in-depth training by Greg I know this going to be a regular part of my schedule. His classes are super fun and give me so much excitement and confidence about my climbing ability. Already tackling the blues with great success.
Fantastic experience: I’m absolutely in love with the climbing hangar, I got into climbing about 4 months ago, The staff are genuinely so nice, and it’s always so good to see friendly faces on the door. I always have some amazing conversation with people like Greg, and it’s always nice to get support from them when I’m struggling on the wall too! Massive thankyou to all of the staff, they’ve really helped contribute to what makes climbing such a fun sport for me ☺️
Fantastic experience: Friendly atmosphere and great climbing. Refreshed weekly so always something new to climb
Fantastic experience: Great venue! Loads of climbing space across separate levels and has gym and kids sections also, lots of non climbing space too for food/coffee and working/viewing areas with a good range of gear on sale next to the cafe! I will be back!
Fantastic experience: Great place, really enjoyable. Would definitely highly recommended
Fantastic experience: Absolutely lovely place, there is a really nice relaxed vibe for all ages whether you are climbing or just hanging out for a coffee and a snack. I was climbing with my 33yrs old son while my wife had a coffee and played Scrabble with our 10 yrs old grandson and our dog.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing experience. Lovely and friendly staff who have lots of experience and knowledge. Especially bobby who helped me to find the right climb that suits me.
Fantastic experience: First time coming here and it was brilliant I will be coming back again with my family

Fantastic experience: We love it here. Staff are super friendly and the cafe is such a treat after a climb!

Positive experience: Great place with fantastic facilities and interesting climbs, could be be better parking but was fine with a 15 minute walk
Hello Kye, Thank you for your positive feedback about our facilities and climbs. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by limited parking; currently, we have only 10 spots available. However, we are actively working on finding a solution to add more parking spaces in the future to enhance your overall experience. We appreciate your understanding and hope to see you again soon. Derrick Wong The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Positive experience: Attended for an event which was great. I will say, however, that the regulars treated us as though we were trash as we were using an area they wanted to use. Only the staff made you feel welcome. It was also horrificly busy (Thursday after work). It was hard to walk between people safely, and regulars made you feel like you were getting in the way even though we followed the instructor. That said, I would love to go when it is quiet and with an instructor. Although side note that membership and refreshments are expensive as hell.
Hi Krysy, Thank you for your feedback. We're delighted to hear that you had a good time at our facilities and felt welcomed by our staff. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the crowd and regular patrons. We're committed to enhancing the overall experience during busy periods. Your input on pricing is valued, and we'll certainly review it. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future! Derrick Wong The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Fantastic experience: Had a really great day here. It was my sons birthday party and the staff were excellent at facilitating a fun session for four 8/9 yr olds with games, lots of climbs and climbing tips. Our coach was attentive and enthusiastic. We also had freshly made pizza afterwards and played board games upstairs. Climbing hangar is an excellent venue with a wide range of challenging climbing routes from entry level upwards. Picture below of the little hangar, two more levels of climbs available.
Hi Rob, thank you for the 5-star review, and we're delighted to hear that your son had a fantastic birthday party. We hope you'll share your positive experience with your friends and family about our facilities, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Negative experience: Thought it would be a nice idea to drop in on our way from London. Checked to see if it was open. Website and maps said yes. Turned up after 5 hours drive and an hour out of the way. The centre was closed at 3:15on a Friday afternoon. Please keep people informed
Hi Aaron, thank you for traveling all the way to London to visit our facilities. Unfortunately, there were 3 hours when our centre was closed as we were preparing for our first UV night. We made sure to post a notification on our social media pages, but we'll be sure to update our Google hours in the future. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see you again soon. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter

Fantastic experience: Class atmosphere. Banging food. W tunes. Out of this world setting. Really helpful to blossom my climbing ability to become the beast that i am today. Joe and charlie have been especially helpful on this journey to be the best climber in all hangars nationwide
Thank you for the review! We're thrilled Joe and Charlie could assist in your climbing journey at our venue. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter

Fantastic experience: My son (9) and I have been getting into bouldering recently and teaching ourselves the ropes (or lack thereof). I wish we'd come here first because it's super beginner-friendly with great staff and some easy routes to get started with. Nice that it's so easy to get to as well; it took us about 15 minutes to cycle from Exeter St David's station and there's ample covered bike parking.
Thank you for your positive feedback! We're glad you enjoyed your visit. Your support encourages us to continue providing great experiences. See you very soon. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Positive experience: Good bouldering centre with a nice variety of climbs. Bit of a gulf of difficulty between the grades in places, but that's always a risk from time to time. Perhaps more evenly balanced usually
Thank you for your review Jon! We're continuously working to balance difficulty levels for a better experience. Your insights are valuable in shaping our improvements. See you very soon. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Positive experience: It is a great place to exercise but not think you ecmxercising! Lovely staff! 3 stars only due to it always being too busy all the bleddy time.
Hey Josh, thanks for sharing your positive thoughts and kind words about our staff. We're striving to address the busy times and make your experience even better. Looking forward to having you visit, perhaps before 5pm on a weekday for a more relaxed session! See you soon.

Thank you for the kind words and the 5 star rating. We hope to see you again Dan.
Fantastic experience: Review of Climbing lesson with coach Jack Woodcock: Jack did my induction 4 months ago and i had promised myself some lessons with him once i had found my feet as a beginner climber. The lesson was nothing short of excellent, and i feel compelled to write a review. Jack split the session into two; firstly, we looked at how i am climbing the more basic routes, focusing on my position on the wall and how i could improve my movement/hip rotation. It was really good, going back to basics, and while at the time i found it a bit difficult to change my climbing style, 3 weeks later my technique has really improved after implementing the variations. The second half of the session we looked at a project of mine and with Jack's coaching i was able to complete the climb, which was a real bonus as i had spent weeks stuck on the crux move. Jack is incredibly knowledgeable about climbing and his teaching style is both respectful and professional, while at the same time, making the session relaxing and enjoyable. Since the teaching, i have been able to move up a grade which is great as one of the reasons i went to Jack in the first place was a plateauing of my development (the jump from Blue to Purple was quite hard until i learned these new skills) I am looking forward to another lesson in a couple of months and highly recommend Jack as a coach.
Thank you for sharing your five-star review of your climbing lesson with Coach Jack. I'm thrilled to hear that Jack's expertise and coaching style have made a positive impact on your progress as a climber. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to seeing you climb at our center again in the near future. Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Fantastic experience: Really good place to take children. Very helpful staff and so polite. Had a salad to eat and to be fair it was reasonable priced and tasted lovely. As for the climbing to so good for the money. Will definately take my kids back there.

Thank you for the kind words and support. Hope to see you on the walls again very soon! Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Fantastic experience: As a member at the hangar, visits are regular. This places is fantastic. Easy location to access. Best bouldering in the city. Routes changed regularly. Friendly staff. Tasty food and coffee. The staff are very friendly and helpful and contribute to a get vibe. Parking can be limited at peak times and it would be nice if there was an area to wash hands after climbing without having to go into a toilet.
Thank you for being a regular member at The Hangar Jacob! We're glad you find our facility fantastic and we appreciate your feedback about our friendly staff, tasty food, and great vibe. We apologize for any inconvenience with parking at peak times and the lack of a dedicated hand-washing area. We value your support and will consider your suggestions. See you on the walls soon! Derrick Wong General Manager of The Climbing Hangar Exeter
Fantastic experience: Challenging routes and regular changes. Great staff and a lovely community.
Fantastic experience: Great fun, went for a friend's birthday and had a blast. I learnt some basics and quickly got on with it. I nice range of easy and harder climbs for people of all levels. Not to mention a lovely cafe. If its your first time they'll give you a leaflet with some advice and a card with 20 climbs to complete. Finish them all you get a free drink!
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb and meet other climbers..
Fantastic experience: Some very fun world cup boulders and amazing coffee.
Fantastic experience: Nice climbing and very inclusive. Great place for all abilities.
Positive experience: Great fun. Bit over priced, for the casual visitor, otherwise would be 5 stars.
Fantastic experience: It was our first time climbing here, booked on a whim. Everything from start to finish was great. Easy to book our induction on the website. Staff and the counter was so friendly and helpful and didn't make us feel out of place at all. Idcution video and session with a member of the team. We LOVED the climbing and how they are numbered to show you the challenge and work up in hardness. Something for all. Even a Juniors room for the kids. Climbing shoes included in the price and the coffee we had afterwards at their cafe was also fab. Honestly had an amazing time and will be back very soon. So nice to come to a place that although full of clearly experienced climbers that everyone was positive and welcoming to newbies. Great atmosphere!
Fantastic experience: Only just started bouldering, great atmosphere and really enjoyable!
Fantastic experience: Awesome!! The walls and the food!
Negative experience: This is review on the cafe- climbing part is fantastic. Ordered a Pizza with friends and checked in about 20 minutes after they had received their orders to find my order had been missed and couldn't be completed now due to running out of dough. I accepted a refund and complimentary Burrito with Nachos which was appreciated. The only reasons I'm leaving this review is that first of all I asked for a non spicy burrito (due to an intolerance to spicy food) and was told the cafe would see what was possible, instead of letting me know I received a burrito stuffed full of a lot of jalapenos. Burrito didn't arrive for a while so I chased and was advised they'd microwave it and it would be done in a minute. I acknowledged to myself that maybe I should have been clearer and it was after all free food at that point but then as I was leaving, I saw a pizza being carried up the stairs which was confusing as I thought there was no more dough? Again fantastic for climbing and nothing against the staff, they all seem nice and maybe it was especially stressful due to the climbing event going on but will update with a new review after going again. wouldn't usually leave any reviews but seeing this kind of thing happening more and more around Exeter at various places and find myself wasting more and more of my time
Positive experience: 3.5 stars. Staff are nice & friendly. Setting in general & 45 degree digital boards beastmaker board is decent. £14 for bouldering seems steep considering half the center was being reset, they should tell you before you pay & discount the entry. 10 parking spaces available but we managed to get parked just after 10am. Just seems a bit steep really but we needed as shower as travelling which this place has so guess it was more like £12 entry each which is alot considering you can get roped & bouldering cheaper elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: Great bouldering centre, and also great coffee. Place is well equipped and clean with a good variety of regularly updated boulder problems. Staff are always friendly and welcoming, whether to regular visitors or to total beginners. Joe especially always seems to be on-hand to make my visits there as enjoyable as possible and his cheerful, positive demeanor never fails to put me in a good mood.
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere, friendly service and great climbs. Thumbs up all round
Negative experience: My little brother went here (16) got told he needed a 18yr old to come for the induction. Got there then the woman proceeded to walk away with my brother and spoke about whatever and then we could leave. So I didn’t even hear 1 word from the induction. Plus the place doesn’t even look that fun
Fantastic experience: Friendly, helpful staff. Super clean and tidy. Very modern and well equipped. The biggest strength here is the quality of the route setting. The coloured routes promote the feeling of achievement. There are also lots of sample problems designed to train specific moves. The cafe is excellent. It’s not cheap to go here if not a member, but you get what you pay for.
Fantastic experience: Great set atm, the slab upstairs as got some lovely but tricky problems on it. Coffee and food are superb too with awesome friendly staff
Positive experience: Great place to enjoy a few hours of climbing and some tasty food after. It's a bit expensive if you're a pay as you go but totally worth it, everyone is friendly and inclusive regardless of ability!
Fantastic experience: Good bouldering centre, friendly staff. Really good value if you get a membership. Parking can be tricky though.
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb. High walls with a wide variety of routes for all skill levels and plenty of space so you will never have trouble finding a route even when busy.
Fantastic experience: Love this place! Two levels of climbing walls and a gym. Super friendly staff, gorgeous food & drink too.
Positive experience: Excellent gym, boulders for everyone, friendly staff, delicious pizzas and a decent weight lifting gym. The only reason for four stars is the lack of parking, this could be challenging if you’re coming during the busy hours.
Fantastic experience: Nicest employees and great routes! I’ve been visiting for a while now and think the atmosphere makes it a fab place to hang out and bring friends along. They’re dog friendly too which makes things so much easier for my partner and I as we can take turns climbing / dog sitting. As a student, I find it’s also a good place to do some work and find balance with exercise too.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility...nice to spend time with such good-natured people all enjoying themselves. Café seems to be shut a lot but apart from that...very good.
Fantastic experience: Great Gym with tons of great problems and very friedly staff. The only complaint would be that it was a little busy, but it wasn't much of a problem.
Positive experience: Loads of routes. Enjoyed my first visit.
Fantastic experience: Wsrm welcome and induction as a complete newbie. Very encouraging staff and regulars. As a bigger girl I was concerned I would struggle or be laughed at, this was not the case. Great for all ages and abilities. Great fun, esrm atmosphere and nice kittle cafe
