Croydon Boxing Gym: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Really fun gym! Great atmosphere and funny coaches
Positive experience: My teenage son who has Austism Spectrum Disorder has been at this gym for just over a year now, initially he was at another local boxing gym but after poor communication and organisation a friend recommended this one. I had booked PT lessons, from the first lesson Ted was on fire, my son looked like he was going to collapse but he really enjoyed it. Then after a few lessons Ted recommended the group class, I was scared as i wondered how he would cope, surprisingly my son preferred the group sessions and has been attending with no issues that I'm aware of. I'm not sure who the coach is as my son doesn't know the name of who is training him but he enjoys going & it's made him a little bit more confident in himself. Happy I found this boxing gym as my son was really upset at the first gym letting him down.
Fantastic experience: Was a bit skeptical at first before I went in but they were really nice & helped if needed it's what the community needs the staff were very friendly and other members were nice also , a great workout and training combined and didn't pressure you it's a great atmosphere
Negative experience: I am very upset with how unprofessional the main coach ted is, as I just arrived to one session he proceeded to lecture me on not seeing my son for a couple days as he has private lessons with a different gym due to the fact that I asked ted if he would provide this service for my son but he brushed of the idea I believe due to laziness however I was told it is for the benefit of the child and they would like to do what’s in the child’s best interest however after some back and forth he then went on to attempt to embarrass my 8 year old autistic son in front of the other parents and class mates immediately after are dissagreement asking him “what child made you cry again during sparing was it this one or that one or both” in a very mocking tone causing my 8 year old autistic son to be very uncomfortable and visibly upset, I then proceeded to point out that this was unnecessary to say and that is not in the best interest of the child what did you get out of that? what would possess a grown adult to do that in front of the whole class? Making my child visibly uncomfortable upset and knocking his confidence in front of everyone was not in he’s best interest was it? That was not going to benefit my child in anyway I believe it was an attempt to bully and upset my child as I was going back and forth with him in regards to paying for private lessons elsewhere. Ted proceeded to suggest “what you don’t want him sparing no more” “no i never said I don’t want him to spar I just don’t want him being belittled and embarrassed by a grown adult in front of everyone” who is supposed to be a role model alongside a coach for children with all different needs and backgrounds alongside this I asked him does he not feel what he just done was wrong and he said “no I don’t think I said anything wrong “ after that I left. That behaviour is unacceptable from a grown adult who should be a pillar in our community for children and young adults. Very disappointed in the gym overall as I believed they actually had the children’s best interest at heart however after seeing him attempt to embarrass my child due to him not being able to bully me for taking my child to private lessons else where when i initially asked him really showed me that he is in fact a very small man who will then take out he’s frustration on a child. So well done to ted for showing he’s true colours embarrassing a 8 year old i hope it helped he’s ego. In regards to the response received, I can understand why you would respond in a way that would make ted look like he was trying “boost confidence” however we had already managed the crying and shook hands after the sparing had happened on the day and there was no ill feelings my son enjoys sparing. Ted brought it up to be spiteful a week after not in class privately or with just said children involved in sparing, but at the reception desk after the back and forth we had, because of the above reasons. Thanks for the response though.
Hello Clarise, we are sorry to hear you had a negative experience with our gym. Your child had trained with us for many years and was progressing very well. With regards to the PT, Ted refuses to do PT's for children because he believes that children should enjoy boxing and not be forced into it, otherwise they will fall out of love with the sport later in life. Ted has never accepted a PT for a child since being at our club. You are more than welcome to take your child to do PT's at any gym, but we typically recommend group settings for children as it builds their social skills and is much more fun for their age-group, and in our experience is likely to lead to long-term commitment to the sport! With regards to the crying comment, your son boxed brilliantly for the first time in sparring and then started crying afterward (which is normal). I had spoken to you on the day to inform you that your child boxed well, and that it was normal to cry as kids do. The next lesson Ted was trying to ask which sparring partner made him cry because he was going to reassure him that he done well against them, and that the other children he boxed cried their first time too. He then gets the children to shake hands to make them understand that there is no ill-intentions. Ted does this speech often with children that cry in sparring to reassure them that it is normal and to build their confidence in the future. However, we do believe you jumped the gun a bit and removed your child from the situation far too soon thinking the conversation was going down a different path. I understand that you were trying to protect your son from what you thought was a negative treatment, but we assure you that Ted was only trying to boost the confidence of your child. We are sorry that this misunderstanding has left a bad feeling to yourself and your child, but please don't hesitate to contact the gym and we would be happy to discuss this further and hopefully resolve it!
