Kirkby Leisure Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Clean and tidy. Plenty of parking and decent facilities.
Thank you for the great feedback
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member here for a few months and it is excellent. I mostly use the swimming pool and it’s always clean and staff are always keeping it clean. The cafe is small but has everything you need for a quick snack. Very friendly staff.
morning, thank you for the great feedback
Fantastic experience: Play table tennis here at Kirkby leisure centre ever week. Always get a friendly welcome on arrival at reception, great gym and swimming pool, modern building catering for all sports. Would highly recommend to everyone. Give it a try.
thank you Rob for the feedback
Negative experience: Not one to do this but staff Really faffing about when trying to get my daughter into swimming lessons. Booked an appointment for a Friday with someone who turned out to be off that day as well as it being staff training day so ended up having to do a phone appointment on the Monday to then have to phone up myself and of course “short staff” which is why I haven’t had a phone call but message has been passed on to get it sorted….still waiting. If not been spoken to today I’ll just not bother anymore after being messed about too much. REPLY: My phone number was taken by a member of staff for her to phone me Monday morning. She even emailed herself the number so therefore it is on the system somewhere. I’m no longer interested after being let down too many times.
morning Becky, and apologise for the service received, after searching we haven't got your details on our system to contact you with the name Becky ludlow.
Negative experience: rude and unhelpful blonde receptionist
morning, and thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: I love it there I go to the gym every morning and the staff are lovely and very friendly
thank you so much for a great comment
Negative experience: This is primarily a review of EveryoneActive, rather than Kirkby Leisure Centre, as I am unable to enter the centre and judge it for myself. Even if you do not want a membership, any bookings must be made with an EveryoneActive account via their website. Unfortunately, if their website breaks and will not let you create an account, you are not allowed to use the facilities. Technical difficulties happen, but I do not expect such poor customer service: I have sent enquiries multiple times in the past over the course of 6 months, and nobody has even bothered replied to me via email. I wish I could just give up and go elsewhere, but unfortunately this is the only gym in kirkby, and other leisure centres in the vicinity are owned by the same company. (This is not just a me problem, I know others who are receiving the same error message when trying to create an account)
hello Charlie, if you pop into site they can create you a account at reception, thank you

Negative experience: Gone downhill with the amount of dirt at this place, the Sauna and steam room are deep cleaned once every 2 weeks I was last told, absolutely disgusting as it needs to be cleaned daily. You can see the build of grime and dirt from people skin, it’s all over the walls in the steam room and inbetween the wood in the sauna. Staff have clearly never been trained how to clean it in the first place as it’s not their fault, managers should have an eye for these problems. If anyone should take the lifts also you’d see the amount of dirt in there also. I really don’t blame the staff, the managers at this place are so below par it’s ridiculous.
Hello Harry, new cleaning schedule has been put in place and regular checks of the facilities.
Negative experience: Deteriorated since opening the new leisure centre. Gym lost their contract with TechnoGym 18 months ago and it hasn't been sorted. Missing pins, clips 24/7. More people in the gym than sqft, treadmills sat on top of weight stations, air con never works properly. Basic wear and tear never gets sorted and just gets worse. Only two disabled toilets upstairs to serve a whole gym that is essentially used as a set of glorified changing rooms. Machines aren't maintained at all, haven't seen a bottle of WD40 since 2021. Not enough plates to serve the plate loaded equipment, benches are all wobbly and half broken not to mention the cracked leather on every single one without fail. Basic maintenance such as water fountains going out of order takes weeks to fix when its a ten minute job. Nothing but a money grab, keep doing promotions to lure people in to fill a already packed gym that seems to be the least of the leisure centres priorities. Toilets never have toilet paper in them and are always a state. Vending machines never get restocked. All in all, if youre able to travel to another gym, do not bother with this one if you care even 5% about your training, complete waste of time.
Positive experience: Raquet sports, a sauna+steam room, pool, cafe, dedicated rooms for classes, etc, etc. Great value for money gym
Fantastic experience: Great app so no overcrowding! Kept clean
Positive experience: Great place but being charged for late cancellation when it snowed after paying full membership was not great Also parking is awful not big enough Gone home quite a few times as there were no parking spaces anywhere
Positive experience: Great centre- car park is a little small
Fantastic experience: Love this centre! So much for adults and children to do. Gym, swim and sauna are great. Good opening times, plenty of classes for both swimming and fitness. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: Very nice day at kirky leisure centre.. Fun swimming followed by hot food. Then on for sum disco roller skating... finally an hour in the soft play. Absolutely fantastic day. Staff are very welcoming, friendly and always happy to help.
Positive experience: Only a quick visit .I got the impression that it is popular with Kirkby people. Easy to find your way round
Positive experience: Went swimming today. There was an awfully loud and unbearable noise coming from some equipment in the pool area.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and lots of sessions to choose from
Negative experience: They scam more money out of you should you not attend a session even if you pay for a full year membership in one, so they expect you to pay twice. Being a member for a second year, this change was not brought to my attention when joining a second year. I would expect a charge as a payg customer but not a fully paid member. Also, the operations manager has poor customer service and knowledge about what other leisure companies offer. Also, the pool is tiny, and so is the gym, so if you like doing a lot of standing around waiting, then go here. To be honest, there are many better places.
Positive experience: Good facilities for kids swimming session. Everywhere spotless.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and very accommodating
Fantastic experience: Staff are great, always clean and tidy everywhere in the building. Very good gym and plenty of classes for all sorts of activities
Fantastic experience: Child does her football lessons here on a Saturday morning and the coffee is pretty decent too.
Positive experience: Clean fresh
Fantastic experience: Joined January 24. Have joined lots of varied exercise classes, all free within monthly subscription, also gym and swimming available. Trainers friendly and very helpful and premises kept very clean and tidy. Altogether a great place to exercise.
Fantastic experience: Clean and friendly…not totally full of huge muscle heads either! Well worth the fee
Fantastic experience: Amazing, the swimming pool was really good and the sports halls were really big and full with stuff to do
Negative experience: I Have swimming lessons for my son here. The parent and child lessons are always short from the paid for time. The child only classes are good tho. Communication from the Leisure centre is a joke. The pool was closed for chlorine reasons but no communication, found out from other parents in the carpark. Got a call about it 6 days later. Pool closed and no classes for two weeks over Christmas.ok no problem, but no communication again was changed ready to go in the pool with several other familys when told classes are not on. To quote the duty manager "we put a post on Facebook" The communication from management to the customers is seriously lacking. The general staff and facilities are good management needs improving.
Negative experience: Cameras in the changing rooms, I will never go again
Negative experience: Parking tickets issued to vehicles with valid pay and displayed. Kirby leisure centre reply is tough pay the fine. This is poor customer service for paid membership holders. Kirby leisure centre has the responsibility and the ability to cancel wrongly issued parking fines. The leisure centre and the car park are both owned by the same council. The centre is managing the car park, picking litter etc. And therefore have the correct details to cancel. Members will have to pay random parking fines. Another TAX Will not renew membership as
Fantastic experience: Kids inflatable pool party. Photo after. Kids loved it.
Fantastic experience: Top quality & safe area for children in the Ashfield area to learn to swim. This ex mining area of Kirkby in Ashfield has had a lot of ongoing inward investment from the government, which has lifted the quality of life, schooling, and employment in this area.
Positive experience: Friendly staff but there always seems to be a toilet out of order upstairs. And no water fountain in the gym. I miss that water fountain . Apparently there's another one downstairs but I can't find it ☹️
Fantastic experience: Very clean, nice and spacious gym with a decent amount of equipments accessible to all members.
Fantastic experience: Great centre
Fantastic experience: Clean, friendly & helpful staff, plenty of toilets, 2 hours of free parking, facilities that me, my wife and bothe my children use on a weekly basis. I was so sad to see the festival hall go, but this leisure centre has become so much more useful for us.
Fantastic experience: What an asset to Kirkby and the surrounding area
Positive experience: Parking poor, gym fairly small and their subscription model could be so much better
Positive experience: I'd say just your bang average gym, great for beginners & intermediate gym goers & plenty of cardio machines, but could do with a few extra machines especially for chest & I'd normally always expect a gym to have these machines in particular, bicep curl, tricep pushdowns & lat raisers
Fantastic experience: 1st time here. Nice and relaxed, no gym bunnies showing off or kissing their guns. Staff are spot on. Got signed up by Talia, all plain english and making allowances for an OAP luddite Update 8/10....... Started again following a NHS pain relief course. Saw Jen and everything was explained in the same way. Up to me now to make the most of the great facilities here.
Fantastic experience: 10/10
Positive experience: Nice, clean and well equipped. Unfortunately I think a lack of training or the general council attitude that let's the staff down a little
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place. Staff so friendly. Took my grandson for football training. The training is excellent well done keep it up
Fantastic experience: New & improved! We used the main hall for a dance event, but there seems to be lots of facilities for others; a pool, kids area & cafe for instance. Good free parking outside.
Negative experience: If you enjoy driving around and around car parks waiting for a space because they haven’t finished the construction of it and what they have built resembles something a 5 year old would design then check it out! Also if you get parked, when waiting for your child to finish their class camp out on the floors with the other parents as there’s just about enough seats to have a game of musical chairs with! It’s hard to believe this is a new facility.
Positive experience: Plesent feeling to this place, staff polite and friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: Kids splash pool is so cold (4 month old cried at it) and 9yr old only played for a few minutes but preferred the main pool as it's a little warmer. Others using splash pool had wetsuits on their kids! Tells you how cold it is. Absolutely not suitable for babies and toddlers splashing and playing. Not supposed to wear shoes in the changing room - makes sense, but there's nowhere to sit and take them off. Very difficult, but impossible with a baby in arms too. Only 3 family change rooms but no change table in 1. Couldn't get in the others. Private shower cubicles and warm showers is one positive point. They need to be after the temperature of the pool! Pool itself is OK. Baby sensory room nice but overpriced as not much in there to entertain a little one. Haven't tried gym, soft play, or climbing wall. Had planned to when planning to make swimming a weekly family activity but not sure we will. Feels like paying to be tortured! Looking back they've been getting the same reviews about the temperature since opening but clearly don't care about customers as they've not changed it. I understand operating and heating a pool must cost a fortune but if they had the temperature right more people would return. I doubt most users go back again. Also it would be nice to have a lane setup for family swim. My husband and I like to go as a family and each swim a few lengths while the other manages the children so we each get a bit of exercise too. Which we used to do at lammas pre covid. ETA: centre has parking. 2 hours free with a ticket. Shame it's not longer as the centre seems nice and clean. I would absolutely go with the intention of doing multiple activities but don't want to pay to park as well as for activities. website is absolutely awful! But app is so much better.
Negative experience: We booked a family swim for our 1 year old and 3 year old and the temperature of the water was far too cold for little ones. Both ended up with blue lips and teeth chatterting, so we ended up getting out after 25 minutes. Not the mention, when using the baby changing facilities, the sanitary bin was overflowing with dirty nappies and the smell was unbearable! It clearly hadn’t been emptied in days. Really disappointing experience which I certainly won’t be recommending.
Fantastic experience: Well-equipped gym and friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff there all really friendly, greet you at reception with a smile and a hello. Excellent gym. 10 out of 10 to the cleaner that place is immaculate. Highly recommend a visit to this one
Fantastic experience: I have say that Jade is brilliant on reception. She answered my phone call with courtesy, she assisted with professionalism and common sense, treating me as an individual to assist with my enquiry. And resolved my problem in one minute. Jade you meed to train others on reception as you wete brilliant! Well done Jade and thank you, you're a star
Negative experience: So I come swimming every morning and the same 3 bullying boomers in the pool though we were here to lose weight and feel better as a person not to be bullied by 3 boomers
Positive experience: Great little pool for kids but black bits floating in water so not sure how clean it is
Fantastic experience: So far we have only made use of the swimming pool. The staff are friendly and helpful. Everywhere is clean and tidy. Booking is easy to do via the app.
Fantastic experience: Very good facilities with knowledgeable friendly staff
Fantastic experience: A will kitted out gym, the fitness classes are also good value.
Negative experience: I took my 1yr old grandson to family swim and it was really cold . We moved to the child's play and that was cold too ... what's the point of having a family swim knowing the pool is cold I asked the life guard why is it cold and he just shrugged his shoulders
Positive experience: All the free weights are so cramped together with free weights theres no room around any of the machines and when you want a drink the taps that slow theres allways a queue and the cleanliness is shocking on a drinks machine but y is there only 1 in a gym of that size anyway numerous complaints and still nothing happens shocking service
Fantastic experience: Play area is lovely and clean and only £1 to take the one year old in, staff are always polite and nice :)
Negative experience: Cleanliness of changing rooms leaves a lot to be desired. I hope shower cubicles would get deep clean after box event, as has been used as urinals. Disgusting view. :(
Negative experience: DO NOT GO HERE. A lifeguard by the name Adam I believe, was very rude and irresponsible and was not paying attention to the pool whatsoever, and when I asked him where the toilet facilities was he simply shrugged. I do not think this is acceptable. I have been using this leisure centre for awhile and have never encountered issues with other members of staff until now. This is disgusting especially for the price. Would'nt reccomend.
Positive experience: Visited for first time yesterday since recently moving house to Kirkby.(my home town) Very impressed with the whole building and what is on offer, hoping to join the gym and swimming . like the children play area -can see my grandchild in there soon.
Fantastic experience: Great !!!!
Positive experience: Good place easy to access and facilities are good
Fantastic experience: Plenty of equipment to use , good atmosphere , friendly staff
Positive experience: Not the best gym. The lammas is much better but has whats needed.
Fantastic experience: Went to a kids party....1 hour of kids going crazy in the total wipe out....they went crazy and loved it. Stopped after to eat a McDs after and then played in the indoor play for an hour. 2.5 hrs of brilliant play. Both my boys went, 8 and 10... perfect for them. Book your party here...I know I will
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: Food prices are estortinate!!!
Fantastic experience: Top spot go and see
Fantastic experience: Great new leisure centre
Fantastic experience: Fantastic new swimming pool.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic centre, staff very helpful
Fantastic experience: Brand new though at moment not all facilities available
Fantastic experience: Beautiful new shiny and clean
Fantastic experience: Best thing that as happened in Kirby
Fantastic experience: Lovely leisure centre for all the family
Fantastic experience: Very clean, great staff and good prices
Fantastic experience: Lovely pool and changing room, really nice staff
Fantastic experience: The kids loved the small splash pool and the equipment in it. Aged 4 and 2
Fantastic experience: Excellent , gym, pool , all courts, classes Brilliant staff
Fantastic experience: Once they’ve complete the building work outside this place will be great
Positive experience: Still building works going on and didn't like the vibe. Left after a look and went back to Sutton leisure centre, with better parking.
Fantastic experience: fantastic place i love it is so clean and cool me and my family go every weeked for a swim
Negative experience: COLD WATER!! We bought two under 3's here and had to leave early. Their lips were blue and other kids were shivering in the pool also. Our children are poorly with chesty coughs and colds now due to this. Don't advise taking kids until they increase the temperature.
Positive experience: New development, worrying that children and swimmers can be watched from the car park/nearby houses as the windows are very large and clear..soft play good for little ones, but quite small and expensive for its size.
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed being here today. Obviously the development work outside the entrance will be better once completed, but on the whole a wonderful Leisure Centre.
Fantastic experience: Clean lots of activities on offer at reasonable prices. You can have a casual pay as you go membership so you only pay for what you use.
Fantastic experience: Went for physio and the gym. The building is brand new, in fact not finished yet. It will be brilliant when they have completed it.
Fantastic experience: Visited for the first time here with my daughter and grandson for swimming absolutely loved it very clean and staff was very friendly just a pity we only had an hour in the pool.
Negative experience: Would be a huge bonus if they actually answered the phones!!! Trying to find out if the sauna is open tried calling for over an hour...no answer...get there and the sauna is closed....again!!!!
Positive experience: I am dismayed and saddened that the annual membership has increased by £100, that's a 50% increase. I'm sure this will now be out of reach for many loyal members to pay.
Positive experience: Looks clean and new (of course) ... but also seem to be a bit of a money grab as prices already hiked and *drumroll* sauna is still NOT operational (a year after they opened, worth to add). Going for an after 5pm gym session is now *drumroll no.2* ... £7 a pop, so membership is an only reasonable option. All in all It's a nice new little gym. Nice new car park. Nice new swimming pool but... it is tad expensive for what it has to offer. (And sauna situation does seems like a publicity stunt more than anything ) Edit: don't want to sound cynical but ... I'm willing to bet money that car park pay machines will be operational much quicker than sauna
Fantastic experience: My Five star rating goes to Hannahillsley At everyone active Kirkby, For being proactive, knowledgable and going the extra mile with customer service. After speaking to a few of her colleagues, Hannah stood out and resolved my matter very quickly and efficiently. Even calling me several times to inform me of updates, which she did through pure kindness. Having a member of staff like Hannah makes life that little bit easier with the world we live in today where everything seems a battle. Your a credit to the gym and I hope they appreciate you. Thanks again . Collette Xx
Positive experience: Love how clean it is and that the pool is a good depth so my children have comfortably been able to swim. We enjoy coming here every week, however the last two times we have been, the water has been so cold! It takes a while to adjust to the temperature and we’ve had to cut the swims short due to my little ones being covered in goosebumps and shaking. The temperature definitely needs to be reassessed! We likely won’t return until this is improved as it’s just too cold, especially with the outside temperature being chilly this time of year. Also, the fam feature sessions should be more stricter and lessen the amount of individual adults swimming without children, who seem to huff and puff when you’re in the way of them swimming - despite it clearly being a children's/family session. One other negative is that the changing rooms are shared male/female and you see a lot of people using their phones when in the changing room, which is quite uncomfortable when you’re walking around in your swimming costumes, showering and dressing your children in the same area.
Fantastic experience: Played on the badminton courts, booked £5 for 1 hour. Was very clean and open. Very modern and spacious building with plenty of parking.
Positive experience: My only complaint is the depth of the water. 1.20 all through. I found it difficult to swim properly afraid my knees would hit the floor. 1.50 would be better or progressively deep water not same throughout. Loved the music and facilities.
Positive experience: The facility is modern and up to date, only being a year old in 2023. However, I do find the level of cleaning in the public areas, not to the level I would expect. It already looks a bit grubby in places and I don't think it has ever been dusted if looking at the air vents is anything to go by.
Fantastic experience: I was so sad when they demolished the Festival Hall. But to be honest, they have done a good job with this leisure centre. All I would say is the splash pool isn't the right temperature for the little ones. It's been a while since I did my pool plant training but I'm pretty sure that to prevent hypothermia in under 1's the temperature should be between 30-32. I would say it's 28. So really they should put up warnings for parents with little ones. The facilities are clean and they staff seem on the ball.
