Hetton Community Pool & Wellness Centre

Negative experience: Website claims medium and fast lanes available for lane swimmers but when I got there, there was only one fast one - which was full. The rest of the pool is a free for all with kids and people trying to lane swim, diagonally, bumping into each other. I asked staff and was told there’s only ever just one lane for the whole entirety of lane swimmers. Won’t be coming back. Why let people book something that is never available?

Negative experience: Do not take your baby or young child here!! After booking the only family swimming slot today we walked into ear deafening club music being blasted at 10.30am in the morning the entire time, my son clung to me covering his ears the entire time. There was no notice or way of knowing this when you booked the slot online. When we tried to leave a group of school kids came in for the lesson, they pushed past us and took every baby changing room and even adults shut the baby change doors on my infant 1 year olds face, members of staff and the school staff watched and awkwardly and did nothing. It took 20 minutes and a nice random elder lady to hold open a baby change door and shout for us. When we finally got inside the baby change room it was nothing lile the one we used on the way in, there was no water or handwash facility unlike the first and the room was also smaller. It was just a red plastic table with a small indent for a baby and a hole in the middle. When my child had a accident I was left in a small room with urine puddling on the floor bellow us and nothing to help me wash my child. I managed to wrap up all my things and move the the ONLY baby changing stall with running water then quickly leave. Having 1 decent baby change room and 6 other basic rooms is not okay. Staff members and school staff watching as children and adults selfishly take baby change rooms because of the bigger size and push and shut doors in our face is not okay. Never bring your infant here.

Positive experience: The gym is OK when it's quiet, but as it's quite a small gum, when it's busy, you find yourself waiting around for equipment to become available. As for swimming, it's rather pointless due to public swimming times being very limited. The biggest benefit to this gym is the friendly staff and how close the gym is to my home. But sadly, you'll pay over the top for what you actually get, a small gym area, and little to no swimming time. If you are employed, you'd be better off going to a different gym.

Fantastic experience: Hetton swimming pool. Friendly and helpful staff. The building is bright and cheerful, the changing facilities are clean with plenty of changing cubicles. The great thing about the pool water is it's not scarily cold to get into. I swim now on a regular basis and would definitely recommend this centre highly.

Fantastic experience: I visited Hetton Community Pool twice during my vacation in Houghton-Le-Spring. The staff are nice and warm both in person and over the phone. The pool is big warm and clean, the environment is convenient and spotless. Because I am not able to pay for the monthly membership using my foreign credit card, they didn't charge me, this is very kind. Thank you.

Positive experience: Pretty good gym. Very reliable. Staff are not friendly but I don’t go there to chat. It’s clean and the treadmills all work. I’ve never been convinced about the purple ‘disinfectant’ but that’s been replaced by antiseptic wipes which I’m sure will do a better job. Just remember that bacteria and virus become immune to methods of cleaning so alternating weekly or monthly (at the least) is required to have any effect. Removed one star as there is constantly unaccompanied children ‘working out’ on the machines.

From the moment I walked into the center, I was struck by how clean and well-maintained the facilities were. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and they were happy to answer any questions I had about the center's amenities. The pool itself is fantastic. It's a great size, and the water temperature is perfect for swimming. The pool area is also well-lit, which makes it easy to see where you're going and what you're doing. I especially appreciated the fact that there were plenty of lane markers, which made it easy to navigate around other swimmers. In addition to the pool, the center offers a variety of other wellness amenities, such as a fully-equipped gym, a sauna, and a steam room. I really enjoyed the gym, which had a great selection of equipment and was kept very clean. Fantastic experience: great great great staff absolutely fantastic friendly helpful always very welcoming. been today with our grandchildren had a fab time. problems with the coffee machine but but a member of staff came to help. he went over and above he even made us a lovely mug of coffee. only wished he was still on duty when we left to thank him.weldone to you all great little team.

Positive experience: Took the grandchildren here for swimming lessons. The youngest one was very nervous & she cried a lot at first, but the teacher was very patient & supportive, so she was soon enjoying it and fully participating!

Positive experience: Great pool etc not a big enough parking spaces though and the lovely curb rats are quick to give tickets out

Negative experience: The dry changing facilities are very dirty. I have visited three days in a row and they haven’t been cleaned. The same bit of paper is on the floor. The tiles are dirty and the bottom of the locker doors are grubby. This place needs a good clean and at least twice a day. It certainly hasn’t been done for the last three days. The centre’s not what it was.

Negative experience: Good size pool, but early morning swim is badly organised. People swim up and down and although most swimmers are considerate it is less safe than circling around. Facilities are disturbing in colours, it is dark and cleanlines is poor. The hand dryers are your hair dryers with a short 'pipe' and low capacity. Good mirrors and good lights for makeup though. Don't expect to feel fresh when leaving the pool, water is 'milky' and showers are very poor. No private shower cubicles, no doors. The pool had windows on side, but unfortunately these are boarded. No daylight scoming in, which makes the place even more gloomy. And poor taxpayer, who has to pay for the electricity by needing more lights on. What a waste! If you swim here, do not expect anything than swimming. The term wellness centre should be erased for this centre. It is the worst swimming pool I ever experienced. It was designed by people, who obviously have no expectations.

Fantastic experience: Nice to get out and get some exercise. Covid secure. The baby pool was shut on this occasion and for some reason you aren't allowed to use shower gel in the showers, probably to do with Covid. Nice friendly staff. Must pre book a swimming lane.

Negative experience: Cash is king in my line of business and u carnt use this community pool with out a card to book online or over the phone which is ridiculous since when can shops and the like turn away cash

Fantastic experience: Great access, and all on the level. Everything was beautifully clean and airy, nice and friendly atmosphere. I liked the step access to the (small) pool (not sure about access to the larger pool).

Negative experience: Turned up at 7am, not open, and again at 07:30, checked the website times and it says its open, but its definately not.

Negative experience: The pool and gym are great and so are the staff but we often drive from Durham go around in circles looking for a parking space, give up and drive home. Vast numbers of empty disabled parking spaces. People park on pavements and double yellow lines all over the place. Great pool and gym ruined by poorly designed parking spaces with too many disabled spaces (empty apart from cars without a blue badge in them!). Pity

Negative experience: If you are wanting to free swim don't go to this pool as it is impossible. It is also uncomfortable and intimidating trying to shower with groups of fully clothed male and female parents actually in the shower area. I complained about this but only received lip service. It seems all they are interested in are swimming lessons.

Fantastic experience: Staff are friendly and instructor Sarah who takes Zumba and Aqua Zumba classes here makes workouts fun. The gym is well equipped and modern and the prices reasonable. The centre and clean and well maintained. There could be a healthier selection of snacks in the vending machine-its mostly chocolate and crisps-but that's a small gripe.

Positive experience: Lovely pool plenty staff about but could do with some one moving the talkers away from the middle of the pool we go there to swim not to do an obstacle course round people who are just talking go to side and let others enjoy there swim

Negative experience: This is generous, I pay for a full time membership and can only attend the water airobics twice per week, Thursday evening class is amazing but Tuesday evening is dreadful, the instructor is late, rude, discriminatory towards members, uncaring and an absolute face ache. She sits most of the class and shouts instructions which can’t be heard over the music. I’ve complained to management twice but guess what? They say all the correct things but actually do nothing. I wish there was another pool so close and and handy, if you can travel I urge you to join Durham instead.

Positive experience: I have been a member of Hetton Community Centre for 3 years now and every summer the heat in the male dry changing room is unbelievable. If possible change the ventilation . Everything else is great Cheers John

Positive experience: This is a decent pool, but I find staff struggle to keep on top of cleanliness in the pool swimming area at peak times. And the changing cubicles are often locked despite being empty due to the double door system and idiots who use them. The car park is completely inadequate too. Pool has a small one for kids to learn / paddle and a basic 25metre pool with some lane swimming. Gym is clean and tidy and some decent classes on too.

Positive experience: We are here every week for swimming lessons and the staff are great. The facilities are always clean and well presented too. They have two pools one smaller pool for the little ones and a larger swimming pool no slides or diving board so not really a leisure pool. The only real issue is parking during busy periods it can ve a nightmare to be honest so if you dont need to bring the car i wouldnt and if you do and park outside a designated parking area there are parking wardens happy to issue a notice!

Positive experience: Pleasant staff, great gym and nice pool and facilities. Very hard to actually get a swim some days though. I went for an 'adult relaxing swim' on a Thursday, two lanes were taped off for kids swimming lessons and there were kids playing in the remaining section.

Positive experience: We went swimming with our boy. The pool was heated to a comfortable temperature and the depth was good for a 4 year old to walk in and gain more courage as it wasn't too deep. We paid £10 for 2 adults and a child and we had just over an hour in the pool. The changing rooms were very clean but some cubicles were too small for 1 adult nevermind a family. There's a few bigger sized ones but you got to get lucky with it. Overall a good experience
