Fantastic experience: I visited Roger Gracie Academy and trained 5 sessions for the 6 days that I was in London. I must say every single person I met there from the instructors, to the students, to the people that work there (which I am sure train BJJ) were very friendly and welcoming. The instructions and classes are highly skilled and technical! Worth the visit and would highly recommend to anyone visiting London that wants to train BJJ. Alex Smith instructs the fundamental classes which he breaks down in detail that makes sense. Abbie O’Toole takes the ladies class on a Saturday, great instructor and person. Bruno also great! I didn’t meet Roger Gracie but did see him across the mats whilst training.

Negative experience: I trained here for a few months and overall thought it was alright. The professors are nice enough and the facilities and training areas were furnished to a decent standard. I am predominantly interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a self-defence art. It was nice that they did include stand-up self-defence techniques at the start of each class but I felt that this was brushed over and there wasn’t much time to practice. Much more focus was given to sports techniques which wouldn’t necessarily work on the street. One time we were shown how to untuck the opponent’s gi from their belt and strangle them with it- I felt that I wouldn’t have a use for this technique and had wasted my time showing up to training that day. The techniques are taught in a random order and out of context, so it was difficult as a beginner to understand how everything fits together (though supposedly there is a focus on one position per week). The professors sometimes seemed tired or not that interested in teaching beginners, so combined with the lack of focus and direction it wasn’t the best environment for learning. That said, I still reached the first belt stripe in the time I was there, so there must have been some tangible improvement in my sparring ability. The main thing that put me off continuing training was actually one of the “assistant” instructors. There was a medium rank practitioner (purple belt, I think) who was Asian with glasses. He would walk around the beginners’ class with a massive chip on his shoulder. The only time we spoke, he berated me for getting caught in a triangle submission a second time. I’m pretty sure pro MMA fighters lose to triangle chokes sometimes, so to act like it should be trivial for complete beginners to avoid this every time is delusional. I was taken back by his hostility, but tried to take a constructive approach rather than lower myself to his level. When I asked him for advice on how to escape triangle chokes (which I hadn’t been taught yet), he just walked off. This showed me that he wasn’t actually interested in helping people improve, and only sought to cause ill feelings. My sparring partner assured me that it wasn’t a personal attack and that the “assistant” instructor was an angry jerk to other students too. I would have expected him to feel empowered by his BJJ skills and use this to help build others up, but instead he still takes his personal problems out on other people to try and make himself feel better. Maybe he should attend the Gracie Bullyproof program to learn how to be a decent person. I hope the real instructors will monitor the way he interacts with students, since just because he knows jiu jitsu doesn’t mean he knows how to teach. This experience is just not what you expect when you pay a lot of money to try and enjoy yourself in your free time. The sparring experience was mostly good. A few people seemed desperate to land submissions on beginners without consideration for their partner’s wellbeing, probably to impress the teachers and get a belt promotion. This meant that they were rushed and forceful with their execution to the extent that it was possible to get injured despite tapping out early. Other students were kind and gave me extra tips during sparring. If your goal is to compete in sports BJJ, and you can afford the high prices, then I do recommend trying this school to see if it’s a good fit. If you’re hoping to become competent in self-defence using BJJ, then you may find that you’re paying hundreds of pounds and not really getting what you need from the lessons. I would recommend going to a school that teaches Gracie Combatives if at all possible.

Fantastic experience: Amazing place to train. Pablo is one of the oldest coaches there , he is super technical and knowledgeable. He treats everyone with respect and keeps everyone safe during training. He often explains and teaches techniques long after scheduled training which is amazing.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been to many martial arts schools, but this one is exactly what you’d expect from the best in the world. Highest quality of professors every day, always making sure you don’t hurt yourself or others, and is so inclusive it feels like family. Pablo, Oscar, Farris, Nima, Alex are all beyond excellent instructors. Also most of the students contribute to a friendly, respectful environment. If you want to get addicted to BJJ look nowhere else.

Fantastic experience: I signed up online and called in the morning to book a free trial class. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They gave me a free rental Gi for the day which was unexpected but a pleasant surprise. Dry kayo provide a free locker for the day. The class was great, the instructors (Professors Bruno & Oscar) were very welcoming and the training partners were great. The locker rooms and showers are well equipped. The mats were spacious enough for all the class attendees. I had the honor of meeting Master Mauricio Gomes very briefly. While I didn't meet Professor Roger Gracie I did see him on the mats training with others. Overall, it was a great experience. I signed up for a month as a visitor and will be attending classes several times a week while I'm in London.

Negative experience: I came here for an introductory class and mostly enjoyed the class going through the very basics as it was my first time in a BJJ class. The instructors were initially nice and accommodating given my lack of experience and knowledge. Things started to fall apart midway through the class. There was another girl who was relatively pretty who was also doing this introductory class. After doing the very basics quickly to the side, we joined the main class. I realised midway she was receiving attention from multiple instructors asking her to join the class and sharing tips with her, while I was mostly left alone with my chosen partner. At the end of the class, she was discussing the details of the class with an instructor who was persuading her to consider joining, while I waited for an instructor to also discuss the details with me. I made eye contact with the same instructor to make him realise I am waiting for him, however, after the girl left, he went to the advance side of the class to teach there completely ignoring me. It ended with me walking out without speaking with anyone about the programme and my options for joining. I decided against joining this academy because I do not want to spend my free time with instructors who think it is okay to behave like this especially with new students.

Fantastic experience: Quite simply one of the best decisions I have ever made is to take up BJJ. I'm a former Boxing & Kickboxing Champion and started at RGA with my 6 year old Son in order to encourage him into a safe combat sport, for discipline and self defense and I ended up loving the sport myself. Roger's Academy is staffed by some of the best Jiu-jitsu's you will find worldwide, but for me it is also the atmosphere, the camaraderie and the great attitude shown by all the staff and members which is amazing and a real winner. On top of that you have a facility run by the greatest Jiu-jitsu of all time in Roger Gracie as well as his father Mauricio. No matter what age or gender, whether for your children or for yourself, Rolling Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at the Roger Gracie Academy is going to have a massive positive influence on your life, and I can highly recommend it. Fantastic experience: I’ve been training at RGA since 2016, originally in Freston Road and now at the new academy in Hammersmith. It’s a great place, very welcoming to newcomers and equally appreciative of its long-standing members. The instructors are brilliant, as you would expect from Roger Gracie black belts. There is a real community feel to the place, with summer and winter grading events in addition to other social meet ups. If you’re in London and you want to learn Jiu Jitsu, there’s literally nowhere better.

Fantastic experience: The RGA vibe is so positive I feel a spring in my step each time I walk through the door. Staff and members are incredibly welcoming and the facilities are excellent and spotless. While there are many world class athletes among the teaching staff and membership base, as a middle-aged 'desk jockey' I always feel I'm supported to excel on the mats, whilst having a great time. I just wish I could go more often, but visits are usually the highlight of my week. I heartily recommend RGA for anyone (prospective member or day visitor) of any age and ability who wishes to improve mind, body and spirit.

Fantastic experience: I visited Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy during my trip to London. It’s one of the greatest experiences for my trip. I met great people there. I was new to the area, but it was not too hard to find the location. It took about 30 minutes train ride from Barbican to Hammersmith station for about 2.6 pounds. When I got out of the station, I made a right turn. Then I saw a coffee shop in a triangular corner with the masters’ pictures by the window. The lady inside smiled at me, so I knew that I was nearby. I keep following the Hammersmith Grove and saw the logos, the gym is right there by a bus stop. The staff were very friendly. The professor was very welcoming and professional. The facility was very clean and well-designed. Training partners were very kind. I even met a lady from the US who was also visiting. Rental gi was 10 pound. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to learn and train at Roger Gracie. I definitely will recommend to all my family and friends.

Fantastic experience: I'm currently training at the Academy and it's been a truly positive experience. The Instructors/Professors are world class, and the students are open, friendly and very supportive of one another. There's such a strong community here and everyone is welcome, regardless of your background, level, shape or size. I'd highly recommend doing a trial class to get a basic idea of how the classes work and the people you'll be training with. Jiu Jitsu has quickly become a significant and positive influence on my life and it's all thanks to the Academy.

Fantastic experience: It was my Second ever BJJ lesson - tried out London fight factory in shoreditch previously and then came to this place... the difference was so insane. I knew i would love BJJ but i just needed the right environment to really get started and I literally had one lesson here and new i wanted to sign up there and then. I cannot recommend this club more highly, Its Professional, respectful, friendly, welcoming and just feels right. You will know what I mean if you try it for yourself. The only thing i would say is that they make you wear there branded GI - This was a bit frustrating as i had literally bought one from amazon that same day! It was an extra £80.00 but its a small price to pay to be part of such an awesome place. If your at the start of your BJJ journey then you have to at least come and get your free trial at this place. You won't regret it and you will most likely want to sign up if your serious about BJJ.

Two years on, we feel that she will be training here for many more years to come. Bruno and his team do a fantastic job of providing high levels of teaching, whilst maintaining a child friendly environment filled with encouragement, positive energy and praise. The teachers genuinely value, care for and have the children's best interest at heart, which - I have to say - is sooo refreshing to see and experience in London! Not only do they learn serious moves and techniques, but they also gain focus, confidence and have fun in the process! Big Thanks to Roger Gracie and the rest of the "family"; you really do provide an outstanding environment to learn and train in. We feel very fortunate to be a part of it.
