EICA Ratho Gym: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Awesome, well equipped climbing centre with something cor every skill set.
Fantastic experience: Imho best gym in Edinburgh
Fantastic experience: Go climbing here all the time..
Fantastic experience: Great place and staff
Positive experience: Staff were very nice, bouldering area was under construction. Didn't know we had to book in advance the fun zone, but had fun top roping with my six year old. Grades were fair, however noticed the holds have been up a while, could use a wash. Overall we had a great experience, the staff were great.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing gym!
Positive experience: A great place with lots to do, including soft play for the kids! I wouldn’t recommend the bouldering for now, however. Went last week for the first time, was charged full price only to discover they have taken most of the boulders down to rebuild, leaving only a small room. I would have appreciated a discount or notice, and certainly won’t be going back until the new boulders are up.
Fantastic experience: Just an epic gym! Can’t wait till go for a climb (went for soft play) :)
Fantastic experience: Great session with my 5yo, instructors are really good with kids & help progress their climbing skills while keeping it fun
Fantastic experience: A world-class climbing wall. The route setting is consistently excellent, and equally so across all the grades. I really like how the big, cool holds and volumes get used on the easier grades as much as they do on the harder ones. Ratho is ace and I wish I lived closer. Three thumbs up.
Positive experience: An impressive climbing centre, for sure. A bit frustrating that the routes didn't seem to be tagged properly. The bouldering in the main hall seemed to have lots of tags missing, several of the chalkboards on the autobelays had been half rubbed off, and almost nothing lined up with the routes or grades logged on Griptonite.
Fantastic experience: This is an amazing climbing area.
Fantastic experience: Went to clip and climb with the kids. A great introduction to climbing and most of all the kids had a blast. I would highly recommend this. Make sure you arrive 20 mins before your session so that you spend your time having fun and not using it for inductions ect.
Fantastic experience: Best crag in Scotland ♀️
Fantastic experience: Great climbing facilities, need to have your own kit or it gets pricy quickly. Cafe nice, plenty of free parking.
Fantastic experience: The gym has a great variety of training equipment catering for all levels of experience. Friendly and helpful staff who always keep the area clean and tidy.
Negative experience: ' . "
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience for the kids!
Positive experience: I am rating 4/5 based on my experience spending about 90 minutes bouldering only (no rope climbing at all). Some of the big walls looked like excellent climbing but I didn't get a chance to try them out. I am a relative novice (around V2-3 typically) and I was a little disappointed at the selection for bouldering around my level. There are two main places for bouldering: on the simulated rocks out in the middle of the climbing space and inside in a small gym. The indoor spot was more like what I was used to, but unfortunately focused primarily on overhangs instead of slabs, which I prefer. There was one wall that looked like it was vertical or maybe a little less but unfortunately they were setting it during the time I visited so I didn't get to try it. The route labeling was generally very good although some routes (especially those on the synthetic boulders) seemed to have lost their starter markings (which also described the grade) so some guesswork was necessary. It didn't bother me too much but I noticed it. The synthetic boulders were really cool to me, since I had only ever climbed in a gym with flat-ish walls before. The new features for footholds made for a really cool open-feeling type of climbing I enjoyed. Of the 12+ faces of these boulders to climb, I would say that three were more slab faces, a couple more were pretty vertical, and the rest were overhangs of differing degrees. I would say a pretty good mix, though I quickly ran through the problems I could solve at my level and was left looking for more routes. One nice thing is there are extra "bonus" routes set using just the features of the rock face. Ask someone about how it works because I wasn't doing things right at first, but there are some nice routes from what I can tell that simulates what outdoor climbing could be like. Most of the routes were too hard for me but there was one easy one I enjoyed getting the feel for. If I lived in the area, I would definitely come back and try to learn more on these problems. Plus all the overhang would force me to work on my weak spots! Overall things felt a bit old and funky but there was some really cool and unique climbing experience I got. Furthermore, one of the employees there told me they were just working to get some more competition-style bouldering walls out there, so I expect it will be catching up to other bouldering gyms soon in terms of the type of experiences you will find. I hope they keep some of the synthetic rock stuff around too, though. I really valued some of my experience with it.
Fantastic experience: Really great facility with top-notch staff. My daughter loves her climbing sessions here
Fantastic experience: Great place for younger and older kids! Good selection of climbing walls. Kids love it
Fantastic experience: Great climbing facility, especially for leading. Bring a long rope!
Fantastic experience: Working out near it, not at it! Haha
Fantastic experience: At judo scotlands national dojo!!
Fantastic experience: This is one of the best serious gyms in Scotland. Good machines for sure, but a whole wall of power boxes with Olympic bars and a lot of free weights. Not often very busy, loads of car parking. If you want a big gym without idiots texting in the squat boxes, this is for you.
Positive experience: We have an Edinburgh Leisure Soft Play membership and as much as we like this venue, it baffles me that they have disabled parking but no parent parking?!?!
Fantastic experience: Great location, food pretty good if a tad expensive but overall good
Fantastic experience: Largest in Europe, consistent resetting of routes, sometimes mobbed but never boring
