Our comment from FitFit UK about Total Fitness Hull:

Total Fitness Hull, located in Cottingham, offers a wide range of facilities aimed at promoting fitness and well-being. While the gym boasts a spacious layout, a fantastic swimming pool, and friendly staff, there are several areas where improvement is needed.

Positive Aspects:

  • Good selection of fitness machines and weights.
  • Excellent swimming pool and hydrotherapy pool.
  • Friendly and attentive staff who create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Wide range of fitness classes available.
  • Clean and organized changing rooms.
  • Great value family memberships.

Areas for Improvement:

  • The gym equipment, particularly cardio machines, feels outdated and often has maintenance issues.
  • Air conditioning is reportedly non-functional, making workouts uncomfortable during warmer months.
  • Hygiene concerns have been raised, especially in the swimming pool and changing areas.
  • There can be overcrowding at peak times, particularly after school hours.

Overall, while Total Fitness Hull offers strong facilities and a welcoming environment, addressing the maintenance and cleanliness issues would enhance the experience for all members.

Fantastic experience: The review is only for Swimming academy! My daughter joined swimming classes with Lucy Chrost when she was three, and she now moved level up as she turned 4. We absolutely love every lesson with Lucy! She always finds energy to deal with kids with a smile, makes lessons fun, interactive, inclusive. I was amazed witnessing her, there was one day when she was In the middle of explaining the next exercise to the kids and one of the students was messing about and put arm bands on his feet. She stopped almost mid sentence and immediately turned over to the kid and explained why it is unsafe to do that. Because it was a safety thing. I was amazed! Very grateful and happy to be part for team splosh!

Negative experience: For the price it is horrendous value and for a slight discount you have to tie yourself in for a year. Every time I've been a member the WiFi is impossible to connect to during reasonable hours for a working person to go, when other gyms much cheaper in the area have constant coverage. Minimal amounts of the popular stations so workouts take a lot longer waiting. Members are held to no standard and will leave the gym floor in a mess regularly.

Positive experience: Love it here, only thing is the class times and opening hours

Hammid Arfan 6 months ago

Negative experience: I've been a member of this gym for a few months now, and unfortunately, I would not recommend it to friends or family. From Monday to Wednesday, the gym is extremely busy, making it nearly impossible to get time on the machines. There aren’t enough weight machines or cable options, and a lot of the equipment is old, run-down, or even broken. For the price they charge, you’d expect the equipment to be in much better condition—and for there to be more of it. They’ve recently introduced new cardio equipment, which is great, but they really need to invest in more weight machines as well. A large portion of the gym is occupied by children. While it’s great to see younger generations staying active, many come in groups of four or five, taking up entire areas. This makes it difficult to get a proper workout and can also be intimidating for women, as some can be loud and obnoxious. Even if you manage to find an available machine, you’ll often be asked, "How many sets do you have left?" before you even start. It’s frustrating and creates a rushed, overcrowded atmosphere. Some tend to stand and wait, which again, makes it very uncomfortable for a women to do her workout. I gave 2 stars mainly because Bridie was very welcoming during onboarding, and the swimming and sauna facilities are an advantage. In my opinion, this gym feels like it should be priced around £30-£35 per month, not the £50+ they charge. The value just isn’t there.

Negative experience: I've been coming her a few months now and I've got to say it looks a lot more polished then it actually is. All the equipment seems to be in good order until closer inspection, the full place is looking a little run down and could do with some attention. From grates missing, fixtures and fittings missing screws ect and vents been so thick with dust they provide no ventilation. The main selling point of this gym is the hydro therapy pool which other gyms don't have but it never seems to be at temperature (despite numerous mentions to management) and this week it's been out of action full stop. All users are friendly though and so are the girls at the cafe.

Negative experience: Been a member for years now slowly watching the club go down hill, no club rules followed or checked, my wife is disabled and comes with me but nobody polices the bays and we can never get one as young fit 20 somethings are always in them and before you say " all disability is not visable" there is never a badge in sight. The showers gave been the same for years , and it took me to open 5 lockers with no locks but kit in them to actually find a locker yesterday. Any chance you could also stop people using lockers as there personal lock boxes , how rank must these people be that they store there gym gear for re use , can't be hygienic at all

Fantastic experience: A good selection of gym equipment, two swimming pools and a hydrotherapy pool. Well worth the membership fee

Negative experience: I just wanted to express my utter disgust for how my mother’s membership was handled. She took out this membership knowing that she was terminally ill and made Total Fitness aware of such. She was assured that she could cancel at any time during her contract without any hassle or evidence needed- this was meant to be put onto her notes. But it has become apparent that this was a cruel sales pitched used. It was not made easy to cancel the contract, in fact, it has been very draining to deal with anyone involved. She was in hospital during the whole of September during which she phoned to cancel herself, this clearly wasn’t done. After noticing a payment being taken from her bank account, I then intervened via email. After sending multiple doctors notes stating my mum was at the end of her life I was told every copy was blurry and couldn’t be used. After death, I sent another medical note and said my mum has now passed could this please be cancelled. The response was now that they needed the death certificate. This would have been acceptable if she wasn’t assured numerous times that she could cancel no questions asked at any point and she had joined the gym on an exceptional circumstance contract. This has taken two months to cancel. Total Fitness, you are liars, scammers and thieves.

Negative experience: hordes of youth in the gym meaning you can't access the equipment cos it always 5-10 of them using one machine for hours. also they are pretty aggressive and 3 guys almost attacked and intimidates a man in his 50s in sauna. i believe he complained to staff but they didn't do anything. not suitable if you are over 23.

Positive experience: I was a member when the club first opened and rejoined 2 yrs ago after returning from 15 yrs living away. Unfortunately it feels like a lot of the equipment, particularly the pin resistance machines are still the originals! The gym recently had a refurbishment but unfortunately non of the pin resistance equipment was changed, just some multi stations and new flooring so still the same old stuff that keeps breaking, pins missing or bits falling off. A lot of the cardio was changed but the new stuff isn’t great quality and feels quite small plus there has been a reduction in the amount of bikes, particularly recumbent, now just one recumbent bike on the first floor and one on the ground floor which is unacceptable for a club of this size and membership! Also less cross trainers and now in the worst place in the gym, in direct sunshine! Same old problems with gangs of youths permanently on phones hogging equipment and lack of basic hygiene at pool areas such as not showering after leaving sauna and jumping straight in pool, staff used to be a lot more vigilant on that kind of thing plus early teen kids in steam room, not ideal when trying to relax! Changing rooms are a big issue, fed up of dodging people’s cameras and videos when I’m trying to get changed while they take pictures in the mirrors…pretty sure that should be looked at particularly when small children around in the changing rooms, no cameras allowed at the pool so why are they allowed in the changing rooms? Also not being able to get to hairdryers and mirrors for bags, shoes and dirty/wet clothes on the counter tops…Some signs or vigilance please!! Also would it be so hard to take a towel to the pool rather than come back into changing rooms dripping wet to get one out of the locker! Club also needs to police the lockers better and remove locks as not enough lockers at peak times. The aircon is non existent and for a club with a glass roof it really needs sorting as it’s borderline dangerous on hot sunny days! Just putting a few big fans around doesn’t cut it I’m afraid and really does put you off when you walk in to a wall of heat! Good sized club with plenty of facilities but for a premium price gym, I would expect better, unfortunately the lack of viable alternatives I feel keeps people here!

Negative experience: Avoid. Not recommended. Men's toilets are absolutely discussing and in the men's shower there is black mold pretty much everywhere. My experience when trying to cancel my membership has been long and drawn out. My payments should have stopped in May but this didn't happen. I contacted them and was told it'd be sorted. It wasn't. They took payment again in June. After more emails and calls I was told a refund of two months had been actioned and my membership cancelled. In July they took payment again. No refund. After another call I got July refunded but am still waiting for May and June. Again I've been told it'll be sorted so let's see. I feel there is no respect for their customers.

Negative experience: Big groups of kids congregate around one machine don’t even think about going after 5pm you won’t get on anything When machines are out of order (only one of each) they stay out of order for weeks The only chest machine has been out of order for over 3 weeks and now the seated row (only one) is out of order When you pay a high price you’d expect more than one of each machine and when they break repair or replace straight away

Negative experience: The gym is good, but it’s a dirty youth club. The changing rooms are grim, I’ve been here 6 weeks and seen 2 toe nails. The gym is full of youngsters on their phones, you’re constantly waiting to go on things - especially the leg press. Just sick of young girls stood around equipment on their phones, not to call out girls, but it is girls. Wanna pop for a quick workout? This place isn’t for you.

Tom Perkins 1 year ago

Negative experience: Worst gym I’ve ever trained at! Equipment is shabby, machines (especially the cable fly) are usually out of order or have defects. No air con, ridiculously busy all the time. Staff are nice but you don’t go to the gym to talk to the staff so it’s pretty irrelevant really when all I want to do is go have my workout and continue with my day. Would not recommend to anyone who just wants to train. It’s more of a social club for the wealthy retired. Waste of £50, the end of my contract can’t come quick enough!

Joshua Townson 1 year ago

Negative experience: Pool facilities are good but gym seems to have no air con. Plus lack benches for free weights, struggle for space even at 3/3.30pm. So unless convenient, its not worth the £50 a month

Positive experience: Very nice pool facilities. Came with my kids (5&7) and they loved having a go on some of the suitable equipment. Shame the learner pool is so deep. They couldn't touch the bottom so swimming was not a relaxing experience. Great place for families with teenagers but any kids younger than 10 are limited in what they can do, unless they are really confident swimmers!

Negative experience: Over the years I have paid over £1000 in membership fees and have used the odd guest pass here and there. They no longer offer guest passes and charge £15 for a day! Was trying to convince my friend to join but I will now be leaving instead. Really disappointed in total fitness.

Positive experience: I will change my rating to 5 star if they do the following 1. Improve swimming pool cleanliness. The water is smelly unlike their Wakefield branch where water quality is better. Beside other measures, this can be easily done by putting big sign boards asking people to take shower before entering pool. Majority of people in my experience don't take shower before pool. 2. Install swim suit dryer. They have it in Wakefield branch. If your swim suit is properly dry, it is less smelly for next use. If it remain wet for many days, before next use, it can collectively make the whole pool smelly ..again it's something that can be easily done. At times it can be overcrowded, but overall I like the place and will give 5 star if they do the above

Graham Harrison 1 year ago

Negative experience: Needs air con, ridiculous temperature in the gym during summer, bordering on dangerous imo. Equipment getting old and shoddy, pins regularly missing. Repairs take forever so equipment out of action way too long. Mens changing rooms often grubby and smelly...also they need some vents or extractors as very humid. Unfortunately I'll probably be looking elsewhere shortly, as it's Impossible to train hard given no aircon. Can put up with the other issues, but lack of aircon is a deal breaker

Jonathan Mason 1 year ago

Positive experience: Good selection of counterweighted resistance machines (hack squat machine also!), several power-racks and a decent functional area with sleds and several attachments. Free weights are a little limited, and the cable machines have clearly seen better days. No dedicated deadlifting platform, although this isn't a problem unless the gym is very busy. Overall a very serviceable gym, however it's costly monthly fee is only justified by it's swimming pool, sauna and steam room; if you don't intend to make use of those, or of the classes and PTs (I am told both classes and the PTs are excellent) then it may not be worth it.

Karen Lumb 1 year ago

Positive experience: OK. Staff friendly and helpful. If training downstairs, 2 or 3 treadmills often not working, which is annoying . Signage asking clients to wipe down and sanitize equipment after using would be helpful as a lot of them don't. Ugh!

Andy Dent 1 year ago

Negative experience: Rude blonde girl on the desk in the hull/willerby total fitness. Come with my mates to try the gym for a day pass, instead she denies it and now you need to apply on the website 24 hours in advance. (Assuming she’s the manager as she was walking around acting in charge) She just laughed and smirked at me like it’s hilarious, maybe just her personality but if that’s how you act on the front desk in-front of all customers I’m shocked you’re even there. Not been funny but if your pals are showing you a gym and you drive all the way there with them I feel as though someone who’s never tried the gym should be allowed to experience if? The only option I was given was to pay £15 when I’d have been there for about 30 mins- an hour. You’re seriously going to ask someone who’s never tried your gum to pay £15 to try it out ? Lol never again will I be back. Jokers, won’t be using total fitness anywhere in any area after this and I’ll be letting anyone else know about my experience. Apparently I’d you now want a free pass you have to apply 24 hours in advance and be contacted it’s almost like they don’t want any new memberships at the place

Dave Carr 1 year ago

Positive experience: Better than the Lincoln branch. Seems larger and more spacious than the Lincoln branch. The pool configuration is better here. Three lanes, slow medium and fast all in circular directions give more capacity. Showers are warmer and more powerful than Lincoln. It's a pity I will only be using this branch when visiting parents.

Negative experience: I used to go to this Gym around 5 years ago and left due to a Pure gym coming to the area at less than half the price along with other issues I had with Total Fitness. I recently went for a taster day to see if it had changed. Unfortunately straight away I saw the same reasons I left in the first place. The male changing rooms at 10am were dirty, fluff and piles of dust in the corners, these don't look to have been cleaned in some time or not correctly. The urinals were a disgrace that you could smell before you entered. I got stuck for a short amount of time in a shower cubicle as the handle was broken so I couldn't slide the lock due to limescale and wet hands. The gym itself is OK at best, Pure gym has better free weights areas which for a budget gym shouldn't be the case. The benches however were appalling, really old, and no padding left in them. I don't use the treadmills or bikes etc so I can't comment on those. On to the pool... It's crowning reason for going to this gym. I went into the bubble pool with my partner and while wafting the bubbles around we noticed that at the bottom were big piles of silt/sand/dirt who knows, but we were disgusted, seriously what the hell. All in all, this is a gym charging £49 (12 month contract) - £64 (monthly no contract) so this is a premium, expensive gym, befitting of quality equipment and basic hygiene and cleanliness which is non existent. clearly they are not reinvesting the fees back into the club. Very disappointing.

Joshua wakefield 1 year ago

Negative experience: Been a member here on and off since 2008, Gym has very little upkeep, Iv reported multiple issues with the state of the gym with Staff and nothing is ever addressed. Mold in the showers Flys in the showers All the benches wobble Missing pins for the weight stacks on the machines Rubber hanging off all the equipment handles or missing entirely AC is always broken and gym is like a sauna all summer Steam room heating unit is all discoloured/rotten/falling apart The gym needs a good overhaul nothing has really been replaced in the last 15 years apart from maybe some squat racks and 5 treadmills. The only reason i stay is because of the pool facilities and the saunas. If this gym didnt have those i wouldnt be a member. Such a shame as the gym has huge potential but the owners seems to care more about profits in the back pocket than upkeep.

Julia Inman 1 year ago

Positive experience: In the beginning I liked it, but now I'm paying £49pm and not even getting a plan to get me onto my fitness course. Some machines can't be adjusted to fit my calves or thighs. Ppl are friendly, and swimming pools are great, but floors are extremely slippery when wet.

Oliver Dawson (Oly) 1 year ago

Negative experience: Perfect for old people looking to walk around a track for a few mins and leave. Honestly this gym needs a massive revamp! The cardio machines don’t work very often (screens are shot) so you can’t accurately track things and do a workout you’d like. The pool is disgusting so I advise you don’t get goggles. Lifeguards are more interesting to talking to each other rather than doing their jobs. Clips and pins for weight machines keep going missing so you have to fight for a pin. Honestly not worth paying the full price for this gym. It’s not a bad gym for someone who wants to just pop in and do arms for a few mins then sit in the sauna but for anyone wanting to train don’t use this gym. Ultra Flex in Hull is miles better and cheaper.

Monty 1 year ago

Positive experience: The gym is far to hot, has no air-conditioning which makes it a location i cannot train. On Saturday the temperature in the gym was well over 30 degrees and most people just walked back out. we pay for a professional high standard and this is something this gym is not providing, these high temperatures are not conducive to an effective workout. The poolside was very slippery to walk on and i saw several people fall during my visit. the tiles near the steam room are cracked and have sharp edges which sliced into my shorts causing damage, when reported nothing was said or done. I visited the pool on the Sunday and the floor was still like a skating ring and the tiles had not been covered. Its a pity as this gym could be so much more, the only thing they are good at is putting the gym membership up

Chris 1 year ago

Negative experience: Came for a trail day as thought about moving gyms. Old fashioned equipment. Rust on cable machines with the weight numbers missing, benches are old and loose, no air conditioning. For the price I thought would be a top gym but far from.

Fantastic experience: I haven't joined yet, but applied for a free pass and the customer service was great. Despite me cancelling and re-scheduling a couple of times, Hollie was really good and patient, she took the time to show me around and answered all my questions. The gym looks great and even though I didn't try the swimming pool, it looks really nice and spacious. The changing room is big and clean. People seem friendly and everyone smiles at you.

Jen Bateman 1 year ago

Negative experience: It's just too hot to work out! The air conditioning isn't working and it puts me off going in as it's like an oven. I've heard they think it's too expensive to fix so I think they are hanging on for the weather to turn. It's really restricting how much working out I can do. It goes against the point. I'm thinking about switching gyms. The hydrotherapy pool is what keeps me there. But that isn't going to help me get fit.

Positive experience: I Love the Gym and pools but hate that people go into the sauna and steam room and then jump in the pool to cool down I’ve been going for a year and it happens all the time. There’s a cold and hot shower next to the pool to rinse off maybe a notice would help it’s just a bit unhygienic.

Dave Suddaby 2 years ago

Positive experience: I’ve been a member here for over 4 years and it’s the possibly best gym I’ve ever been a member of. I’m 59 and I’ve used many gyms. The layout and size of the place makes for a relaxing atmosphere and one where you can train with others or there’s plenty of room and equipment to do your own thing. Most gyms become awkward when busy but because of its size and the variety of gear, I’ve never once not been able to have a good workout even at peak times. Yes some of the kit maybe a little tired but it all works and any problems are usually sorted by the staff reasonably quickly. There is plenty to get stuck into ! Pool side is superb but often very busy indeed with only Wednesday and weekends free from very busy childrens swimming lessons. Even so if you apply a little patience and pick your times the pools are fantastic, the hydro pool amazing and the saunas a real treat. I can’t say it’s absolutely perfect, everywhere could be better in some ways but this gym is just about my favourite place to be. I hate the BurgerKing and Costa in the car park but I love this gym !

Brian Taylor 2 years ago

Negative experience: Went for a 3 day trial large gym best hydro therapy pool in the area but the place is not clean also large amount of people do not clean the equipment down and staff dont seem to bother . Maybe its because the cleaning stations are far away from the equipment and no notices on the equipment. The place needs a proper cleaning regime. So did not join due to this

Very good facilities that would suit most people including, swimming, running track, gym, sauna, steam room, sonarium, squash courts x2 hydro pool, hot and cold showers. Changing rooms are very clean and tidy. Please note that you do require some form of padlock for the lockers. There is also on site parking available. Finally there is also a seating area where you can order light snacks and energy boosting smoothies.

Fantastic experience: Fully equipped gym some times real busy, friendly but busy staff and thy should look forward to help amateurs and new members (this is my own opinion) One of the either steam room, sauna or snarium is usually out of order. Plung pool never worked after covid may b a kind of restriction, never knows. Over all good place to get in shape good range of classes and nice n always clean place.

Fantastic experience: This place has a lot to offer! It has all the equipment you'd need. A swimming pool, squash courts, fitness studios. A physiotherapist. There's a hair stylist, a massage parlour and I believe they even have babysitting for those pesky aliens (jokes kids are wonderful ).

Fantastic experience: I wasn't actually at this place but at the Burger King restaurant just across the road I thought the prices were expensive for what we got. Should have gone down the road to the nearby carvery, probably would have saved some £££s. Disappointed!
