Fantastic experience: Training in no Gi BJJ has been brilliant. Mark took the time to understand how to help me train despite pain and fatigue. Ive been to three classes, am loving it and am learning slowly but surely with excellent guidance. Mark makes classes dynamic, inclusive, focusing on the individual's strengths and psyche. The academy and training is professional and the atmosphere is friendly and cooperative. I absolutely love training here and would recommend the academy to all.

Fantastic experience: Been training here consistently for almost a year and my skills in striking and ground game has increased greatly since arriving as a complete beginner along with my overall strength and fitness. Everybody in my experience has been warm, encouraging and will put in the extra effort to help if you are just starting or having difficulty. The gym feels like a strong community with people from many backgrounds. Head coach Mark Philips is patient but will push you when necessary which is needed to improve. All in all great environment which has helped implement discipline into my life.

Fantastic experience: I have trained with Sifu Mark for around 2 years. Amazing training place and great way of teaching. Very friendly, with a family-like atmosphere. Thanks to their coaching, I achieved a gold medal in a white belt international grappling competition. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported my development in Ju Jitsu including: Sifu Mark, Mike, Herb, Simon and Owen.

Fantastic experience: The academy is a great place to learn how to first protect yourself mentally and physically. There aren't many places that can offer this level of attention in different martial art disciplines at one time.

I'm so glad I chose LWCA as the academy to start my BJJ journey and highly recommend LWCA to anyone else looking to do the same!

Fantastic experience: Wing Chun guy for 3 years before coming here. Can say the lessons are beginner friendly, Instructor/Sifu Mark Philips and his senior students are enthusiastic towards helping new students. Sifu is humble, kind, and open minded. No toxicity exists in the dojo. Sifu is well trained - teaches Wing Chun, Sanda Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu well. As a Wing Chun practitioner myself, I can confirm his skills are of expert level. Sifu also produces high level students. I only met a few of his advanced Wing Chun students but they are all capable of applying Wing Chun. You will learn a lot here!

Fantastic experience: This is a fantastic place to train in martial arts. I take the BJJ class and the instructors, Sifu Mark, Mike and Herb are all excellent. All extremely knowledgeable and really great teachers, particularly good with people starting out. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and the vibe is great. I could not recommend this place highly enough.

Fantastic experience: My partner and I have been training at the LWCA for a few months, and we absolutely love it! The classes are so fun and enjoyable, but also very practical and applicable to street defense. Sifu Mark also shares his experiences (35+ years) and teaches us how to apply what we’ve learnt to real life situations, as well as understanding the mindset of people, and how to deal with those who leave you with no choice but to fight. We can't praise this place and all those who are a part of it enough - all the instructors are so helpful and cater to your needs, regardless of the size of the class or what level you are on. We highly recommend training here!

Fantastic experience: I joined The Academy a few months ago with an absolute zero knowledge about marshal arts or fighting. Today, couldn't be more happy with a decision to choose this place to train: teachers are thorough, students are friendly, good accessibility and while I am still a beginner I'm happy with my progress so far. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: I have been bringing my 16 year old son to this club for a while and I wanted to see what progress he would make before I decided to write a review. I am now confident enough to tell you that after 2 years of training elsewhere, but never being fully happy, Davide (my son) has now find the club that fully meets his exacting expectations. Even if he is a black belt in kickboxing, he felt like a beginner when he first started at this club. He found that the level of professionalism, the attitude to training, the focus and belief in over coming all adversities were sky high! This club is now become his second home, he is there every single day without fail. Sifu is the best teacher he ever had and really has brought out the confidence and the mental power in my son as well as his physical stamina and abilities to a higher level. The financial commitment each month is a minimal requirement in comparison to the vast return on that investment. Rest assured if you come to this club, you won’t be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: Great academy would highly recommend! The instructor/Sifu Mark Phillips is very experienced and teaches both the art as well as how to apply it to real world self defence situations. Having trained in many different schools I find this to be one of the most effective for real life self defence. The environment is very open to beginners whilst still maintaining rigorous and intense training

Fantastic experience: Went along to a BJJ taster class in early October and loved it. As soon as I stepped into the gym Sifu Mark Phillips, Mike and everyone in attendance was very welcoming. The atmosphere is committed, focused and professional. As a beginner I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t disappointed. I came out of the class feeling out of breath and well drilled through each technique. The communication from the coaching is terrific, it gives you confidence in how to proceed. Stuck on a move and have any questions? Just ask. I am hooked and plan on committing to BJJ for the long term. My advice is if you want to start a Martial Art here then setup a taster class as soon as possible. Don’t wait!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been training BJJ at London Wing Chun twice a week for the last fortnight. I’d strongly recommend it to anyone looking to learn self-defence and stay active. Sifu Mark Phillips, Mike and the rest of the team are great instructors - encouraging us to ask questions and offering choices on what we learn. As someone whose been unlucky with injuries in martial arts in the past, I also really appreciate instructors giving good guidance and advice to help ensure beginners like me don’t accidentally hurt themselves or each other. The club has a really nice welcoming vibe, with people of different ages, backgrounds and levels of experience. I am excited to continue and improve.

Joseph Vassie 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: A truly excellent gym that offers wing chun, kickboxing, MMA and BJJ. Mark leads the operation skilfully; clearly communicating and sharing his 35 years of experience light-heartedly, safely and expertly. The teaching is based on principles that transcend the individual disciplines and resolve into a complete fighting system. Mark runs a YouTube channel called "Fight SCIENCE" so if you want to get a feel for the teaching style you can check out his videos there. The team around Mark are tremendously impressive as well: Herbie's no gi BJJ class is richly detailed, practical and superbly paced; Mike's BJJ class is inventive, clever and mixes drills with practical exercises in a way that facilitates deep learning and easy retention; Theo's Wing chun class is always an amazing opportunity to be taught by someone who really understands the art and can apply it with speed and precision. I have been to many gyms and dojos and have never been made to feel at home and part of a community so quickly as at the London Wing Chun Academy.

Fantastic experience: I am a beginner at this academy, having also trained for a few months in the past. To my knowledge, it has the most intense training programme and offers ridiculous value for money, and you can also train in BJJ, kick boxing, and MMA. Mark Philips is a very enjoyable teacher, hugely experienced, and very supportive. I have also trained with Theo who is excellent and super nice. There are both men and women, and I find the academy to be a friendly and safe place to train in. There is a fair amount of repetition in the concepts we train in which is helpful and makes classes easy to join at any point. There are senior students helping and most students can be relied on to turn to for explanations. The floor it self is spacious and provides some gym equipment too. There is occasional training on the rooftop when the weather is good. I think that if you want to be part of a WC community this is a great place to go to and you can get as involved as you want. Good luck!

Fantastic experience: I had been looking to return to Wing Chun for a long time, so during lockdown I decided to search for video classes that I could do from home. During my search I came across the London Wing Chun Academy, who had made the bold move to adapt and actually teach LIVE online classes! This was more than I’d hoped for so I signed up immediately. Since taking the classes I have been utterly impressed at how well this works as a medium, and this is in no doubt down to Sifu Mark Phillips’ extremely knowledgable and in-depth teaching style (not to mention his relaxed attitude and sense of humour!) Everything is broken down and explained in great detail, and having your Sifu on hand to correct and praise you, makes it the closest thing to actually being in the Academy in person. With online students from around the world, as well as the actual classes in London - if Wing Chun is something you are interested in - now you have no excuse! I can’t recommend the London Wing Chun Academy enough.

Fantastic experience: I felt anxious before the first time I went, yet within minutes of being there I felt so completely relaxed! This is a wonderful place to learn and train, it combines the incredible knowledge that Sifu Mark Phillips and the other instructors have, the calmness and willingness to help you learn, and also the laughs that make it so fun! I could not recommend it more whether you want to learn self defence, try a new skill or just meet some new people, you have to come here! I have been very fortunate to be able to go to this academy!

MrArleyMarley 4 years ago

Negative experience: Very poor level of training. This "school" is full of nancy boys who tell you off if you train too hard or become too competitive. If you're serious about martial arts because you want to enter competitions or defend yourself this school is not for you. The head instructor hides behind excuses like "real champions don't need to compete" which is just code for saying if he ever did compete he wouldn't last a minute. The techniques they use are not realistic and training here would lead to a false sense of security. Their techniques will not work in the real world. They are happy to take your money and sign you up on their plans! This is a scam. Train anywhere but here. You have been warned! NOTE TO RESPONSE FROM THE OWNER: (I used to live in London and attended BJJ classes all over the city. Your London "dojo" was the worst one I ever went to. Not just in Britain, but probably throughout Europe. Your teaching was sub par and your attitude was terrible. It's highly likely you ask your students to give you the reviews you get but they're not genuine and they're not accurate. My original comment stands.

Thank you for your review**. Although we are shocked as you appear to reside in Australia and we are based in the UK. Considering you have NEVER trained with us, we are very surprised by your comment. **Unfortunately, from time to time we do receive FAKE reviews intended to pull down our review score. This is one such review, please ignore. As this does not reflect the view or policy of our academy.

Fantastic experience: I think for anyone growing up in the 80s Bruce Lee was a absolute inspiration! I got involved with martial arts as a kid, nothing substantial till I got to The London Wing Chun Academy! The way Sifu Mark Phillips taught was inspirational and so effective!! Not all great martial artists are great teachers, so I was over the moon when I found the London Wing Chun Academy! Not only did he teach the style Bruce Lee learned, he taught it and how it's applicable in real life!! And also matching it with Kick Boxing, BJJ and Wrestling, all great partnerships with Wing Chun under one roof!! making a complete fighting system!! Sifu was and is 2nd to none!! That's why no matter where in the world I have travelled and lived, I always pay my dues to Sifu Mark Phillips!! And everywhere I've been, weather it's in Europe, Australia or America, all Sifu's have known of him and extended their respect and admiration for him, to me, which speaks volumes! Not only is he a great practitioner, great teacher, respected amongst his peers and across a multitude of different disciplines, he's humble and approachable!! So what inspired me? Bruce Lee for sure, domestic violence certainly, seeking discipline and community absolutely. What kept me training? A fantastic teacher in Sifu Mark Phillips and the community at the academy that I still tap into, till this day, even tho I've been sidelined due to surgeries! for the last 2 years. What keeps me training?  The desire to be better. The 2mm difference between right and wrong. And obviously being surrounded by a amazing support team at the London Wing Chun Academy!!

Fantastic experience: I have trained at other gyms and in other disciplines, but from the first interaction with Sifu Mark onwards, I have found this dojo/gym to be up there with the very best of them. Great emphasis is placed on being respectful and having the correct attitude. This makes it a very inclusive place, which in turn is reflected in the demographics of the classes (all levels, shapes, sizes and ages). Every student feels part of the 'team'. The knowledge imparted by Sifu Mark and the other coaches is always detailed, patient and inclusive. He gives you advice which pertains to your abilities and what you are able to do, which I think is the mark of a great teacher. In turn, the inclusive culture of the place trickles down to the students who are all helpful, friendly and care about the place. Training is demanding but very rewarding (you get out of it what you put in). In short, regardless of your ability/age/gender, this is what a martial arts place should be. Oh and it's great value for money.

Ioakim Ioakim 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great place to train. Inclusive for any level, even for complete beginners. The instructors have a vast amount of experience and they take the time to break down the techniques and help you on a personal level. Everything is put in real world scenarios and the instructors really help you understand how to use the techniques taught when you need them.

Fantastic experience: I train in Wing Chun and San Da Kick Boxing classes. Sifu Mark does a great job at taking Wing Chun and making it relevant to modern situations. He is traditional in his approach, as he aims to build a solid foundation for his students, before progressing them to intermediate & advanced levels. His classes require dedication as you can't learn Wing Chun over night. There is a lot of focus on key details, as well as the larger picture. I have trained in other martial arts before and would say this is a great school!

Fantastic experience: The London Wing Chun Academy has got to be one of the best things I have aligned myself with. I have been on a life journey of self discovery and improvement but found that I was lacking just a couple of ingredients to really excel in life. I was missing self discipline and mastery, and Wing Chun has filled that gap and added another string to my bow as it were. I am so honoured to have Sifu Mark Phillips as my master teacher. He has an awesome YouTube channel that is very informative, and he puts out content every week which he goes over in class. From traditional Wing Chun, Sifu has the ability to show how it can be applied in the real world if ever you are faced with any confrontational situations on the streets. Sifu also has his own flair and expression of Wing Chun from his many years of teaching and real world experience which makes the art and application modern. His other assistant instructors are all awesome. They do all they can to help us master all the drills and combat techniques and that we are taught. They all want us to do and be the best. It's always a joy attending class, training and getting to know fellow Wing Chun students, and watching each other grow in skill and as people. I feel so much more confident in myself, self assured, determined which has made me motivated and dedicated to do and be my best. I am so grateful what LWCA, Sifu and his instructors have done for me so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this Wing Chun journey takes me. If you are thinking of having a look to see what LWCA has to offer (and I have only touched the surface) and what it can do for you, do not hesitate in giving it a go. You will be a better person for it if you join and stick with it.

Fantastic experience: I've trained here for a few months now, and feel it's an excellent place to train. I've trained at several martial arts clubs over the years, both good and not so good. I'm pleased to say that London Wing Chun Academy is one of the best places I ever trained. Great instructors, really observant, supportive and knowledgeable. The type of training really works got me, because it includes plenty of practical application, and a good amount of pad work. It's a really welcoming place to train too, a good spirit amongst those that train there. Finally, it's a well-equipped centre with plenty of bags, wooden dummies, and a weights section. I wish I'd started training here earlier!

There are also a range of other classes available at the academy, such as BJJ, San Da kickboxing, and general fitness & conditioning classes. Fantastic experience: I had improved my fitness level. I’m learning so much about self-defence and I love each lesson our Sifu teaches. He is very encouraging, breaks down the lessons so well for us to understand and is a great teacher all around. The assisting instructors are super friendly and helpful at all times and the beginners and intermediate classes are so much fun and very insightful. The members are so supportive and always willing to help as well during all classes, a real nice community.☺️ It a well rounded academy and my husband and I love every minute of the training we do there.

Fantastic experience: Been training here for nearly a year. Really turned my life round as I had hit rock bottom and had lost my direction in life. The club is great value for money but most important for me is the kindness of the instructors and their commitment to their particular disciplines. This makes for an excellent environment to train in. Over time I have increased my training schedule and find the flexibility of the drop-in sessions is absolutely wonderful. I can join as many classes as I wish ‘as and when’. I highly recommend The London Wing Chun Acadamy on so many levels for both absolute beginners and more advanced martial artists alike.

Fred Fordham 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: BJJ review I’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu here seven months - with a few months previous experience - and am getting a lot out of it. Friendly, high-level instruction, great training partners, very reasonably priced. The warm welcome and detailed, safety-first, approach might make this a particularly good place for anyone interested in trying out combat sports but daunted by the prospect of ambling into the local MMA gym. A few details: For those discerning or nerdy enough to care about such things; the school’s excellent and affable head coach, Mark Phillips, is a second degree blackbelt in the Mauricio Gomes lineage. He’s very good, in other words. And his wide knowledge of other martial arts provides interesting additional context for the material. Though the team here competes with success under the Mauricio Gomes Origin BJJ banner, the school is primarily dedicated to Jiu-Jitsu for no-rules fighting or self defence (rather than strictly for grappling competition) - with regular reminders of the dangers of strikes, and pointers about which techniques one should and should not consider useful if ever involved in an actual altercation. There’s also a lot of stand-up stuff covered (judo and freestyle wrestling). So a good place to train for both fans of the sport and those interested in self defence. Tuesday evening classes are taken by Herbie - an experienced, very technically minded purple belt, and also a natural teacher. Recommended.

Ria Corbett 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: I've tried several kung fu schools around London and settled here because of their teaching style and culture. It's the right balance of structured for beginners whilst still maintaining the flexibility that one might need in a real fight. There are several instructors in each class so that students get enough attention, and everyone is very friendly and supportive of the fact that people learn at different paces :)

Fantastic experience: I have been at the academy doing wing chun for almost one year now. This is by far the best training place I’ve ever been at. Sifu Mark Phillips is kind, articulate and totally switched on. The class is all about the real world out there and often reference to street analysis are complemented on the academy’s youtube channel. It’s not only eye opening but a great experience for me to enable me to be active, mentally and physically aware and being surrounded by golden people, from Sifu to the staff to the members. I live in Woolwich, miles away, and there might as well be 200 more academies in between, I’d always make the effort to travel 1.30 hours to get to this academy. This place is the place to go if you want to learn wing chun and want to be in a friendly and professional place. Thanks to all at the academy!

Fantastic experience: Best place to learn martial arts

Michael Okello 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: I initially joined to get fit as an alternative to regular gym to avoid lifting weights and after attending the introductory self defence classes, I enjoyed it so much I upgraded to full membership and enrolled for the WingChun classes. The fitness classes were an added Bonus that am now adding to my training regime. Been a member on/off for over 2 years now and what keeps bringing me back are the stellar classes provided by Sifu Mark Philips. Lately I have also started appreciating the different classes provided by Sifu Peter and Dave's Friday sessions. The variety of instructor led classes provides a complete learning experience for anyone interested in self defence, fitness and martial arts training.

Fantastic experience: I have been training here for 10 months. It is an inspiring place to train with great teachers, talented and supportive training partners and a great learning atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone regardless of their current abilities and goals because it is an inclusive place where you can work towards whatever goals you have in a way that is suited to you. The monthly membership is beyond good value as it includes all of the different martial arts and fitness classes for a very reasonable price.

Fantastic experience: Attending the classes here have improved my fitness level and more importantly my self-confidence. I have learned so much from all the instructors in this academy, from every single session. Coming to this place has definitely changed my outlook and perspective on fitness and strength. It has also been a great outlet to relieve stress and have a certain level of mindfulness. The community defines this place. I always feel welcomed even after being away for some time. I always recommend this place to everyone I know.

Fantastic experience: Having trained at a number of different gyms and clubs over the last decade, I have come to realise the importance of gym culture and training environment to the progress of the individual. Having recently moved back down to London, I joined the club after feeling it's somewhere I could personally grow. The quality is instruction is fantastic, the people are friendly and approachable, and there's a real sense of community which is also important to me. I would highly recommend the LWCA to anyone looking to study any of the arts on offer at the gym.

Fantastic experience: I have been to many schools. This shool is in a league of their own. Structure, knowledge, patience, encouragement and classes everyday. Sifu Mark Philips not only knows his craft but knows how to teach it. I've met very good practitioners in my time and not all have been able to articulate it very well. Sifu has to be the best teacher I have had the pleasure to learn from. I recently relocated to Reading and after trying local schools I ended up realising this school is a rare gem. I now commute to class from Reading which speaks volumes about just how good this school is. The people including the instructors are all welcoming and a real team. Put in the effort and everyone helps and want to see you grow. If you want to learn self defence, learn how to fight, get fit or just take on a hobby, this school is perfect for you!!

Fantastic experience: I've been training here for several years now. Classes are challenging and enjoyable, the atmosphere is relaxed but serious - people are there to learn. Sifu Mark Philips is an excellent teacher who encourages questions and offers full, honest responses. I really appreciate the mix of people here and the school ethos is one of courtesy and respect for all who study, train or exercise there.

Fantastic experience: I've been to a few martial arts schools and LWCA is by far my favourite. The friendly atmosphere, the top level instruction and the great facilities all make it a place that I look forward to going to as often as I can. Sifu Mark Phillips is a lifelong martial artist with the incredible ability to present difficult techniques and concepts in a way that even beginners can grasp. And don't let the Academy's name fool you - as well as being a Mecca for Wing Chun, Sifu also provides fantastic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction (in which he is a Black Belt). I exclusively train BJJ here, and as well as learning a vast amount over the past few years, I've also made a ton of great friends. If you're considering the Academy, I urge you to come down and try out a class. You'll soon find it will feel like your second home!

Fantastic experience: After years of wanting to train a martial art, I finally plucked up the courage and went solo to LWCA for a taster session. I was immediately hooked and made to feel welcome by all. I’ve never enjoyed the whole gym experience with all the bravado and bulging egos, so going to an academy where you train to fight was rather daunting - I needn’t have worried. So many different personalities from all walks of life, each with a different reason for being there, all of whom are friendly, respectful and happy to help out/train. Sifu Mark Philips is a seriously experienced martial artist in not only Wing Chun, BJJ and San Da but the science of fighting itself with a true ability to articulate his knowledge with passion. Over the years, I have made some solid friendships and met many inspirational people through the academy and despite a long commute since moving, I still train here 3 days a week! If you have ever thought about training a martial art or Wing Chun in particular - you simply can’t beat it.

Fantastic experience: The London Wing Chun Academy is bar far the best place to train. I have been a student for many years and have made many friends in the process of my training journey. You will not find a better Sifu anywhere, he not only teaches you the art but he trains your mind to understand every element of it so it becomes your natural instinct. A fantastic Sifu and a fully equipped academy to train at whether you want to get fit or learn the arts. It has helped me through many difficult times. I highly recommend it

zoe lawrence 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: I have trained at the academy for the last four years and believe that the instruction and knowledge within the academy is unparalleled in London and the UK. The key instructors have in excess of 10 years experience and knowledge, with the Sifu who has over 30 years experience teaching across London, Europe and America. New students are not only taught the traditional elements of Wing Chun but also the practical elements, making it a great introduction for anyone who is interested in the art but who is also looking for an solid self defense system. The YouTube channel Fight Science, also offers practical information and drills to the students supporting their development, and safety, both on and off of the mats.

Fantastic experience: I've been attending The London Wing Chun Academy for a couple of years now and mainly do the Wing Chun and the fitness. Over the last year I've had a few life events which have meant that I haven't been able to attend as much as I like but when I've gone back I've been welcomed in the most generous way that I've felt truly humbled. There's a real honest vibe there and what I love is that I can go there and train. That for me is what it is about. I'm nowhere near as good as I want to be but I will get there because I believe in this place and the people and staff that populate it. What is crucial is that the "gaffer" is a good guy and that's Sifu Mark Phillips. The way he approaches the training and teaching with dedication, integrity and humour I find really reassuring. He really knows his stuff and he would do having had thirty years experience. You can't buy that. He's grafted and it shows in his passion and knowledge. I'm a big Man U fan and I liken him a bit to Alex Ferguson to tell you the truth who's man management skills were second to none. I find it a very inspiring place.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member of the London Wing Chun Academy for just over 13 years now as of this writing and have seen it grow from it's humble beginnings in Southgate to the complete martial arts facility that it is today. It has been a major influence in my life and have always referred back to it to help provide balance to my otherwise hectic lifestyle that I've continued to live. I could honestly say that without the powerful lessons I've learned training here under the guidance of my instructor Sifu Mark Phillips, I would not be where I am today and recommend anyone to come down and give it a go. The facilities are great with a nice community of fellow students to train with. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: A fantastic place that helps you develop a deeper understanding of the practical applications and techniques from several styles of martial arts wing chung bin mainly ,within a friendly and constructive environment anyone who whant to start practice a self defence tehnich, yoga classes and training to get in to shape.

Fantastic experience: I've trained and seen a few martial arts schools in my life, but The LWCA is definitely the best place to train, by far! It's thanks to the dedication of Sifu Mark Phillips and his instructors who are an inspiration and wealth of knowledge that make the academy so good. It's truly a great honour to be taught by Sifu Mark and train amongst some like minded kung-fu brothers and sisters.
